The Very Best in Education, 21st century style It’s Summer @ Your Library, and you’re invited to participate! Chock full of fun, this reading initiative for students of all ages also includes an engaging line-up of classes and activities. It all kicks off with a splash at Books in Bloom on June 11! This year’s theme, “Build a Better World,” captures the essence of Howard County Library System. Striving continuously to improve, we aim to deliver excellence in education while centering on civility and partnerships. As I prepare to move back to the West Coast in August, I am more grateful than ever for the opportunity to have lived in this dynamic community. It has been a distinct honor to have led your library system for 16 years. During this time, all our accomplishments were made possible by the extraordinary team of HCLS educators and support staff, and the immeasurable support of the HCLS Board of Trustees, Friends of HCLS, elected officials, and you, the entire community. We developed “Libraries = Education,” which is ushering in a new era for libraries everywhere. Here are some examples of what we’ve accomplished under the Three Pillars of our curriculum since 2001.

For Self-Directed Education, we bolstered our collection of materials in all formats—including a Human Library, and, beginning July 1, ukuleles! Under Research Assistance & Instruction, we expanded personalized research assistance, introduced systemwide Homework Centers, taught award-winning classes, seminars, and workshops for students of all ages (e.g., What’s in My Artbox for toddlers, Chemistry in the Library for tweens, and “Appy Hour” for adults), and strengthened

HCLS Project Literacy, our adult basic education initiative. Regarding Instructive & Enlightening Experiences, we held author events (e.g., Lemony Snicket, Jodi Picoult, Isabel Wilkerson), and implemented partnerships, such as A+ Partners in Education (with Kindergarten Here We Come!, HiTech, HCLS Spelling Bee, and Battle of the Books), the Enchanted Garden, and Choose Civility. We also built the HCLS Miller Branch & Historical Center, HCLS Savage Branch & STEM Education Center, HCLS Administrative Branch, HCLS Central Branch, and—just around the corner—the new HCLS Elkridge Branch & DIY Education Center. I’m proud that, working together, we repositioned HCLS as a renowned educational institution in the region, state, and nation. I’m proud that we received numerous prestigious awards— most notably, Library of the Year from Library Journal, which hailed the Libraries = Education vision “a 21st century model worthy of study and consideration by every other library in America, if not the world.” Most importantly, I’m proud that students of all ages in this diverse community have benefited from HCLS’ innovative curriculum, improving their quality of life. I am confident that the educational foundation we have established will continue strong. Once again, it has been a privilege to have been President & CEO of Howard County Library System. I am so glad that, together, we’ve had the opportunity to build a better world. For all of this, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

CONGRATULATIONS TO HCLS' SPELLING BEE CHAMP! Congratulations to Saketh Sundar, two-time winner of the HCLS Spelling Bee, sponsored by BB&T, Friends of HCLS, Howard County Public School System, the Josephine B. Scheffenacker Education Trust, and Henry and Nancy Yee. Sundar is a sixth grade student at Mayfield Woods Middle School. He advanced to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC at the end of May.

Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is the leading African writer of her generation. She grew up on the campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and left Nigeria for the U.S. at the age of 19. Adichie’s work is read around the world, and has been translated into more than 30 languages. Her first novel, Purple Hibiscus (2003), won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, and her second novel, Half of a Yellow Sun (2006), won the Orange Prize (now the Bailey’s Women’s Prize). Her 2013 novel Americanah has received numerous accolades, including the U.S. National Book Critics Circle Award. It was named one of The New York Times Top Ten Best Books of 2013. Adichie has been invited to speak around the world. Most notably her 2009 TED Talk, "The Danger of A Single Story," is now one of the top ten most-viewed TED Talks of all time, with more than five million views. Her 2012 TED talk, "We Should All Be Feminists," has started a worldwide conversation about feminism, and was published as a book in 2014. Her most recent book, Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions, was published in March 2017. Adichie leads an annual Writers Workshop in Nigeria to support aspiring young writers.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD AUTHOR SALON: JAN BOWMAN Jan Bowman discusses her short story collection, Flight Path & Other Stories, which studies and reveals the power of kindness. In difficult moments of human contact, explored from childhood through old age, this collection provides a window into the kindness all people seek in moments of sorrow. The dynamic mix of characters in Bowman’s stories know much about sorrow. Sorrow is found in the burden of a wife looking after her war-damaged husband and the son who confronts her more than 35 years after she abandons them. Sorrow is found in the struggle to hide from violence of the world, even though violence finds them. But Bowman’s characters know kindness as well. Kindness is in the unspoken understanding between a young man and his elderly aunt in the aftermath of a violent murder. Kindness is in small gestures between friends, and even strangers, after a sudden death. And kindness exists in unexpected connections found on the other end of the phone or through a shared meal. Bowman's stories have won awards and been finalists in a number of publication contests, including the Danahy Fiction Prize, Gival Press Awards, Glimmer Train, Roanoke Review, Broad River Review RASH Awards, and Phoebe and "So-To-Speak" Fiction Contests. Winner of the 2011 Roanoke Review Fiction Award, Bowman's stories have been nominated for Pushcart Prizes, Best American Short Stories, and a Pen/O’Henry award. Bowman’s fiction has appeared in numerous publications including, Roanoke Review, Big Muddy, The Broadkill Review, Third Wednesday, Minimus, Buffalo Spree (97), Folio, The Potomac Review, Musings, Potato Eyes, and others. I had two “aha” moments from this experience. One was that sharing information with her teacher about a challenge my daughter, Liv, was having was one of the best decisions I have ever made because it helped bring out the best in my daughter. The other was that children, like us, need to know what to expect from a new situation in order to feel comfortable enough to succeed.

What lessons did you learn from your daughter’s first experience with “school?”

What creates a sense of wonder for you in the realm of education? What I find incredible is that we are preparing our children for careers and ways of living that haven’t even been thought of yet. That is why our work here is so critical and why we start at an early age teaching children how to learn, what to ask — and to dream bigger than we ever could.

What is your professional background? I’ve been a long-time advocate for children. I started my career as a broadcast journalist covering child welfare. Then, I worked as a senior public policy analyst for a child advocacy organization in Washington, DC, and provided testimony for Congress while mobilizing a nationwide network of educators and parents to support early education initiatives. I also served on the leadership team that launched the high quality media education brand, PBS KIDS. More recently, I managed advertising promotions for The Washington Post. My daughter, Liv, is the inspiration for the School is New to Me series and company, Carla & Liv KIDS (.carlaandlivkids.com).

What topics will you explore in your discussion group? Since the discussion is geared to parents and caregivers, some of my topics will include:

The contest is open to all children in Kindergarten through grade 12 who live or attend school in Howard County. Entry forms available in the branches and at hclibrary.org. I fell in love with libraries when I was a child and I never outgrew that feeling. In fact, the only thing I love more than libraries are dogs! So you can imagine my delight when my favorite library system introduced HiTails Ambassadors. Through this new partnership Howard County Library System provides students with an opportunity to read to shelter animals awaiting adoption at Howard County Animal Control & Adoption Center. By reading out loud to appreciative, non-judgmental dogs (cats and rabbits too) the students' confidence and compassion grow. Even better,
