head baseball coach patrick anderson
P
atrick Anderson is in his third season as head baseball coach at Hofstra University. Anderson was named the 13th coach in the program’s 71-year history on August 11, 2008. In his two seasons, Anderson has posted a 31-601 record and has coached four players to All-Colonial Athletic Association honors, as well as one Major League Baseball Draft selection Anderson led the Pride to a 20-win season in 2010, despite fielding a team with 20 new players, including 15 freshmen. He kept the team in contention for a Colonial Athletic Association Championship berth until the second to last weekend of the season. The team was 10-14 in CAA play and finished eighth after being selected last in the preseason coaches’ poll. The 20 wins marked a nine-victory improvement over the 2009 season and the 10 CAA wins were four more than the previous season. Three players – Matt Prokopowicz, Ethan Paquette and Matt Ford – earned postseason recognition from the Colonial Athletic Association with Prokopowicz and Paquette garnering first team All-CAA honors, while Ford was named to the All-Rookie team. Paquette would go on to be selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 35th Round of the 2010 MLB Draft. Three individual team records were set in 2010 with Prokopowicz establishing himself as the program’s all-time hits leader with 271. In addition, Paquette established a new benchmark for RBIs in a season with 70, while reliever Jeff Guthridge set the single season appearance mark by pitching in 31 games. As a team the Pride set a new single season record for fielding percentage at .968 and their 60 errors were the
fewest since the 1987 squad posted 58 in just 27 games. Offensively the team compiled a .320 average, eclipsing the .300 mark for the first time since 1999. In his first season (2009) Anderson coached his team to an 11-32 record, but saw Mark Stuckless blossom under his tutelage as the senior earned Colonial Athletic Association first team accolades and was the CAA Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year after flirting with a .400 batting average and led the Pride in batting (.392), hits (69), runs (43), doubles (11), triples (4) and home runs (5). During his short tenure Anderson has also helped improve the Pride’s facilities through fundraising initiatives. Through his efforts and the leadership and support of baseball alumnus Bruce Quinn ’86, the Quinn Family Grandstand was installed in 2010. Future plans for University Field include moving and raising the height of the outfield fences. Anderson, who served as an assistant coach at Hofstra for three seasons from 1998 to 2001, spent eight seasons as a minor league hitting and catching

instructor with the Kansas City Royals Professional Baseball Club before returning to Hempstead. Anderson served as a roving instructor at various levels of the organization - from rookie ball to Kansas City’s Triple A affiliate - working with high-level prospects that Kansas City touted as potential major league players. During his tenure with the Royal’s Anderson worked with many future major leaguer’s including Mike Sweeney, Gregg Zaun and Donnie Murphy.

His work for the Royals also saw him serve as hitting coach for the Gulf Coast Royals (Rookie League) in 2001, the Class A Burlington (IA) Bee’s from 2002 to 2006, the Idaho Falls Chukars (Advanced Rookie League) in 2007 and the rookie affiliate Burlington (NC) Royals in 2008. Anderson began his coaching career in 1996 at Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania, serving as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. After leaving Gannon in 1997 he began coaching at The Baseball Factory, an organization that evaluates and showcases potential collegiate and professional players, in Ellicott City, Maryland. Anderson began his first Hofstra tenure in the fall of 1998, serving as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under Head Coach Reginald Jackson. In 2000 Anderson served as hitting coach for the Orleans Cardinals of the prestigious Cape Cod Collegiate Summer League, building individual project plans for each player. In his one season with the Cardinals, Anderson coached future Arizona Diamondback Chad Tracy. An individual instructor for seven years, Anderson has also worked for the Long Island Astros organization, serving as their Winter Fundamental Baseball Camp Director from 2003 to 2008. He also is a volunteer coach and coordinator for the Big Brothers/Challenger Baseball League. Anderson’s experience is not only limited to coaching as he played professionally in the late 1990s for two independent league teams (Chillicothe Paints and Zanesville Greys) and was an all-star for both organizations. A native of Silver Spring, Maryland, Anderson graduated in 1997 with a degree in physical education and a concentration in sports management from Mars Hill College in North Carolina. He is married to Hofstra Softball Associate Head Coach Larissa Anderson and resides in Levittown, New York.

