Hosted the final Presidential Debate of the 2008 campaign on October 15. The debate, which was televised world-wide from the Mack Sports Complex, was moderated by CBS News Correspondent Bob Schieffer.
Located close to the global business capital of New York City, the Frank G. Zarb School for Business will help you find your edge in business. The school is ranked among the top 75 M.B.A programs by Forbes magazine and features the Martin B. Greenburg Trading Room in C.V. Starr Hall. CNN Anchor Anderson Cooper visited Hofstra as part of the “Define ’09: New Challenges, New Solutions,” a year-long series of programs designed to examine the new presidential administration, its policies and initiatives, the challenges we currently face and ways of addressing our country’s most pressing issues. Cooper discussed “A 360-Degree Look at World Events” during his appearance at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse and also spoke privately to a group of students in a forum at Hofstra Hall. In 2007 Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz and the North Shore-LIJ Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Dowling joined today to announce a unique and historic agreement to plan the establishment of a new medical school on Hofstra’s campus. Hofstra University School of Medicine, which hopes to admit its first class in 2011, is currently pursuing preliminary accreditation with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and requisite New York State approval.

Head Baseball Coach Patrick Anderson
P
atrick Anderson is in his second season as head baseball coach at Hofstra University. Anderson was named the 13th coach in the program’s 71-year history on August 11, 2008. In his first season Anderson coached his team to an 1132 record, but saw Mark Stuckless blossom under his tutelage as the senior earned Colonial Athletic Association first team accolades and was the CAA Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year after flirting with a .400 batting average and led the Pride in batting (.392), hits (69), runs (43), doubles (11), triples (4) and home runs (5). Anderson, who served as an assistant coach at Hofstra for three seasons from 1998 to 2001, spent eight seasons as a minor league hitting and catching instructor with the Kansas City Royals Professional Baseball Club before returning to Hempstead. Anderson served as a roving instructor at various levels of the organization - from rookie ball to Kansas City’s Triple-A affiliate - working with high-level prospects that Kansas City touted as potential major league players. During his tenure with the Royals, Anderson worked with many future major leaguer’s including Mike Sweeney, Gregg Zaun and Donnie Murphy.

“Patrick Anderson has extensive baseball experience at both the collegiate and professional levels,” said Hofstra Director of Athletics Jack Hayes. “We are excited that he will be leading the Hofstra Baseball program.” “I am excited to have the opportunity to take over a program that I am quite familiar with,” said Anderson. “Coming home and being able to coach at a school like Hofstra means a great deal to me. I am ecstatic to be a part of the Hofstra family once again.” His work for the Royals also saw him serve as hitting coach for the Gulf Coast Royals (Rookie League) in 2001, the Class A Burlington (IA) Bee’s from 2002 to 2006, the Idaho Falls Chukars (Advanced Rookie League) in 2007 and the rookie affiliate Burlington (NC) Royals in 2008. Anderson began his coaching career in 1996 at Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania, serving as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. After leaving Gannon in 1997 he began coaching at The Baseball Factory, an organization that evaluates and showcases potential collegiate and professional players, in Ellicott City, Maryland. Anderson began his first Hofstra tenure in the fall of 1998, serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under Head Coach Reginald Jackson. In 2000 Anderson served as hitting coach for the Orleans Cardinals of the prestigious Cape Cod Collegiate Summer League, building individual project plans for each player. In his one season with the Cardinals, Anderson coached future Arizona Diamondback Chad Tracy.

An individual instructor for seven years, Anderson has also worked for the Long Island Astros organization, serving as their Winter Fundamental Baseball Camp Director from 2003 to 2008. He also is a volunteer coach and coordinator for the Big Brothers/Challenger Baseball League. Anderson’s experience is not only limited to coaching as he played professionally in the late 1990s for two independent league teams (Chillicothe Paints and Zanesville Greys) and was an all-star for both organizations. A native of Silver Spring, Maryland, Anderson graduated in 1997 with a degree in physical education and a concentration in sports management from Mars Hill College in North Carolina. He is married to Hofstra Softball Associate Head Coach Larissa Anderson and resides in Levittown, New York.

