Once again, summer seems to have flown by! As the season changes, HCLS is also experiencing a period of transition. We bid farewell to Valerie J. Gross, and we anticipate welcoming our next President & CEO. Our new leader inherits an innovative, award-winning library system with talented staff and dedicated volunteers. As we continue to look forward, we are excited by upcoming classes and events. On October 18 at our Central Branch, author Riley Temple discusses playwright August Wilson’s ten-play chronicle The Pittsburgh Cycle, which dramatizes the modern African American experience in the aftermath of slavery (p. 3). An avid American arts advocate and supporter, Temple addresses the role of Aunt Ester, who is linked to all 10 plays through her children. On November 1, bestselling author Laurie Frankel speaks at an author salon as part of Howard County Book Connection with Howard Community College (p. 3). In addition to her three novels that have been optioned for film or television, Frankel’s writing has appeared in such publications as The New York Times, The Guardian, Publisher's Weekly, and People Magazine. In Goodbye for Now, Frankel examines love and grief, and what it means to spend so much of our lives — and afterwards — in an online world.

As to Choose Civility, we invite you to participate, in person and online, in our ongoing Random Acts of Civility campaign that focuses on building community. Our new facilitated, small group discussions, Conversations for Change: A Journey Toward Inclusiveness, consider the intersections of race, class, and culture (p. 5). On November 11, middle, high school, and college students participate in our second annual Choose Civility Coding Challenge and Hackathon to create online solutions to community challenges (p. 5). In November, we partner with the Maryland STEM Festival to bring you an impressive lineup of innovative classes — from Fizz, Bubble, Pop! Preschool Potions for toddlers to Explore Squishy Circuitsfor teens and Digital Design Lab for adults. We look forward to seeing you at these and many other HCLS classes and events.

AUTHOR SALON: LAURIE FRANKEL & GOODBYE FOR NOW Laurie Frankel discusses love and grief, writing and reading, and what it means to spend so much of our lives — and afterwards — in an online world. Frankel is the author of Goodbye for Now, the 2017-18 Howard County Book Connection selection. Sam, a software engineer, writes a matchmaking algorithm that introduces him to his soulmate, Meredith. When Meredith’s grandmother, Livvie, dies suddenly, Sam creates another algorithm that scans Livvie's online communication and creates a virtual version of her that gives Meredith a chance to say goodbye. The couple begins a controversial business that offers other bereaved people the opportunity to communicate electronically with their lost loved ones. However, they quickly learn that not everyone is able to say goodbye. The ethics of computer science meet the intricacies of a love story in this clever novel. The A+ Student Card is an assigned account number that allows students to log into HCLS via the HCPSS.me portal. Students can easily use HCLS eContent directly in the classroom.

Who receives an A+ Student Card? All HCPSS students, grades K - 12.

How do students receive their A+ Student Card? HCPSS media specialists will provide students with their new numbers during the first few weeks of school.

Do students still need an HCLS card? While students can maintain both an A+ Student Card and a regular HCLS card, it is not necessary. Students have full customer privileges at HCLS via their A+ Student Cards.

A+ SIGNATURE INITIATIVES BATTLE OF THE BOOKS An academic competition for fifth grade students, Battle of the Books comprises teams of five contestants who answer questions about 16 pre-assigned books.
