summer of 2011 and led the team to a 26-16 mark and a spot in the NECBL Playoffs. His team set a league record for stolen bases in 2011 with 118 while outfielder Brian O’Grady stole a teamrecord 25 bags. During his tenure with the Mountaineers, Russo has posted a 163115 record and was the 2005 NECBL Manager of the Year. He has coached more than 60 players who were selected in the MLB Draft, including Christian Friedrich (2008 first round pick by the Colorado Rockies) and A.J. Pollock (2009 first round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks). Entering the 2012 Major League Baseball season, he has coached three players - David Carpenter (Houston), Darin Mastroianni (Toronto) and Friedrich - that are currently on the 40-man rosters of their respective teams. From 2001 to 2005, Russo served as assistant coach at Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. In his role as infield coach, St. Joseph’s led its conference in fielding and ranked in the top 10 nationally three times during his four seasons. Russo also monitored the academic progress of his team, which compiled an overall GPA of 3.1 during his tenure. Russo began his career in 1998 as hitting coach at the University of West Alabama, helping the team set nine individual and team batting records in his three seasons. A 2000 graduate of West Alabama with a degree in secondary education and a concentration in physical education, Russo had been a teacher and athletic director in the Millburn School District in Wadsworth, Illinois, from 2005 to 2008. Assistant Coach Kelly Haynes
K
elly Haynes, a 1996 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina, is in his second stint as an assistant coach for the Hofstra University Baseball team. Haynes, who will work with the Pride’s outfield, hitters and serve as the third base coach, brings 10 years of collegiate experience to the Hofstra dugout. Haynes had served as an assistant coach during the 2010 season before spending the 2010-11 academic year at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, North Carolina. At Catawba Valley, Haynes served as the associate head coach and was responsible for working with the hitters as well as the infield defense. In his one season he helped guide the second-year program to a 3815 record and as high as a #3 ranking in NJCAA Division II. Haynes also coached at his alma mater for eight seasons (1997-03, 2007). During his tenure, he served as a recruiting coordinator, infield coach
and assisted with hitters. Haynes helped the school win conference tournament championships in 2000 and 2001. He also was part of a staff that led Lenoir-Rhyne to school records for wins in four different seasons, including the current mark of 35 wins in 2007. Lenoir-Rhyne appeared in the NCAA Division II South Regional in 2001, and also finished in the Collegiate Baseball Top 25 that season. Haynes coached 22 allconference performers, five AllSouth Region selections and two conference rookies of the year during his time with the Bears. Haynes, who played two seasons at Brevard College from 1992 to 1993, was named Offensive Most Valuable Player at Lenoir-Rhyne in 1995, and was named to the South Atlantic Conference AllTournament Team in 1996. Haynes and his wife Angie, have one daughter, Maddie (9). He currently resides in East Meadow, New York.

Assistant Coach Jamie Quinn
J
amie Quinn enters his first season as an assistant coach on the Hofstra Baseball staff. Quinn will coach catchers and oversee the bullpen, while assisting with the hitters. Quinn brings three years of collegiate coaching experience to the Pride and has produced all-conference catchers in two of those seasons.
