Hoffman California Fabrics

The History of Hoffman Fabrics. Hoffman California-International Fabrics was founded in Southern California in 1924 by Rube Hoffman. He found work as one of the first “Converters” in California (converting base color fabric into color-dyed fabrics). At this time, California was still in its very early modern history with a total state population of only 4.5 million people. This was the year the Hollywood sign was first erected (when it still said Hollywoodland), there were no freeways (the first was in 1940), and automobiles were only just beginning to become popular. Later in the mid 1920’s, Hoffman expanded into dyed rayons. The company then added yarn dyes to match the fabric colors he was creating. Over the next 30 years, Hoffman Fabrics became a major national player in the US fabric and fashion industry, providing California-by-the-Yard colors and designs for wool, cotton and rayon fabrics. These were sold to both manufacturers and the popular fabric department stores for those making their own shirts, dresses and pants. In 1955 Walter Hoffman came into the business, after serving in the Navy (stationed in Hawaii). Walter developed antique/retro style Hawaiian prints, had these manufactured in Japan, then brought these back to Hawaii, where they became popular as the iconic Hawaiian shirt. Walter was instrumental in helping many new brands get established including Ocean Pacific, Hang 10, Sundeck, Jantzen, Catalina, Malibu Originals, Laguna Sportswear and many other sportwear brands by providing printed fabric, including the first printed board short for Quiksilver. In 1960, Philip Hoffman came into the business, and started our retail division, which today focuses on the quilting and home sewing industries. Walter & Philip’s first priority was to spend time surfing in Hawaii and other of the world’s best surfing locations. Surfing the waves of the world, they began absorbing the styles of the varying beach cultures. During a surf trip to the Island of Bali, they discovered Batik prints, which they soon introduced to the world when they brought them back to California. Still to this day, Hoffman designs and manufactures the world’s finest Batik prints in Bali. The second, third and fourth generations of the Hoffman family work at the company today. Tony Hoffman (now President) came into the business in 1976, Marty Hoffman in 1982, and Robin Hoffman-Haack in 1995. Their children have followed suit and joined the company: Ryan Hoffman in 2005, Aaron Hoffman in 2011, and Hailey Hoffman in 2015. Hoffman Fabrics has gone on to open offices and create business relationships in over 40 countries. The company has become the world’s leading manufacturer of Bali Batiks. Our reputation for having unmatched quality of Hoffman Fabric screen prints, Digital Spectrum prints and manufacturing innovations is known throughout the world. Hoffman Fabrics’ priority has always been to incorporate sustainability and responsible business practices in the company’s design and fabric manufacturing operations. As early pioneers in big wave surfing and Hawaiian design, the Hoffmans have had a special connection with healthy oceans and a sustainable planet. The Hoffman Family and Hoffman Fabrics have supported hundreds of non-profit organizations and individuals over the past 50 years, and are actively involved in organizations supporting human rights, sustainability and the environment. Each year over 800 unique designs are created by our textile artists for our screen prints, digital collections, and our authentic Bali batiks. These fabrics are seen across the globe, not only on the bolt in retail shops, but also found in many major clothing and fashion retail brands, and other products.

Crystalia Digital printing captures layers of transparent colors, textures and the appearance of illuminated crystals or beach glass. The interplay of textures and light and dark areas produces lots of movement, lending visual interest to quilts and other home dec projects.

Stephanie Prescott, Director of Sales and Merchandising | 26

Hoffman California Fabrics

The Store Perspective. Hoffman Fabrics has always highly valued and appreciated the close partner relationships we have with our stores. I recently joined the Hoffman team as the Director of Sales and Merchandising, and am directly responsible for the relationships and communications we have with our Store owners and their staff. I come from the perspective of a quilt shop owner for 18 years, so am keenly aware of the specific needs and challenges that stores face every day. As the liaison between Hoffman and the shops, I know that nothing is more important than unique and engaging fabric designs. This is the clear differentiator for customers, and therefore shop owners. Hoffman Fabrics has long been the industry leader in exceptional quality, cutting edge design and using the latest in technological advances to stretch the boundaries of fabric creation and manufacturing. While working closely with our phenomenal design team, I strive to voice the needs of the shop and the consumer. I understand the importance of not only having beautiful fabrics, but fabrics that inspire to create masterpieces. The world of textile design and manufacturing is highly complex, and our business is project driven across multiple seasons, lines, processes and geographies. To that end Hoffman Fabrics, Sandy Muckenthaler, and myself have worked exceptionally hard to bring compelling projects that will easily translate into demos, classes and kits. Hoffman has its eye not only on what is trending currently in the quilt market and in the Home Dec arena, but more importantly on the pulse of where the trends are heading all while being innovative enough to set those trends. I am excited to work directly with you to strategize merchandising techniques, build strong kit programs, and assist you in creating signature projects that you can’t live without. Feel free to contact me to discuss best options and advantages for your store. Join me in our Hoffman journey, and together we will enrich the world of quilting. (800) 547-0100

