Hofstra Claims CAA Title And Reaches Second Round Of The NCAA Championship Hofstra claimed its fourth CAA championship, and first since 2006, with a 2-0 victory over Delaware behind goals from All-American and CAA Player of the Year Joseph Holland and Nino Alfonso.

Daniel Massey’s header with 54 seconds left in the first overtime gave the Pride a

2-1 win over Lehigh in the first round of the NCAA Championship. The win was Hofstra’s 14th of the season.

Harri Hawkins anchored a defense that posted eight shutouts and held

Women’s Soccer

Trip To NCAA Second Round And CAA Regular Season Championship Highlight 2015 Season Led by three-time CAA Player of the Year Leah Galton’s 12 goals and 30 points, Hofstra posted 13 wins and won the CAA regular season championship.

The Pride earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship and advanced to the second round on penalty kicks at Georgetown. Reserve keeper Ashley Wilson made a key save during penalty kicks to help Hofstra move on.

Kristin Desmond ranked second on the team in scoring with 18 points on five goals and a team-high eight assists.

Hofstra Wins 21 Matches, Earns Share Of CAA Regular Season Championship

CAA Setter of the Year Hannah Klemm’s 1,493 assists were the second-highest single season total in program history and ranked fifth in the nation.

Hofstra won its first CAA regular season championship since 2006 with a 12-4 record in league play, with Veronika Kostova leading the Pride with 468 kills.

14 Wins and CAA Semifinal Appearance Highlight 2015 Season Goalkeeper Carys Swan had nine of Hofstra’s 14 wins. The 14 victories were the second most in program history.

Stella Schoen enters her senior season ranked eighth all-time in points (86) and goals (33), and sixth all-time in assists (20).

Samantha Schlegel was one of the top freshmen in the CAA and tallied seven goals and an assist in her debut season.

Claudia Marin Samper enjoyed one of the best seasons in program history with 19 goals, 16 assists and 54 points and became Hofstra’s first NFHCA All-American since 2011.

Women’s Cross Country

Hofstra Posts Best CAA Championship Finish In A Decade During 2015 Season Hofstra’s sixth-place finish was the Pride’s best conference finish since finishing in a three-way tie for fifth place at the 2005 CAA Championship.

All-CAA selection Becky Celorio recorded the second-best 6K time in school history (21:21) to place 11th at the CAA Championship. Her time was just 10 seconds off the school mark of 21:11 set

by Mary Sullivan in 2005.

Angelica Peck and Becky Celorio combined to lead the Pride in all six meets in 2015.

Peck was Hofstra’s top finisher twice, while Celorio led the way four times.

Best Ever CAA Finish Highlights 2015 Campaign Hofstra placed fourth at the CAA Championship for its best-ever showing, besting its fifth-place finish in 2007.

Alan Hetherington set an 8K personal best at the CAA Championship with a time of 25:43.

Jack Finlayson’s 10K time of 32:53 at the NCAA Northeast Regional was a personal best and the ninth best time in school history.

2015-16 Men’s Cross Country Team Alan Hetherington All-CAA performer Douglas Dourado posted the second-best 8K time (25:13) in program history to place 12th. His time was 11 seconds off the school record of 25:02 set by Daniel Rono in 2010.

CAA Regular Season Title and NIT Bid Highlight 2015-16 Season

CAA Player of the Year Juan’ya Green led the Pride in scoring (17.8) and assists (7.1), ranking sixth in the nation in assist average.

Rokas Gustys was one of the most improved players in the nation and averaged 13.5 points and a CAA-best 13 rebounds per game, a total that ranked second in the nation.

Hofstra won the CAA regular season title for the first time with a 72-63 win over Charleston and earned an automatic bid to the NIT, playing a first round game at George Washington. Brian Bernardi scored 13 points in the win over Charleston to help the Pride earn the title.

