Beginning March 1, HCLS Homework Centers debut at all six branches. With the tagline To and Through College & Career, this A+ Partners in Education component aims to maximize academic success. The venues will offer kindergarten through college students a studious environment, assistance from HCLS Research Specialists & Instructors, group study room reservations, and a variety of school supplies. In addition, students will be invited to pose for their Picture of Success. Complete with graduation caps, these portraits will note anticipated high school and college graduation dates (see p. 8). March also kicks off our annual A+ academic competitions. You won't want to miss the HCLS Spelling Bee and its Bumblebee companion, Battle of the Books (1,500 fifth graders are participating this year!), and the HCLS Rube Goldberg Challenge that infuses fun into STEM education.

What's new for adults? As part of Choose Civility, you will be able to “borrow” a "book" at our Human Library event on March 11. Through conversations, you'll learn from someone whose story or views may differ from your own. We are also pleased to partner with HCC’s Mediation and Conflict Resolution Center on a series of Dialogue Circles to foster community dialogue. The Human Library™ is designed to build a positive framework for conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. It’s a place where real people are on loan to readers, and a place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated, and answered. As in a traditional library, visitors to the Human Library can choose Books from a range of titles. But at the Human Library, Books are people and the reading is a conversation! What does it mean to have a positive or healthy body image? A healthy body image is often thought to be akin to the thought, "I love my beautiful body!" And that's not the point. Healthy body image means that you see your body as your home, not your billboard. Its value is in what it can do for you. How it can sense the world around you. How it lets you show love and affection. That it can give life. That it can taste, smell, see, touch, and interact with the world. When you have pride in your body for what it can do, not just how it looks, you have healthy body image. Of course it's okay to love the way it looks, too!

What are some of the consequences of a negative or unhealthy body image? When negative body image is developed, anxiety and depression develop from the negative thoughts a person has. Sadly, people may work day and night to "fix" their body, but often find they're never truly happy. Why? Because what is lost in the process of "fixing" their body is their emotional health, their physical health, and spiritual health.

What are some steps we can take to promote healthy body image for ourselves and among our family and friends? The best way to promote healthy body image is to find out what you truly value about yourself and loved ones. While we receive messages thousands of times a day about how we can "improve" ourselves, we have very little telling us what is already special about us. Taking the time to talk about our gifts, our empathy, our love and connection, our work ethic, personal ethic, is something we rarely do.

Talking with Andrew Walen What is the difference between self-esteem and selfconfidence? To me, self-esteem is the combination of selfworth and self-efficacy. In other words, I can do it and I'm worth doing it for. The hard part in research is knowing where this comes from. And that's part of what we'll be talking about. Self-confidence is the result of self-esteem. Once I have proven I can do something, I maintain that belief and hopefully it spreads to other aspects of my life.

The Black-Eyed Susan Book Award is a children’s choice award for the state of Maryland. Each year since 1992, the Black-Eyed Susan Book Award has been given to authors and/or illustrators of outstanding books chosen for the award by Maryland students. The award seeks to promote literacy and lifelong reading habits by encouraging students to read quality, contemporary literature. CULTURE FEST: OCEANIA: AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND & THE PACIFIC ISLANDS

HiTech, HCLS’ STEM education initiative, teaches cutting-edge science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) via project-based classes that include computer programming (Python and Javascript), 3D animation, nanotechnology, music/video production, e-books, game apps, cybersecurity, green energy, and robotics.

While reading great literature is my favorite activity, the opportunity to meet and talk with contemporary authors is the most rewarding and memorable part of my literary experience. That's why I joined Friends of Howard County Library System — to help make Notable Author events possible. As a Friend, I enjoy exclusive, pre-event social receptions filled with thoughtful conversations that connect me to my community in a meaningful way. It takes more than public funding to bring these types of dynamic, enriching experiences to our community.