Prior to joining the Pride staff, Quinn enjoyed a successful stint with the Long Island University Blackbirds in 2011. LIU posted a program record 28 wins and qualified for the Northeast Conference Tournament for the first time in 11 years. Under his tutelage, LIU catcher Tyler Jones earned ABCA All-Region and NEC first team honors after batting .425 and recording just three passed balls and six errors in 51 games, and was a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award. Quinn also directed the LIU bullpen to an NEC-leading 13 saves with closer Evan Zerff ranking 20th in the nation in the category. Before LIU, Quinn was the catching and third base coach at his alma mater, Queens College, for two seasons. In addition to coaching at Queen’s, Quinn’s duties consisted of spearheading field and equipment upgrades along with field maintenance, as well as organizing and directing the fundraising efforts for the program. Quinn also serves as the bullpen coach for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League and will be in his second season in that role in 2012 after spending 2009 and 2010 as a player on the team. In 2011 the Ducks led the Atlantic League with 41 saves and won both the first half
and second half Atlantic League championships. In 2009 he was able to learn under the tutelage of Major League Baseball Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, who managed the team that season. Quinn also serves as the coordinator of his own Catching Academy called Catch14- Jamie Quinn’s Catching Clinics. Quinn played two seasons at Queens College, where he was an AllEast Coast Conference selection at first base in his senior year of 2008, helping lead the Knights to their best record in five years. Prior to his two seasons at Queens, Quinn was a standout catcher for SUNY Old Westbury. As a freshman in 2005 he was second on the team in hitting, third in stolen bases, and had a fielding percentage of .996 while committing only one error. That season he earned Rookie of the Year honors and was ranked as the 10th toughest to strikeout in the country. Quinn, who holds a degree in physical education from Queens, has also played professionally with the Windy City Thunderbolts of the Frontier League in 2009.

Hofstra University
2012 OUTLOOK
T
he Hofstra Baseball team returns 22 players and seven position starters from last season’s team and first-year Head Coach John Russo hopes that that experience coupled with a talented group of newcomers will help the team achieve its goal of qualifying for the Colonial Athletic Association Championship. Last season the Pride posted a 15-32 record, but on the positive side many young players gained valuable game experience that should benefit the squad in 2012 and beyond. Here is a position-by-position look at the Pride:
Pitcher Coach Russo feels that the pitching staff is the most talented group assembled at Hofstra in quite some time. Junior David D’Errico, who posted five wins and a 4.48 ERA to lead the team in 2011, anchors the starting staff. D’Errico had one of the best performances by a Pride hurler when he shutout #14 Miami (FL) for six innings and limited the David D’Errico Hurricanes offense to five singles in the Pride’s upset. In a preseason poll of CAA Coaches, D’Errico was selected as the most underrated pitcher in the CAA.
on Long Island and garnered All-New York State accolades. Freshman Dave Jesch should also see time as both a starter and reliever after an impressive career at West Essex High School in New Jersey. A third team All-New Jersey selection, Jesch was 7-2 with a 1.96 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings as a senior. The coaching staff was impressed with Jesch’s physical ability and demeanor on the mound during the fall and feel that he can handle the college game out of the gate. Sophomore Brett Schreiber and juniors Joe Burg, Andrew Barbarino, Cody Normand and Gregg Lettini should see a great deal of action out of the bullpen. Schreiber was solid in his first season of action in 2011 with a 1-0 record and 4.95 ERA in 17 appearances. Burg, one of two left-handers on the staff, has been a workhorse for the Pride in his first two seasons, making 45 appearances in that span. Last season he pitched in 20 games with four starts and was 1-4 on the year. Barbarino was another reliable reliever for the Pride last season, posting a 3-1 record in 16 appearances. Normand was also a steady performer out of the pen in 13 appearances. He did not record a decision, but did hold opposing batters to a .264 average. Lettini pitched in just two games last season, but did well in the fall and during preseason practice to put him in the mix for innings. Sophomore Bryan Verbitsky will take over as the full-time closer in 2011 after sharing the role with the now-graduated Jeff Guthridge in 2011. Verbitsky, who could also play outfield or serve as the designated hitter, was 0-0 with