Ameen Tanksley ranked second on the team in scoring at 15.8 points per game, one of five Pride players to average in double figures, as Hofstra won 24 games for its highest win total in 10 years.

Hofstra’s WNIT Run Caps Off 25-win Season The Pride advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT, defeating Harvard, Villanova and Virginia in the first three rounds. Hofstra last advanced to the WNIT Quarterfinals in 2007.

Ashunae Durant averaged 11.4 points and 8.9 rebounds to help Hofstra to its 25 wins, the second-highest total in the Pride’s Division I history.

Hofstra’s 14 home wins tied for the highest total in program history.

Hofstra Sends Two Wrestlers To NCAA Championships At Madison Square Garden

Michael Hughes and Jamel Hudson qualified for the NCAA Michael Hughes Championships with third and fourth place finishes at the EIWA Tournament.

Hofstra placed sixth at the Lock Haven Classic behind placewinners Bryan Damon, Kyle Krasavage, Frank Affronti and Michael Hughes.

Hofstra’s seventh-place finish at the New York State Championship was highlighted by a championship win by Michael Hughes and place-winning performances by Frank Affronti, Jahlani Callender, Bryan Damon and Cory Damiana.

Series Sweep Over College Of Charleston Highlights 2016 Campaign Hofstra swept a three-game series from College of Charleston, which was ranked No. 11 in the NCAA Baseball RPI at the time. David Leiderman’s two-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning of game one gave the Pride a 4-3 win.

Teddy Cillis tied for the team lead in wins with three and home runs with nine.

Brad Witkowski led the Pride in batting (.289) and doubles (13).

John Rooney threw a complete game four-hitter versus the Cougars and was the first Pride freshman since 2004 to hurl a complete game.

Hofstra Advances To CAA Quarterfinals In 14-Win Season The Pride’s win over Delaware in the CAA Championship opening round, which featured a straight set win from Disha Yellayi, was Hofstra’s first since the 2008 season.

Disha Yellayi Carmen Pestano Hofstra picked up its first-ever win over Delaware on March 19 capped off by a comefrom-behind win from Carmen Pestano that featured a 13-11 third set score.

Freshman Michal Kaplan helped the Pride to its highest win total since 2007-08, tying for the team lead with 16 singles victories.

Sarah Herndon also picked up 16 wins during her freshman season and teamed with Michal Kaplan for 12 doubles wins.

Marcus Smith’s All-CAA Selection Highlights 11-Win Campaign Niko Vulinovich and Gustav Akesson won the Flight A doubles title at the 2015 Hofstra Invitational.

Marcus Smith tied for the team lead with 12 wins in earning All-CAA second team accolades.

Leonardo Pires was a finalist at the Stony Brook Invitational.

Sean Cavanaugh picked up three top 10 finishes in 2015-16 including a fifth-place tie at the Monmouth Hawk Invitational.

Victory Over Eventual National Champion North Carolina Highlights Hofstra’s Nine Win Campaign

Sam Llinares scored five goals in Hofstra’s season-opening 10-5 win over North Carolina, which would go on to win the 2016 National Title.

Pride’s Season Highlighted By Strong Individual Performances In her first season with the Pride, graduate transfer Lindsay Scott led the Pride with 52 goals and 59 points. The 52 goals are the second-highest single season total in program history.

Shelby Milne led Hofstra in ground balls (26) and caused turnovers (22).

Lindsey Alfano capped off her stellar career with 36 draw controls, 23 ground

balls and 16 caused turnovers, ranking second on the team in all three categories.

Lexi Lenaghan tallied 18 goals and eight assists to rank second on the team in scoring and was one of the top freshmen in the CAA.

Hofstra Posts 24-Win Campaign Brittany Allocca’s nine home runs led the Pride, and she was second on the team with a .336 average.