J
ohn Russo is in his second season as an assistant coach on the Hofstra Baseball staff. Russo, who serves as recruiting coordinator and infield coach as well as the third base coach, joined the Pride in 2008 after spending the previous five summers as the manager of the Vermont Mountaineers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, leading the team to back-to-back NECBL championships in 2006 and 2007. During his tenure with the Mountaineers, Russo posted a 137-99 record and was the 2005 NECBL Manager of the Year. He has coached more than 55 players who were selected in the MLB Draft, including Christian Friedrich (2008 first round pick by the Colorado Rockies) and A.J. Pollock (2009 first round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks). From 2001 to 2005, Russo served as assistant coach at Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. In his role as infield coach, St. Joseph’s led its conference in fielding and ranked in the
top 10 nationally three times during his four seasons. Russo also monitored the academic progress of his team, which compiled an overall GPA of 3.1 during his tenure. Russo began his career in 1998 as hitting coach at the University of West Alabama, helping the team set nine individual and team batting records in his three seasons. A 2000 graduate of West Alabama with a degree in secondary education and a concentration in physical education, Russo had been a teacher and athletic director in the Millburn School District in Wadsworth, Illinois, for the past three years. K
ames Lally is in his first season as an assistant coach on the Hofstra Baseball staff. Lally, who will serve as the Pride’s pitching coach, spent the 2008-09 academic year at Archbishop Molloy High School in Briarwood, New York.
elly Haynes, a 1996 graduate of LenoirRhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina, is in his first season as an assistant coach for the Hofstra University Baseball team. Haynes, who will work with the Pride’s outfield, assist with the hitters and serve as the first base coach, brings eight years of collegiate experience to the Hofstra dugout.
At Molloy, Lally served as an assistant baseball and basketball coach in addition to his duties as a teacher’s aide. A 2007 graduate of St. John’s University, Lally pitched three seasons for the Red Storm, making 59 relief appearances from 2005 to 2007. He compiled an 0-1 record, six saves and a 3.50 ERA during his collegiate career and was part of two NCAA Tournament teams. He was also a three-time Big East Conference Academic All-Star. Active on the camp circuit, Lally has served as an instructor at both the Jack Curran Baseball/Basketball Camp and the Ed Blankmeyer Baseball Camp. Lally, who resides in Floral Park, New York, earned a degree in administrative studies and a master’s in secondary education with a concentration in social studies.
Haynes coached at his alma mater for eight seasons (1997-03, 2007). During his tenure, he served as a recruiting coordinator, infield coach, and assisted with hitters. Haynes helped the school win conference tournament championships in 2000 and 2001. He also was part of a staff that led Lenoir-Rhyne to school records for wins in four different seasons, including the current mark of 35 wins in 2007. Lenoir-Rhyne appeared in the NCAA Division II South Regional in 2001, and also finished in the Collegiate Baseball Top 25 that season. Haynes coached 22 all-conference performers, five AllSouth Region selections and two conference rookies of the year during his time with the Bears. Haynes, who played two seasons at Brevard College from 1992 to 1993, was named Offensive Most Valuable Player at LenoirRhyne in 1995, and was named to the South Atlantic Conference All-Tournament Team in 1996. Monaghan could also pitch in clutch situations at the start. The Nassau Community College transfer will try and use his breaking pitches to induce groundball outs, especially at Hofstra’s cozy home ballpark.
Entering his second season, Head Coach Patrick Anderson thinks his first recruiting class could help Hofstra improve its win-loss record. The Pride returns two of their five .300 hitters in Matt Prokopowicz and Scott A’Hara while also retaining closer Jeff Guthridge and ace Rob Kumbatovic, who both tied for a team-best four wins.
Anderson said the rest of the staff will be determined based on performance. Senior Ryan Radke is back after sitting out as a medical redshirt in 2009. Radke brings a physical presence as a 6-5 righty. Freshman Drew Liebert is the same size as Radke and will look to turn his physical tools into quality efforts coming from Baltimore. Hempstead-native Greg Lettini will try and parlay his success as a groundball pitcher into a role with his hometown team as a freshman.
he Hofstra Baseball team will take on a younger look this season with 16 freshmen and six transfer players competing for positions all over the diamond. Just nine players return from last season’s squad that finished 11-32.
A new-look Hofstra team will try and help reverse last season’s 6-18 conference record in order to compete for a spot in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship. After watching his fresh-faced team compete in fall exhibition games, Anderson said the team’s skill and depth should be improved from his first campaign. “I want our mentality to be aggressive,” Anderson said. “We lost the last four innings in a lot of games last season. We want to create a positive; energetic atmosphere and have everyone compete for all nine innings.” Here is a position-by-position look at the 2010 Pride: PITCHING
Kumbatovic is the only expected returnee to the front-end of the rotation. Freshmen Cody Normand and Jared Rogers are slated to start the season as Hofstra’s other weekend starters. Kumbatovic posted a 4-8 record in tossing a team-high 75 2/3 innings as a junior. He led the rotation in ERA for a second straight season and enters his senior year having thrown the Pride’s only complete game in 2009. Both Rogers and Normand are six foot right-handed control pitchers who are looking to build speed on their mid-80 mile per hour fastballs. Fellow freshman Joe Burg could also crack the starting rotation. Anderson said he was impressed by the 5-10 left-handers’ changeup. Burg is set to start the season as a swingman and could also find work in long relief situations in addition to being a midweek starter. First-year right-hander David D’Errico could also fill the role of midweek-starter/ reliever coming out of North Kingstown High School. Junior Jeff Guthridge won the open competition in the fall to be the Opening Day closer. Guthridge moved from position player to pitcher last season and emerged as the closer by mid-season. The side-arming righty saved all three of Hofstra’s game and registered a staff-best 4.38 ERA. All three of those saves were multiple-inning outings as Guthridge struck out 30 batters in 39 innings, going 4-2 in 21 appearances out of the bullpen. Freshman important John Krause could help alleviate the pressure for Guthridge. The 6-4 right-hander is set to be the primary set-up man. Anderson said Krause also utilizes a Jeff Guthridge sidearm and three-quarters motion, forcing opponents to contend with a variety of arm slots late in games. Junior Sean
2010 baseBALL
A’Hara also projects as an outfielder, though the left-hander performed double-duty last season as well. The junior is expected to pitch as well this season as a secondary bullpen option. Junior Kevin Rigopoulos made 18 appearances last year and Anderson said the righty’s fastball has been consistently clocked in the 90 mph range, giving the Pride a power arm out of the bullpen as well as possible spot starter. Long Island-based freshmen righties Andrew Barbarino and Gregg Sarra could also make an impact depending on their maturation to the college game. CATCHER
Kevin Flynn will look to fortify Hofstra’s backstop depth, winning the starting job in the fall after transferring from the County College of Morris. The junior right-handed hitter will be backed up by senior Elliot Hagburg, who was the Pride’s primary catcher in 2009. Hagburg will likely relieve Flynn at times during the team’s three scheduled doubleheaders after the senior started 33 of his 38 games last season. Hagburg can also provide a pinch-hitting option after batting .280 with two home runs and 13 RBIs in 107 at-bats. East Carolina transfer and sophomore Matt Hancock led Hofstra in hitting during the fall and could see time behind the plate in addition to firstbase duties. Freshman Michael Beers could also make a case for playing time at catcher.
Elliot Hagburg
INFIELD
Matt Prokopowicz will anchor a revamped infield that graduated three seniors from the 2009 squad. Prokopowicz is expected to switch from third base to second base after leading the Pride with 30 RBIs. The Massapequa native hit three home runs and batted.344 in 39 games, including 38 starts along with a .477 slugging percentage and a .416 on-base percentage. Those run-producing numbers could be even more valuable from a middle infield spot compared to the hot corner. After NCAA rules forced junior Mike Walraven to sit out last season after transferring from Iona, the switch-hitting infielder is on track to be the Opening Day third baseman. Anderson, who said Prokopowicz could bat second or third, also envisions Walraven batting in the top spot of the order.
9
2010 Outlook Freshman Matt Ford is expected to hold down the starting shortstop position and add depth at the bottom of the order. Anderson said Ford committed just one error in fall exhibition games and showed good range and an above-average arm. Hitting lower in the order could also mean more fastballs for the lefthanded hitting Lansing, New Matt Prokopowicz York native. Fellow freshman Jared Hammer will be charged with winning the everyday first baseman spot. Hammer has shown good defensive skills early and could compete for time with transfer player Ethan Paquette. Matt Watkins, a freshman from San Carlos, California, will start the season as the backup third baseman while also being able to fill other positions on the diamond. Hancock could also move from catcher to first base to add power. E.J. Smith provides a veteran presence for a young infield corps, as the junior transfer from Delaware can fill a utility role and possibly hit his way to a starting job. Freshman Darrin Dawber could also fill the role of super-sub and is set to fill in at shortstop, second base and third base after a successful pitching and hitting career at nearby St. Anthony’s High School. Smithtown East High School standout Peter Magistrale is in his first season and could see time in both the infield and outfield. “Development is the biggest thing for us,” Anderson said. “We’re excited to see the young players just get out there and get better.” OUTFIELD
The outfield will also feature some new faces. Senior John Kenny is one of the few holdovers and will switch from left to centerfield and hit leadoff. Kenny was 16-21 in stolen base attempts in logging a .405 on-base percentage, giving Hofstra a chance to start rallies at the top of the lineup. Kenny also recorded five outfield assists against two errors last season, providing Hofstra with a strong defensive presence. “He’s our best athlete tools-wise to hit in the John Kenny leadoff spot,” Anderson said. Paquette will take over in right field after transferring from the nowdefunct Vermont baseball program. Paquette, a senior, adds a power threat with his 6-3, 220-pound size. He drilled eight home runs with 46 RBIs in just 56 games for the Catamounts last year. Anderson said he expects him to be a middle-of-theorder force. A’Hara will have the chance to win the starting leftfield job after serving primarily as a fourth outfielder, pinch

