If you’ve not yet seen it, visit Central Branch to tour Undesign the Redline, an interactive exhibit about how housing policies from the 1930s still negatively influence communities today. The exhibit, which ends Dec 31, also features several panels about Jim Rouse's vision for Columbia and where we are today. Tour it on your own or with a guide, read related titles, and reflect on your learnings (p. 5). In January, our Glenwood Branch hosts a unique experience as local artist Virginia Sperry installs a one-day sculpture (opposite). Stop by throughout the day as Sperry installs, then dismantles, her art. She notes, “My installations are site specific…I like to settle my creations into the space. The viewer then becomes a part of the story and not just a passive observer.” Bestselling authors Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen discuss their newest book, An Anonymous Girl, at our Miller Branch (p. 4). This intense psychological thriller filled with intrigue is their second collaboration. The first, The Wife Between Us, spent nearly three months on The New York Times bestsellers list.

Think fake news is a new phenomenon? Think again. Disagreements and concerns over one’s portrayal in the media have occurred throughout history, dating as far back as the birth of the free press. At our Miller Branch, learn what happened in Baltimore at When the Press Really Was Under Attack: Alexander Hanson and the 1812 “Mobtown” Massacre (p. 5). In February, we invite you to experience An Otherworldly Evening in the Stacks at our East Columbia Branch (see back cover). While we’re not at liberty to disclose any information at this point beyond the fact that tickets go on sale in January, this is an event not to be missed! We look forward to seeing you there! And finally, during this season of giving, we hope you will consider adorning Mitten Trees in our branches with donations of mittens, hats, and scarves in children’s sizes. All items are given to local charities after the holidays. We wish you a wonderful holiday season and look forward to seeing you soon. Happy New Year! Best Regards,

A TEMPORARY ART INSTALLATION Local artist Virginia Sperry installs her newest sculpture "Edge/Flow" at Glenwood Branch. The colorful sculpture, using masonry nails and yarn, explores the juxtaposition between disparate elements. Take advantage of the opportunity to watch the artist as she creates a site-specific installation and learn how she works. One day only event; the artist dismantles the sculpture at the end of the day. Learn more about the artist at virginiasperry.com.

How do you define creativity? Creativity is about problem solving, using all the tools that are available to create transformations, tapping into an inner world of images, words, music, and dance, and finding ways of showing that world to someone else. This could be an entire article‌or even a book! What types of materials do you work with and why do you choose them? I play with all kinds of materials, and a lot of my work is about this exploration. I love putting disparate elements together: steel and yarn, polymer clay and books, rust and photography. Why do you enjoy installing your work in libraries? The library in the town I grew up in was in a cool building that looked like a stone castle. I have lots of memories of going to pick out books with my mother. It always seemed a safe, quiet space where anything could happen, all you had to do was open a book. Many years later, I showed some of my artwork at that same library. It was the first time I connected the library with my art, but it was a great fit.

installation move within the context of the space provided? Does each piece move by itself, or does the installation move as a whole? What are some memorable responses or reactions that people have had to your work? The most memorable reaction was when the UPS man came to deliver something to my house after I had placed my bear sculpture next to the driveway. He almost drove into a tree because he thought it was a real bear. People have had the same reaction when they see my Great Blue Heron at Piney Run Park in Sykesville. Another reaction that is fun to watch is when I place one of my cast paper rocks into someone’s hand. They expect it to be heavy, just like a river rock. The look of delight and wonder when they realize that it weighs nothing is wonderful. That is why I make art.

INTERVIEW WITH VIRGINIA SPERRY

For me, libraries are about imagination, learning, and connecting with people in the community. Libraries are also three dimensional spaces with lots of nooks and crannies, and they are a great place to do my installations. What themes does your work explore? One of the themes that inspires my installations is movement. How can I show movement with inanimate objects? How does an

AUTHOR SALON: GREER HENDRICKS & SARAH PEKKANEN

f e at u r e e v e n t s

Could you tell a lie without feeling guilty? Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen’s new book, An Anonymous Girl, presents an intense psychological thriller filled with intrigue. When Jessica Farris enrolls in a psychology study conducted by the mysterious Dr. Shields, she thinks all she’ll have to do is answer a few questions, collect her money, and leave. The questions grow increasingly intense and invasive, and the sessions become outings where Jess is told what to wear and how to act. She begins to feel as though Dr. Shields may know what she’s thinking…and what she’s hiding. As Jess’s paranoia grows, it becomes clear that she can no longer trust what in her life is real, and what is one of Dr. Shields’ manipulative experiments.