Hofstra Athletics Social and Digital Media Success Hofstra Athletics saw a dramatic increase in its social media platforms during 2015-16. The Hofstra Pride Facebook page saw a 20% increase in likes from the previous year, while the @HofstraPride Twitter account had an 11% increase in followers from 2014-15. The biggest jump in followers came on Instagram, where the @hofstrapride account saw a 32% increase.

Streamed 79 home events last year = 27,260 total unique visitors to the Pride Productions portal. Also streamed 178 audio only events via the Pride Productions portal.

The official YouTube page of Hofstra Pride Athletics saw nearly 400 videos uploaded, equaling 114,072 minutes of watch time.

Out of approximately 38,779 print and online clips reported to the University during the 2015-16 year, Hofstra Athletics accounted for 14,047 (36%) of all clips.

Academic Success The work of Hofstra University studentathletes in the classroom continued its recent sensational trend as the group compiled a 3.23 grade point average in the spring 2016 semester and earned a record 3.26 grade point average for the entire 2015-16 academic year. The 3.26 grade point average for the academic year represents a new record for Hofstra student-athletes.

(3.54) all averaged at least a 3.50 grade point average for the spring semester.

Other highlights from the 201516 academic year include: • The spring semester saw a spectacular 114 studentathletes named to either the Provost’s (4.0 GPA) or Dean’s List (3.5 or higher), while 94 student-athletes earned one of those distinctions during the fall semester.

• The Hofstra Volleyball program led the way among all the Pride teams as they had a team grade point average of 3.63 for the year. A total of 14 Hofstra teams had grade point averages of at least 3.00 and eight reached a threshold of 3.30. The volleyball squad earned the top spot in a close race as men’s tennis (3.57), women’s soccer (3.55) and field hockey

• Nearly 40% of Hofstra student-athletes earned recognition as either a Dean’s or Provost’s List member and more than 65% of the entire student-athlete population compiled at least a 3.00 grade point average. Women’s soccer had 18 student-athletes named to either the Provost’s or Dean’s list to lead all Hofstra teams with honorees.

• Hofstra student-athletes have now averaged at least a 3.00 grade point average in eight consecutive semesters.

• This year also saw a school-record 13 Hofstra teams have perfect 1,000 single year scores (out of the 17 teams that the University sponsors) in the latest NCAA Academic Progress Rates.

The second of two Class of 2015 Hall of Fame induction ceremonies featured the 1975-76 and 1999-00 men’s basketball teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

ESPN College Basketball analyst Jay Bilas served as the master of ceremonies for the evemt, while Rich Laurel and Coach Roger Gaeckler spoke on behalf of the 1975-76 team, and Jay Hernandez and Coach Jay Wright delivered remarks for the 1999-00 team.

In addition, the 2015-16 Hofstra Women and Men’s Basketball Teams were introduced with remarks from Coaches Krista Kilburn-Steveskey and Joe Mihalich. Outgoing Hofstra Athletics Pride Club President Col. E. David Woycik was also recognized for his outstanding service to Hofstra Athletics and was presented with a framed number 5 jersey, representing his five years as president.

NCAA Runs Unite Two Highly Successful Hofstra Programs The Hofstra Men’s and Women’s Soccer programs have experienced their share of success during the history of each program, but the 2015 Pride Soccer season took both squads to a whole new level as each advanced to the second round of their respective NCAA Tournament.

The two teams, which share a unique connection as Head Women’s Soccer Coach Simon Riddiough played for Head Men’s Soccer Coach Richard Nuttall as an undergraduate student-athlete at Hofstra from 1990 to 1994, have been two of the Pride’s strongest programs recently.

Since 2004 the two programs have combined for nine NCAA Tournament appearances and that combined success has allowed each program to feed off one another as they continue to pursue their championship aspirations.

“The success of our program in 2015 was thoroughly enjoyable,” said Riddiough.

“The fact that the men’s team had similar success made the season even better.

Obviously Richard and I have a special bond and a great friendship that goes back more than 25 years, and as an alum of the program, I revel in any success that they achieve.”

