We look forward to showcasing our renovated East Columbia Branch when it re-opens in January. The “new” branch will feature twice as much space for quiet study and three meeting rooms. A TeenUp! center includes classrooms for Teen Time, HiTech, and Homework Club, as well as a Student Design Center (dedicated space, complete with supplies where students can create and collaborate on assignments and projects). Watch hclibrary.org for details. In February, take a trip down memory lane as we return to the East Columbia Branch for A Retro Evening in the Stacks. Join us for a celebration of the best of the 1950s through the 80s with music, food, cocktails, and more. Tickets go on sale in January. Lastly, you may notice that source has a slightly different look. Striving to make your experience finding classes and events as easy as possible, this issue streamlines the presentation of class schedules by branch. We hope you find it easier to discover all our numerous and varied classes and opportunities. And finally, during this season of giving, we hope you will consider adorning Mitten Trees in our branches with donations of mittens, hats, and scarves in children’s sizes. At last an expert classicist gets to grips with Bob Dylan. Richard Thomas takes us from Dylan’s high school Latin club to his haunting engagement with Ovid and Homer in recent albums. Thomas carefully argues that Dylan’s poetry deserve comparison with Virgil’s—and Thomas, senior professor of Latin at Harvard and author of some of the most influential modern studies of Virgil, should know!
