Head Coach Bill Edwards
B
ill Edwards has completed 23 seasons as Hofstra University Head Softball Coach, and he has been the architect of a program that has grown to national prominence. As a result of his success with the Pride, he was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Hall of Fame in December of 2009.
Edwards has led Hofstra to the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament in the 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2010 seasons, and helped the Pride capture a remarkable 11 straight conference tournament titles from 1998-2008, which is an NCAA Division I record for softball. His career record stands at 806-376-3 in 22 seasons, ranking him in the top 25 in NCAA history in career winning percentage and making him one of only 19 active coaches with 800 career wins. In each of the last 20 seasons under Edwards, the Pride has won either a regular season or a postseason conference title, including the 11 straight tournament championships, breaking the previous record of nine straight conference titles set by Massachusetts from 1995-2003. This past season, Edwards guided Hofstra to a 40-13 record and was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Coach of the Year, the fourth straight season he has earned that honor. A year ago, Edwards guided Hofstra to a school record-tying 45 wins in 2010, as the Pride won the CAA regular season title, swept through the CAA Tournament, and advanced to the NCAA Regional finals with two wins over No. 14 Oklahoma State. Hofstra took third-ranked (and eventual runner-up) Arizona to 12 innings in the regional finals before falling 10-6. The Pride also earned 45 wins in 2008, including two at the NCAA Regionals in Hempstead as it advanced to the regional finals for the third time. The Pride finished with a 45-13 record, while winning the Colonial Athletic Association regular season and postseason championships, earning Edwards the CAA Coach of the Year award. He also won the CAA Coach of the Year honor in 2009 after leading Hofstra to the regular season title with a 14-3 mark in conference play. Prior to its 45 wins in 2008, the
6
previous school record of 43 was set in 2005, when Hofstra reached the NCAA Regional finals at Alabama with a 2-1 win over Arizona State. The year before, he led the Pride to the 2004 NCAA Regional finals at Stanford University, where the Pride won four games and fell just one win shy of reaching the Women’s College World Series. Hofstra has won 14 NCAA Tournament games since 2003, including victories over Penn State, Nebraska, Auburn, Stanford, Oklahoma State and Arizona State, while defeating five pitchers who earned All-America honors during their careers. While the last decade has been especially noteworthy on a national level, the Hofstra Softball program has also displayed consistent excellence over his 22-year career. Edwards and company have garnered 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, including six straight from 2003-08. Edwards, who has been a part of 23 straight winning seasons at Hofstra, coached the Pride to a #21 ranking in the final 2004 NCAA Division I Softball Poll, and a #20 ranking in the final 1994 poll. He has also led the Pride to #1 rankings in the Northeast Region Poll in 1993, 1994, 1997 and 2000. Edwards has been named the Regional Coach of the Year 10 times in his career (1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008). His players have also earned All-America honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association five times, including twice by Crystal Boyd (1993, 1994) and once apiece from Alicia Smith (2000), Lisa Ciavardini (2000) and Amanda Hallaway (2003).
Hofstra University
During the 2000 season, Edwards and the Pride set a then-school record with 42 wins, marking the third time that they had reached the 40-win plateau. Hofstra also won their third consecutive America East Championship and earned their second straight automatic bid to NCAA Regionals, where they defeated Louisiana-Lafayette before being eliminated 2-1 by seventh-ranked LSU. In 1995, Hofstra’s first season in the North Atlantic Conference, Edwards led the squad to a schoolrecord 41-21 mark, the North Atlantic Conference Championship and a berth in Hofstra’s second NCAA Tournament. For his efforts, Edwards was selected as the North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year and Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. Edwards was also named the East Coast Conference Coach of the Year (1994) earlier in his career. Edwards came to Hofstra from Commack High School where he coached softball for nine years. During his tenure at Commack, his teams compiled a 118-61 record and reached the Suffolk County Class A playoffs in seven of those nine years. His 1988 squad captured the Suffolk County championship and the Long Island championship, and finished third in the New York State Tournament. Since 1986 Edwards has also served as head softball coach for the P.S.I. Couriers, an Amateur Softball Association (ASA) summer team. His 1987 team captured the Mid-Atlantic region championship and finished fifth in the national tournament, which marked the first time a Long Island team had competed in the national tournament. The P.S.I. Couriers also finished second in the region in 1986 and third in 1988 and 1989. He is also a past president of the Suffolk County Softball Coaches Association. Edwards, a teacher in the Commack School District from 1967 through 1999, worked and coached at John F. Kennedy Junior High School, Wood Park Elementary School and Commack High School. He served two stints as freshman football coach at Kennedy Junior High School from 1972 through 1976, and 1979 and 1980, and was also the freshman baseball coach from 1975 through 1980. When he moved on to Commack, Edwards served as offensive coordinator from 1981 through 1983. During those three years, Commack won three league titles, two conference championships and one Suffolk County championship. In 1993 he served as head football coach at Commack. In addition, Edwards also served as head ice hockey coach at Iona College from 1968 through 1979. At Iona, his teams posted a 174-5814 record and captured four Metropolitan Collegiate championships. In 1988 Edwards was inducted into the Iona College Sports Hall of Fame. Edwards and his wife, Janie, have two grown daughters, Shari, who played NCAA Division I softball at Northern Illinois University and coached at Hofstra, and Karen, a licensed practical nurse. Edwards received a bachelor’s in physical education from Northern Michigan University in 1967 and a master’s from the University at Stony Brook in 1975. The Edwards family resides in Nesconset, New York.