2011 outlook
T
he Hofstra Baseball team, which was picked at the bottom of the 2010 preseason coaches poll, won 20 games and stayed in contention for a CAA Playoff berth until the second to last weekend of the season. Third-year Head Coach Patrick Anderson has the Pride moving in the right direction, and the team will look to make another positive step in 2011. As the team heads into a new season, Anderson is pleased with how his squad shapes up. “I am very excited about the upcoming season. We have a great deal of talent on this team. Our young pitching staff is getting better every day, and I think overall we are a stronger offensive and defensive team than we were last season.” For the first time in his three seasons, Anderson feels that he has enough depth at every position. While that may cause him to have to be creative with his lineup in order to keep everyone sharp, it is a welcome “problem” to have. The Pride will field a new-look team this spring, as only three position starters return, but several talented freshmen and junior college transfers are ready to step in and play right off the bat. Overall the team returns 19 players from last season, including three who sat out the 2010 campaign. Here is a look at the 2011 Pride:
Pitcher Jared Rogers
The Pride’s pitching staff is relatively young, with 13 of the 17 hurlers either sophomore’s or freshmen. But those sophomores saw a lot of work last season and their progress will be vital to 2011’s success. Two of those sophomore’s – David D’Errico and Jared Rogers – will be on the front-end of the Hofstra rotation. D’Errico was 3-3 with a 7.66 ERA in 14 appearances (10 starts) as a freshman. Rogers won a team-high four games (4-7) in 13 starts.
The starting rotation does get bolstered by the return of Rob Kumbatovic, who sat out last season. Kumbatovic, who graduated this past December and is now enrolled in graduate school, won four games in 2009 and led the team with a 7.61 ERA and 44 strikeouts. Freshman Everett Keller has the inside track as the #4 starter and could push to crack the weekend rotation. Keller was a standout at Jeff Guthridge Port Washington’s (NY) Schrieber High School where he was an All-Nassau County performer. The Hofstra bullpen features nine returnees who saw action for the Pride, as well as three newcomers. Senior Jeff Guthridge is the most experienced member of the
10
pen and is coming off a 2010 season in which he posted a 2-3 record, two saves and a team-best 5.98 ERA in a school-record 31 appearances. Anderson plans to utilize Guthridge, who possesses a sidearm delivery, in critical game situations and not just in closing situations. Classmate Sean Monaghan, who started nine of his 17 games last season, returns and will man a relief role in addition to serving as a spot starter. Monaghan was 3-6 with an 8.60 ERA in his first season with the Pride after transferring from Nassau Community College. Sophomore Joe Burg appeared in 25 games as a freshman and was 2-2 with one save and a 7.00 ERA. Burg, who is the only lefty on the roster, will serve in short relief. Classmates Andrew Barbarino, Cody Normand, Gregg Sarra, John Krause, Gregg Lettini and Drew Liebert will also pitch out of the bullpen. Normand, Sarra, Lettini and Liebert will work in long relief. Normand was 2-1 in 15 appearances (one start) as a freshman, while Sarra did not record a decision in six appearances. Lettini was 1-0 in 12 appearances (one start) and Liebert was 0-0 in 17 relief appearances. Barbarino and Krause are slated to as short men and Krause is a possibility to man the closer role. Barbarino made 20 appearances last season and started twice. He was 2-1 with two saves and a 6.43 ERA. Krause did not post a decision in 15 appearances. Opposing batters hit only .235 against him, but control issues limited him to just 13.1 innings pitched. Junior college transfer Stephan Kungl will pitch in late-inning situations and could emerge as a closer candidate. Kungl, who pitched and played third base at Cypress College, was 0-0 with a 2.38 ERA in six appearances for the Chargers. Red-shirt freshman Brett Schreiber will work in middle relief in his first season after transferring from Massachusetts-Boston. Schreiber sat out last season and was a standout at Clarke High School, leading the team to Nassau County and Long Island championships as a senior. Freshman Bryan Verbitsky, who will likely be a regular in the lineup, could also see action on the hill in a lateinning role. Verbitsky was a two-time Diamond Award recipient as the top player in Nassau County at Island Trees High School. He went 4-1 as a pitcher with a 2.63 ERA last season. Classmate Andrew Rosenberger will also look to see action on the mound in a relief role. Rosenberger was a scholar-athlete at Chaminade College Prep in California.
