Hosted the final Presidential Debate of the 2008 campaign on October 15. The debate, which was televised world-wide from the Mack Sports Complex, was moderated by CBS News Correspondent Bob Schieffer.

Located close to the global business capital of New York City, the Frank G. Zarb School for Business will help you find your edge in business. The school is ranked among the top 75 M.B.A programs by Forbes magazine and features the Martin B. Greenburg Trading Room in C.V. Starr Hall. CNN Anchor Anderson Cooper visited Hofstra as part of the “Define ’09: New Challenges, New Solutions,” a year-long series of programs designed to examine the new presidential administration, its policies and initiatives, the challenges we currently face and ways of addressing our country’s most pressing issues. Cooper discussed “A 360-Degree Look at World Events” during his appearance at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse and also spoke privately to a group of students in a forum at Hofstra Hall. In 2007 Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz and the North Shore-LIJ Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Dowling joined today to announce a unique and historic agreement to plan the establishment of a new medical school on Hofstra’s campus. Hofstra University School of Medicine, which hopes to admit its first class in 2011, is currently pursuing preliminary accreditation with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and requisite New York State approval.

Head Softball Coach Bill edwards

B

ill Edwards, a 2009 inductee into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame, enters his 21st season as the Hofstra University Head Softball Coach in 2010, and has been the architect of a program that has grown from humble beginnings into national prominence. Edwards has led Hofstra to the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament in the 2004, 2005 and 2008 seasons, and helped the Pride capture a remarkable 11 straight conference tournament titles from 1998-2008, which is an NCAA Division I record for softball. His career record stands at 721351-3 in 20 seasons, ranking him in the top 25 in NCAA history in career winning percentage. Edwards guided Hofstra to a school record 45 wins in 2008, including two at the NCAA Regionals in Hempstead as it advanced to the regional finals for the third time. The Pride finished with a 45-13 record, while winning the Colonial Athletic Association regular season and postseason championships, earning Edwards the CAA Coach of the Year award. He repeated as the CAA Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading the Pride to a first-place finish in the league standings

while defeating five pitchers who earned All-America honors during their careers. While the last several seasons have been especially noteworthy on a national level, the Hofstra Softball program has also displayed consistent excellence over his 20-year career. Edwards and company have garnered 11 NCAA Tournament appearances during that span, including six in the last seven years. In each of the last 18 seasons under Edwards, the Pride has won either a regular season or a postseason conference title, including 11 straight tournament championships, breaking the previous record of nine straight conference titles set by Massachusetts from 1995-2003. Edwards, who has been a part of 20 straight winning seasons at Hofstra, coached the Pride to a #21 ranking in the final 2004 NCAA Division I Softball Poll, and a #20 ranking in the final 1994 poll. He has also led the Pride to #1 rankings in the Northeast Region Poll in 1993, 1994, 1997 and 2000.

In addition, Edwards has been named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year nine times in his career (1993, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008). His players have earned All-America honors from the NFCA five times, including twice by Crystal Boyd (1993, 1994) and once apiece from Alicia Smith (2000), Lisa Ciavardini (2000) and Amanda Hallaway (2003)

During the 2000 season, Edwards and the Pride set a then-school record with 42 wins, marking the third time that they had reached the 40-win plateau. Hofstra also won their third consecutive America East Championship and earned their second straight automatic bid to NCAA Regionals, where they defeated Louisiana-Lafayette before being eliminated 2-1 by seventh-ranked LSU.

The 45 wins in 2008 broke the previous school record of 43, set in 2005, when Hofstra reached the NCAA Regional finals at Alabama with a 2-1 win over Arizona State. The year before, he led the Pride to the 2004 NCAA Regional finals at Stanford University, where the Pride won four games and fell just one win shy of reaching the Women’s College World Series. In the last seven years, Hofstra has won 12 NCAA Tournament games, including victories over Penn State, Nebraska, Auburn, Stanford and Arizona State,

In 1995, Hofstra’s first season in the North Atlantic Conference, Edwards led the squad to a school-record 41-21 mark, the North Atlantic Conference Championship and a berth in Hofstra’s second NCAA Tournament. For his efforts, Edwards was named the North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year and Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year.