hitter and designated hitter in 2009. The junior gives Hofstra a left-handed hitting option for the bottom of the order. A’Hara hit .373 with eight RBIs in only 67 at-bats and posted an impressive .455 on-base percentage and a whopping .463 slugging percentage, scoring 11 runs in 21 games. Anderson said the options in the outfield will materialize as the younger players develop a comfort zone. Smith has been working on his defense in the offseason and is a project who could eventually emerge as a dependable corner outfield option.
Jordan Bredehoeft, a left-handed freshman bat, can play all three outfield positions and is primed to fill a niche as a defensive replacement who could also receive starts to keep the projected starters fresh. SCHEDULE
Hofstra will again undertake a challenging non-conference slate, including a season-opening three-game series against Troy University in Alabama starting with an Opening Day tilt Feb. 19. For a second straight season, Hofstra will travel to Dick Howser Stadium to play Florida State. The Seminoles qualified for the national tournament last year and are two years removed from the College World Series. Penn State, West Virginia, Maryland, Fairfield, Manhattan and Stony Brook help comprise the non-conference slate. The Pride will play 12 straight road games before the home opener against Fairfield March 12. Hofstra’s non-conference opponents finished a combined 355-322-2 last season for a .524 winning percentage. “With regards to our non-conference schedule, we want our young players to be challenged as much as possible before getting into CAA action,” Anderson said. A-three day round robin against Temple, Villanova and St. Joseph’s will mark Hofstra’s only in-season tournament this year as part of the Villanova Bash March 12-14. Hofstra opens CAA play with a threegame series at Northeastern April 2-4. The Pride’s longest home stand is a seven-game stretch featuring conference series versus VCU and William and Mary sandwiched around a game versus local-rival Stony Brook March 21. The schedule’s conference portion includes roads series against Georgia State, Towson and Delaware and a home set against VCU. Hofstra concludes the regular season with six straight home games encompassing three-game series against James Madison and Old Dominion. “Our expectations in the CAA are simple: to battle and compete every time a ball is thrown in the air,” Anderson said.