Catcher The Pride have four catchers – junior Dylan Nasiatka, senior Kevin Flynn, sophomore Mike Beers and freshman Matt Reistetter - on the roster. Nasiatka, a transfer from Bakersfield (CA) College, and Reistetter, who was a standout at Hauppauge (NY) High School, will likely split time behind the plate with Flynn and Beers serving in back-up roles. Nasiatka batted .473 with 17 doubles, 33 RBIs and 46 runs scored at Bakersfield last season en route to California
Kevin Flynn
Hofstra University
Community College All-America honors. Reistetter was a two-time All-New York State selection and batted .431 with 102 RBIs during his scholastic career. Flynn hit .281 in 48 games last season, while Beers hit .211 in 19 at-bats.
Infield Matt Ford
The Hofstra infield is versatile with several players able to play multiple positions. The coaching staff is also happy with the defensive potential of the group.
Sophomore shortstop Matt Ford, a CAA All-Rookie selection in 2010, returns to his starting job after batting .311 with nine doubles and 27 RBIs as a freshman. Sophomore Jared Hammer also returns at first base after starting 30 of 37 games last season, batting .284 with two home runs and 12 RBIs. Hammer will likely split time at first base with newcomer Joe Perez, a transfer from College of the Sequoias in California who will also see action at third base. Perez batted .348 with 11 doubles and 28 RBIs and was a Rawlings Pacific Association Gold Glove Award winner at third last season. Freshman Bobby Gazzola will likely get the bulk of the playing time at second base after winning the job in the fall, but could also Jared see action at short and third. Hammer Gazzola was an All-New York State selection at Longwood High School on Long Island and hit .330 with 26 RBIs as a senior. Classmate Logan Davis will also be in the lineup, splitting time at third, short and second. Davis, the son of former Cy Young Award winner Mark Davis, was a 38th round pick of the Colorado Rockies in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft and hit .433, with eight doubles, six triples, 24 RBIs and 20 stolen bases as a senior at Cactus Shadows High School in Arizona. Freshman Nic Wilson could also pick up some time at first base. Wilson joins the Pride from Decatur (GA) High School where he batted .425 as a senior. Wilson could also be utilized as a bat off the bench as he has good power potential.
Outfield The Hofstra outfield features six players vying for playing time. Senior Scott A’Hara is the lone returnee from last year and will start in left field after batting .346 with nine doubles and 23 RBIs during his junior campaign. Junior T.J. Thomas, who sat out last year after transferring from San Diego State, is expected to give the Pride a big middle of the order presence and will start in right field. Thomas could also see
2011 B a s e b a l l
Scott A’Hara
action at first base. Cuesta (CA) College transfer Danny Poma will start in centerfield. Poma was limited to 18 games as a sophomore, but batted .304 with 10 stolen bases and 25 RBIs as a freshman in 2009.
Freshmen Bryan Verbitsky, Kenny Jackson and Rhode Island transfer Taylor Stuart could play any of the outfield positions and Verbitsky is in line for at-bats as a designated hitter as well. A two-time All-New York State selection, Verbitsky batted .411 with a .945 slugging percentage and .556 on-base percentage as a senior. He led Nassau County with 12 home runs and added 36 RBIs. Jackson come to Hofstra from Connetquot High School on Long Island where he was an All-Long Island selection as a senior after batting .440 with 31 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. Stuart possesses a great deal of speed and will likely be utilized as the Pride’s primary pinch-runner.