Associate Head Coach Larissa Anderson
L
arissa Anderson is in her 11th year on the coaching staff at Hofstra and her eighth as associate head coach. She has helped the Pride to eight CAA Tournament championships and seven NCAA Tournament appearances in her 10 seasons on the staff. She has also been part of 14 NCAA Tournament game victories over the last nine years, including four in 2004.
Her efforts have resulted in the Hofstra staff being named the Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) five times (2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008). Anderson works with the Hofstra pitching staff and handles pitch-calling duties from the Hofstra dugout. During her 10 years, she has helped Hofstra achieve a record of 382-173-1, including a school record 45 victories in 2008 and 2010. In 2010 Anderson was a big factor in the progression of then-freshman Olivia Galati, who tied the school record for wins with 26 and was the CAA Pitcher and Rookie of the Year. Galati would go on to set the program record for wins (29) and strikeouts (348) during the 2011 season to repeat as CAA Pitcher of the Year. She was also instrumental in the development of Kayleigh Lotti, who holds the Hofstra career and strikeout record, and was a three-time CAA Pitcher of the Year. Anderson also coached Callie Osborne to CAA Pitcher of the Year honors in 2004 and 2005. In addition, Lotti (four times) and Osborne (twice) and Galati have been named to the NFCA All-Region team under Anderson’s tutelage. Another pitcher who flourished under Anderson was Adrienne Clark, who developed a reputation as one of the top big-game pitchers in the country during her time with the Pride. Clark, who was not recruited as a pitcher, finished her career with a 5-1 lifetime record in the NCAA Tournament, including three solo shutouts and one combined shutout. Clark had a shutout streak of 31 straight innings as a starter in NCAA Tournament play in the 2003 and 2004 seasons, the longest such streak since Nancy Evans of Arizona had 38 straight shutout innings in 1998. In 2008 the pitching staff of Lotti, Courtney Oliver, Joanna Kralowetz and Sara Michalowski won 45 games, posted a 1.28 earned run average, which is the second lowest mark in program history, and held opponents to a .128 batting average. In 2007

the staff, which included Lotti, Oliver and Kralowetz combined to post 41 victories and a team ERA of 1.86, which was just the second time in six seasons that the team ERA was under 2.00. The staff total of 460 strikeouts bettered the old mark of 343 by 117, as Lotti rang up 319 punch-outs on the year. Anderson’s work with Kralowetz stands out as the sophomore was not recruited to pitch and emerged as Hofstra’s go-to reliever, posting an 11-3 record, a 1.78 ERA with 61 strikeouts and four walks in 63 innings pitched. Anderson is also a frequent speaker at camps and clinics around the country. At the 2011 NFCA Convention, Anderson and Head Coach Bill Edwards were featured speakers and presented: “Defensive Strategy: Is Your Team Really As Prepared As You Think?” The national convention included more than 1,300 participants (mostly coaches) from youth levels, high school, travel teams and NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA institutions. Prior to coming to Hofstra, Anderson served as an assistant coach for two seasons at C.W. Post, where she helped the Pioneers to a combined 75-33 record, including a school record 42 wins during the 2000 season. She assisted in all facets of the program at C.W. Post and was in charge of coaching the pitchers and catchers. Her efforts helped the Pioneers to the 13th best team earned run average in Division II (1.11) in 2001. She was also part of a C.W. Post staff that received the Northeast Region Division II Coaching Staff of the Year award from the NFCA in 2000. Anderson also served one season as an assistant coach at Gannon University in 1998, after being named a regional All-American outfielder in 1997. She graduated from Gannon in 1997 with a bachelor’s of science degree in therapeutic recreation. No stranger to the Hofstra athletic community, Anderson spent the 200001 academic year as an administrative assistant to the women’s basketball program in addition to her coaching duties at C.W. Post. Anderson resides in Levittown, New York, with her husband of 10 years, Patrick, a former coach in the Kansas City Royals organization who served three seasons as head coach of the Hofstra Baseball team before returning to pro ball in 2012.