Newcomer John Tiedemann, a junior transfer from Cuesta College, impressed the coaching staff during fall practice and will likely follow D’Errico in the rotation. Tiedemann was 11-4 in his two seasons at Cuesta and was an All-Western State Conference pick both years. Junior Jared Rogers has been part of the rotation since his freshman campaign and is coming off an injury-hampered season in 2011. He was 1-4 in 10 starts for the Pride as a sophomore, but during his stint with the Okotoks Dawgs summer team Rogers put together a 4-0 record and a 1.55 ERA in six starts during the regular season. The staff hopes that Rogers can replicate his summer success as that would go a long way in firming up the back end of the Pride’s weekend rotation. Sophomore John Schilt, who is healthy after missing the previous season due to injury, is also in line for a spot in the rotation. Schilt, who started his career at St. John’s but left after one semester, was 10-1 as a senior at Clarke High School

9
2012 OUTLOOK three saves and a 3.31 ERA in 17 appearances. He also struck out 16 batters in 16 1/3 innings. He spent the offseason working on his arm strength in order to be able to work consecutive games. Sophomore Everett Keller could also be called upon for bullpen duty or as a spot starter. As a freshman, Keller made 17 appearances with three starts and was 1-2 on the year. Junior John Krause returns after sitting out last season and gives the team a hard-throwing option. Krause was 0-0 with one save as a freshman and averaged more than one strikeout per inning but also struggled with his control. If he can stay in the strike zone, Krause could be a valuable situational righty for the Pride. Junior Gregg Sarra could also see situational work after appearing in seven games last season. Newcomers Matt Holling, Brendan Mulligan and Nick Kozlowski provide additional pitching depth and could see action out of the bullpen. Holling, a junior transfer from Corning Community College, was 3-2 with a 2.00 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 34 innings of work as a senior. Mulligan, the other lefty on the staff, joins the Pride from Chaminade High School on Long Island where he helped the team to CHSAA championships in 2009 and 2011. Kozlowski red-shirted due to injury as a freshman and is working to find the form that made him an all-league selection at Walt Whitman High School on Long Island.
Jared Hammer
Catcher Sophomore Matt Reistetter, a third team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection in 2011, returns to handle the catching duties. Already one of the top defensive catchers in the league, the coaching staff is looking for him to make a jump offensively this season and improve upon his .270 average and 13 RBIs from a year ago. Fifth-year senior Kevin Flynn will serve as Reistetter’s back-up and the two will likely handle designated hitter duties when not catching. Flynn, who redshirted last season, started 38 games in 2010 and batted .281 with three home runs and 18 RBIs. Junior Mike Beers is the third catcher on the roster and Coach Russo feels that if called upon, he could step into the position and do well.
Infield Matt Reistetter
10
What the Hofstra infield lacks in depth, it makes up for in talent. The loss of senior Joe
Perez to injury at the end of fall practice, as well as some unexpected transfers after last season threw a monkey wrench into things and leaves the team with only five infielders on the roster. But all are talented and should be able to handle the job this season. Junior Jared Hammer returns to man first base and bat cleanup after a breakout season in 2011. Hammer started 38 of 42 contests and ranked second on the team with a .358 average and 25 RBIs. In addition to his offense, Hammer is one of the better defensive first basemen in the league and made just one error in 364 chances last season. Junior Matt Ford suffered through a sophomore slump in 2011, but Coach Russo thinks that Ford can return to the form he exhibited as a freshman when he batted .311 with 27 RBIs en route to CAA All-Rookie honors. Ford, who was selected as the top infielder in the CAA in a poll of the coaches, will move from his familiar spot at shortstop and man second base this year. Junior transfer Dalton Rouleau will take over at shortstop after spending two seasons at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California. Rouleau was an honorable mention All-Western State Conference selection in 2011 after compiling a .301 average, six doubles, five triples and 14 stolen bases. He will give the Pride speed atop the order and is also a solid glove at short, winning a Western State Conference Gold Glove Award in 2010. Senior T.J. Thomas will make the move from the outfield to third base in Perez’s absence. Thomas has experience at first base and did play at third in one game last season, so the position is not entirely new to him.