Nuttall echoes Riddiough’s sentiment, “Seeing Simon build the women’s program into what it has become makes me incredibly proud as his former coach and as a friend and colleague. I think that having both teams successful is a benefit for all of our programs here at Hofstra and for soccer on Long Island as

a whole. The camaraderie between our programs starts with the coaches, but extends to the student-athletes on both teams. I think that they are each other’s biggest fans.”

The similarities don’t end with the head coaches of each program either – as each squad was led on the pitch by dynamic superstars (Leah Galton and Joseph Holland) who posted remarkable seasons that would culminate with both winning Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year honors and earning All-America accolades.

Despite being picked third in the preseason CAA Coaches poll, a quick start to the 2015 campaign would change doubters into believers as the Pride men won its first four contests of the season, including a season-opening 2-1 victory over #15 Syracuse to get the historic

season started. In fact, Hofstra got off to a 6-1 start, with its lone defeat coming at the hands of a nationally-ranked American team. The Pride would add its second ranked win of the season, defeating CAAfoe #24 UNCW, 2-1, on September 19 to open conference play with a resounding result that showed the CAA and the nation that Hofstra was a force to be reckoned with in 2015.

Riddiough’s group would begin the season at the challenging Penn State Invitational, where the Pride would face two of the top teams in the nation. The competition would prove the Pride’s mettle as Hofstra dropped narrow one-goal contests to nationally-ranked Penn State (#6) and Rutgers (#24). As it turned out, those two squads would turn out to be two of the best in the nation as the Nittany Lions went on to capture the National Title, while Rutgers advanced to the College Cup before falling in the National Semifinals to Penn State. Following that start to the season, Hofstra won five straight games and eight out of nine to put them on a path to success.

Conference play would then become the most important part of the season for both teams as they strove to capture regular season titles.

On the women’s side, the Pride would only suffer one defeat during its conference

slate as they won four of their first five with an overtime loss to UNCW being the lone defeat. The phenomenal season would see Hofstra go 7-1-1 in CAA regular season play and win its final three conference matches to set the standard and earn the right to host the conference tournament, a feat the men would soon match.

The men’s team would win its first five CAA games and after suffering a 1-0 loss to Charleston on October 17 for its first conference setback, the Pride once again answered the bell and defeated #10 Elon for arguably the biggest statement win of the season. That victory ultimately helped Hofstra capture the regular season CAA crown and was the program’s first win over a top-10 program since defeating then-#7 Old Dominion in 2005.

Coach Nuttall’s squad would ride that wave into a tremendous showing in the CAA Championship as they didn’t allow a goal in their two matches in earning consecutive 2-0 victories over James Madison and Delaware to capture the CAA crown.

That showing would lead to Hofstra earning a first round home game in the NCAA Tournament, where the Pride defeated Lehigh for their third-ever NCAA Tournament victory.

double-overtime loss to eventual CAA Champion James Madison in the semifinals but the outstanding season was rewarded shortly thereafter as Hofstra earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history. From there, the Pride would advance to the second round as they tied Georgetown, but used a 4-2 advantage in penalty kicks to move on to the second round. Just like the men’s team, it was the third appearance in the NCAA Second Round, and was one more unique connection between two programs steeped in success and unity.

With Nuttall and Riddiough firmly entrenched as leaders of their respective programs for the foreseeable future, both have plans to add more successful seasons that each program can share in.

Sophomore Rokas Gustys emerged as one of the preeminent big men in college basketball in 2015-16. The 6-9 forward averaged a double-double with 13.5 points and 13 rebounds per game, leading the CAA and ranking second in the nation in rebounding. He had 22 doubledoubles on the season and set a CAA Championship record with 23 rebounds in the championship game against UNCW. Gustys, who set the Hofstra single season record (Division I era) with 442 rebounds, earned All-CAA, All-NABC District and AllMet accolades.