6

Edwards came to Hofstra from Commack High School where he coached softball for nine years. During his tenure at Commack, his teams compiled a 118-61 record and reached the Suffolk County Class A playoffs in seven of those nine years. His 1988 squad captured the Suffolk County championship and the Long Island championship, and finished third in the New York State Tournament. Edwards has also served as head softball coach for the P.S.I. Couriers, an Amateur Softball Association (ASA) summer team. His 1987 team captured the Mid-Atlantic region championship and finished fifth in the national tournament, which marked the first time a Long Island team had competed in the national tournament. The P.S.I. Couriers also finished second in the region in 1986 and third in 1988 and 1989. He is also a past president of the Suffolk County Softball Coaches Association. A teacher in the Commack School District from 1967 through 1999, Edawrds worked and coached at John F. Kennedy Junior High School, Wood Park Elementary School and Commack High School. He served

two stints as freshman football coach at Kennedy Junior High School from 1972 through 1976, and 1979 and 1980, and was also the freshman baseball coach from 1975 through 1980. When he moved on to Commack, Edwards served as offensive coordinator from 1981 through 1983. During those three years, Commack won three league titles, two conference championships and one Suffolk County championship. In 1993 he served as head football coach at Commack. In addition, Edwards also served as head ice hockey coach at Iona College from 1968 through 1979. At Iona, his teams posted a 174-5814 record and captured four Metropolitan Collegiate championships. In 1988 Edwards was inducted into the Iona College Sports Hall of Fame Edwards’ influence has spread far beyond the Hofstra campus, as has been the featured speaker at softball clinics and conventions throughout the United States. Edwards serves as the chairman for the NCAA Division I All-American committee and is the Colonial Athletic Association representative on the NCAA Legislative Committee. He is currently an instructor for the prestigious NFCA Coaches College and has taught softball around the world as an instructor for the International Softball Federation. He has also been published in numerous magazines, periodicals, newspapers and books.

Associate Head Coach Larissa Anderson

L

arissa Anderson is in her ninth year on the coaching staff at Hofstra and her sixth as associate head coach. She has helped the Pride to seven CAA Tournament championships and six NCAA Tournament appearances in her eight seasons on the staff. She has also been part of 12 NCAA Tournament game victories in the last seven years, including four in 2004. Her efforts have resulted in the Hofstra staff being named the MidAtlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) five times (2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008). Anderson works with the Hofstra hitters and ptichers, and handles pitchcalling duties from the dugout. During her eight years, she has helped Hofstra achieve a record of 297-148-1, including a school record 45 victories in 2008. She was instrumental in the development of Kayleigh Lotti, who holds the Hofstra career and single-season strikeout record, and was a three-time CAA Pitcher of the Year. Anderson also coached Callie Osborne to CAA Pitcher of the Year honors in 2004 and 2005. In addition, both Lotti (four times) and Osborne (twice) have been named to the NFCA All-Region team under Anderson’s tutelage. Another pitcher who flourished under Anderson was Adrienne Clark, who developed a reputation as one of the top big-game pitchers in the country during her time with the Pride. Clark, who was not recruited as a pitcher, finished her career with a 5-1 lifetime record in the NCAA Tournament, including three solo shutouts and one combined shutout. Clark had a shutout streak of 31 straight innings as a starter in NCAA Tournament play in the 2003 and 2004 seasons, the longest such streak since Nancy Evans of Arizona had 38 straight shutout innings in 1998. In 2008 the pitching staff of Lotti, Courtney Oliver, Joanna Kralowetz and Sara Michalowski won 45 games, posted a 1.28 earned run average, which is the second lowest mark in program history, and held opponents to a .128 batting average. In 2007 the staff, which included Lotti, Oliver and Kralowetz combined to post 41 victories and a team ERA of 1.86, which was just the second time in six seasons that the team ERA was under 2.00. The staff total of 460 strikeouts bettered the

8

old mark of 343 by 117, as Lotti rang up 319 punch-outs on the year. Anderson’s work with Kralowetz stands out as the sophomore was not recruited to pitch and emerged as Hofstra’s goto reliever, posting an 11-3 record, a 1.78 ERA with 61 strikeouts and four walks in 63 innings pitched. Prior to coming to Hofstra, Anderson served as an assistant coach for two seasons at C.W. Post, where she helped the Pioneers to a combined 75-33 record, including a school record 42 wins during the 2000 season. She assisted in all facets of the program at C.W. Post and was in charge of coaching the pitchers and catchers. Her efforts helped the Pioneers to the 13th best team earned run average in Division II (1.11) in 2001. She was also part of a C.W. Post staff that received the Northeast Region Division II Coaching Staff of the Year award from the NFCA in 2000. Anderson also served one season as an assistant coach at Gannon University in 1998, after being named a regional All-American outfielder in 1997. She graduated from Gannon in 1997 with a bachelor’s of science degree in therapeutic recreation. No stranger to the Hofstra athletic community, Anderson spent the 2000-01 academic year as an administrative assistant to the women’s basketball program in addition to her coaching duties at C.W. Post. Anderson resides in Levittown, New York, with her husband of eight years, Patrick, who is in his second season as head coach of the Hofstra Baseball team.

