2014-15 ANNUAL REPORT

Greetings From The Director Of Athletics Dear Friends of Hofstra Athletics, Thank you for your support of the Hofstra Pride during this past year. Our studentathletes, coaches and staff appreciate the commitment you continue to make to Hofstra Athletics. This past year was a very successful one and there were many outstanding performances and highlights from the past year that you will read about in this Annual Report. However, I would like to highlight some of the key moments from 2014-15.

2

One of our most significant highlights was having five teams compete in postseason play. Volleyball and softball, under firstyear head coaches Emily Mansur and Larissa Anderson, won Colonial Athletic Association championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The men’s basketball team posted a 20-win season and was selected to play in the College Basketball Invitational, while women’s basketball also won 20 games and earned an invitation to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The wrestling team, under first-year mentor Dennis Papadatos, sent two wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, marking the 19th consecutive season that the Pride has sent at least two wrestlers to nationals. In addition, the men’s soccer and women’s lacrosse teams won regular season CAA championships. During 2014-15 five student-athletes – Kelsie Wills (volleyball), Jonel Boileau (field hockey), Leah Galton (women’s soccer), Sam Llinares (men’s lacrosse) and Brittain Altomare (women’s lacrosse) – earned CAA Player of the Year accolades, the most in a single season since Hofstra joined the CAA in 2002. In addition, Kelsie and Brittain were named All-Americans in their respective sports. We also had many student-athletes earn all-region and all-conference accolades for their performance. Hofstra student-athletes excelled in the classroom where more than 200 studentathletes had a 3.0 GPA or higher in both the fall and spring semesters, with 26

THE OFFICIAL ONLINE HOME OF HOFSTRA ATHLETICS

student-athletes earning a perfect 4.0 GPA in one or both semesters. The cumulative GPA for all student-athletes this past year was a record 3.24. Three student-athletes – Jonel Boileau, Kelsie Wills and Caryn Bailey (softball) – were named the CAA ScholarAthlete of the Year in their sport, while several others earned academic recognition from their respective sports’ coaches associations. A school-best 10 Hofstra athletic teams - men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s tennis, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, women’s golf, softball, women’s soccer and women’s tennis achieved a perfect 1000 score on the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rates (APR) for the 2013-14 academic year. In addition, the softball and women’s tennis programs were recognized by the NCAA as both posted a multi-year APR in the top-10 percent of their respective sport throughout Division I. Hofstra Athletics also continued its tradition of service to the community. During the academic year, student-athletes from all 17 teams took part in more than 40 community service projects and totaled nearly 3,300 hours of service. One highlighted project was the Yards for Yeardley campaign. The event was in support of the One Love Foundation, which looks to bring education and awareness to college campuses regarding domestic violence. Students from all 17 teams got together and ran more than one million yards in just two days to help promote this outstanding campaign. Hofstra recognized the contributions of two outstanding individuals this past year with the naming of James C. Metzger Hall at James M. Shuart Stadium in honor of James C. Metzger ’83 and the renaming of the Hofstra Softball Stadium in honor of former coach Bill Edwards. Both Metzger and Edwards highlighted the first part of

the Hall of Fame Class of 2015, which will continue in October with the induction of the 1976 and 2000 NCAA tournament men’s basketball teams. The Hofstra Athletics Pride Club is in the midst of another successful year and I thank all those who continue to support our student-athletes and staff. The generosity of the members of the Pride Club continues to allow the University to support the various academic and athletic initiatives in place for Hofstra studentathletes. Special thanks to outgoing Pride Club President Colonel E. David Woycik for his outstanding leadership, the Pride Club board of directors and each and every Pride Club member. I also wish to thank Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz for his continued support of the Department of Athletics, as well as his leadership of our outstanding University. Due to the efforts of President Rabinowitz, our campus administration, faculty, staff and so many dedicated members of the greater University community, this was another memorable year for our students and Hofstra University. Thank you again for your continued support of Hofstra Athletics as we all look forward to continued success in the classroom and in the competitive venues.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey A. Hathaway Vice President and Director of Athletics Hofstra University

The Hofstra University community suffered a tragic loss in January when men’s lacrosse sophomore Joe Ferriso died in an automobile accident. We dedicate this Annual Report and the outstanding accomplishments of our 2014 -15 student-athletes in honor of Joe’s passion and commitment to the Hofstra Pride Family.

