The Very Best in Education, 21st century style As jonquils bloom and hints of green start to warm the landscape, perhaps the best harbinger of spring is the first ball being tossed out on Opening Day at Camden Yards. At HCLS, we will have our very own Opening Day preview, featuring none other than baseball’s one and only Iron Man – Cal Ripken, Jr. Cal will visit our Miller Branch on March 2 to talk about and sign copies of his latest children’s book, The Closer. You’ll not want to miss this exciting appearance by one of Baltimore’s true hometown heroes. Additionally, warmer weather means we “dig in” to move some exciting building projects forward. In April, HCLS Central Branch will close for three months to add classroom and quiet study space, as well as vibrant new carpet. At Elkridge, we’ll break ground for a greatly expanded state-of-the-art HCLS Elkridge Branch + DIY Education Center. March kicks off our annual A+ Partners in Education academic competitions with the BumbleBee Celebration (grades 1-3) and HCLS Spelling Bee (grades 4-8). Join us for Battle of the Books (grade 5) at one of six simultaneous sites in April to witness students taking a lively 50-question “exam” on 15 pre-assigned books. The HCLS Rube Goldberg Challenge in

May recognizes the ingenuity of students who incorporate science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) into crazy contraptions that erase a whiteboard. For tweens and teens, STEM classes focus on astronomy, chemistry, Earth Day, and presentation software. In the realm of arts and music, classes include Go Pro with Your Manga, Earth Day Recycled Crafts, and DaVinci STEAM. Regardless of topic, our classes teach creativity, design thinking, collaboration, and problem solving. Adults will enjoy our impressive line-up of authors, including Drew Magary, Nadia Hashimi, Madan Vasishta, Elaine Eff, and Denise DeRosa. For more details on any of the above—and our entire spring curriculum—we invite you to peruse the following pages and visit hclibrary.org. Most importantly in this digital age, our expert team of educators and support staff looks forward to connecting with you in person.

Cal Ripken, Jr. was a shortstop and third baseman for the Baltimore Orioles for his entire career (1981-2001). Nicknamed “The Iron Man” for his relentless work ethic and reliability on the field, Ripken is most remembered for playing a record 2,632 straight games over 17 seasons, shattering the record previously held by Lou Gehrig at 2,130. MEET THE AU T H O R S Painted Sc reens of Baltimore

Sponsored by Friends of HCLS.

Nadia Hashimi Nadia Hashimi’s first novel — an international bestseller and 2014 Goodreads finalist in the categories of Debut Author and Fiction — The Pearl That Broke Its Shell, depicts two generations of Afghan women. Her second novel, When The Moon Is Low, chronicles the perilous journey of an Afghan family who flees Taliban-controlled Kabul only to find themselves in the dark world of undocumented refugees living in Europe. Books available for purchase and signing. MILLER (410.313.1950)

In The Painted Screens of Baltimore, Elaine Eff looks at the beloved urban folk art form of painted screens. Window and door screens painted with scenic landscapes were a popular addition to Baltimore row homes throughout the 20th century, and many fine examples by both up-and-coming artists and the masters can still be found in the community today. Eff discusses the roots of the practice abroad, in Victorian America, and in Baltimore’s former ethnic communities where painted screens have been very much at home. She also explores the future of this unique art form. Books available for purchase and signing.

After a childhood illness left Madan Vasishta deaf, he was despondent: in India, the word for “deaf” in all three main languages denotes someone who is “less than human.” Vasishta’s story in Deaf in Delhi reflects the India of his youth, an emerging nation where most people struggled with numbing poverty. After working as a cattle herder, he moved to Delhi where he realized his dream of becoming a photographer. With an irrepressible personality Vashista persevered, and despite a lack of local educational resources for the deaf, he eventually earned admission to Gallaudet University in the US. Madan Vasishta is Associate Professor in the Department of Administration and Supervision at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. MILLER (410.313.1950)