Hofstra Director of Athletics Jack Hayes
J
ack Hayes is in his sixth year as director of athletics at Hofstra University in 2009-10. Hayes was appointed by Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz as the University’s director of athletics on October 4, 2004. Hayes came to Hofstra after serving as an associate director of athletics at the University of Connecticut for three years. Hayes, the eighth director of athletics at Hofstra, leads a department that includes 17 Division I teams, 90 coaches and administrative staff members and 400 student-athletes.
recent renovations include locker rooms, the wrestling room, athletic training rooms in Margiotta Hall and the Physical Fitness Center, the basketball media room in the Mack Sports Complex and a press box at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium. In 2006 Hayes reintroduced the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame after more than a 50-year absence, inducting four classes since that time. He also led an effort to retire the uniform numbers of prominent Hofstra student-athletes with 20 jersey retirement ceremonies held during the 2008-09 academic year.
Hayes’ proven expertise in enhancing academic and athletic success of student-athletes, strategic planning, fund-raising, marketing, university relations, facility enhancement, budgetary management, and NCAA compliance complements Hofstra University’s athletic department in its quest to further enhance its athletic program, and assist Hofstra’s studentathletes both on and off the field. The Hofstra Athletic program has flourished under Hayes’ leadership, winning 18 CAA Championships and making 24 postseason appearances since the 2004-05 academic year. In 2008-09 the Pride wrestling team won the CAA Championship for an eighth consecutive year, while the men’s lacrosse program advanced to the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection. In addition, Hofstra hosted the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals in 2009, which saw nearly 12,000 people fill James M. Shuart Stadium for the event. Hayes has placed a significant emphasis on fund-raising during his tenure. Pride Club membership reached all-time highs, both in terms of the number of contributors and funds raised as the organization topped the $1 million mark in each of the last two years. Resources generated through fund-raising efforts have been used to enhance programs and facilities available to student-athletes. Recent initiatives include the construction of Hofstra’s new field hockey stadium, as well as the replacement of the artificial turf in Shuart Stadium. Other
Active on a national level, Hayes served on the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Committee from September 2006 to September 2008. Hayes came to Hofstra with more than 14 years of athletic administration experience, including management positions at four Division I institutions – Connecticut, Fordham, St. John’s and Fairfield. Hayes received a master’s degree in education in 1992 with a concentration in sport management from the University of Connecticut. He holds a bachelor’s degree (1989) from Providence College, where he was a member of Providence’s lacrosse team. He was also awarded a certificate of completion in 2001 from the Sports Management Institute, Consortium of the Universities of Michigan and Texas. A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Hayes graduated from the Providence Country Day School where he lettered in football, basketball and lacrosse. He was inducted, as a member of his high school basketball team, into the Providence Country Day Athletic Hall of Fame in October 2004. Hayes resides in East Northport, New York, with his wife Bridget, daughter Katie (7), and sons Matt (4) and Tommy (1).

