examines the history and culture of Latino Americans, and on December 8, Maggie Leffler discusses her captivating cross-generational novel, The Secrets of Flight. Award-winning playwright Willy Conley presents his debut novel about a deaf biomedical photography student on January 14. You won’t want to miss these fascinating presentations. As we prepare for the season of giving, please consider performing a Random Act of Civility. This year’s Choose Civility theme, Kindness Creates Community, encourages us to pay it forward through acts such as helping a neighbor shovel snow, holding the door for someone, sending a care package to a service member, or donating hats and mittens for children in need (bring them to any HCLS branch during December to decorate our Mitten Trees). As 2016 draws to a close, we take stock of the year and express our gratitude to you. Whether you participated in one or more of our signature events (e.g., HCLS Spelling Bee, Battle of the Books), enrolled in Summer Reading, attended one of our many classes, conducted research via HCLS Now!, borrowed materials, or simply visited our branches to drink in the wonderful ambiance, thank you! The new year kicks off with our annual Evening in the Stacks gala on Saturday, February 25. This year’s theme, An International Affair, not only celebrates Howard County’s diverse cultural heritage, but also recalls previous popular themes (e.g., Passport to Asia, Along the Silk Road, Caliente!). We are particularly thrilled to feature Nadia Hashimi, author of internationally bestselling novels that chronicle her Afghan family’s experiences. We hope you can join us for a fabulously fun evening of conviviality, music, food and drink, silent auction, and literary entertainment. Proceeds benefit our awardwinning educational initiatives. MEET THE AUTHOR: WILLY CONLEY Award-winning playwright Willy Conley discusses his debut novel, The Deaf Heart. Told through a series of quirky, irreverent short stories and letters home during the early 1980s, The Deaf Heart chronicles a year in the life of Dempsey “Max” McCall, a Deaf biomedical photography resident at a teaching hospital on the island of Galveston, Texas. Max strives to become certified as a Registered Biological Photographer while straddling the deaf and hearing worlds. Conley’s stories — some humorous, some poignant — reveal Max’s struggles and triumphs as he attempts to succeed in the hearing world while at the same time navigating the multicultural and linguistic diversity within the Deaf world. Willy Conley is a professor of Theatre Arts in the Department of Art, Communication, and Theatre at Gallaudet University.

I thought it was important to give back to a community institution that gave my family so much. With money from the Friends, 4,500 books are made available each year so 1,500 students can participate in this countywide academic competition.
