Beginning mid-March, you will receive an invitation from the U.S Census Bureau to participate in the 2020 Census online. Our staff will be ready to help answer your questions and assist you in confidentially completing the census on our computers. The census counts everyone in the United States. Results are used to determine how many seats each state gets in the U.S. House of Representatives and how more than $675 billion in federal funds is distributed each year to support vital programs in states and communities across the country. That money is spent on schools, hospitals, libraries, roads, public works, and other vital programs — across the U.S., Maryland, and Howard County. The 2020 Census is easier than ever! Visit any of our branches for more information, to ask questions, and to complete the census. While you’re here, check out our classes for children and teens (from infants to high schoolers), as well as book discussion groups, workshops, and seminars for adults, including Eye Level, a new photography initiative and exhibit beginning in March (p. 3).

Stand up and be counted! Once every decade, our federal government conducts a census of the entire population to count everyone in the United States and record basic information about them. Our nation’s founders believed these data were so important that they mandated the decennial census in the Constitution. In 2020, for the first time ever, the U.S. Census Bureau will accept responses online and by phone, in addition to mail.

Throughout this quarter, mark your calendar for our lineup of fascinating fiction and nonfiction authors and speakers. Richard Bell shares the story of five free African American boys who were sold into slavery (p. 4), Ron Charles explains what makes a good book (p. 4), Tina Cassidy discusses the 19th Amendment and women’s suffrage (p. 6), Juliet Grames talk about her debut novel (p. 5), and Antero Pietila recounts Johns Hopkins’ role in shaping Baltimore (p.5).

WORKSHOP 1: INTRODUCTION Registration required. Must be 18+ to participate.

In the tradition of “Great Democratic Art,” HCLS wants to give nearly 100 disposable cameras to people throughout Howard County to gain authentic views into the lives and activities of Howard County residents and workforce. If you are interested in being part of this grassroots art project, participate in the workshops, which are followed by a group photo exhibition at Central Branch in May. Workshop I includes background on street photography, project guidelines, and composition tips, then participants receive cameras. No experience with photography necessary. Participants required to use disposable cameras provided by HCLS.

EYE LEVEL EXHIBIT Howard County Library System put cameras in the hands of nearly 100 people throughout the various neighborhoods in Howard County. This group photo exhibition showcases life in Howard County as seen from the perspectives of people from across the county. Participants used disposable cameras provided by HCLS, and submitted photos that offer authentic views into the lives and activities of Howard County residents and workforce. Antero Pietila spent 35 years as a reporter with The Baltimore Sun, most of it covering the city's neighborhoods, politics, and government. A native of Finland, he became a student of racial change during his first visit to the United States in 1964. Pietila published Not in My Neighborhood in 2010, an eye-opening journey into Baltimore's residential segregation practices.

Grames was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and grew up in a tight-knit Italian-American family. A book editor, she has spent the last decade at Soho Press, where she is associate publisher and curator of the Soho Crime imprint. The Seven or Eight Deaths of Stella Fortuna has been published in ten languages, including Italian.

In his newest book, The Ghosts of Johns Hopkins, Pietila weaves together a biography of the man with a portrait of how the institutions he founded shaped the racial legacy of an industrial city from its heyday to its decline and revitalization. Johns Hopkins destroyed his private papers so thoroughly that no credible biography exists. One of America’s richest men, a Quaker, and the largest single shareholder of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, Hopkins was also one of the city’s defining developers.
