In this year’s publication, we highlight the many accomplishments and accolades of our student-athletes and coaches. Their commitment to Hofstra University - in the classroom, in competition, and in the community – provides inspiration to us all. You will also find information about the Hofstra Pride Club, our corporate sponsor affiliations and recently completed facility projects. We are grateful for your generosity, enthusiasm and support of Hofstra Athletics, and we particularly enjoy that you can share in the achievements and accomplishments of our athletics program.

COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION SILVER ANNIVERSARY TEAM

The Colonial Athletic Association celebrated its 25th year of existence in 2009-10 and, as part of a yearlong celebration, selected silver anniversary teams in each of its sports. Each team consisted of the top 25 individuals in each championship sport. In addition, the CAA also announced its Silver Stars, recognizing 25 student-athletes, coaches and administrators that have achieved excellence and have made a significant impact on the league. Hofstra, which has competed in the CAA for nine years, was well represented on the silver anniversary teams with 34 selections and also placed two student-athletes on the Silver Stars list.

Shuart Stadium Building l Is available for use by all of Hofstra’s student-athletes and has a capacity of nearly 150 l Has 12 computer workstations, three laser printers, two private conference rooms that can be utilized for tutorial assistance, a group study area, 40 individual workstations and a full-time University staff of three to assist Hofstra’s student-athletes l The entire facility is also equipped with wireless internet access

Bill Edwards’ Coaching Accolades

On December 11, 2009, Hofstra Softball Coach Bill Edwards was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame at the organization’s, annual banquet in Nashville, Tennessee.

In 21 seasons at Hofstra, Edwards has compiled 766 victories and has made 12 NCAA Tournament appearances. He has also coached four NFCA All-Americans, 36 Former assistant coaches Bella Totino, Lisa Ciavardini and All-Region selections and five Academic All- Caryl Drohan joined current assistants Larissa Anderson and Ryan Realmuto to congratulate Coach Edwards Americans.

During the 2009-10 academic year, Hofstra student-athletes participated in a variety of community service initiatives. Hofstra Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) coordinated many of the projects, while others were done on a teamby-team basis. Hofstra Athletics and the Hofstra Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised nearly $40,000 in 2009-10 for the HEADstrong Foundation. The women’s lacrosse team hosted the inaugural Nick Colleluori Women’s Lacrosse Classic in September 2009, which raised $32,000 for the foundation. SAAC then sponsored the second annual HEADstrong Youth Lacrosse Tournament and a Family Fun Day in conjunction HEADstrong Foundation items were sold at a booth outside with the men’s lacrosse game against Towson and raised $8,000. of the stadium In addition, the men’s lacrosse team has had the privilege each year to play in the Nick Colleluori Lacrosse Classic played at Nick’s high school in Ridley, PA. This tournament finished its third successful classic this past October, resulting in more than $95,000 being donated to Leukemia and Lymphoma Research.

Hofstra Athletics and Let ALL The Children Play organization partnered together to present a Summer Sports Clinic on August 22, 2010. The clinic’s goal was to promote “INCLUSION through Sports and Play.” The clinics were run by Hofstra Men’s and Women’s Soccer as well Hofstra Men’s and Women’s Basketball team members and coaches.

Let ALL The Children Play is an organization that builds accessible playgrounds and inclusive programs that allow children with disabilities to play side by side with their able bodied peers. The organization will dedicate a brick to Hofstra Athletics in a new playground being constructed at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, NY.

PRIDE CLUB HIGHLIGHTS

l Increased capital gifts by 65% from the 2009-10 Pride Club year l Three consecutive years of raising more than $1 million, the highest three successive years in Pride Club history l E. David Woycik became the third president in the history of the organization l The Former Athlete Participation Challenge encouraged former Hofstra student-athletes to support current Hofstra student-athletes by joining the Pride Club. The sport with the highest percentage of participation received $10,000 towards their program. The women’s soccer team captured first place, having 77% of their former athletes make a gift to support the program. l Posted a 31% increase in the number of student-athletes that contributed from 2009 to 2010 l Total funds raised from former student-athletes 2009: $199,593 2010: $561,684

Corporate partnership Hofstra Athletics is committed to establishing relationships and developing partnerships with national and regional corporations. Revenue generated through corporate sponsorships augment the resources for department-wide programs and initiatives. Â The Pride Corporate Sponsorship Program enjoyed another successful year in 2009-10 with corporate sponsorship contracted revenue increasing for the fourth consecutive year.

STUDENTATHLETE AWARDS BANQUET

The annual Pride Student-Athlete Awards Banquet was held May 4 at David S. Mack Hall. The event celebrated the accomplishments of the 2009-10 season and honored the senior student-athletes on each team. Among the top award winners were Corrine Gandolfi, who earned the Dr. Nathalie J. Smith Award as the top female student-athlete, while Charles Jenkins took home the “Howdy” Myers Male Athlete of the Year award. John Kenny was the recipient of the Dr. James M. Shuart Male Scholar-Athlete Award, and Michele DePasquale and Stephanie Rice shared the Dr. Sylvia J. Giallombardo Female Scholar-Athlete Award. In addition, Miklos Szabo served as the senior speaker, and Sam Brigham and Ray McDonough were selected as the recipients of the Nick Colleluori Unsung Hero Award. Linda Wing Caruso and Gerard O’Connor were chosen to receive the Hofstra Pride Club Distinguished Service Award.

The 14th Annual Hofstra University Gala, honoring Joseph G. Shapiro ’54, was held May 6, 2010 at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The Gala serves as Hofstra’s premier fundraising event, honors outstanding members of our community and provides much needed scholarship funds for University students.