Assistant Coach ryan realmuto

R

yan Realmuto, a former four-time All-Big 12 catcher at Oklahoma State, is in her fourth season as an assistant softball coach at Hofstra University. In her first three seasons, she was part of a coaching staff that twice (2007, 2008) earned Mid-East Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Realmuto works with the Pride’s catchers and also assists Bill Edwards as hitting instructor. The Hofstra catching contingent recorded just six passed balls and two errors in 2009, while throwing out nearly 33 percent of potential base stealers. In 2008 Hofstra’s catchers allowed just one passed ball and threw out 25 percent of would-be base stealers. Starting catcher Carolann Lubach, who caught all but seven innings on the season, did not have a passed ball and committed just three errors in 388 chances. Under Realmuto’s direction in 2007 Lubach threw out 29 percent of would-be base stealers and recorded just five passed balls in all 388 2/3 innings behind the plate. The Hofstra offense also benefited from Realmuto’s coaching in 2008, posting a .292 average – the highest mark since 1999. The team averaged nearly 4.6 runs per game and had 462 hits, the fourth best total in Pride history. Realmuto joined the Pride already familiar with Hofstra Softball Stadium, after playing for the New York/New Jersey Juggernaut of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league in the summer of 2005, which played their home games at Hofstra. She hit 10 home runs for the Juggernaut, ranking her third in the NPF, while also leading the team with 27 RBIs. The Juggernaut moved to Philadelphia in 2006, where she was the starting catcher for the Force. She also was a member of the NPF’s Texas Thunder in 2004, and earned NPF All-Star status in both 2004 with the Thunder and in 2005 with the Juggernaut. Realmuto played her college softball at Oklahoma State University from 2000 through 2003, earning All-Big 12 accolades in all four seasons. She was a NFCA All-Regional selection as a junior and senior, and was twice chosen to the Big 12’s All-Academic team. She graduated in 2003 with a degree in education.

2010 Outlook

T

he Hofstra Softball team is in a rare position in 2010, as it enters the new season without a conference championship to defend. The Pride set an NCAA Division I record with 11 straight conference titles from 1998-2008 (seven CAA, four America East) before the streak finally ended last spring. It may work out to the benefit of the 2010 team that it can enter the new season without the burden of trying to continue the streak set by its predecessors. The Pride lost six senior starters off of last year’s team, including three-time CAA Pitcher of the Year Kayleigh Lotti, and will have to rely on the contributions of several newcomers and/or first-year starters in order to get back to the winner’s circle. Hofstra will not, however, temper its expectations one bit. The coaching staff believes that its six-member recruiting class might be the most talented that it has ever brought in at one time and should provide immediate help. CAA Player of the Year Michele DePasquale is back at first base to anchor the line-up during her senior season, while junior shortstop Trisha Dreslinski, junior pitcher/third baseman Sara Michalowski and senior outfielder Kris Root will provide experience offensively and defensively. Here is a position-by-position look at the Hofstra Softball team heading into the 2010 season:

Pitcher For the last four years, Kayleigh Lotti was the unquestioned #1 starter who was given the ball in virtually every big game. Lotti graduated in first place on Hofstra’s career list in strikeouts (979) and second in victories (82). This year’s team will have revamped philosophy in the circle, as it begins a new season with four talented pitchers and no clear cut #1.

erin Wade

Junior Sara Michalowski and sophomore Erin Wade both have some experience in the circle, while incoming freshmen Olivia Galati and Nicole Osovski will give the Pride as much pitching depth as it has ever had. Michalowski saw her time in the circle somewhat limited last year, as her role as the starting third baseman (and her spot in the heart of the batting order) took her out of the pitching circle for large portions of the season. She finished with a 2-5 record and a 2.07 ERA, but was victimized by poor run support, as the Pride scored only five runs combined in her five losses. Wade, meanwhile, had an up-and-down freshman season, but her ups showed that she has tremendous potential. She displayed the ability to dominate quality teams when she was on her game, including a 2-1 loss to Illinois in her college debut, when she retired 16 of the last 17 batters she faced. She also threw six innings of one-hit relief to get the win against a talented Fordham team, and looked extremely impressive in a regular season win over James Madison, shutting the Dukes out through the first five innings before giving way to the bullpen in the sixth. Galati comes to Hofstra after a standout career at St. John the Baptist High School on Long Island after leading the Cougars to three New York state championships. As a senior, she helped St. John’s to the state title by pitching the semifinals and finals on the same day, compiling two 3-0 shutout wins, while striking out 32 batters and allowing only four hits. She was also 5-for-6 at the plate combined in the two games, driving in five of her team’s six runs (and scoring the sixth on an error). Osovski also had a strong scholastic career, leading Maine-Endwell High School to a 20-3 record and #1 ranking in the state as senior. She was named a first-team All-New York State selection three times, recorded over 1,000 strikeouts in her career, and threw a perfect game in the 2008 New York state tournament while leading Maine-Endwell to the regional finals. As a senior, she had a 17-2 record and a 0.27 ERA during the regular season. Galati and Osovski are also outstanding hitters, which could allow Hofstra to let its pitchers hit much more frequently this season, while putting one of its fielders in the flex position. Although if the coaching staff can find enough hitting from its other players, it may prefer to let its young hurlers concentrate entirely on their pitching during their rookie seasons.