Senior guard Juan’ya Green played just two seasons at Hofstra, but had an incredible year that saw him earn Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America, CAA Player of the Year, All-NABC District, All-ECAC and All-Met accolades. He averaged 17.8 points and 7.1 assists per game, one of just four players in the nation to average 17 points and seven assists. He closed his career with a combined 2,317 points between Hofstra and Niagara.

His 1,186 Hofstra points rank 22nd all-time and his 463 career assists place him sixth on the all-time list. His 243 assists in 2015-16 is a program record.

Joe Mihalich picked up the 300th victory of his career in an 84-80 win at La Salle on December 2, 2015. Coach Mihalich, a 1978 graduate of La Salle, had spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach for the Explorers. He is now 319-250 in his 19 seasons as a collegiate head coach.

Madison Square Garden

Hofstra returned to Madison Square Garden for the first time in six seasons and recorded an 86-80 win over Appalachian State in the Aeropostale Holiday Festival. The win was Hofstra’s first at the World’s Most Famous Arena since 2006 and improved the Pride’s record to 10-9 alltime at the Garden.

Florida State Win

The Pride celebrates in the locker room following an 82-77 win over Florida State at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Brian Bernardi led four players in double figures with 24 points. The win was Hofstra’s first over Florida State and just the fifth win against a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Hofstra University Basketball programs had great success in 201516. Both teams advanced to the postseason, the only Colonial Athletic Association institution to have its men and women’s team compete in postseason play. The women’s team posted a 25-9 record, one win shy of the school record for wins, and advanced to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament Quarterfinals. The 20-win season was Hofstra’s ninth overall and second in as many years. The Hofstra men posted a 24-10 record, won the CAA Regular Season championship and earned an automatic bid to the National Invitation Tournament. The Pride’s 24 wins tied for the second-most in the Division I era (since 1972-73).

Ashunae Durant

Sophomore forward Ashunae Durant followed up her 2014-15 Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year Award by earning second team All-CAA accolades in 2015-16. Durant averaged 11.4 points and a team-best 8.9 rebounds per game. Durant also was named to the All-Met Second Team by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association.

Darius Faulk, wearing Hofstra’s special pink uniforms for breast cancer awareness, enjoyed her best season at Hofstra as the senior guard averaged 9.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and a team-best 5.2 assists and 1.9 steals per game. Faulk earned All-CAA Defensive Team honors for her fine play.

Hofstra advanced to the WNIT Quarterfinals for the second time in program history with a 65-57 win over Virginia. The Pride was also WNIT Quarterfinalists in 2007. Hofstra advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Harvard, at Villanova and Virginia.

Home Dominance

Hofstra, tipping off against CAA-rival College of Charleston, was 14-1 at home in 2015-16.

The 14 wins tied the program record for home wins set by the 1978-79 squad.

Q&A With Jen Pawol Former Hofstra Softball studentathlete Jen Pawol made history this past summer when she became the first female umpire in the Gulf Coast League (GCL) since 1978 and the first female umpire in Minor League Baseball since 2007. Pawol made her debut Friday, June 24 when she worked the GCL Blue Jays versus GCL Tigers game in Dunedin, Florida. She became the seventh woman to umpire a Minor League Baseball game, joining Bernice Gera (1972), Christine Wren (1975-77), Pam Postema (1977-89), Theresa Cox Fairlady (1989-91), Ria Cortesio (1999-2007) and Shanna Kook (2003-04).

Pawol, who played for Hofstra from 1996 to 1998, attended the 2016 Minor League Baseball Umpire Training Academy in Vero Beach, Florida. She was selected for the MiLB Advanced Course,

Q: JP:

How did you end up becoming an umpire?

I chose to transition into umpiring as I finished up my playing career. Umpiring became the next challenge for me to channel my drive into.

Q: JP:

What is more difficult, playing or umpiring?