Assistant Coaches
C ou rtn e y Oliver Assistant Coach
F
ormer Hofstra pitcher/designated player Courtney Oliver, a 2008 graduate, is entering her second season an assistant coach with the Pride in 2011. She will assist the Pride with both pitching and hitting, after having a standout career in both areas during her playing days at Hofstra. After graduating from Hofstra in 2008, Oliver spent one year as an assistant coach at Monmouth University in 2009 and one year at Boston University in 2010. While at Boston University, she helped the Terriers to a 35-22 record, an America East Conference championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, which saw the Terriers capture a 10-4 upset win over nationally ranked Massachusetts. Her Monmouth team in 2009 finished with a 26-18-1 record, after finishing 19-22-1 the previous year. A native of Swansea, Massachusetts, and a graduate of Coyle and Cassidy High School, Oliver had a big impact in her playing days at Hofstra, as she helped the Pride to four straight CAA championships and NCAA Tournament berths. She had numerous big hits in her career, including a pinch-hit RBI single in the CAA title game against Towson as a freshman, a three-run home run in the CAA title game against Georgia State as a sophomore (when she also earned the pitching victory), and a towering walk-off two-run homer in the 11th inning of the CAA championship round against James Madison as a senior.
A d r ie n ne Clark Assistant Coach
A
drienne Clark, one of the top pitchers in Hofstra University history and a member of Pride teams that won four straight Colonial Athletic Association titles, joins the coaching staff in 2012 as a volunteer assistant. Clark comes back to Hofstra after spending three seasons (2009-11) on the staff at Columbia University, where she worked with the Lions pitching staff and outfielders. She also served as an associate professor of physical education at Columbia. Clark also spent three years as an assistant at Delaware after graduating from Hofstra in 2005. During her tenure at Columbia, Clark guided a pitching staff that saw its team ERA shrink from 4.95 the season before she arrived to a 3.01 mark in 2011. She also coached a pair of her pitchers, Maggie Johnson and Prophet Gaspard, to All-Ivy League accolades in 2011. At Delaware. Clark served as the Blue Hens’ pitching coach. She also worked with the Delaware outfielders, ran individual hitting sessions, oversaw the Blue Hens’ recruiting process and served as the team’s first base coach. Clark made an immediate impact during her first season
2012 Softball
In addition, Oliver helped the Pride to a dramatic 5-4 win over Penn State in the 2006 NCAA Regionals at Hofstra Softball Stadium, when she had two doubles and three RBI, including the game-winning RBI double in the eighth inning. The Penn State game was the first regional contest that Hofstra had hosted since the 1993 campaign. During her senior season, Oliver showed her dominance as both a hitter and a pitcher, as she led the CAA in conference games in both RBI (27) and earned run average (5-0, 0.24). Her performance helped the Pride complete its run of 11 straight conference championships, which is an NCAA Division I record for softball. She ended her senior season with 40 RBI overall and a 10-3 record and a 1.12 ERA in the pitching circle. A two-time first-team All-CAA selection, Oliver currently ranks 10th in school history in career runs batted in with 117 (despite not becoming a full-time starter until her sophomore season). She also won 32 career games in the pitching circle, including two no-hitters, and ranks eighth in school history with 258 strikeouts. One of her two no-hitters came in a road game against LIU, which snapped an 18-game winning streak for the Blackbirds. In addition, Oliver and the Class of 2008 remain the winningest class in school history, finishing with a four-year record of 166-64. The 45 wins the Pride earned in 2008 also remains tied for the school record for a single season with the 2010 team. Oliver, who earned a degree in marketing from Hofstra, is currently pursuing her master’s in journalism. at Delaware in 2006, as the Blue Hens led the Colonial Athletic Association with a 2.03 earned run average. During her playing career for the Pride, Clark helped lead the team to four straight CAA regular-season and