Hofstra Heritage The Symbols of Hofstra University The Shield Logo
In 2005 Hofstra introduced a new logo as part of a Universitywide reimaging. Both the University’s logo as well as the Pride logo were designed by advertising agency Powell New York, a full-service branding and marketing agency, noted as one of the ten firms to watch in 2005 in Advertising Age. The new University logo features an “H” within a shield design. Hofstra University has always been known for both a tradition of academic excellence and a willingness to evolve to meet the needs of students and the greater society. This shield represents the University’s commitment to our heritage and a tradition of academic excellence, while the dynamic representation of the H within the shield embodies the evolutionary, changing nature of the University. Hofstra University has both honored its traditions and heritage while embracing changing disciplines, using new technology and remaining relevant to scholarly pursuits and the demands of industry.
The Seal
The Hofstra seal was designed from the royal Dutch emblem by art instructor Constant Van de Wall. The seal is modeled on the coat of arms of the House of Orange-Nassau. The round seal includes the coat of arms, flanked by lions on either side. A lion also stands in the center of the coat of arms, holding a sword in its right claw and a bundle of seven arrows, which represent the seven provinces of Holland, in its left. The seal also carries the motto of the House of Orange-Nassau in Old French: “Je maintiendray” (I stand steadfast). In 1988 one of the two lions on the seal was officially replaced with a lioness. The Hofstra seal is still in use today, though not as a logo. The seal will be affixed to formal documents, and used for official purposes such as commencement, convocations, and official University functions.