Umpiring is, by far, much harder than playing. I used to obsess about hitting well over .300 during my season to be considered a “good” hitter. As an umpire, to be considered “good,” I have to get every single call correct game after game. Umpires have to “bat” 1.000 every time they take the field.

Q: now?

How did playing at Hofstra prepare you for what you’re doing

JP:

Competing for Head Coach Bill Edwards had a direct impact on my success now on the professional baseball field, as a dual business owner and an art educator.

Coach Edwards expected and cultivated all of the women on his teams to be independent thinkers and to become self-made. He encouraged all of the women to think for themselves; to make split-second decisions on the field to allow their individual talent to express

She batted .332 for her career and her nine career triples ranks 10th all-time in program history, and her 15 stolen bases in 1998 is good for eighth on the single season chart.

A weak umpire will continue to doubt themselves when pressure from fans, coaches or players arises in response to a call.

Q: JP:

What were you thinking as you got ready for that first game?

I was enjoying the experience of my first day as a professional umpire. The Blue Jays were the home team, and their umpire locker room was the biggest I had ever seen dedicated to the umpires and was full of all the amenities one could think of, as well as plenty of space for stretching out to warm up. We had everything we needed to prepare mentally and physically for the game.

Q:

Was there anything done prior to the game to acknowledge you and the somewhat historic nature of your first game, or was it just business as usual?

JP:

We did take a commemorative photograph which included my partner, Scott Molloy, and both

managers. Aside from that special moment at the plate meeting, we got right down to business as usual. The pitcher threw his eight warm up pitches, the catcher threw the last one down to second base, and I swept the plate, got into position as did the batter and yelled “Play!”

Q: JP:

What was your first call – do you remember where the pitch was?

First pitch of the game was a ball. The batter struck out looking, which made my first big call a called strike out!

Q:

You mentioned earlier that you operate two businesses in addition to umpiring, can you elaborate?

JP:

After majoring in fine arts at Hofstra, I continue to make artwork as a professional photographer and artist with my own studio (www. pawolpictures.com). The paintings I have been making over the years are of the strike zone of games I umpire or watch live. I also pursued an art education teaching career, having earned my K-12 NYS Teaching Certification in 2008. I also operate a second business called Evolve, where I train baseball and softball players to prepare for the college recruiting process, as well as encourage them to become wellrounded student-athletes in the arts, umpiring, and local community.

Men’s Lacrosse Travels To Japan For International Friendship Games R

The Hofstra University Men’s Lacrosse team took an eightday trip to Tokyo, Japan, for the 27th International Friendship Games hosted by the Japan Lacrosse Association (JLA).

This was the Pride’s second trip to Japan after a similar trip in 2012.

Hofstra played five games and conducted a lacrosse clinic during the goodwill tour, which was made possible in large part by support from Drs. Arno and Mindy Fried. The JLA invitation was initiated

by Yusuke Sasaki, Director of the JLA, who has known Coach Tierney since 1989 when both were teammates at Johns Hopkins University.

Hofstra Athletics In The Community

Throughout the 2015-16 academic year, Hofstra student-athletes dedicated themselves to serving others. Among Hofstra’s 17 athletic teams and more than 300 student-athletes, the Pride took part in 47 community service projects and totaled more than 3,100 hours of service.

Projects ran the gamut from educational efforts in local schools, supporting charitable causes for local organizations and sharing athletic skills with youth groups, as well as supporting University efforts with the Shake-a-Rake program, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and the Colonial Athletic Association Blood Drive and Food Drive Challenges.

Among the groups that Hofstra Athletics partnered with in 2015-16 were: The HEADstrong Foundation, Roosevelt Charter Academy, The Let All The Children Play Foundation, The Long Island Children’s Museum, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, Winthrop Hospital, Special Olympics, Make-a-Wish, Girls On The Run, Rolling Thunder, Ruff House Rescue, Ariana’s Angels, Girl Scouts of Nassau County, The Bethany House, The Mary Brennan INN, the Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation and the One Love Foundation.