Academic Success ACADEMIC PROGRESS RATES 8

A school-best 10 Hofstra athletic teams achieved a perfect score in the Division I Academic Progress Rates (APR), which were released by the NCAA in May. Men’s Basketball, Men’s Golf, Men’s Tennis, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Cross Country, Field Hockey, Women’s Golf, Softball, Women’s Soccer and Women’s Tennis were the 10 programs that achieved a perfect 1000 score for the 2013-14 academic year. The APR, which has been in place for 11 years, provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each studentathlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility and retention, and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance.

A pair of Hofstra Athletic programs – softball and women’s tennis – were also recognized by the NCAA as both posted a multi-year APR in the top10 percent of their respective sport throughout Division I. This multi-year APR covers the 2010-11 to 2013-14 academic years.

Five CAA Player Of The Year Winners Highlight Successful Campaign For Hofstra Athletics coaches in the conference can vote on the award, and no coach is allowed to select his or her own player. Without bias or undue favor, Kelsie Wills (volleyball), Brittain Altomare (women’s lacrosse), Jonel Boileau (field hockey), Leah Galton (women’s soccer) and Sam Llinares (men’s lacrosse) highlighted an impressive Hofstra athletics season in 2014-15 by being chosen as the best player in the league in their respective sports.

12

“It’s a tribute to the caliber of studentathletes and the athletic department as a whole,” Boileau said. “We couldn’t have done it without our teammates, coaches and the administrators who all play major roles in our experiences at Hofstra.”

Awards in sports are not always a meritocracy. Fans stuff cyber ballot boxes to help their favorite players earn all-star nods. Past performances and name recognition can sometimes help an older athlete garner accolades at the expense of an emerging standout. Certain honors mean more to individuals based on the criteria involved in selection. For the five Hofstra student-athletes who won the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year award in 2014-15, the distinction was validation from those who most understand the individual’s contributions. The five winners marked an increase over the two CAA Player of the Year selections in 201314 and were the most since joining the CAA in 2002. Individual success also correlated with team achievement, as evidenced by volleyball’s thrilling five-set win at Charleston to lock up the conference championship and a NCAA Tournament berth.

Kelsie Wills

Jonel Boileau

“Without a doubt I’ve seen a significant increase in the quality of Hofstra Athletics over the past year, and the success this past season can be attributed to the continuous improvement and work done behind the scenes as well as on the court,” said Wills, who capped her storied career as the program’s all-time leader in kills with 1,942. “I think I speak for all the Player of the Year winners in saying we have a fantastic athletic community.” Athletic prowess isn’t the only characteristic that defined the quintet. Boileau and Wills were also chosen as CAA Scholar-Athletes in their respective sports. Altomare, a product of Wolfsville, Maryland, graduated in May with a degree in linguistics and early childhood education and accepted a job with the nonprofit Harlem Lacrosse and Leadership, where she works to help bring lacrosse to inner cities and assisting children in gaining acceptance to prestigious prep schools and universities. “We have the most amazing athletic department at Hofstra, and Jonel and Kelsie earning scholar-athlete awards is even more impressive than the incredible honor of being a CAA Player of the Year,” Altomare said. “The athletic community is so tight knit. The support is unparalleled.”

Boileau, a forward from Kelowna, British Columbia, graduated with a degree in international business. She will continue her field hockey career as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts, where she will pursue a master’s degree in sports management. A three-time NFHCA All-Mid East Region pick, Boileau’s senior year included 16 goals and 38 points. Her record-setting career at Hofstra included three All-CAA selections. She ended her career ranked third in goals (40) and fourth in points (114) in program history and became the first Hofstra player to win the CAA Player of the Year Award for her sport. “It gives me a great deal of pride to say I was the first Hofstra player to win the award, although I have no doubt that there will be many more winners to come from Hofstra Field Hockey,” Boileau said.

