It’s that time of year … no, not just the holidays … but the time when we are preparing for our twenty-third annual fundraising gala! In February, we invite you to support the Library while having a great time at A Swashbuckling Evening in the Stacks at our East Columbia Branch (see back cover). Evening in the Stacks supports thought-provoking events, such as this quarter’s lineup of notable authors (p. 3-4). In December, we welcome Nicole Chung to discuss her memoir, All You Can Ever Know, a profoundly moving chronicle of surprising connections and the repercussions of unearthing painful family secrets. NPR hails the book as a universal story, “about learning to grapple with our own identities, about learning where we belong, and about families.” On January 14, author Zack Smedley talks about his breakthrough young adult novel, Deposing Nathan. School Library Journal gives the verdict, “Recommended to fans of complicated relationships and suspense, and for students eager to read outside the mainstream.” He is followed on January 15 by Lawrence Lanahan, whose book, The Lines Between Us: Two Families and a Quest to Cross Baltimore's Racial Divide, chronicles how our area became segregated and why its fault lines persist today. Toward the end of January, Holocaust survivor Edith Mayer Cord visits and recounts her life as a young Jewish girl who was chased through Europe during World War II. Her book, Finding Edith: Hiding In Plain Sight, details the harrowing story of how she survived when so many others did not. During this season of giving, please consider adorning Mitten Trees in our branches with donations of mittens, hats, and scarves in children’s sizes. All items are given to local charities after the holidays. As 2019 winds down, I want to thank you for your support. Whether you cheered local students at a signature event such as the HCLS Spelling Bee, participated in summer reading, attended a class or author event, borrowed materials, or engaged with our specialists, we were glad to see you. We wish you a wonderful holiday season and look forward to seeing you soon. Happy New Year!

MEET THE AUTHOR: ZACK SMEDLEY
Author Zack Smedley talks about his breakthrough young adult novel Deposing Nathan, which earned a Kirkus Star and a glowing review in the New York Times. As a member of the LGBT community, Smedley gives a voice to marginalized young adults through gritty, morally complex narratives. Books available for purchase and signing.

Five Questions with Zack What was your favorite book as a kid? I talk about this book a lot, but in 8th grade, we had to read Flowers For Algernon. I immediately fell in love with it, and to this day, it remains my favorite book I’ve ever read. What book do you recommend to teenagers most often these days? There are a ton of great ones, but More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera is another one I never shut up about. It’s gritty and dark, but it tackles themes of memory, identity, and sexuality in a powerful way. What's the best way to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights? Everyone has a different answer, but I do it by trying to bring more LGBT representation into mainstream media spaces.
“An interesting tale in its own right, told in a surprising form - a stylistic experiment that becomes a charming look at the formation and deterioration of an unlikely friendship between two boys who are both lost in their own ways.” - The New York Times

Who are your heroes? My parents. I depend on them more now, every day, than I ever did as a teen. I may not live under their roof or require their financial support, but I’m in CONSTANT need of all the wisdom they gave me growing up. I’m a twentysomething trying to figure out my place in the world. My anchor—my hero—is that little voice I carry with me, everywhere, in the back of my head. I turn to that voice almost every day, and it sounds like my mom and dad. What do you do "just for fun"? I build things! The size and scope of the project usually corresponds to how desperate I am to avoid line edits. This past summer I built a deck!

“Chung’s memoir is more than a thoughtful consideration of race and heritage in America. It is the story of sisters finding each other, overcoming bureaucracy, abuse, separation, and time.” —The New Yorker

LAWRENCE LANAHAN THE LINES BETWEEN US: TWO FAMILIES AND A QUEST TO CROSS BALTIMORE'S RACIAL DIVIDE
Chung was born extremely premature, placed for adoption by her Korean immigrant parents, and raised by a white family. From early childhood, she heard the story of her adoption as a comforting story, believing that her biological parents had made the ultimate sacrifice in the hopes of giving her a better life. But as she grew up feeling out of place—facing prejudice her adoptive family couldn’t see, finding her identity as an Asian American and a writer, becoming ever more curious about where she came from—she wondered if the story she’d been told was the whole truth. With warmth, candor, and startling insight, Chung tells of her search for the people who gave her up, which coincided with the birth of her own child. Books available for purchase and signing.
“All You Can Ever Know is an incredible, humanist look at adoption, and an exploration of the scars Chung has from the subtler, unlabeled racism she experienced growing up in a homogenous plot of America . . .” — Romper MILLER BRANCH (410.313.1950) rg

Lanahan chronicles how the region became segregated and why its fault lines persist today. The Lines Between Us offers a riveting narrative that compels reflection on America’s entrenched inequality—and on where the rubber meets the road not in the abstract. Taking readers from church sermons to community meetings, to public hearings and protests, to the Supreme Court, and to the death of Freddie Gray, Lanahan deftly exposes the intricacy of Baltimore’s hypersegregation through the stories of ordinary people living it, shaping it, and fighting it, day in and day out. This eye-opening account of how a city creates its black and white places, its rich and poor spaces, reveals that these problems are not intractable; but they are designed to endure until each of us—despite living in separate worlds—understands we have something at stake. Books available for purchase and signing.

FINDING EDITH: SURVIVING THE HOLOCAUST IN PLAIN SIGHT Registration required.
Author Edith Mayer Cord discusses her book, Finding Edith: Surviving the Holocaust in Plain Sight, the story of her life as a young Jewish girl who was chased through Europe during World War II, growing up against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the rise of Nazism, World War II, and the religious persecution of Jews throughout Europe. Edith was hunted in Western Europe and Vichy France, where she was hidden in plain sight, constantly afraid of discovery and denunciation. After the war, the truth about the death camps and the mass murder on an industrial scale became fully known. Edith faced the trauma of Germany’s depravity, the murder of her father and older brother in Auschwitz, her mother’s irrational behavior, and the extreme poverty of the post-war years. Rightfully Hers, a new popup exhibition from the National Archives, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Rightfully Hers contains simple messages exploring the history of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, women’s voting rights before and after the 19th, and its impact today. Despite decades of marches, petitions, and public debate to enshrine a woman’s right to vote in the Constitution, the 19th Amendment–while an enormous milestone–did not grant voting rights for all. The challenges of its passage reverberate to today’s ongoing fight for gender equity.

big thanks
Our sincere thanks to the following individuals, organizations, and businesses for their generous financial and in-kind donations to Howard County Library System between June 1 - August 31. Every effort was made to ensure the accuracy of this list. Please call 410.313.7799 to report any errors or omissions.
jointhefriends.org The chance to create is one of the greatest gifts a community can offer anyone, but particularly a student. Whatever the impetus—a contest to design whimsical art for a bookmark, the model of an inspiring speaker, or just the thrill of diving into a book—Howard County Library System offers the spark that lights a creative fire in young people of all ages. My donation as a Friend makes sure HCLS has the fuel to keep that fire burning. And that’s what it means to be a Friend. Susan Thornton Hobby - writer and Friends member
