Summer 2008 Fall 2009
Message From the Dean This summer marks my third year as dean of the Frank G. Zarb School of Business. This milestone gives me the opportunity to reflect on the changes that have occurred at the Zarb School and to contemplate how we will continue to strengthen our programs in the future. I am proud of all the Zarb School’s accomplishments during my tenure as dean and am grateful for the strong support I have received from faculty, administrators, staff and, especially, students and alumni. When I began my journey as dean, three goals were foremost. First, in order to solidify the reputation of the Zarb School, it was imperative that we become nationally ranked. The allure that rankings bring to an institution is undeniable. Second, the Zarb School needed to strengthen connections with alumni. Nurturing these relationships significantly bolsters a school, providing a wealth of networking and career opportunities for students. In addition, successful fund-raising efforts are facilitated through a strong
alumni network. Third, our graduate programs needed to attract more of the best and brightest students. It gives me great pleasure to announce that these goals have been accomplished. The strength of our school has been formally recognized by U.S. News & World Report, BusinessWeek and The Princeton Review, which, through extensive surveys of business school deans, corporate recruiters and students, have ranked our programs among the best in the world. (For a detailed description of these rankings, visit hofstra.edu/Zarb and click on the images on the left side of the screen.) In May 2008 Edward G. Watson ’89, executive vice president of operations and technology at FannieMae, agreed to serve as president of the new Zarb School Alumni Association, a cohesive and comprehensive group that represents all Zarb undergraduate, M.B.A., M.S. and E.M.B.A. alumni. In just one year, this dynamic group has made significant strides toward enhancing the national reputation of the Zarb School and expanding networking and professional development opportunities for our alumni and students. Much of my time over the last three years has been devoted to alumni outreach, and these efforts have reaped tremendous benefits. Despite a challenging economic environment, gifts to the Zarb School are stronger than ever.
In fall 2008 the Zarb School’s first class of full-time day M.B.A. students commenced studies. This new cohort program, established through fund-raising efforts for scholarships and geared specifically toward highperforming students, has significantly enhanced the profile of our graduate population, with an average GPA of 3.2 and average GMAT score of 620. We continue to forge ahead with new programs and initiatives. This past spring semester, we had an impressive complement of lectures and networking events, featuring – among others – Nobel Laureate Dr. Robert F. Engle; Henry Keizer, global head of audit at KPMG; and Sir David Tweedie, chairperson of the International Accounting Standards Board. (For a full list of this semester’s events and activities, visit hofstra.edu/zarb and click on “Event Highlights.”) Additionally, we are expanding our online course offerings and exploring the possibility of a Zarb online M.B.A. program. This next academic year promises to be particularly exciting, as Hofstra University celebrates its 75th anniversary. In recognition of this milestone, each school on campus will host a major conference. We will announce the theme of the Zarb conference soon. Continued on next page.

Message From the Dean Continued from front page.
Over the past few months, I have had numerous conversations with President Rabinowitz about the Zarb School and the University. After talking about all that we have been able to achieve at the Zarb School, President Rabinowitz strongly encouraged me to take on a new role as senior executive adviser to the president – working directly with him to help accomplish many of these same goals, university-wide. I have agreed to do so. I remain focused on building strong relationships with all our constituencies, including alumni, businesses and corporations, donors, students and faculty, as well as continuing the great success that we have had in presenting high-profile conferences and events for the Hofstra community. I will continue as dean of the Zarb School until a successor is found. It is anticipated that this transition will take place sometime next summer. I look forward to another productive year at the Zarb School and, as always, welcome your comments and suggestions. Best regards,
Salvatore F. Sodano, B.B.A., ’77; M.B.A., ’83 Dean, Frank G. Zarb School of Business

News From Around HOFSTRA NEWS Around Hofstra Hofstra Receives Middle States Reaccreditation Hofstra University’s reaccreditation was affirmed by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education on June 25, 2009. Accreditation and assessment play a critical role in strategic planning and academic enterprise at Hofstra. Accreditation provides the University with the means to examine itself, the institution’s values, mission and goals, and verify the high quality of academic programs and student services. By participating in this process, Hofstra sends the message that it employs best practices, both in the classroom and in academic and administrative structure. More than 100 faculty, administrators, and students were directly involved for almost two years in the development of the self-study, a comprehensive and inclusive appraisal of values, strengths, structure and resources. Miller ’79. Mr. Miller added, “I would like to personally thank everyone who invested in Hofstra’s future through the Capital Campaign.” The Gala itself raised $1 million, thanks to contributions announced at the annual fund-raiser by Gala honoree and Hofstra Trustee Peter S. University Honored with CIO 100 Award for Innovative Technology A project giving Hofstra students virtual lab and mobile computing capabilities to access academic software from any location on campus earned the University a spot on CIO magazine’s list of the top 100 companies that are creating new business value through technological innovations. “This prestigious award is quite an honor, and it recognizes our innovative work in testing and implementing our Virtual Lab system for students to access their academic software from anywhere,” said Robert W. Juckiewicz, Hofstra’s vice president for information technology. “This is just one component of an ongoing strategy to support students who use technology ubiquitously and constantly for academic, social and work needs. More than 90 percent of incoming first-year students come to campus with a laptop; almost all carry a mobile phone. Recognizing this, Hofstra is working to create a fully mobile learning environment for students, so that all services are available to our students wherever they are in the world.” The top CIO 100 list includes AT&T; Dell; GE Energy; Infosys Technologies; JetBlue; Raytheon; T-Mobile; UPS; the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center; and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Hofstra is one of only seven colleges and universities listed. Some of the features for which Hofstra was cited include: ៉ The creation of Hofstra’s Virtual Computer Lab, which provides mobile access to software from any device running a browser. ៉ The availability of high-speed wireless technology on campus. ៉ In partnership with Google, Hofstra provides students with access to e-mail, calendars and Google Apps where they can create documents and invite others to work collaboratively from any location. ៉ The University has created “collaboratories,” innovative workspaces that utilize the latest software along with a physical environment to foster collaborative work among students. Hofstra utilizes the best technology from all major providers, such as Microsoft, Cisco, Google and IBM.