Hofstra University
that saw him earn first team all-conference honors after leading the team with a .382 average, 16 doubles, 28 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. Named one of the top outfielders and one of the best outfield arms in the CAA, Poma is shifting over to right field after playing center in 2011. Nyman was a teammate of Rouleau’s at Allan Hancock College where he was a two-time AllWestern State Conference selection and a WSC Gold Glove Award winner. He led his team in batting last season with a .329 average and also added a team-high 20 stolen bases. Jackson was a pleasant surprise for Hofstra last season, batting .341 with 18 RBIs. Jackson did not play for the first nine games before debuting as an in-game replacement in game 10 with a 2-for-3 performance. He then cracked the starting lineup in the 11th game of the year and was a fixture in the lineup for 23 of the final 30 games. Jackson has bulked up a bit and the coaching staff is expecting a jump in his power
T.J. Thomas
The coaches feel that Thomas’ natural athleticism will help him and that he will grow more familiar with the position as the season progresses. In addition to filling in for Perez at third, Thomas will also be looked upon to take over some of the offensive load as well since Perez was the Pride’s top power source last season with nine home runs. Thomas batted .271 with eight doubles, one triple and 16 RBIs in his first season with the Pride. When Thomas transferred from San Diego State, there were high expectations and the coaching staff feels that as he enters his final season Thomas is ready to meet, if not exceed, them.
numbers in 2012. Junior Taylor Stuart and freshman Michael Ferranti are also in the mix for outfield work. Stuart played in 28 games last season and made 12 starts. He will give the Pride valuable speed off the bench after stealing five bags in 2011. Ferranti was a second team All-Long Island selection at Chaminade High School as a senior after batting .360 and leading the CHSAA in hits.
Junior transfer Austin Nyman is slated to start in centerfield, but could also play a middle infield spot if needed. However, Coach Russo feels that the outfield defense is at its best with Nyman patrolling centerfield.
Outfield
Danny Poma
The starting outfield shapes up to be senior Danny Poma in right, Nyman in center and sophomore Kenny Jackson in left. Poma, a preseason All-CAA selection, is coming off a junior season

Students find pride and purpose at Hofstra, through small classes, a faculty whose primary concern is teaching, cutting edge technology, extensive library resources, internships, and active and compelling educational programs that appeal to their interests and abilities. The Hofstra community is driven, dynamic and energetic, helping students find and focus their strengths to prepare them for a successful future. In its relatively short 76-year history, Hofstra has established itself as a world-class institution of higher education and cultural enterprise. Each academic year, the Hofstra campus and the programs offered grow and change to meet the demands of our students and our community. Hofstra opened in 1935 as a commuter school with all classes and offices housed in one building. Since those early days, Hofstra has evolved into an international institution with a student body hailing from 50 states and territories, and 72 countries around the world. The beautiful campus is an accredited arboretum with 115 buildings on 240 acres. There are approximately 4,000 students living on campus, and Hofstra offers them and all students an extensive array of academic and social activities. Additionally, Hofstra’s close proximity to Manhattan means that students have easy access to the wondrous cultural, social and career offerings of the city. While the campus and its offerings have changed, what has remained consistent throughout the years is the sense of community on campus, the eagerness of our students to learn and the commitment of the Hofstra faculty and administration to provide a challenging education that encourages the pursuit of lifelong learning. The Colleges and Schools of the University are: Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Frank G. Zarb School of Business, School of Communication, School of Education, Health and Human Services, Maurice A. Deane School of Law, School for University Studies, Honors College, Hofstra University Continuing Education and Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University. Bachelor’s degrees are offered in about 150 areas of study. Graduate degrees are offered, including Ph.D., Ed.D., Psy.D., Au.D., J.D., and M.D. degrees, advanced certificates and professional diplomas, in more approximately 160 programs of study.