Catcher Carolann Lubach graduated last year after catching almost every inning for the last four seasons, leaving a big hole in the Pride’s defense. However, the coaching staff was pleased with the development of sophomore Courtney Crews in practice last year and feel that she will be ready to step in and be a strong defensive catcher this spring, due to her soft hands and strong arm. Junior Laura Valentino can also catch, although she had a valuable role last year as a utility player, seeing action at third base, shortstop, left field, right field and designated player. Valentino hit two homers last season, both three-run shots in key conference wins on the road over Drexel and UNC Wilmington.

10

Michele DePasquale

infield Hofstra returns three of its four starting infielders from last year, with a hole at second base left by the graduation of three-time All-CAA selection Casey Fee, but the coaching staff will have plenty of options this season and may move people around. The one position that they know is etched in stone is first base, where senior Michele DePasquale returns for her fourth season as a starter. DePasquale was the CAA Player of the Year last season after batting a team-high .359 (.421 in conference games) with 30 RBI. She’s also outstanding defensively, with only two errors in the last two seasons combined. Junior Trisha Dreslinski and junior Sara Michalowski started last season at shortstop and third base, respectively, and will likely have starting roles again this year. Dreslinski had some highlight reel plays defensively at shortstop, while Michalowski was one of the top clutch hitters in the line-up, batting .285 with 26 RBI. Incoming freshman Becca Bigler and D.J. Slugh, though, will be in the mix for playing time right away. Bigler was an all-region shortstop at Elizabethtown High School in Pennsylvania and has the potential to be a terrific collegiate hitter. Slugh can play any number of positions and is a terrific all-around athlete. Junior Krista Thorn, who played soccer at

2010 SOFTBALL

Trisha Dreslinski

Iona as a freshman, was a defensive replacement for Michalowski when she pitched and did an outstanding job, recording only one error (which came while playing shortstop after Dreslinski was injured). Sophomore transfer Jess Hirschbuhl, who hit .314 at Temple last year, is also a strong candidate to fill the second base opening. Hofstra may tinker with any number of combinations to find the right starting infield this year. Dreslinski has some experience at second base and could slide over if Bigler proves ready to be the everyday shortstop. Bigler could also play second, as could Slugh, Hirschbuhl or Thorn, while Michalowski’s presence at third base may depend on how often she is needed in the pitching circle.

Outfield Hofstra loses two-thirds of its starting outfield in graduated seniors Erika Bernstein and Melissa Hodge. Senior right fielder Kris Root has started in the outfield the last two years and could move over to center field this season. Root, who converted to a slapper role when she arrived at Hofstra, could also take over the leadoff spot in the batting order as she tries to pursue the school’s career stolen base record. Root has 38 in her first three seasons, 17 shy of the mark held by Lisa Wambold.

11

2010 Outlook sara Michalowski

Kris Root

The Pride also has two other seniors Stefanie Feinstein and Christie Novatin returning, who could be ready for full-time starting roles. Either can play in the outfield or fill the designated player role. Feinstein and Novatin both served as pinch-hitting specialists last year, often coming in the game in RBI situations in place of one of the team’s slappers. Novatin hit a pair of homers, including a two-run shot in the eighth inning against Fordham, while Feinstein homered twice as a sophomore in league wins over Georgia State and Delaware. Valentino performed well in the outfield in her five starts there last year and could see more action there this year if the Pride is looking to get more power in the line-up. Sophomore Michelle Lavagnino can also play in the outfield after being used as a pinch-runner last year. The Pride also adds two speedy lefties to its arsenal with incoming freshmen Rachael Senatore and Tessa Ziemba, who were summer ball teammates for the Jersey Intensity Gold. Senatore and Ziemba will help replace the speed left behind by the graduation of Fee and Bernstein. If they don’t see regular action as starters, they will certainly both be valuable in pinch-running and/or late-inning defensive replacement roles.