Schedule Six 2010 NCAA Tournament teams, including Miami (FL) and College World Series participant Florida State, highlight the 2011 Hofstra University Baseball schedule. The Pride’s non-conference slate features 21 games against 11 opponents, who combined to post 345 wins last year. “Our nonconference schedule is challenging,” said Coach Anderson. “But we want to challenge our players and help them get better by facing the best competition we can.” Hofstra opens the season February 18 with a three game series at Florida Atlantic, which earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament last season and is ranked 36th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Preseason Poll. The Pride return to Florida a week later to take on perennial power Florida State in a three-game set. The Seminoles, who are ranked 13th in the preseason, won 48 games a season ago and advanced to the College World Series. The Pride will also make a late season trip to Coral Gables, Florida, for their first-ever meeting with the Hurricanes of Miami who are coming off a 43-win campaign and an NCAA appearance. Miami is ranked 18th in the preseason poll. The Pride will also face NCAA Tournament teams Rider and St. John’s at University Field. Rider won 31 games last season, while the Red Storm had 43 wins and are ranked 26th in the preseason poll. The Colonial Athletic Association slate features a road series at 2010 champion and NCAA participant Virginia Commonwealth. The Pride will open league play at James Madison and will also play road series’ at William and Mary, Northeastern and Georgia State. The Pride host conference foes Delaware, Towson, George Mason, UNC Wilmington and Old Dominion. “Our league is very competitive and there are no easy games on the schedule,” said Anderson. “I am pleased that we play five series’ at home where we won 13 games last year. We stayed in contention for a playoff spot until late last season and I hope that we can take that next step this year.

In its relatively short history, Hofstra has established itself as a world-class institution of higher education and cultural enterprise. Each academic year, the Hofstra campus and the programs offered grow and change to meet the demands of our students and our community. Hofstra opened in 1935 as a commuter school with all classes and offices housed in one building. Since those early days, Hofstra has evolved into an international institution with a student body hailing from 47 states and territories, and 67 countries around the world. The beautiful campus is an accredited arboretum with 115 buildings on 240 acres. There are approximately 4,200 students living on campus, and Hofstra offers them and all students an extensive array of academic and social activities. Additionally, Hofstra’s close proximity to Manhattan means that students have easy access to the wondrous cultural, social and career offerings of the city. In October 2008 the eyes of the world were on Hofstra as the University hosted the final presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. The October 15 debate, moderated by Bob Schieffer, was a transformational moment for the University, highlighting the achievements of our students and faculty and their engagement in the political process. Leading up to the debate, students and the entire community were engaged by the year-long Educate ’08 program, almost 150 lectures, conferences, and events focused on the issues, history and politics of the presidency. Hofstra has followed the Educate ’08 program with Define ’09, a year-long series of programs designed to examine the new presidential administration, its policies and initiatives, the challenges we currently face and ways of addressing our country’s most pressing issues. 2008 also saw Hofstra award its first Guru Nanak Interfaith Prize to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet. The new international award, which recognizes efforts at interfaith dialogue, received 75 nominations for individuals and organizations from around the world. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
J
ack Hayes is in his seventh year as director of athletics at Hofstra University in 2010-11. Hayes was appointed by Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz as the University’s director of athletics on October 4, 2004. Hayes came to Hofstra after serving as an associate director of athletics at the University of Connecticut for three years. Hayes, the eighth director of athletics at Hofstra, leads a department that includes 17 Division I teams, 90 coaches and administrative staff members and 350 student-athletes. Hayes’ proven expertise in enhancing academic and athletic success of student-athletes, strategic planning, fund-raising, marketing, university relations, facility enhancement, budgetary management, and NCAA compliance complements Hofstra University’s athletic department in its quest to further enhance its athletic program, and assist Hofstra’s student-athletes both on and off the field. The Hofstra Athletic program has flourished under Hayes’ leadership, winning 19 CAA Championships and making 28 postseason appearances, including 21 NCAA Tournaments, since the 2004-05 academic year. In 2009-10 four Pride teams qualified for postseason play, while in 2008-09 the Pride wrestling team won the CAA Championship for an eighth consecutive year and the men’s lacrosse program advanced to the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection. In addition, Hofstra hosted the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals in 2009, which saw nearly 12,000 people fill James M. Shuart Stadium for the event.