Altomare, Boileau and Wills all graduated in May following stellar careers.

An outside hitter from Matamata, New Zealand, Wills is one of only six players in program history to total at least 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs as she picked up 1,226 digs during her four seasons at Hofstra. She is also the first player in program history with three seasons of 500 or more kills. “All the accolades and statistics I have accomplished without a doubt mean a great deal more now than they did at the moment,” Wills said. “I didn’t have any focus toward achieving particular numbers during the season, so to be able to look back and see I made some history is very satisfying.”

“It meant a lot to me to join the Players of the Year,” Llinares said. “We have a passionate athletic community that has done tremendous things in the history of our program, so I’m just happy to be part of it and contribute to it any way I can. The success we’ve had across the different sports speaks wonders for the department. We have a tremendous staff at Hofstra that makes each athlete’s experience a great one.” Galton already pulled off one of sports’ most rare achievement in repeating a great season. The forward from Harrogate, England, scored a career-high 17 goals and 38 points and won her second straight CAA Player of the Year and was just the fifth player in league history to win the award more than once (and first non-William & Mary member). She will now look to be the first player in the 22-year history of the conference to win the award three times.

Leah Galton

Wills earned a degree in accounting with a minor in finance, though she is looking to continue her career as a professional in Europe. Wills was part of CAA championship teams in 2012 and 2014 and capped her career as an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America selection; making her one of just two players in program history to be named to a team by the AVCA, joining Elizabeth Curley. Wills was also just the seventh player in school history to earn all-region accolades.

became the first Hofstra Men’s Lacrosse student-athlete to post 50 points or more in consecutive seasons since Tom Kessler did it in 2000 and 2001. The 2014 USILA All-America honorable mention tallied five hat tricks this season including a career-best six goals against Manhattan. The third-year standout from Hauppauge also surpassed the 100-point plateau in his career in 2015 and now has 73 goals and 69 assists for 142 points, which is tied for 10th on the all-time Hofstra scoring list.

Boileau, Wills and Altomare put a stamp on their Hofstra careers, but the final chapters are yet to be written for Galton and Llinares. Both will enter their senior campaigns during the Sam Llinares 2015-16 athletic year looking to reach even more rarified heights if they can duplicate their early career success. Llinares is the lone Long Island native of the group and the attackman enjoyed a junior campaign that rewarded the decision to make him the conference’s preseason Player of the Year. In 14 games he recorded career-highs of 33 goals and 57 points for the Pride and

“I thank all the coaches who voted for me, it’s a huge honor and much appreciated,” Galton said. “It’s a confidence boost, and I work to earn the continued trust of my coaches who always support me and say ‘no one can stop you.’ My teammates always have my back and I would be no one without them. It’s a blessing to share the honors with four other great student-athletes. It shows just how much Hofstra Athletics has to offer and how strong we are becoming as a department. I just want to get out there and carry on that tradition and make Hofstra and everyone who supports us even more proud.” All five award-winners exemplify the essence of being a Hofstra student-athlete. Galton and Llinares will now look to lead a new group of high-caliber and high-character individuals entering the 2015-16 athletic year.

First Year Head Coaches Shine During Inaugural Seasons Coaching a team, at any level, is a difficult job. Being a first-year head coach is even more difficult as a person now needs to juggle the additional responsibilities that come with the top job. Many rookie head coaches endure a learning curve as they seek to establish a coaching identity. But a pair of Hofstra Pride coaches – Emily Mansur (volleyball) and Larissa Anderson (softball) – made it look easy in their inaugural seasons. The pair took over their respective programs this past year and led them to Colonial Athletic Association Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2014-15. While both coaches were in their first year and took over somewhat unexpectedly, the pair took different roads to the head job. Mansur served as an assistant coach for the Pride in 2013 under then-Head Coach Kristina Hernandez and was the interim head coach after Hernandez left suddenly for a job at Stetson University in March 2014.