The Pride
Hofstra’s athletic teams are officially known as the Pride, providing our teams with a strong, consistent image that resonates with the Hofstra community. The Hofstra Athletics logo consists of a graphic mark of a male and female lion in powerful, synchronized motion with the word mark of the Hofstra Pride or the specific sports team. The Hofstra Pride refers to a pack of lions, male and female, which work together towards a common goal and symbolize determination and strength. The Pride conveys both the teamwork and togetherness that is a trait of lions living in prides, who have a close bond and work together for the good of the entire group. The teamwork evident in prides is a trait of Hofstra’s studentathletes, who support each other in furtherance of a common goal, while working tirelessly to represent their teams and, in turn, the University. Lions also possess speed, tenacity, and agility, and are relentless in their pursuit of a goal, which are traits our studentathletes demonstrate both on and off the field. The first consistent use of the word “Pride” relating to athletics was in 1989 when the University’s athletic booster club was founded and called itself The Pride Club, which at the time simply referred to the pride that alumni and fans had for our teams. The Pride identity has progressed over the past decade in a more specific fashion than just the expression of a feeling. After one lion on the Hofstra seal was changed into a lioness to symbolize gender equity, the University mascots -- Kate and Willie Pride, a lioness and lion – were introduced.

Hofstra Heritage Hofstra’s Dutch Heritage Ties to Dutch heritage and the Netherlands began with William S. Hofstra, after whom the school is named and on whose property the University was started. William Hofstra died in 1932 and when his wife, Kate, died 16 months later, her will provided that their house, 15-acre estate, and bulk of her inheritance were to be used for a “public, charitable, benevolent, or scientific purpose” as a memorial to her husband. The idea for a college came from Truesdel Peck Calkins, former Hempstead superintendent of schools, who was then with New York University. He suggested that NYU might offer extension courses on the Hofstra property. Hofstra opened in September 1935, as a two-year extension branch of NYU; its official name was “Nassau College – Hofstra Memorial of New York University at Hempstead, Long Island.” When the doors opened, the sole building on campus was Hofstra’s mansion, which he had affectionately named the Netherlands after his homeland, and all classes were held there. The mansion, which houses administrative offices, is now the center of Hofstra’s 240-acre campus, and has been renamed Hofstra Hall.

Academic Support
H
ofstra University is committed to the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. The University views participation in intercollegiate athletics as benefiting the student-athlete in an educationally enhancing experience beyond any other opportunity available. Hofstra also realizes the time commitment made by student-athletes and has committed the facilities and resources to support all students. The University Tutorial Program (UTP) provides free tutoring in every subject area to any Hofstra student. Students are able to obtain up to 1 1/2 hours of individual tutorial assistance per week for each subject. They are also able to utilize the various help labs on campus, which specialize in providing assistance in writing, business and QM, and biology and chemistry. In addition to this service, studentathletes are assigned an academic advisor who helps address the various needs of student‑athletes. The academic advisor emphasizes four areas in their efforts to ensure the academic success of Hofstra’s student-athletes. Area one is academic counseling. Services are provided in the areas of academic planning, career planning, personal counseling, and campus and community referrals. The counselor also meets with prospective student‑athletes, at the coach’s request, to share the many benefits of a Hofstra University education. Area two is academic advising. In an effort to ease the demand on the Office of Advisement, the academic advisor also advises first‑year and undecided student‑athletes.
2010 baseBALL
Area three is academic monitoring. The UTP counselor monitors the academic progress of student‑athletes to ensure compliance with Hofstra University, NCAA and conference regulations. The counselor’s regular communication with the faculty and coaches provide an opportunity for early intervention should academic difficulties arise. Area four is study halls. The University Tutorial Program provides all athletic study halls with tutors in various subjects and assesses the needs of individual student‑athletes to provide the most effective study environment. The assessment tool administered by the UTP is also used to provide various enrichment seminars for the student‑athletes such as time management, writing skills, campus resources, and surviving the college transition. In the fall of 1999 a computer lab opened on the second floor of Margiotta Hall. Funded in part by proceeds from the Joe Gardi Golf Open, the state-of-the-art computer lab and learning center features a projection system and 18 computer workstations, which are connected to the University network for easy research access to the Internet. The room was refurbished in 2005 with new furniture and computers. In addition to the Margiotta Hall computer lab, a new study area was constructed in 2006, located in the Physical Fitness Center, which features numerous computer workstations and office space for University academic advisement personnel.