Hofstra joined with North Shore-LIJ Health System in announcing plans to establish a medical school on the University campus in October 2007. The new school, which is expected to enroll its first students in 2011, pending preliminary accreditation with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and requisite New York State approval, will be the first allopathic (MD) medical school in Nassau County and the first in New York state since 1963.

ofstra University provides a dynamic college experience tailored for engaged and ambitious individuals. Students find their edge at Hofstra, through small classes, a faculty whose primary concern is teaching, cutting edge technology, extensive library resources, internships, and special educational programs that appeal to their interests and abilities. The Hofstra community is driven, dynamic and energetic, helping students find and focus their strengths to prepare them for a successful future. In its relatively short history, Hofstra has established itself as a world-class institution of higher education and cultural enterprise. Each academic year, the Hofstra campus and the programs offered grow and change to meet the demands of our students and our community. Hofstra opened in 1935 as a commuter school with all classes and offices housed in one building. Since those early days, Hofstra has evolved into an international institution with a student body hailing from 51 states and territories, and 73 countries around the world. The beautiful campus is an accredited arboretum with 113 buildings on 240 acres. There are approximately 4,200 students living on campus, and Hofstra offers them and all students an extensive array of academic and social activities. Additionally, Hofstra’s close proximity to Manhattan means that students have easy access to the wondrous cultural, social and career offerings of the city.

In October 2008, the eyes of the world were on Hofstra at the University hosted the final presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. The October 15 debate, moderated by Bob Schieffer, was a transformational moment for the University, highlighting the achievements of our students and faculty and their engagement in the political process. Leading up to the debate, students and the entire community were engaged by the year-long Educate ’08 program, almost 150 lectures, conferences, and events focused on the issues, history and politics of the presidency. Hofstra has followed the Educate ’08 program with Define ’09, a year-long series of programs designed to examine the new presidential administration, its policies and initiatives, the challenges we currently face and ways of addressing our country’s most pressing issues. 2008 also saw Hofstra award its first Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet. The new international award, which recognizes efforts at interfaith dialogue, received 75 nominations for individuals and organizations from around the world. Hofstra’s School of Communication is one of the largest, most advanced non-commercial television facilities in the East. Students take classes and work in Dempster Hall, a sophisticated television

What has remained consistent throughout the years, however, is the sense of community on campus, the eagerness of our students to learn and the commitment of the Hofstra faculty and administration to provide a challenging education that encourages the pursuit of lifelong learning. Hofstra Director of Athletics Jack Hayes

J

ack Hayes is in his sixth year as director of athletics at Hofstra University in 2009-10. Hayes was appointed by Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz as the University’s director of athletics on October 4, 2004. Hayes came to Hofstra after serving as an associate director of athletics at the University of Connecticut for three years.

recent renovations include locker rooms, the wrestling room, athletic training rooms in Margiotta Hall and the Physical Fitness Center, the basketball media room in the Mack Sports Complex and a press box at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium. In 2006 Hayes reintroduced the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame after more than a 50-year absence, inducting four classes since that time. He also led an effort to retire the uniform numbers of prominent Hofstra student-athletes with 20 jersey retirement ceremonies held during the 2008-09 academic year.

Hayes, the eighth director of athletics at Hofstra, leads a department that includes 17 Division I teams, 90 coaches and administrative staff members and 400 student-athletes. Hayes’ proven expertise in enhancing academic and athletic success of student-athletes, strategic planning, fund-raising, marketing, university relations, facility enhancement, budgetary management, and NCAA compliance complements Hofstra University’s athletic department in its quest to further enhance its athletic program, and assist Hofstra’s studentathletes both on and off the field. The Hofstra Athletic program has flourished under Hayes’ leadership, winning 18 CAA Championships and making 24 postseason appearances since the 2004-05 academic year. In 2008-09 the Pride wrestling team won the CAA Championship for an eighth consecutive year, while the men’s lacrosse program advanced to the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection. In addition, Hofstra hosted the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals in 2009, which saw nearly 12,000 people fill James M. Shuart Stadium for the event. Hayes has placed a significant emphasis on fund-raising during his tenure. Pride Club membership reached all-time highs, both in terms of the number of contributors and funds raised as the organization topped the $1 million mark in each of the last two years. Resources generated through fund-raising efforts have been used to enhance programs and facilities available to student-athletes. Recent initiatives include the construction of Hofstra’s new field hockey stadium, as well as the replacement of the artificial turf in Shuart Stadium. Other

Active on a national level, Hayes served on the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Committee from September 2006 to September 2008. Hayes came to Hofstra with more than 14 years of athletic administration experience, including management positions at four Division I institutions – Connecticut, Fordham, St. John’s and Fairfield. Hayes received a master’s degree in education in 1992 with a concentration in sport management from the University of Connecticut. He holds a bachelor’s degree (1989) from Providence College, where he was a member of Providence’s lacrosse team. He was also awarded a certificate of completion in 2001 from the Sports Management Institute, Consortium of the Universities of Michigan and Texas. A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Hayes graduated from the Providence Country Day School where he lettered in football, basketball and lacrosse. He was inducted, as a member of his high school basketball team, into the Providence Country Day Athletic Hall of Fame in October 2004. Hayes resides in East Northport, New York, with his wife Bridget, daughter Katie (7), and sons Matt (4) and Tommy (1).