Hoffman Spectrum Digital The exciting new world of digital fabric designs. Digital textile printing has come of age. There are many new advantages thanks to advanced technology to allow higher intensity of color, a more sustainable method of manufacturing with almost no waste, and very high quality designs with intricate detail impossible to create with any other current fabric printing medium. Up to 1 million colors. The brilliance of digital color is a considerable advantage. Current screen printing can only print up to 18 different colors. Digital printing on the other hand uses the CMYK method, and like an ink jet printer, the only limitation to colors is the number of inks used. This technique can create up to one million different color combinations. A design could easily be made with 40, 70 or 100 different colors and it would not affect the ability to print the design. Unlimited shades of a variety of colors create depth and perspective previously unattainable. Environmentally friendly. Digital printing is considerably more environmentally sustainable, as it eliminates the need for cleaning screens and rinsing out inks, giving digital printing a strong environmental benefit. Precise intricate detail. Digital printing gives considerable flexibility to the original artwork and allows for highly detailed panoramic and/or photographic prints. Additionally it is possible to increase the length between repeats or even completely do away with them. Digital printing measures up. Our high quality digital fabrics wash up beautifully. Hoffman Spectrum Digital Fabrics have a wonderful drape and feel. High quality is worth it. The specialized nature of digital printing involves base cloth preparation, limited runs, state-of-the-art technology, and specialized dyes. The manufacturing cost per yard is slightly higher than traditional screen printing but with many more benefits.

Jamie Fingal. Jamie Fingal is unique. She is a Hoffman Guest Designer, responsible for the Patriotic Palette you see here in the catalog. As a high personality artist, author, teacher, fabric designer, and curator from Orange, California her whimsical and abstract work has been juried into International quilt exhibitions, featured in many books and various magazines and television shows. She is the other half of the curating team of “Dinner at Eight Artists, with Leslie Tucker Jenison. We asked Jamie to bring her passionate and whimsical use of vibrant red-white-and-blue colors, shapes and textures to create Patriotic Palette. They were designed to stand out from the traditional national displays. Celebrate America. A little edgy, a little whimsical, but unmistakably patriotic. Hoffman California Fabrics

Jamie also is founder of The House Quilt Project, benefitting military veterans and their families. “I live in Southern California and am a mixed-media fiber artist who believes in giving back to my community with The House Quilt Project,” Jamie said. “I work with individual quilters to coordinate the making of patriotic house quilts for the walls of rooms for individuals wounded in service to our country, and Habitat for Humanity.” Participants make small house quilts at their own expense for donation to a wounded service member. Each house quilt is 12” wide by 16” high and is made to hang on a wall. Since the project began in 2010, more than 250 house quilts have been made on behalf of Furnishing Hope. This nationwide project continues. Learn more at jamiefingaldesigns.com.

It’s an official three-peat! Judy Niemeyer teams up a third time with Hoffman Fabrics on a fresh set of Quiltworx.com Bali Pops. Judy hand-selected fabrics from this mid-season collection of Hoffman Bali Batiks to create new colorwash arrangements for the Style #JNBP3 set. The set offers two Quiltworx.com Bali Pops, each with (48) 2-1/2” strips. The strips in each Pop are organized into six groups of eight fabrics. The colorwash arrangements complement a wide variety of Quiltworx. com quilt patterns, including Quiltworx Wedding Ring Quilt. Working with Judy’s strip set minimizes fabric waste, simplifies organization of your project, and provides a perfectly matched set of strips to those Judy uses in her samples. The two Quiltworx.com Bali Pops set includes two strip packs, each a different colorway. The Pops are distinguished as Group 1 and Group 2. A single order of #JNBP3 gives the retailer three of Group 1 and three of Group 2 (for a total of six Pops). Place your orders for #JNBP3 Quiltworx.com Bali Pops with Hoffman, and your orders for Judy’s patterns with Quiltworx.com.