Sports Medicine/Athletic Training
T
hrough a comprehensive athletic training program, Hofstra University student-athletes are provided excellent health care during their attendance at the University. A coordinated effort between the University Health and Wellness Center, the Athletic Department and outside health care providers ensures every student-athlete the best medical attention possible. University student-athletes have direct access to a myriad of health care services. Managing the coverage of every practice and competition event is Hofstra University’s athletic training staff, which is led by seventh-year Head Athletic Trainer Evan Malings and features eight full-time athletic trainers and numerous student athletic trainers. The athletic trainers provide injury management, rehabilitation and treatment to the entire Athletic program. Utilizing three state-of-the-art athletic training rooms, these professionals work tirelessly to ensure the safe participation of Hofstra’s student-athletes and to return injured athletes to play quickly and safely. Supporting the athletic trainers is team physician Dr. Michael Yorio. Dr. Yorio, a physician with Pro Health Care, Inc. in Lake Success, New York, is in his first year on Hofstra’s medical team. Yorio is an internist with specialized training in sports medicine. He earned his undergraduate degree at Villanova University, and received his medical degree from the SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse. Yorio previously served as a sports medicine fellow with the University of Maryland Orthopedics. Prior to that, he was a resident physician in internal medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Yorio was named the Director of Player Medical Services for the 2008 U.S. Open Tennis Tournament in Flushing, New York, and is on the medical staff for the New York Islanders. He also worked as a team physician for the University of Maryland from 2003 to 2005. Hofstra University sponsors a fully accredited, highly competitive undergraduate degree program for athletic training majors, in which Hofstra student athletic trainers participate in all aspects of the health care system.

Strength and Conditioning
T
he main focus of the strength and conditioning program is to give each student-athlete an opportunity to perform at the highest level throughout his or her collegiate career. To achieve this, athletes need to prepare both in the physical and mental aspects of their sport. The physical aspect is accomplished through strength training, conditioning, flexibility, explosiveness, nutrition, agility drills and speed training. These aspects of strength and conditioning not only help the athletes perform at their highest level, but also help through preventing injuries, which in return will allow the athletes to remain on the competitive playing field. The mental aspects of strength and conditioning are accomplished through accountability, hard work, focus and determination. Each of these aspects will be focused on through an individualized yearround program.

Long Island/New York City About Long Island… Long Island has a rich history as an active, vibrant community, a summer playground, and home to some of New York’s most prominent families. Five distinct regions make up Long Island: • North Shore, otherwise known as the Gold Coast, with dozens of historic sites dating back to colonial days and Gatsby-era mansions. • South Shore, the Island’s spectator sports and entertainment center, with world-famous Jones and Fire Island Beaches, and home to the New York Islanders. • Central Suffolk, with beautiful forests and natural inlets, the world’s largest factory outlet center and a huge water park. • North Fork, with an array of vineyards, waterfront ports and farm stands. • South Fork, widely known as “The Hamptons,” with its pristine beaches and exclusive villages. • You can catch a Hofstra shuttle bus to Jones Beach – a state park with six miles of gorgeous coastline, a boardwalk, swimming pools, golf and outdoor concerts. With everything from museums, historical sites and lighthouses, to sophisticated malls, designer outlets and shopping villages, to wineries and farm stands, to family fun parks, aquariums and zoos, there is plenty to do on Long Island.
About New York City… Hofstra is located only 30 miles from New York City – the capital of culture and finance. You can visit Carnegie Hall, South Street Seaport, Hard Rock Café, Grand Central Station, Central Park, NBC Studios in Rockefeller Center, Little Italy or Chinatown.