Hofstra Heritage The symbols of Hofstra University The shield logo

In 2005 Hofstra introduced a new logo as part of a Universitywide reimaging. Both the University’s logo as well as the Pride logo were designed by advertising agency Powell New York, a full-service branding and marketing agency, noted as one of the ten firms to watch in 2005 in Advertising Age. The new University logo features an “H” within a shield design. Hofstra University has always been known for both a tradition of academic excellence and a willingness to evolve to meet the needs of students and the greater society. This shield represents the University’s commitment to our heritage and a tradition of academic excellence, while the dynamic representation of the H within the shield embodies the evolutionary, changing nature of the University. Hofstra University has both honored its traditions and heritage while embracing changing disciplines, using new technology and remaining relevant to scholarly pursuits and the demands of industry.

The seal

The Hofstra seal was designed from the royal Dutch emblem by art instructor Constant Van de Wall. The seal is modeled on the coat of arms of the House of Orange-Nassau. The round seal includes the coat of arms, flanked by lions on either side. A lion also stands in the center of the coat of arms, holding a sword in its right claw and a bundle of seven arrows, which represent the seven provinces of Holland, in its left. The seal also carries the motto of the House of Orange-Nassau in Old French: “Je maintiendray” (I stand steadfast). In 1988 one of the two lions on the seal was officially replaced with a lioness. The Hofstra seal is still in use today, though not as a logo. The seal will be affixed to formal documents, and used for official purposes such as commencement, convocations, and official University functions.

2010 SOFTBALL

The Pride

Hofstra’s athletic teams are officially known as the Pride, providing our teams with a strong, consistent image that resonates with the Hofstra community. The Hofstra Athletics logo consists of a graphic mark of a male and female lion in powerful, synchronized motion with the word mark of the Hofstra Pride or the specific sports team. The Hofstra Pride refers to a pack of lions, male and female, which work together towards a common goal and symbolize determination and strength. The Pride conveys both the teamwork and togetherness that is a trait of lions living in prides, who have a close bond and work together for the good of the entire group. The teamwork evident in prides is a trait of Hofstra’s studentathletes, who support each other in furtherance of a common goal, while working tirelessly to represent their teams and, in turn, the University. Lions also possess speed, tenacity, and agility, and are relentless in their pursuit of a goal, which are traits our studentathletes demonstrate both on and off the field. The first consistent use of the word “Pride” relating to athletics was in 1989 when the University’s athletic booster club was founded and called itself The Pride Club, which at the time simply referred to the pride that alumni and fans had for our teams. The Pride identity has progressed over the past decade in a more specific fashion than just the expression of a feeling. After one lion on the Hofstra seal was changed into a lioness to symbolize gender equity, the University mascots -- Kate and Willie Pride, a lioness and lion – were introduced.

Hofstra Heritage Hofstra’s Dutch Heritage Ties to Dutch heritage and the Netherlands began with William S. Hofstra, after whom the school is named and on whose property the University was started. William Hofstra died in 1932 and when his wife, Kate, died 16 months later, her will provided that their house, 15-acre estate, and bulk of her inheritance were to be used for a “public, charitable, benevolent, or scientific purpose” as a memorial to her husband. The idea for a college came from Truesdel Peck Calkins, former Hempstead superintendent of schools, who was then with New York University. He suggested that NYU might offer extension courses on the Hofstra property. Hofstra opened in September 1935, as a two-year extension branch of NYU; its official name was “Nassau College – Hofstra Memorial of New York University at Hempstead, Long Island.” When the doors opened, the sole building on campus was Hofstra’s mansion, which he had affectionately named the Netherlands after his homeland, and all classes were held there. The mansion, which houses administrative offices, is now the center of Hofstra’s 240-acre campus, and has been renamed Hofstra Hall.

Academic Support

H

ofstra University is committed to the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. The University views participation in intercollegiate athletics as benefiting the student-athlete in an educationally enhancing experience beyond any other opportunity available. Hofstra also realizes the time commitment made by student-athletes and has committed the facilities and resources to support all students. The University Tutorial Program (UTP) provides free tutoring in every subject area to any Hofstra student. Students are able to obtain up to 1 1/2 hours of individual tutorial assistance per week for each subject. They are also able to utilize the various help labs on campus, which specialize in providing assistance in writing, business and QM, and biology and chemistry. In addition to this service, studentathletes are assigned an academic advisor who helps address the various needs of student-athletes. The academic advisor emphasizes four areas in their efforts to ensure the academic success of Hofstra’s student-athletes. Area one is academic counseling. Services are provided in the areas of academic planning, career planning, personal counseling, and campus and community referrals. The counselor also meets with prospective student-athletes, at the coach’s request, to share the many benefits of a Hofstra University education. Area two is academic advising. In an effort to ease the demand on the Office of Advisement, the academic advisor also advises first-year and undecided student-athletes.