Student-Athlete Development The Hofstra University Office of Student-Athlete Services is fully committed to providing essential resources to our student-athletes in order to achieve a positive student-athlete experience. This experience focuses on five key areas including, academic achievement, athletic excellence, personal development, career development and commitment to service. It is our mission to see those opportunities fulfilled, and for all of our student-athletes to be prepared for life after college and their time on the playing field.

During the 2015-16 academic year, different presentations and workshops were held in the areas of health and safety as well as personal and career development. Health and safety presentations were geared towards all student-athletes, while career and personal development workshops were tailored toward individual class years.

Student-Athlete Advisory Committee The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is made up of two representatives from each of our 17 Division I athletic teams. The members are selected annually by their coaches and/or peers to represent their respective team on the committee. Within SAAC, there is an Executive Board that is voted on by all members of the committee at the conclusion of prior academic year. The Executive Board is responsible for setting all meeting agendas, as well as overseeing specific operations of SAAC including the Pride Cup competition, event coordination and community outreach.

The role of SAAC on the campus of Hofstra University as well as within the CAA is to: • Promote communication between athletic staff and student-athletes.

• Build a sense of community within the athletic program involving all athletics teams.

• Organize community service efforts.

• Create a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees.

• Promote a positive student-athlete image.

• Generate a student-athlete voice within the NCAA structure by recommending NCAA legislation and provide responses to proposed legislation.

• Review, react and comment to the governance structure on NCAA activities and other subjects of interest.

• Participate in the administrative process of athletic programs and the NCAA.

The Hofstra University Department of Athletics, in conjunction with the Hofstra Athletics Pride Club, hosted the 27th Annual Hofstra Pride Golf Classic and Auction on September 17 at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, New York. One of the top events of the year for friends of Hofstra Athletics, this year’s golf classic honored a trio of award winners.

The night’s main honorees were Joe and Jill Carrello.

Jill is a two-time graduate of Hofstra and also a founding sister of the Hofstra chapter of Alpha Phi sorority. She currently serves as vice president of public relations for the Huntington Foundation for

Excellence in Education. Joe, a 1991 graduate of Hofstra and a four-year starter on the Hofstra Men’s Lacrosse team, is a mortgage banking professional with more than 21 years of experience. He has served on the Hofstra Athletics Pride Club Board of Directors since 2007.

Also recognized during the evening’s awards ceremony was Paul Flamm as the Jack Lenz Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award winner and John Frew as the Joseph M. Margiotta Award recipient. The Jack Lenz Award is presented in recognition of exceptional and dedicated service for more than 20 years to the Hofstra Athletics Pride Club and Hofstra University Department of Athletics in support of athletics and academics. The Joseph M. Margiotta Award is presented in recognition of exceptional and dedicated service to the Hofstra Athletics Pride Club and support of our student-athletes.

NCAA Quarterfinals Return to Hofstra Hofstra University will serve as host for the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinals in 2017 and 2018. It will be the ninth and tenth times that Hofstra will serve as host of one of the national quarterfinal doubleheaders, most recently in 2014.

The 2017 Division I Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals will be split between James M. Shuart Stadium and the University of Delaware Stadium in Newark, Delaware. In 2018 two quarterfinals games will be held again at Hofstra, while the other quarterfinals matchups will be at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.

The 2014 NCAA Quarterfinal crowd of 13,519 is the third largest attendance in NCAA Division I history and the largest-ever lacrosse crowd on Long Island. In 2011, 13,447 watched the NCAA Quarterfinals at Hofstra while a then-NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship Quarterfinal record of 12,292 witnessed the 1999 NCAA Quarterfinals. A crowd of 10,510 fans attended the 2001 Quarterfinals.