JACK HAYES Director of Athletics
Hayes has placed a significant emphasis on fund-raising during his tenure. Pride Club membership reached all-time highs, both in terms of the number of contributors and funds raised as the organization topped the $1 million mark for the third consecutive year in 200910. Resources generated through fund-raising efforts have been used to enhance programs and facilities available to student-athletes. Recent initiatives include the construction of baseball’s Quinn Family Grandstand and The Fried Family Student-Athlete Development Center on the second floor of the James M. Shuart Stadium Building. Other recent renovations include locker rooms, the wrestling room, athletic training rooms in Margiotta Hall and the Physical Fitness Center, the basketball media room in the Mack Sports Complex, a press box at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium, replacement of the turf at James M. Shuart Stadium and the construction of the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. In 2006 Hayes reintroduced the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame after more than a 50-year absence, inducting four classes since that time. He also led an effort to retire the uniform numbers of prominent Hofstra student-athletes with 20 jersey retirement ceremonies held during the 2008-09 academic year. Active on a national level, Hayes served on the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Committee from September 2006 to September 2008. In September 2010 he was appointed to the NCAA Leadership Council, which is an advisory body to the Division I Board of Directors.

He holds a bachelor’s degree (1989) from Providence College, where he was a member of Providence’s lacrosse team. He was also awarded a certificate of completion in 2001 from the Sports Management Institute, Consortium of the Universities of Michigan and Texas. A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Hayes graduated from the Providence Country Day School where he lettered in football, basketball and lacrosse. He was inducted, as a member of his high school basketball team, into the Providence Country Day Athletic Hall of Fame in October 2004. ATHLETIC ACADEMIC SUPPORT
H
ofstra University is committed to the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. The University views participation in intercollegiate athletics as benefiting the student-athlete in an educationally enhancing experience beyond any other opportunity available. Hofstra also realizes the time commitment made by studentathletes and has committed the facilities and resources to support all students.
The University Tutorial Program (UTP) provides free tutoring in every subject area to any Hofstra student. Students are able to obtain up to 1 1/2 hours of individual tutorial assistance per week for up to three courses. They are also able to utilize the various help labs on campus, which specialize in providing assistance in writing, business and QM, and biology and chemistry. In addition to this service, student-athletes are assigned an academic advisor, through the Center for University Advisement, who helps address the various needs of student‑athletes. The academic advisor emphasizes four areas in their efforts to ensure the academic success of Hofstra’s student-athletes.
Area four is study halls. The University Tutorial Program supports athletic study halls by providing tutors in various subjects as necessary. The academic advisors also assess the needs of individual student‑athletes to provide the most effective study environment. The assessment tool administered by the Center for University Advisement is also used to provide various enrichment seminars for the student‑athletes such as time management, writing skills, campus resources, and surviving the college transition. In 2010 The Fried Family StudentAthlete Development Center was opened on the second level of the James M. Shuart Stadium Building. The center houses the offices of the Student-Athlete Services staff, as well as a large computer lab with printer access for use by Hofstra studentathletes, a quiet study area with wireless internet access and two group study/tutor rooms with power point access and white boards.