2010 SOFTBALL

Area three is academic monitoring. The UTP counselor monitors the academic progress of student-athletes to ensure compliance with Hofstra University, NCAA and conference regulations. The counselor’s regular communication with the faculty and coaches provide an opportunity for early intervention should academic difficulties arise. Area four is study halls. The University Tutorial Program provides all athletic study halls with tutors in various subjects and assesses the needs of individual student-athletes to provide the most effective study environment. The assessment tool administered by the UTP is also used to provide various enrichment seminars for the student-athletes such as time management, writing skills, campus resources, and surviving the college transition. In the fall of 1999 a computer lab opened on the second floor of Margiotta Hall. Funded in part by proceeds from the Joe Gardi Golf Open, the state-of-the-art computer lab and learning center features a projection system and 18 computer workstations, which are connected to the University network for easy research access to the Internet. The room was refurbished in 2005 with new furniture and computers. In addition to the Margiotta Hall computer lab, a new study area was constructed in 2006, located in the Physical Fitness Center, which features numerous computer workstations and office space for University academic advisement personnel.

Sports Medicine/Athletic Training

T

hrough a comprehensive athletic training program, Hofstra University student-athletes are provided excellent health care during their attendance at the University. A coordinated effort between the University Health and Wellness Center, the Athletic Department and outside health care providers ensures every student-athlete the best medical attention possible. University student-athletes have direct access to a myriad of health care services. Managing the coverage of every practice and competition event is Hofstra University’s athletic training staff, which is led by seventh-year Head Athletic Trainer Evan Malings and features eight full-time athletic trainers and numerous student athletic trainers. The athletic trainers provide injury management, rehabilitation and treatment to the entire Athletic program. Utilizing three state-of-the-art athletic training rooms, these professionals work tirelessly to ensure the safe participation of Hofstra’s student-athletes and to return injured athletes to play quickly and safely. Supporting the athletic trainers is team physician Dr. Michael Yorio. Dr. Yorio, a physician with Pro Health Care, Inc. in Lake Success, New York, is in his first year on Hofstra’s medical team. Yorio is an internist with specialized training in sports medicine. He earned his undergraduate degree at Villanova University, and received his medical degree from the SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse. Yorio previously served as a sports medicine fellow with the University of Maryland Orthopedics. Prior to that, he was a resident physician in internal medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Yorio was named the Director of Player Medical Services for the 2008 U.S. Open Tennis Tournament in Flushing, New York, and is on the medical staff for the New York Islanders. He also worked as a team physician for the University of Maryland from 2003 to 2005. Hofstra University sponsors a fully accredited, highly competitive undergraduate degree program for athletic training majors, in which Hofstra student athletic trainers participate in all aspects of the health care system.

The Softball Stadium is located next to the Mack Sports Complex and across from the Hofstra Recreation Center. Since the Stadium opened, the Pride has a 209-42 record at home, including 81-11 against CAA opponents. The Stadium, constructed in 2000, provides a fine setting for collegiate softball action. Construction included new sunken dugouts, new outfield sod, a press box on top of the bleachers behind home plate, batting cages next to the dugouts and a bullpen area. Bleacher seating behind home plate, from dugout to dugout, accommodates nearly 1,000 spectators. Field dimensions are 190 feet down the lines and 220 feet to centerfield. Banners commemorating Hofstra’s team achievements are displayed on the outfield fences, while plaques mounted to the facade of the Stadium showcase individual awards won by Hofstra Softball players. Hofstra Softball Stadium has hosted seven Colonial Athletic Association Championships, as well as NCAA Regionals in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and is also the site of the Catholic League High School Softball Championship. One of the finest softball facilities in the metropolitan area, Hofstra’s Softball Stadium was also home to the New York Juggernaut of the National Pro Fastpicth League in the summer of 2005. The Pride not only boasts one of the better softball facilities in the Northeast, but also has a first-class locker room. The locker room, located in the Physical Fitness Center, includes oak lockers and an entertainment center with a television and stereo.

2009 Season in review another banner season: Hofstra earned the regular season CAA championship with a 14-3 record. It marked the 18th straight season in which the Pride has won some form of conference title (either regular season or tournament), dating back to the 1992 season in the East Coast Conference, when it won the league’s tournament. The Pride missed out on the postseason title, though, ending a streak of 11 straight conference championships, which set an NCAA record. The Colonial Athletic Association

T

he Colonial Athletic Association celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2009-10 with memories of a proud and storied past and visions of an exciting future.

