SPRING 2018

If you enjoy growing greens, register for the salad table construction demonstration, which is one of the classes offered at the new Elkridge Branch + DIY Education Center. Join us for the grand opening on Saturday, March 10 to see the new building! More than doubling in space, the new branch features study and meeting rooms, a vending café and business center, as well as more computers and an expanded collection. In addition, the branch includes a DIY collection focused on tools you can borrow (e.g., hammers, unique baking pans, bike repair kits) to repair, create, and adventure. The following weekend, one of last year’s most interesting initiatives returns: The Human Library (p. 4). Check out Living Books and enjoy one-on-one conversations with people with backgrounds and experiences that may differ from yours. Visit ChooseCivility.org for a list of Books. Our newly re-opened and extensively renovated East Columbia Branch hosts two exciting author visits in April. On April 5, Rafael Alvarez discusses his collection of short stories, Basilio Boullosa Stars in the Fountain of Highlandtown. Everyone is invited to hear Hena Khan discuss her awardwinning novel, Amina’s Voice, on April 25. Amina recounts her story as a young Pakistani American girl trying to make it through middle school. In May, bestselling author Laurie Frankel joins us via Skype at Savage Branch (p. 34) for a discussion of This Is How It Always Is, the saga of a family with a transgender daughter. Pick up a book at any of our author events, then log them as part of our #100K Books Challenge. Help us reach our goal! For our entire spring curriculum, peruse these pages, explore hclibrary.org, and, most importantly, visit us in person. With warmest regards,

Louise B. Riemer Chair, Board of Trustees ACCOMMODATIONS: Appropriate accommodations made at Howard County Library System (HCLS) sponsored events for individuals with special needs, if requested at least one week in advance.

MEET THE AUTHOR: RAFAEL ALVAREZ Rafael Alvarez discusses his new collection of fiction, Basilio Boullosa Stars in the Fountain of Highlandtown. Alvarez explores the theme of exile, the heartbreak of leaving and being left behind set to the soundtrack of the Beatles, Dylan, and Zappa. From the East Baltimore immigrants stirring the old country back to life in deep-bellied pots and cast iron skillets to the lovers stoking the relics of lost romance, Alvarez's characters yearn for the lost and struggle mightily to make memory as tangible as flesh. A lifelong Baltimorean, Alvarez began publishing poetry during the Ford Administration by rewriting the lyrics to Robin Trower songs. His early pieces appeared in the News-American — a defunct afternoon paper for the city's working class — and Chicory, a literary magazine published in Baltimore from 1966 to 1983. For twenty years, he worked as a City Desk reporter for The Baltimore Sun, specializing in the folklore of city neighborhoods. He quit the paper in 2001 to work as a laborer on cable ships and soon after began writing for HBO's police drama, The Wire. Basilio Boullosa Stars in the Fountain of Highlandtown is his fourth volume of fiction. Books available for purchase and signing. EAST COLUMBIA BRANCH (410.313.7700)

"Rafael Alvarez's talents —poetic deftness, tight dialogue, burning descriptive passages laid out with seeming ease —show why he was one of the gifted writers that turned The Wire into the greatest show in television history. These are stories from the treasure chest of one of America's most talented scribes, and I am glad he shared them with us."

"...[Lawson] has come to see her garden as a place that is no longer territory to be defended against the squirrels, the moles and other invading critters, but a place to be extended to them. … The book is something of a guide to dealing with nuisance species—how to humanely remove squirrels from your attic, for example—but it is, at its heart, a plea to rethink our mentality about other species on our patch.” —Adrian Higgins, The Washington Post

He has registered for every NorthSouth family reunion since the first one in 2000 to the most recent one in October 2015, but he has never been selected. “It’s been almost 70 years. Yeah, it was not easy to accept not being chosen. I’ve almost given up. I wasn’t chosen this time.” When asked what he would say if he met his relatives again, he said, “Seeing their faces is more important. Why talk?”

In that spirit, Maryland Humanities created One Maryland One Book (OMOB) to bring together diverse people in communities across the state through the shared experience of reading the same book. In 2018, OMOB's theme is “Justice." This year's selection announced in March.

"As most parents believe, the education of my children is paramount. Their exposure to learning experiences outside of a typical classroom setting is a vital part of that education. That is what makes the Enchanted Garden at Howard County Library System Miller Branch so meaningful to me. This sustainable, community-based teaching garden provides a unique learning environment for children and nature lovers of all ages.

f r i e n d s & f o u n d at i o n

big thanks

Our sincere thanks to the following individuals, organizations, and businesses for their generous financial and in-kind donations to Howard County Library System between September 1 and November 30. Every effort was made to ensure the accuracy of this list. Please call 410.313.7799 to report any errors or omissions.

Howard County Library System is committed to forging pathways to discovery, and the Enchanted Garden is a tangible example of that pledge. Through classes, Explorer Packs filled with supplies for self-guided activities, and youth gardening clubs, HCLS provides a range of interactive experiences in the Enchanted Garden's outdoor eco-classroom. Children learn about the benefit of native plants, the importance of pollinators, and why monarch butterflies need our help. Community members lend their expertise and impart gardening knowledge that fosters intergenerational relationships. Every season offers a new opportunity for growth and learning that families can share together. With today's unavoidable engagement to technology and over-commitment in our lives, making time to appreciate nature and the important role it plays both globally and on a local level is a relevant necessity. My yearly donation to HCLS Friends & Foundation ensures that the Enchanted Garden, along with other HCLS enrichment programs, will remain supported and nurtured for the benefit of our community. And that's what it means to be a "Friend." - Sabina Sambat, mother, nurse practitioner at The Family Center, member of Friends & Foundation of HCLS Board
