Letter from the President

The Very Best in Education, 21st century style Once again, summer seems to have flown by in the blink of an eye! We look to welcome cooler temperatures and the hectic swirl of back to school. As football season kicks off, some 3,000 Howard County youth are prepping for the final leg of the HCLS Youth Marathon, logging in their last of 25 miles at the Discover Downtown Columbia 5K and 1-mile Fun Run on October 2. The course takes runners (and walkers) through iconic Columbia landmarks, including the HCLS Central Branch. You, too, can register (see p. 8)! October also features prime author events. HCLS is pleased to present New York Times bestselling author and nationally recognized farm-to-table leader Forrest Prichard (Growing Tomorrow) on October 1, followed by award-winning journalist Ray Suarez (Latino-Americans: The 500-Year Legacy that Shaped a Nation) on October 13 in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage month; and local author Ned Tillman (Saving the Places We Love), presented in partnership with Howard Community College on October 20.

STEM education continues center stage in November. We are partnering with the Maryland STEM Festival to bring you a week of innovative classes — from “3, 2, Math Fun!” for toddlers to “Computer Guts” for teens. And—brand new— adults will be able to use our professional Sound Booth at the HCLS Savage Branch & STEM Education Center. Interested? Just sign up for the six-week certification course (see p. 23). So it’s time for “school” for everyone! We look forward to seeing you at these and many other HCLS classes and events.

Choose Civility this year centers on Kindness Creates Community. An October 6 event at

410.313.0760

9525 Durness Lane Laurel, MD 20723

CoHo Grill kicks off our Random Acts of Civility: A Year of Kindness in Howard County initiative. Participation packets—available at all branches— aim to inspire you to pay it forward through acts such as buying a cup of coffee for the person behind you in line, babysitting for free, or picking up trash on your morning walk. On November 5 we will host a Hackathon, where middle, high school, and college students will create online solutions to community challenges. And you won’t want to miss our very first Main Street Dinner!

MEET THE AUTHOR

Books available for purchase and signing.

Forrest Pritchard A seventh generation farmer and New York Times bestselling author, Forrest Pritchard holds degrees in English and Geology from the College of William & Mary. Upon returning from college in the mid90s, he took over his grandparents’ farm hoping to make the land profitable for the first time in decades. Twenty years later, his farm, Smith Meadows, is one of the oldest “grass finished” farms in the country, and sells at leading farmers’ markets in Washington, DC. Chronicling his farming adventures, Forrest’s book Gaining Ground, A Story of Farmers’ Markets, Local Food and Saving the Family Farm was named a top read by Publishers Weekly, The Washington Post and NPR’s The Splendid Table, and made the New York Times Bestseller list. Forrest’s new book, Growing Tomorrow, goes behind the scenes with 18 extraordinary sustainable farmers from across the country, in an inspiring farm-to-table journey told through stories, photos, and recipes. “I want HCLS to be all it can be for my children and all children. That’s why I joined Friends of Howard County Library System. Every year with the help of my membership dollars, 650 anxious preschoolers are better prepared for the first day of school thanks to these outstanding classes. With money from the Friends, school buses are made available at every class location to help students understand what to expect when they board for the first time in the fall. That’s the type of detail that transforms an acceptable learning experience into an enlightening educational experience. And that’s what it means to be a Friend.” Phil Dodge – father of two beautiful daughters, nonprofit management professional, musician, The Cure fan, and three-year Friends member.