NCAA Wrestling at Madison Square Garden With Hofstra University serving as host, two Pride student-athletes, Jamel Hudson at 141 pounds and Michael Hughes at 285 pounds, were among the 330 student-athletes who competed in the three-day NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, that were held for the first time ever in New York City at Madison Square Garden from March 17-19.

The Championships were a huge success. Overall, the six sessions of the 2016 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships recorded the thirdhighest attendance (110,194) in Championship’s history, following St.

Pride Cup community wide initiatives. Points are earned through several categories. Teams earn points through academic and athletic success, acting as student leaders through taking part in community service initiatives, attendance at personal and career development programming, as well as attendance at athletic competitions of their peers.

Teams can also earn bonus points through outstanding efforts in several of the above-mentioned categories.

The Pride Cup is awarded to the team with the highest total score at the end of each year.

Staff News Four Coaches Sign Contract Extensions Men’s Basketball Coach Joe Mihalich, Volleyball Coach Emily Mansur, Women’s Soccer Coach Simon Riddiough and Baseball Coach John Russo each signed multi-year contract extensions during the 2015-16 academic year.

The wrestling team captured their second Pride Cup title, after winning their first competition in 2011-12. The team excelled throughout the year in their dedication to involvement and service, scoring 11,350 points. In second place was the Pride Women’s Tennis team, followed by the Hofstra Field Hockey program in third place.

Mattessich, along with CLA Director of Development Chris Voelker, and CLA founder and President Matej Bodul, will be charged with raising awareness and developing a national lacrosse program in time for the 2018 FIL Championships in Manchester. England.

Mattessich, a Croatian-American who was born in Mali Losinj, Croatia and raised in Susak, has enjoyed a 40+-year athletic career as a Division I student-athlete, a coach and an administrator. He joined the Hofstra staff in the summer of 2013.

Pride Deputy AD Named Head Coach Of Croatian National Lacrosse Team Hofstra University Deputy Director of Athletics Dino Mattessich was named the men’s lacrosse national team coach for Croatia this past May. Croatia is only the fifth nation in the Balkans to become a lacrosseplaying nation, joining Bulgaria, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey.

Croatia Lacrosse was started in 2011 and a group of players and supporters developed club teams in Zagreb, New Zagreb and Varazdin. With the assistance of key individuals in Croatia, the U.S., the Serbian and Slovenian Lacrosse Federations and eventually FIL, the Croatian Lacrosse Association was formed.

Hofstra University Associate Dean for the Center of University Advising Rachel PeelMacandrew has been appointed to the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Region 1 Selection Committee. In her role on the fivemember committee, Peel-Macandrew will take part in selecting regional finalists and forwarding their applications to the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee for its review.

After eight years in the financial services industry, PeelMacandrew came to Hofstra in 2003, first serving as an assistant dean before being promoted to an associate dean in 2007. She supervises and directs the student-athlete advisement program, helping to develop a comprehensive advisement center for all student-athletes while ensuring compliance with the NCAA. She also coordinates registration efforts and develops graduation plans.

30 Four members of the Hofstra Women’s Lacrosse family were part of the first-ever United Women’s Lacrosse League Championship as the Long Island Sound captured the title with a 13-8 win over Boston on July 31. Head Coach Shannon Smith coached the Sound to the title, while Assistant Coach Shanna Brady and alumnae Kelsey Gregerson and Lindsay Scott played on the team.

Andrew Mundy (center), a freshman on the baseball team, was Hofstra’s 10,000th blood donor since 2001 and was recognized for his milestone donation during a men’s basketball game.

Lizanne Murphy ’07 helped Canada reach the Olympic Women’s Basketball Quarterfinals at the 2016 Rio Games. Team Canada finished with a 3-3 overall record with Murphy recording 14 points, five rebounds and six assists in five games played. Murphy is the first two-time Olympian in Hofstra history as she was also a member of Team Canada at the 2012 London Games.