Hofstra in the Community The Hofstra Baseball program is extremely active in the Long Island community, lending itself to a variety of charitable and educational causes. The team is actively involved with the Hempstead Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and the Long Island Special Olympics. The team holds clinics to teach the game and to spend time with each group. The Pride also conducted a clinic with the Massapequa Coast Little League. Through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, the team “adopted” Colin Canaty, a 4-year old boy who is a brain cancer survivor. The team spends time playing games with Colin and his family. The team has also raised money for and participated in the American Cancer Society’s Walk for a Cure at Jones Beach, as well as lending its support to Long Island Cares food drives.

UNIVERSITY FIELD
T
he Pride call University Field, located on Hofstra’s North Campus, their home. University Field is centrally located between two of the most frequented sites on campus, the Hofstra Recreation Center and the Mack Sports Complex. It is also just 25 yards from the Colonial Square residential complex. University Field has undergone major renovations in recent years. In 2010 new bleacher seating and a press box will be installed in the area behind home plate. The infield was skinned and a new drainage system was installed. This was followed by the installation of “Competition Turf by Edel Grass. The artificial grass surface, which is similar to what is used at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was installed by Landtek of Amityville, New York. The new surface gives the Pride greater flexibility in playing during inclement weather and will also allow for greater use during the summer months. Other renovations included leveling the berm that was located behind the backstop and moving the backstop back 10 feet. New fences were installed along the right field and left field lines, and in 2006 the field received a new scoreboard in right centerfield. In 2003 the existing dugouts were replaced with sunken dugouts, measuring 70 feet in length, with protective fencing. During the summer of 2004, the outfield warning track was resurfaced with crushed gravel for better playability and drainage. University Field has dimensions of 331 feet down the left field line, 380 to center field and 340 down the right field line.

The Colonial Athletic Association
T
he Colonial Athletic Association celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2009-10 with memories of a proud and storied past and visions of an exciting future.
Regarded as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences, the CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 20 NCAA postgraduate scholars. In 2008-09, the CAA had more than 1,700 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes receive the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference ranked in the top 10 in the nation in 12 of its 23 sports in the latest APR report released by the NCAA. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA currently sponsors 23 sports with the addition of a 12-team football league in 2007 and women’s rowing in 2009. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 2008-09, 28 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 45 studentathletes received All-America honors. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with a league-record five teams advancing to postseason play in 2008-09. Conference champion VCU made its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last six years, while George Mason reached the postseason for the seventh time in a decade in the NIT. Old Dominion, making its fifth straight postseason trip, captured the inaugural CIT championship, while James Madison made the CIT semifinals. Northeastern reached the quarterfinals of the CBI. In 2006, George Mason captured the nation’s imagination by becoming the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach the Final Four, knocking off powerhouses Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the way. The Patriots were ranked No. 8 in the final ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll, which was the highest ever for a CAA team. The CAA has had at least three women’s basketball teams participate in post-season play for the past four seasons. Drexel captured its first CAA championship in 2009 and was joined in the NCAA Tournament by VCU, giving the league multiple teams in the Big Dance for the second time in three years. James Madison earned a post-season berth for the fourth year in a row in the WNIT. Perennial power Old Dominion, which has won three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) and was national runner-up in 1997, claimed an NCAA-record 17 straight CAA titles before seeing its incredible streak come to an end last year.
2010 baseBALL
The conference also excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. Three women’s soccer teams have reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the past two seasons and at least one men’s soccer team has advanced to the final 16 of the NCAA Championship in five of the last seven years. In men’s cross country, William & Mary placed 16th nationally as a team in 2008 and Georgia State’s Mark Steeds earned All-America status after a 12th-place individual effort. On the mat, ODU’s Ryan Williams was one of three wrestling All-Americans after finishing as the national runner-up at 141 pounds. The CAA has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship in nine of the last 12 years and has had 12 or more players selected in the last seven Major League Baseball drafts. The conference also boasts numerous All-Americans in tennis, golf, track and field and swimming and diving. CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs already established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, academic resource centers and computer labs. In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions were awarded academia’s most coveted distinction – the Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University, received the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of economics and law at George Mason University, shared the Nobel Prize in economic sciences. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005. Celebrating its 25th Anniversary, the CAA takes great pride in producing student-athletes who stand out on the playing field and in the classroom.