Prior to becoming a bestselling novelist, Greer Hendricks spent more than two decades as an editor at Simon & Schuster. She obtained her master’s in Journalism from Columbia University. Sarah Pekkanen is the internationally and USA Today bestselling author of eight previous novels. A former investigative journalist and award-winning feature writer, she has published work in The Washington Post, USA Today, and many others. Books available for purchase and signing. “Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle.” — Thomas Jefferson Terms such as “fake news” and “alternative facts” may be relatively recent additions to the political lexicon, but attacks on the media are nothing new. Elected officials have been criticizing the journalists who cover them long before Thomas Jefferson, putative champion of the free press, wrote the highlighted quote in 1807. Historian and Representative Josh Cutler, 6th Plymouth District, Massachusetts House of Representatives, discusses the "Mobtown Massacre" in Baltimore in 1812, provoked by fiery Federalist newspaper editor and Howard County resident, Alexander Countee Hanson.

UNDESIGN THE REDLINE Undesign the Redline explores the history of structural racism and classism, how these designs compounded each other from redlining maps until today, and how we can come together to undesign these systems intentionally. Tour the exhibit on your own or with a guide. Public tours, led by trained staff and volunteers, take place Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Space is limited; register by calling the branch or visiting hclibrary.org. To schedule a guided group tour, email redline@ hclibrary.org or call the branch. THE ART OF STRING QUARTET PLAYING Dr. Richard Giarusso discusses the repertoire of Haydn, Mendelssohn, and Britten within the broader context of the string quartet from the 18th to the 20th century. Consider the social history of the genre, its role in defining the aesthetic priorities of the "classical" style in the late 18th century, and its legacy as a canvas for some of the most extraordinary work of composers across more than two centuries. OUT OF THIS WORLD! JEWELRY IN THE SPACE AGE Elyse Karlin discusses highlights from the exhibition she conceived and curated, “Out of this World! Jewelry in the Space Age,” which debuted at the Forbes Galleries in New York. The exhibition looked at the history of jewelry related to space observation and exploration beginning as early as the early 19th century with the return of Haley’s comet. Featured jewelry was crafted from materials used in and on spacecraft, and materials that come from space used to make jewelry (meteorites, tetktites, pallasites). Includes space-related memorabilia from the 1920s, and ways in which space influenced design in the 1950s and 60s. Karlin is the founder and editor-in-chief of Adornment, The Magazine of Jewelry and Related Arts, co-director of the Association for the Study of Jewelry & Related Arts, LLC and The Annual Conference on Jewelry & Related Arts. She is the past president of The American Society of Jewelry Historians. Sat

"My daughter is a real book worm! She loves the library and cannot wait to pick up all the items she has on hold at our favorite branch. In all honesty, my entire family loves the library! That’s why when a friend told me two tickets to the annual Evening in the Stacks gala were a benefit at a specific donor level, I joined Friends & Foundation — and joined the party! Last year’s gala was beyond fun—the DJ, delicious food and drinks, dancing with Michael Jackson, and being a little too loud in the library. In fact, I had such a great time that I decided to join the Friends & Foundation's board and am now helping with the 2019 Evening in the Stacks silent auction fundraiser! It’s easy for me to give back to something that brings such enjoyment to our lives, so I invite you to do the same and join me at this year’s gala. It is going to be an “otherworldly” experience. We hope to raise $100,000 so more families can enjoy all HCLS has to offer. And that’s what it means to be a “Friend.” - Heather Jackson, mother, active community member and newest member of Friends & Foundation Board