Hofstra joined with North Shore-LIJ Health System in announcing plans to establish a medical school on the University campus in October 2007. The new school, which welcomed its first class in July 2011, is the first allopathic (MD) medical school in Nassau County and the first in New York State since 1963. In October 2011 the Commission on Presidential Debates announced that it had chosen Hofstra University for the site of its October 16, 2012 Presidential Debate, which will be in the “town meeting” format. The Commission on Presidential Debates, a nonprofit, nonpartisan corporation, has sponsored and produced every presidential and vicepresidential debate since 1988. Hofstra University hosted the third and final presidential debate of the 2008 election cycle, between then Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain, on October 15, 2008. In 2011 Hofstra announced that it would launch a School of Engineering and Applied Science with a co-op education program that will partner with a network of industry leaders to offer students substantial work experience before they graduate. The new school, set to open in September 2012, will combine and expand the University’s existing Engineering and Computer Science departments to develop a curriculum that emphasizes high-tech research, practical work experience and inter-disciplinary study, integrating resources and faculty from other parts of the institution, including the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and the Frank G. Zarb School of Business. Hofstra’s School of Communication is one of the largest, most advanced non-commercial television facilities in the East. Students take classes and work in Dempster Hall, a sophisticated television production/post-production facility with two broadcast-quality studios and control rooms; two advanced online video edit suites; two Avid non-linear digital editing systems and several cuts-only video work stations. Two satellite dishes are available with one dish providing special news feeds for the broadcast journalism room, which also has access to Associated Press, Lexis-Nexis and Dow Jones services. In addition, the facility is capable of broadcasting student-produced programming to the entire campus on our
Hofstra University
own cable channels. Also located here is the University’s radio station (WRHU/88.7-FM), audio production studios, a film/video screening room, film editing rooms, a computer laboratory, a speech performance studio and a large dance studio. Hofstra’s C.V. Starr Hall offers academic facilities that are among the most technologically advanced in the nation. Every seat in every classroom allows students direct access to the Internet and Hofstra network, including the resources of Hofstra’s Axinn Library. Hofstra’s growing computer facilities offer extensive high-tech training opportunities. There are computer terminals throughout the campus for student and faculty use, with more than 750 PC, Macintosh and UNIX workstations available in labs and classrooms. Hofstra hosts more than 500 cultural events annually, bringing thousands of scholars, dignitaries and other participants to campus. More than 200 musical and dramatic performances take place on campus each year. The University recently completed a year-long celebration of its 75th anniversary, complete with a concert, academic convocation and cake, several conferences and signature events which brought together students, faculty, alumni and community. In October 2008 the eyes of the world were on Hofstra for the final presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. The debate was a transformational moment for the University, highlighting the achievements of our students and faculty and their engagement in the political process. Leading up to the debate, students and the entire community were engaged by the year-long Educate ’08 program, almost 150 lectures, conferences, and events focused on the issues, history and politics of the presidency, followed by Define ’09, which looked at the first year of his presidency. The University continues to host important political events, such as the New York State Gubernatorial Debate in 2010. The Hofstra Museum, which houses one of the largest art collections in the metropolitan area, coordinates approximately eight exhibitions annually and offers exhibition areas and an extensive outdoor sculpture collection, with 75 pieces. The Hofstra Museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums – one of only 94 universities in the nation and one of six in New York to hold that distinction. Hofstra also has six theaters, a student newspaper, a lively student center, a recently renovated recreation center and numerous athletic facilities, including the 13,000-seat James M. Shuart Stadium and the 5,046-seat David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Hofstra also has an indoor, Olympic-sized (eight lane, 50-meter) swimming pool, one of the largest such facilities in the New York metropolitan area.

In 2010-11 four Pride teams advanced to postseason play with women’s soccer and men’s lacrosse reaching the NCAA Tournament as at-large selections. In addition, Hofstra hosted the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals in 2009 and 2011, setting a James M. Shuart Stadium attendance record in 2011.