On May 7, 2014, Mansur was appointed head coach following a national search. Anderson served as an assistant coach to Hall of Fame Coach Bill Edwards for 13 years, including 10 as associate head coach, and was set to take over the reigns whenever Edwards decided to retire. Well, that moment came in May 2014 as Edwards stepped down after 25 years and 928 wins. While Mansur took the “fast track” to her first collegiate head coaching position, she did not come into it unprepared. “I knew that I wanted to be a head coach one day, so I had a pretty good idea of how I would lead my own program,” she stated. “I had a chance to work as an assistant coach under different head coaches, both here and in Europe, and picked up different things from each of them so when the opportunity came I was prepared.” Anderson echoed her colleague’s sentiment, though she had several years to prepare for chance. “About five years ago, Bill started

talking about retiring but did not have a definitive plan. That is when we started working on the transition. At first it was about recruiting, so we could confirm with recruits that there would be a seamless transition. Then each year, he would delegate more and more responsibility to me. It is amazing how well he mentored me. It wasn’t until I was in this role that I realized how prepared I was to make the decisions that affect every aspect of the program.” The immediate success that both coaches encountered did not surprise either. “I knew that we could compete and win a championship,” said Mansur. “We had a phenomenal group of student-athletes who were excited for a change and I think that because I had established a great relationship with them as an assistant coach, they were ready to work hard for me and the rest of the coaching staff. They wanted to win and each one bought in to what we were trying to accomplish.”

Coach Anderson, along with Assistant Coaches Julie Meyer, Caitlin Dent and Brittany Garvey, were selected as the NFCA Regional Coaching Staff of the Year

Coach Mansur speaks with her team during a timeout at the CAA Championship in Charleston, South Carolina

“I was pleasantly impressed,” said Anderson. “I think we knew that James Madison was the more talented team, but that we felt we were the better team. The chemistry that this team had was better than any other team I have been a part of and it started from the first meeting we had. I was most impressed with how we handled adversity and that we were consistent in our approach each and every day. I think that played a big role in our

success down the stretch.” But neither coach is willing to rest on their laurels and are looking to maintain their already strong programs. “Going forward we have to take nothing for granted,” Anderson stated. “Sometimes we will have the more talented group, but we always have to outwork our competition and be better than we were the day before. I knew the culture I wanted to create and the players know that the tradition of Hofstra Softball will never change. We approached the year with the notion that we have had 25 years of

15

championships and we are going to keep building on that.” “To maintain our success we need to get each of our student-athletes to believe that Hofstra can be a championshipcaliber team every season,” explained Mansur. “The standards have changed for them. They need to be willing to do the extra work that it takes to be a champion and this is something we have already started to ingrain in our returning players as well as the incoming class for the 2015 season.” With their philosophies, fans of Hofstra Athletics can look forward to more successful seasons as Mansur and Anderson grow into grizzled veterans.

I had two great professors that I will never forget. Favorite Professor at Hofstra: Professor Barnes in the Psychology Department. Professor Barnes is someone who inspires his students without even knowing. Favorite Athletic Experience at Hofstra: Making it to the CAA championship game this past season. It was the first time in school history achieving this accomplishment. Another experience that I am grateful for is the opportunity to serve as the national rep for our entire conference on the NCAA National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. [I am one of 32 members on the board, we work together to protect the well-being of student-athletes on our campus, as well as encouraging a positive student-athlete image throughout our universities. This has been an opportunity of a lifetime that I will carry with me long after graduation.] Favorite Academic Experience at Hofstra: Having the opportunity to be a part of several committees and to take part in campus-wide engagement projects for Hofstra University.

SOFTBALL, CLASS OF 2015 Career Aspiration: I aspire to be a real estate mogul. Favorite Class at Hofstra: My favorite class was any business course taught by Professor Lenaghan. I took a total of four classes with her and every class I would strive to get an A because not only did she deserve my maximum effort, she made me want to be a better student.