Area one is academic counseling. Services are provided in the areas of academic planning, career planning, personal counseling, and campus and community referrals. The advisor also meets with prospective student‑athletes, at the coach’s request, to share the many benefits of a Hofstra University education. Area two is academic advising. The academic advisor serves as the primary advisor for first-year and undecided student-athletes, and also assists upperclassmen who have declared a major. Area three is academic monitoring. The advisor monitors the academic progress of student‑athletes to ensure compliance with Hofstra University, NCAA and conference regulations. The advisor’s regular communication with the faculty and coaches provide opportunities for early intervention should academic difficulties arise.

sports medicine/athletic training
T
hrough a comprehensive athletic training program, Hofstra University student-athletes are provided excellent health care during their attendance at the University. A coordinated effort between the University Health and Wellness Center, the Athletic Department and outside health care providers ensures every student-athlete the best medical attention possible. University student-athletes have direct access to a myriad of health care services. Managing the coverage of every practice and competition event is Hofstra University’s athletic training staff, which is led by seventh-year Head Athletic Trainer Evan Malings and features eight full-time athletic trainers and numerous student athletic trainers. The athletic trainers provide injury management, rehabilitation and treatment to the entire Athletic program. Utilizing three state-of-the-art athletic training rooms, these professionals work tirelessly to ensure the safe participation of Hofstra’s student-athletes and to return injured athletes to play quickly and safely. Supporting the athletic trainers is team physician Dr. Michael Yorio. Dr. Yorio, a physician with Pro Health Care, Inc. in Lake Success, New York, is in his first year on Hofstra’s medical team. Yorio is an internist with specialized training in sports medicine. He earned his undergraduate degree at Villanova University, and received his medical degree from the SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse. Yorio previously served as a sports medicine fellow with the University of Maryland Orthopedics. Prior to that, he was a resident physician in internal medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Yorio was named the Director of Player Medical Services for the 2008 U.S. Open Tennis Tournament in Flushing, New York, and is on the medical staff for the New York Islanders. He also worked as a team physician for the University of Maryland from 2003 to 2005. Hofstra University sponsors a fully accredited, highly competitive undergraduate degree program for athletic training majors, in which Hofstra student athletic trainers participate in all aspects of the health care system.

long island
About Long Island Long Island has a rich history as an active, vibrant community, a summer playground, and home to some of New York’s most prominent families. Five distinct regions make up Long Island: • North Shore, otherwise known as the Gold Coast, with dozens of historic sites dating back to colonial days and Gatsby-era mansions. • South Shore, the Island’s spectator sports and entertainment center, with world-famous Jones and Fire Island Beaches, and home to the New York Islanders. • Central Suffolk, with beautiful forests and natural inlets, the world’s largest factory outlet center and a huge water park. • North Fork, with an array of vineyards, waterfront ports and farm stands. • South Fork, widely known as “The Hamptons,” with its pristine beaches and exclusive villages. You can catch a Hofstra shuttle bus to Jones Beach – a state park with six miles of gorgeous coastline, a boardwalk, swimming pools, golf and outdoor concerts. With everything from museums, historical sites and lighthouses, to sophisticated malls, designer outlets and shopping villages, to wineries and farm stands, to family fun parks, aquariums and zoos, there is plenty to do on Long Island.

UNIVERSITY FIELD
T
he Pride call University Field, located on Hofstra’s North Campus, their home. University Field is centrally located between two of the most frequented sites on campus, the Hofstra Fitness Center and the Mack Sports Complex. It is also just 25 yards from the Colonial Square residential complex. University Field has undergone major renovations in recent years. This past offseason, the fences were moved back and raised in certain places. In 2010 the Quinn Family Grandstand was constructed behind home plate. The 400-seat grandstand was made possible by the leadership and generosity of Hofstra baseball alumnus Bruce Quinn, class of 1986. It features chair-back seating, two entrance ramps, handicap-accessible seating and a press box. Other recent improvements include a new drainage system and the installation of “Competition Turf ” by Edel Grass. The artificial grass surface, which is similar to what is used at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was installed by Landtek of Amityville, New York. Having a turf infield gives the Pride greater flexibility in playing during inclement weather and allows for greater use during the summer months. New fences were installed along the right field and left field lines, and in 2006 the field received a new scoreboard in right centerfield. During the summer of 2004, the outfield warning track was resurfaced with crushed gravel for better playability and drainage. In 2003 the existing dugouts were replaced with sunken dugouts, measuring 70 feet in length, with protective fencing. University Field has dimensions of 322 feet down the left field line, 382 to centerfield and 337 down the right field line. The fence in centerfield is 30-feet high, while the rest of the fence is 20-feet high.