Regarded as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences, the CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 20 NCAA postgraduate scholars. In 2008-09, the CAA had more than 1,700 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference ranked in the top 10 in the nation in 12 of its 23 sports in the latest APR report released by the NCAA. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA currently sponsors 23 sports with the addition of a 12-team football league in 2007 and women’s rowing in 2009. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 2008-09, 28 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 45 studentathletes received All-America honors. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with a league-record five teams advancing to postseason play in 2008-09. Conference champion VCU made its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last six years, while George Mason reached the postseason for the seventh time in a decade in the NIT. Old Dominion, making its fifth straight postseason trip, captured the inaugural CIT championship, while James Madison made the CIT semifinals. Northeastern reached the quarterfinals of the CBI. In 2006, George Mason captured the nation’s imagination by becoming the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach the Final Four, knocking off powerhouses Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the way. The Patriots were ranked No. 8 in the final ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll, which was the highest ever for a CAA team. The CAA has had at least three women’s basketball teams participate in post-season play for the past four seasons. Drexel captured its first CAA championship in 2009 and was joined in the NCAA Tournament by VCU, giving the league multiple teams in the Big Dance for the second time in three years. James Madison earned a post-season berth for the fourth year in a row in the WNIT. Perennial power Old Dominion, which has won three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) and was national runner-up in 1997, claimed an NCAA-record 17 straight CAA titles before seeing its incredible streak come to an end last year.

46

The conference also excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. Three women’s soccer teams have reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the past two seasons and at least one men’s soccer team has advanced to the final 16 of the NCAA Championship in five of the last seven years. In men’s cross country, William & Mary placed 16th nationally as a team in 2008 and Georgia State’s Mark Steeds earned All-America status after a 12th-place individual effort. On the mat, ODU’s Ryan Williams was one of three wrestling All-Americans after finishing as the national runner-up at 141 pounds. The CAA has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship in nine of the last 12 years and has had 12 or more players selected in the last seven Major League Baseball drafts. The conference also boasts numerous All-Americans in tennis, golf, track and field and swimming and diving. CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs already established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, academic resource centers and computer labs. In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions were awarded academia’s most coveted distinction – the Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University, received the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of economics and law at George Mason University, shared the Nobel Prize in economic sciences. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005. Celebrating its 25th Anniversary, the CAA takes great pride in producing student-athletes who stand out on the playing field and in the classroom.

Hofstra’s Professional and Olympic Players

T

he Pride has produces several players that went on to pursue careers in professional softball or with their national team. Former All-American Crystal Boyd was the first Hofstra player to play pro ball in the United States as a member of the WPSL’s Georgia Pride from 1997 to 1999. Standout pitchers Stacy Jackson and Erin Phillips fulfilled their professional aspirations overseas, as Jackson played in Italy and Phillips in Holland. All-American Alicia Smith and all-star Jen Smith were draft selections in the National Pro Fastpitch league and played for the New York/New Jersey Juggernaut franchise. Danielle Stewart returned to her native Australia following graduation and was a member of the Australian National Team that won the bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

Media Following

H

ofstra’s success on the softball diamond has generated a great deal of media coverage for the Pride. Local newspapers, television and radio stations are frequent guests at the Hofstra Softball Stadium. Hofstra Softball has also been featured in several national publications including The Sporting News, and on the web at ESPN.com. Each season, Hofstra’s student-radio station (WRHU) broadcasts most home games, including all CAA and NCAA Championship events.

Hofstra in the Community

T

he Hofstra Softball program is extremely active in the Long Island community, lending itself to a variety of charitable and educational causes.

The team has raised money for and participated in the American Cancer Society’s Walk for a Cure at Jones Beach. This past season, Hofstra hosted a Think Pink Day and wore pink jerseys in support of breast cancer research. The team also supports the HEADstrong Foundation, which was founded by former Pride lacrosse player Nick Colleluori. Nick was diagnosed with nonHodgkin’s Lymphoma and created the foundation to help raise awareness before he passed away. During the Holiday season each class sponsored a needy family – providing food, decorations and gifts to help brighten their day. The team is also involved with the Big Brother/Big Sister program and the Long Island Special Olympics. The team holds clinics to teach the game and to spend time with each group.

Hannah Prokop

The Hofstra Softball program is also involved with the Women’s Sports Foundation and participates in WSFsponsored clinics throughout the year. Several times each year, Pride players and coaches speak at schools and softball clinics. The team also participates in a reading program with the Glen Cove Head Start day care program. Through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, the team “adopted” Hannah Prokop, a 7-year old girl who was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The team welcomes Hannah and her family to games, and spends time with her on a regular basis.

Cancer survivor louise Valentino, mother of the Pride’s laura Valentino, threw ou the first pitch on Think Pink Day
