“Age is a gift,” they say, and so we are humbled with the extraordinary present that has come our way at the time of this Fall Quilt Market.

Hoffman California Fabrics began 90 years ago.

Rube P. Hoffman started his company back in September 1924 in a small office/warehouse in Los Angeles. His goal in the post-WWI era simply was to hang out his shingle doing what he knew from his teenage years working for an uncle employed in the New York Garment District. For that reason, the company started as Hoffman Woolens.

Rube quickly made a name for himself as a producer and importer of the finest quality wool and many other fabrics. Just a few years later, the company name was changed to Hoffman California Fabrics, International, to reflect its speedy growth as a designer and converter of textiles, using original artwork. Rube was recognized by the Textile Association of Los Angeles (TALA) for helping its development into a significant trade organization.

He would see his sons, Philip and Walter, join him in business and oversee the company’s expansion into breathtaking Asian-themed prints, exciting tropicals and conversationals, and a wide range of beautiful screenprinted fabrics for quilting and fashion/homesewing. The “Hoffman boys” were instrumental in bringing authentic and exquisite batiks (designed in the U.S. and produced in Bali) to quilters – a first for the quilt industry. Hoffman California Fabrics continues to lead in the batik category as “the first, the finest and the favorite” of quilters around the world.

We have many families to thank for our success and longevity – our family of longtime employees both at our headquarters in Mission Viejo, California, and in Bali, Indonesia; our family of dedicated sales representatives in the U.S. and internationally; and our family of independent retailers committed to offering superiorquality fabrics to their customers.

It’s a dog-play-with-dog world in McKenna’s ferociously fun Dog Park. This new quilt pattern series features the quilter’s best friend at work and at play in seven blocks. Dog Park is the ideal sequel to McKenna’s winning, cat-themed series Wind In The Whiskers. There are skinny jeans, skinny lattes … and now, Skinny Stripe Blenders (Style #L7300) – the perfect add-on to quilts without adding calories! Each boasts at least 10 stripes per inch – the most of any striped fabric on the market. And carrying the Hoffman pedigree, these are no ordinary, basic, solid stripe. Skinny Stripes are artfully varied and slightly mottled to infuse quilts and sewing projects with texture and visual interest.

Style 1895 Bali Watercolors Introducing 23 new colors! We decided to add complementary colors to the Bali Watercolors line in an effort to freshen our palette and answer a few special requests. At the same time, we are filling in some mid-range values in greens, aquas and grays. For instance, you’ll find we added “greener grays” to the mix that complement our new release of batiks and will coordinate with our future releases. Since our “frost batiks” sold very well last Spring, we added 1895 307-Snow that is almost white and 1895 113-Frost that is light gray.

Hoffman Bali Batiks

There’s a New Eclecticism afoot where home style and design are inspired by a wide range of sources. You’ll find wonderful diversity in our late Spring 2014 collection of Hoffman Bali Batiks. Among the unique offerings are two selvage-to-selvage designs that act as “two fabrics in one” for use as borders and/or backgrounds.

Several geometric designs let quilters experiment with the modern aesthetic. These graphic patterns combined with our mottled hand-dyed Watercolors create visually pleasing quilt compositions. We borrowed the classic houndstooth motif from fashion and made it a big and bold “statement batik.” Demand continues for big floral prints and unique textures, so we’ve made sure to round out this collection with a few stand-out designs. Every quilter will find her color way, as our palette hits all the niches, from traditional to home décor to modern to bright. Yet, we’ve made sure lots of crossover potential exists.

Style #JNBP Hoffman California and Judy Niemeyer have collaborated on a twin set of 2-1/2” batik strips dubbed Quiltworx.com Bali Pops. Judy hand-selected Hoffman Bali Batiks that ideally coordinate with an assortment of her patterns.

Each of the two Quiltworx.com Bali Pops packs offer (48) 2-1/2” strips in a colorwash arrangement that complements Judy’s Wedding Ring series and other specially selected patterns. Further, Judy has organized each of the Pops into six groups of eight fabrics. This takes all the guesswork out of fabric selection! It also minimizes fabric waste, simplifies organization, and provides retailers (and quilters) a perfectly matched set of strips to those Judy uses in her projects.

Patterns requiring one Quiltworks Bali Pops include Waterfalls, Bali Bed Runner and Fractured Paint Box. Patterns requiring two of Judy’s Pops are Flowers for my Wedding Ring, Bali Wedding Star and Stepping Stones. Of course, quilters are free to use Quiltworx Bali Pops for their own unique projects. But Judy’s colorwash arrangements make these special Pops extremely convenient for quilters to follow her pattern designs and instructions so that they can achieve the best success possible in her paper-piecing method of quiltmaking.

Judy also has created four appliqué kits that coordinate with the Pops and the selected patterns. Both Judy’s patterns and appliqué kits must be ordered through Quiltworx. Orders for Quiltworx Bali Pops should be placed with Hoffman California.

The Quiltworx.com Bali Pops are distinguished as Group 1 and Group 2. These two Pops are sold together. So with an order of one box, the retailer receives three of the Group 1 Pops and three of the Group 2 Pops (for a total of six Pops per box).