HOFSTRA IN THE COMMUNITY
T
he Hofstra Baseball program is extremely active in the Long Island community, lending itself to a variety of charitable and educational causes.
The team is actively involved with the Hempstead Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and the Long Island Special Olympics. The team holds clinics to teach the game and to spend time with each group. Through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, the team “adopted” Colin Conaty, a 5-year old boy who is a brain cancer survivor. The team welcomes Colin and his family to games each season and spends time with him off the field as well. Prior to a game last season, Colin threw out the ceremonial first pitch. This past fall the Pride took part in the Shake and Rake program, sponsored by the Office of Off-Campus Living and Commuting Student Services. Student-athletes and coaches visited 13 homes in the Hempstead and Uniondale communities to provide yard work assistance to local residents. The team has also raised money for and participated in the American Cancer Society’s Walk for a Cure at Jones Beach, as well as lending its support to Long Island Cares food drives. On the educational side, team members are frequent participants in reading day initiatives at local elementary schools.

THE COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
C
oming off the celebration of its 25th Anniversary in 2009-10, the Colonial Athletic Association has built a reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences both athletically and academically. The CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 20 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2009-10 the CAA had more than 1,700 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes receive the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference had 28 teams in 15 different sports receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the latest Academic Progress Report released in 2010. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA currently sponsors 23 sports with the addition of a football league in 2007 and women’s rowing in 2009. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 200910, 20 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 32 student-athletes received AllAmerica honors. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with a leaguerecord six teams advancing to postseason play in 2009-10. Conference champion Old

Dominion made its third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last six years and knocked off Notre Dame in the first round. Northeastern and William and Mary received berths in the NIT. VCU posted five straight victories and captured the CBI championship. Hofstra also took part in the CBI and George Mason played in the CIT. In 2006, George Mason captured the nation’s imagination by becoming the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach the Final Four, knocking off powerhouses Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the way. The Patriots were ranked No. 8 in the final ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll, which was the highest ever for a CAA team. A league-record seven CAA women’s basketball teams advanced to postseason play in 2009-10. James Madison represented the conference in the NCAA Tournament after capturing its first CAA championship since 1989. Delaware, Drexel, Hofstra, Old Dominion and VCU participated in the WNIT, with VCU advancing to the third round. Towson took part in the WBI. ODU, which won an NCAA-record 17 straight CAA titles from 1992-2008, boasts three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) and was national runner-up in 1997. The conference also excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. Three women’s soccer teams have reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in two of the past three seasons and at least one men’s soccer team has advanced to the final 16 of the NCAA Championship in five of the last eight years. In men’s cross country, William & Mary placed fifth nationally as a team in 2009 and had three runners earn All-America status. In the pool, George Mason’s Ashley Danner finished as the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke at the 2010 NCAA Championship and received All-America honors along with Towson’s Meredith Budner. The CAA has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship in nine of the last 13 years and has had at least 12 players selected in the last eight Major League Baseball drafts. The conference also boasts numerous All-
Americans in tennis, golf, track and field, women’s lacrosse and wrestling. CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs already established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, academic resource centers and computer labs. In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions were awarded academia’s most coveted distinction – the Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University, received the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of economics and law at George Mason University, shared the Nobel Prize in economic sciences. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005.