JACK HAYES Hofstra University Director of Athletics
J
ack Hayes is in his eighth year as director of athletics at Hofstra University in 201112. Hayes was appointed by Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz as the University’s director of athletics on October 4, 2004. Hayes came to Hofstra after serving as an associate director of athletics at the University of Connecticut for three years. Hayes, the eighth director of athletics at Hofstra, leads a department that includes 17 Division I teams, 90 coaches and administrative staff members and 350 student-athletes. Hayes’ proven expertise in enhancing academic and athletic success of studentathletes, strategic planning, fund-raising, marketing, university relations, facility enhancement, budgetary management, and NCAA compliance complements Hofstra University’s athletic department in its quest to further enhance its athletic program, and assist Hofstra’s student-athletes both on and off the field.
32
Hayes has placed a significant emphasis on fund-raising during his tenure. Pride Club membership reached all-time highs, both in terms of the number of contributors and funds raised as the organization topped the $1 million mark for the three consecutive years. In addition, Hofstra Athletics signed its largest corporate sponsorship deal in department history when it partnered with W.B. Mason in 2010. In 2011 Hofstra announced a 1.5 million dollar commitment from lacrosse alumnus James C. Metzger ’83, the largest gift in Hofstra Athletics history. Resources generated through fundraising efforts have been used to enhance programs and facilities available to student-athletes. Recent initiatives include the construction of the W.B. Mason Pride Lounge on the lower level of the Mack Sports Complex, baseball’s Quinn Family Grandstand and the Fried Family StudentAthlete Development Center on the second floor of the James M. Shuart Stadium Building. Other recent renovations include locker rooms, the wrestling room, athletic training rooms in Margiotta Hall and the Physical Education Center, the basketball media room in the Mack Sports Complex, a press box at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium, replacement of the turf at James M. Shuart Stadium and the construction of the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. In 2006 Hayes reintroduced the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame after more than a 50year absence, inducting five classes since that time. He also led an effort to retire the uniform numbers of prominent Hofstra student-athletes with 20 jersey retirement ceremonies held during the 2008-09 academic year.
Active on a national level, Hayes served on the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Committee from September 2006 to September 2008. In September 2010 he was appointed to the NCAA Leadership Council, which is an advisory body to the Division I Board of Directors. Hayes came to Hofstra with more than 14 years of athletic administration experience, including management positions at four Division I institutions – Connecticut, Fordham, St. John’s and Fairfield. Hayes received a master’s degree in education in 1992 with a concentration in sport management from the University of Connecticut. He holds a bachelor’s degree (1989) from Providence College, where he was a member of Providence’s lacrosse team. He was also awarded a certificate of completion in 2001 from the Sports Management Institute, Consortium of the Universities of Michigan and Texas. A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Hayes graduated from the Providence Country Day School where he lettered in football, basketball and lacrosse. He was inducted, as a member of his high school basketball team, into the Providence Country Day Athletic Hall of Fame in October 2004. In October 2010 Hayes became a two-time member of Providence Country Day’s Athletic Hall of Fame when he was inducted along with the rest of his high school lacrosse team. Hayes resides in East Northport, New York, with his wife Bridget, daughter Katie (9), and sons Matt (6), Tommy (3) and Michael (1).

