MULTIPLE LAYERS OF SUZHOU Isolation between generations and regions

With abundant research on history and users’ behavior as a foundation, concrete functions and primary layout was proposed. As study loop proceeds, it is found that young generations should be introduced to the community as well to promote a more dynamic living pattern. Thus, the design needs a more appealing gesture to become a focal point from their perspective. In addition to a health care center as infrastructure, more multi-functional space with barrier system is proposed to accommodate intergenerational activities.

ELDER SKYBRIDGE

Locating on an “island” of Suzhou within its grid of canals in Panmen Road, the site is an “urban village” which includes many aspects of the urban history of Suzhou uniquely superimposed on one another. There are numerous seniors living there who have experienced many of the changes that have occurred in this area. However, they have become somewhat isolated, without much communication with and connection.

NATIVENESS IN HOUSING Courtyard Idea & Integration with Modernity

The design responds to the 'relocational problem' happening at the outskirts of the city. It attempts to promote harmony community life between localness and relocated residents. Similar with traditional courtyard, the proposal contains a central public space while provides skygardens at different levels meanwhile to accomodate varied socializing. In general, the project responds to the urban context on the form and space organization. In addition, the concept breaks the isolated 'Alley culture' and brings more public for a modern community.

FLOATING COMMUNITY

When speaking of traditional housing in Suzhou, courtyard would always be the core feature. It functions as the main public space within the building and organizes the community life. Locating in front of the Suzhou canal, the site represents a traditional Suzhouness life pattern. The design inherits courtyard concept to accomodate local elements as well as collective life.

With four kinds of unit as the prototypes, the plan varies within the system. On a standard floor plan, blocks are connected with public garden while facilities like reading room and meeting area are proposed. Furthermore, due to the lifted volume, the ground floor contains continuous open space and becomes penetrable. The entire community is accessible to people's social life. The perception of grey space resembles the feeling that rockery in Suzhou garden create.

LOST IN TIGERHILL Interlace of Modern and Tradition

The design proposed a co-working space for architects in Tigerhill Area. As pioneers of urban regeneration as the representative of the native spirit, local independent architects are supposed to have a base. Furthermore, the scarcity of designing institute in Tiger Hill area will give this co-working space more opportunities. This-co working space emphasize teamwork and tries to build a bridge between clients and architects.

TIGERHILL REBORN

Adjacent to Suzhou’s historical heritage Tiger Hill, the site has a featured context of traditional architectural style. Located among intersecting creeks, the area has a complex river system and creates diverse waterfront scenery simultaneously. Nevertheless, as a suburban area, Tiger Hill area is now suffering from a messy environment due to constant modification The entire region lack coherence and needs an initial point to trigger the transformation.

LIFE INSIDE A SHIP Ship Hull Concept Transformation

The client plans to open a bookstore containing the function of book-selling, fashion display and food market. Considering the site's original function as a shipyard, the office attempts to transform the ship hull idea as the main concept. The language continues from underground to aboveground and become part of the landscape. In 4-month working time, I worked as an architectural assistant with Fabian Servagnat(Director), Dongshin Lee(Project Archtect) and Luba Valkova(architectural assistant).

SHIPYARD MEMORY

Flowing through the great Shanghai, Huangpu River function as the main channel for the freight transportation and foster numerous industrial heritage which represent Chinese’s exploring the modernity. Locating at the corner near Lujizui commercial center, the site is surrounded by old Shanghai factory and commercial skyscraper. Abundant culture background render the project become a place that recall historical memory under a high modern circumstance.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN Bridge Design Suzhou,China Y3Semester2 | 2016.3-2016.4 Academic Project | Group Work Tutor Christiane Herr Christiane.Herr@xjtlu.edu.cn As the brief required, we proposed a structural design for a pedestrian bridge with a clear span of 50m and the outcome is presented by a 1:50 model. We adapted the double-arch system for efficiency purpose as well as to reduce the height. The upper bracing intersect with each other to resist the lateral force and also connect with the bridge surface with cable. we use glass fiber as the main framework and plastic string to function as cable. We adapted 3D-printing techniques to create a solid and stable joint to transfer the entire load steadily to the foundation. The project is a group work with Kangwen Zhao, Yingda Sui and Xiaochen Zhou.