BECKY CELORIO WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY CLASS OF 2016 Major: Exercise Science with a minor in Psychology Career Aspiration: Division I head cross country/track coach Favorite class at Hofstra: Personal and Community Health with Dr. Alberts because she made everything that we learned in other classes applicable to everyday life. She made an effort to make us comfortable enough to openly share our opinions on subjects that can be considered taboo and she made us look at things from a different point of view. She gave the class an assignment of doing random acts of kindness to show us how improving other people lives has a direct impact on our lives.

KELSIE WILLS VOLLEYBALL, CLASS OF 2015 Major: Accounting with a minor in Finance Career Aspiration: Professional volleyball player, future accountant Favorite Class at Hofstra: I would have to say my favorite classes were Tax I and II. My Favorite Academic Experience at Hofstra: Receiving my final Hofstra University cumulative GPA and reaching the goal I had set for myself during my freshman year.

Favorite Professor: Dr. Sell is my favorite professor because she absolutely makes you learn the material without dreading it or making it monotonous. Her lectures are interactive and labs are hands on, and when you get an assignment or test you realize how much you’ve learned. Favorite Athletic Experience at Hofstra: My favorite athletic experience was running my fastest 5k time this past track season. I had a very rough cross country season with four stress fractures and I lost a lot of training time. Seeing that all of my hard work had finally paid off in a big way was so rewarding and relieving. It gave me a lot more faith in myself. I ran a time of 17:49, a time I hadn’t come even close to since my freshman year (which was 17:59). Favorite Academic Experience at Hofstra: My favorite academic experience was getting a 4.0 GPA in the Fall 2014 semester after a lot of hard work. It was great to see my hard work pay off and to share the experience with my fellow student-athletes at 3.0 Night. Favorite Athletic Experience at Hofstra: Without a doubt both CAA Championship matches (2012 and 2014) come in at the top of the list when it comes to my favorite athletic experience. However I will always remember this past season when we competed against Stony Brook University. The atmosphere was what I would like to think Hofstra strives to create and the fact that so many members of Hofstra Athletics and the Hofstra community attended this match made it memorable! Favorite Academic Experience: I cannot really pinpoint one specific academic experience, however looking back at my four years at Hofstra, I would have to say that the fact I was able to maintain a good grade point average alongside my demanding schedule gave me a real sense of achievement.

Hofstra In The Community Throughout the 2014-15 academic year, Hofstra student-athletes dedicated themselves to serving others. Between Hofstra’s 17 athletic teams and more than 300 studentathletes, the Pride took part in 41 community service projects and totaled more than 3,300 hours of service. One highlighted project was the Yards for Yeardley campaign. The event was in support of the One Love Foundation, which looks to bring education and awareness to college campuses regarding domestic violence. Students from all 17 teams got together and ran more than 1,000,000 yards in just two days to help promote this outstanding campaign. Other community service projects included visiting local elementary schools for reading days along with sports clinics, the annual Shake-A-Rake event and the Special Olympics Polar Plunge.

The Department of Athletics is very proud of the terrific work of our student-athletes, and would like to send a special thank you to all of the student-athletes and coaches who dedicated their time and efforts to serve others this year. Want to Play College Sports? Here Are Some Tips to Help Get You On Your Way Kid Reporter

Kate Gilliam

March 31, 2015, 4:00 PM

Do you ever think about where you want to go to college? How about where you might have a chance to play a varsity sport? You may have big dreams about playing at a big school, but the question is: How do you get there? Kid Reporter Kate Gilliam interviewed two coaches from Hofstra University, men’s lacrosse coach Seth Tierney and softball coach Larissa Anderson, who spoke about recruiting and what they look for in potential student athletes.

Exposure is important. If you are looking to play a sport in college, it is important to be seen by coaches. You can play in tournaments and showcases, and you can also go to summer camps for your sport. Basically, you just