ATHLETIC ACADEMIC SUPPORT
H
ofstra University is committed to the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. The University views participation in intercollegiate athletics as benefiting the student-athlete in an educationally enhancing experience beyond any other opportunity available. Hofstra also realizes the time commitment made by student-athletes and has committed the facilities and resources to support all students. The University Tutorial Program (UTP) provides free tutoring in every subject area to any Hofstra student. Students are able to obtain up to 1 1/2 hours of individual tutorial assistance per week for up to three courses. They are also able to utilize the various help labs on campus, which specialize in providing assistance in writing, business and QM, and biology and chemistry. In addition to this service, student-athletes are assigned an academic advisor, through the Center for University Advisement, who helps address the various needs of student‑athletes. The academic advisor emphasizes four areas in their efforts to ensure the academic success of Hofstra’s student-athletes. Area one is academic counseling. Services are provided in the areas of academic planning, career planning, personal counseling, and campus and community referrals. The advisor also meets with prospective student‑athletes, at the coach’s request, to share the many benefits of a Hofstra University education. Area two is academic advising. The academic advisor serves as the primary advisor for first-year and undecided student-athletes, and also assists upperclassmen who have declared a major. Area three is academic monitoring. The advisor monitors the academic progress of student‑athletes to ensure compliance with Hofstra University, NCAA and conference regulations. The advisor’s regular communication with the faculty and coaches provide opportunities for early intervention should academic difficulties arise. Area four is study halls. The University Tutorial Program supports athletic study halls by providing tutors in various subjects as necessary. The academic advisors also assess the needs of individual student‑athletes to provide the most effective study environment. The assessment tool administered by the Center for University Advisement is also used to provide various enrichment seminars for the student‑athletes such as time management, writing skills, campus resources, and surviving the college transition. In 2010 The Fried Center for Student-Athlete Development was opened on the second level of the James M. Shuart Stadium Building. The center houses the offices of the Student-Athlete Services Staff, as well as a large computer lab with printer access for use by Hofstra student-athletes, a quiet study area with wireless internet access and two group study/tutor rooms with power point access and white boards.

SPORTS MEDICINE/ATHLETIC TRAINING
T
hrough a comprehensive athletic training program, Hofstra University student-athletes are provided excellent health care during their time at the University. A coordinated effort between the University Health and Wellness Center, the Athletic Department and outside health care providers ensures every student-athlete the best medical attention possible. University student-athletes have direct access to a myriad of health care services. Managing the coverage of every practice and competition event is Hofstra University’s athletic training staff, which is led by ninth-year Head Athletic Trainer Evan Malings and features six full-time athletic trainers and numerous student athletic trainers. The athletic trainers provide injury management, rehabilitation and treatment to the entire Athletic program. Utilizing three state-of-the-art athletic training rooms, these professionals work tirelessly to ensure the safe participation of Hofstra’s student-athletes and to return injured athletes to play quickly and safely. Supporting the athletic trainers is team physician Dr. Michael Yorio. Dr. Yorio, a physician with Pro Health Care, Inc. in Lake Success, New York, is in his third year on Hofstra’s medical team. Yorio is an internist with specialized training in sports medicine. He earned his undergraduate degree at Villanova University, and received his medical degree from the SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse. Yorio previously served as a sports medicine fellow with the University of Maryland Orthopedics. Prior to that, he was a resident physician in internal medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Yorio was named the Director of Player Medical Services for the 2008 U.S. Open Tennis Tournament in Flushing, New York, and is on the medical staff for the New York Islanders. He also worked as a team physician for the University of Maryland from 2003 to 2005. Hofstra University sponsors a fully accredited, highly competitive undergraduate degree program for athletic training majors, in which Hofstra student athletic trainers participate in all aspects of the health care system.

he Pride call University Field, located on Hofstra’s North Campus, their home. University Field is centrally located between two of the most frequented sites on campus, the Hofstra Fitness Center and the Mack Sports Complex. It is also just 25 yards from the Colonial Square residential complex. University Field has undergone major renovations in recent years. This past offseason, the fences were moved back and raised in certain places. In 2010 the Quinn Family Grandstand was constructed behind home plate. The 400-seat grandstand was made possible by the leadership and generosity of Hofstra baseball alumnus Bruce Quinn, class of 1986. It features chair-back seating, two entrance ramps, handicap-accessible seating and a press box. Other recent improvements include a new drainage system and the installation of

“Competition Turf ” by Edel Grass. The artificial grass surface, which is similar to what is used at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was installed by Landtek of Amityville, New York. Having a turf infield gives the Pride greater flexibility in playing during inclement weather and allows for greater use during the summer months. New fences were installed along the right field and left field lines, and in 2006 the field received a new scoreboard in right centerfield. During the summer of 2004, the outfield warning track was resurfaced with crushed gravel for better playability and drainage. In 2003 the existing dugouts were replaced with sunken dugouts, measuring 70 feet in length, with protective fencing. University Field has dimensions of 322 feet down the left field line, 382 to centerfield and 337 down the right field line. The fence in centerfield is 30-feet high, while the rest of the fence is 20-feet high.

THE COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
T
he Colonial Athletic Association continues to build on its reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences both athletically and academically.
The CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 22 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2010-11, more than 1,900 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference had 21 teams in 12 different sports receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the latest Academic Progress Report released in 2011. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA conducts championships in 23 sports. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 2010-11, 25 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 50 studentathletes received All-America honors in 13 different sports. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with two teams – George Mason (2006) and VCU (2011) – advancing to the NCAA Final Four over the past five years. Three CAA teams earned NCAA Tournament berths for the first time in 2011 as conference champion Old Dominion was joined by VCU and George Mason. VCU knocked off USC, Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and top-seeded Kansas, while Mason defeated Villanova. The Rams were ranked No. 6 in the final ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll, which was the highest ranking ever for a CAA team. In 2006, George Mason captured the nation’s imagination by becoming the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach the Final Four, posting victories over Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the way. Six CAA women’s basketball teams advanced to postseason play in 2011. James Madison represented the conference in the NCAA Tournament after capturing its second straight conference championship. Delaware, Drexel, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion and VCU participated in the WNIT, with the Seahawks advancing to the second round. ODU, which won an NCAA-record 17 straight CAA titles from 1992-2008, boasts three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) and was national runner-up in 1997.

The conference also excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981. At least two women’s soccer teams have advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in three of the past four seasons and William & Mary gave the CAA a team in the final 16 of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship for the sixth time in the last nine years. In men’s cross country, William & Mary advanced to the NCAA Championship for the 12th straight year and finished 19th overall. In the pool, Towson’s Meredith Budner finished as the runner-up in the 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle at the 2011 NCAA Championship and received All-America honors along with George Mason’s Ashley Danner. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship in the past decade. The CAA has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship in nine of the last 14 years and has had at least 12 players selected in the eight of the last nine Major League Baseball drafts. The conference also boasts numerous All-Americans in lacrosse, tennis, golf, track and field, women’s lacrosse and wrestling. CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs that have been established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, academic resource centers and computer labs. In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions were awarded academia’s most coveted distinction – the Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University, received the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of economics and law at George Mason University, shared the Nobel Prize in economic sciences. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005.

HOFSTRA IN THE COMMUNITY
T
he Hofstra Baseball program is extremely active in the Long Island community, lending itself to a variety of charitable and educational causes.
The team is actively involved with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and the Long Island Special Olympics. The team holds clinics to teach the game and to spend time with each group. The team also worked with the Floral Park Youth Council in conducting a baseball clinic this past December. Through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, the team “adopted” Colin Conaty, a 5-year old boy who is a brain cancer survivor. The team welcomes Colin and his family to games each season and spends time with him off the field as well. Colin has throw out the ceremonial first pitch before home games. This past fall the Pride took part in the Shake and Rake program, sponsored by the Office of Off-Campus Living and Commuting Student Services. Student-athletes and coaches visited homes in the Hempstead and Uniondale communities to provide yard work assistance to local residents. The Pride took a trip to the 1in9 Cancer Facility, in Hewlett, NY, this past fall and helped in a variety of ways, including raking leaves, cleaning up the grounds, moving boxes and helping to organize items in an effort to help to make the facility, which hosts daily meeting for cancer patients, more accessible. The team has also raised money for and participated in the American Cancer Society’s Walk for a Cure at Jones Beach, as well as lending its support to Long Island Cares food drives. Members of the baseball team recently visited Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre. Student-athletes met with several elderly patients in the rehabilitation center of the hospital, conversing with recovering patients and sharing a few stories. On the educational side, team members are frequent participants in reading day initiatives at local elementary schools.

All calls must be made collect or direct dial from the radio station to University Field.