postseason championships and three NCAA Regional appearances. She helped the team win 148 games during those seasons, including a school-record 43 victories in 2005. Hofstra went 8-4 in the NCAA Tournament over her final three seasons and was one of only 12 teams in the nation to win at least two NCAA Tournament games in 2003, 2004, and 2005. Clark was a two-time first team All-CAA selection, a three-time CAA All-Tournament selection, and was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Mid Atlantic Region team as a junior in 2004. She developed into one of the best big-game pitchers anywhere in the country, tallying a 5-1 record with one save in NCAA Division I Tournament play over her final three seasons, with four of those wins coming in 1-0 decisions. Clark had a streak of 31 straight shutout innings as a starter in the NCAA Tournament at one point and was named to the NCAA All-Regional team in 2003 and 2004. Clark, a native of Gibsonton, Florida, holds a degree in business administration and marketing and will graduate from Columbia in May 2012 with a master’s in sports management.

2012 Outlook
F
inding a mixture of talent and experience to navigate through a long season can help determine how far a team can go. With seven returning starters and 11 juniors and seniors on the roster, the 2012 Hofstra softball team will be looking to build off an impressive year as it seeks the program’s 13th tournament title in the last 15 years. The Pride returns most of their key players from a team that went 40-13, including 19-1 against the Colonial Athletic Association. Though the lineup retains many of its potent threats, Hofstra will still need to replace top power hitter Sara Michalowski (team-leading 12 home runs and 46 RBIs), catcher Laura Valentino (51 starts) and sure-handed shortstop Trisha Dreslinski, who started all 53 games last season. But the Pride brings back its top-two hurlers in CAA Pitcher of the Year Olivia Galati and senior Erin Wade. Edwards will also have the luxury of starting an upperclassman at every position. The lineup will be fortified by the return of senior infielder Jess Hirschbuhl (.311 average), junior outfielder Tessa Ziemba (.335) and junior designated player D.J. Slugh (.338), who all earned All-CAA first-team honors. Hofstra is coming off its fifth 40-win season in the last seven years, though head coach Bill Edwards said past performance will not adumbrate future success. “It’s a new year with new challenges and last year doesn’t guarantee you anything,” Edwards said. “But we’re all excited for the new season and it should help that we have an experienced team. You can’t coach experience.” Here is a position-by-position look at the Pride heading into the 2012 season:
Pitcher
Olivia Galati
For the third straight year, the 1-2 combination of Galati and Wade will be expected to carry the pitching load. As a sophomore, Galati earned her second consecutive CAA Pitcher of the Year award after going 29-8 with a 1.24 ERA. After winning the league’s pitcher and rookie of the year awards as a freshman, Galati boasts a careerrecord of 55-15 and is coming off a 2011 season in which set a team record for victories and strikeouts (348) while logging 17 shutouts. For her efforts, Galati was named to the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year top-50 watch list for the second consecutive season.
Wade alleviated the pressure on Galati with a stellar 11-5 record and a 2.33 ERA. The duo started every game for the Pride and logged more than 99 percent of the total innings. Wade showed good control, striking out 109 batters against just 32 walks in 104 innings pitched.
10
Erin Wade
“Olivia is the type of pitcher who makes it a little easier on the coaching staff when she’s on her game,” Edwards said. “Erin is throwing the ball really well right now. When you have two quality pitchers, we just have to keep them healthy and they’ll give us a chance to win.” To bolster the pitching staff, Edwards could also turn to 5-10 freshman Dominique Ficara and junior Nicole Osovski. Edwards said Ficara has worked hard to improve from the time she arrived on campus to now and could pick up innings.
Catcher Hofstra lost Valentino to graduation but will still have a veteran to key the backstop position. Courtney Crews, who did not accrue a single error in 33 total chances last year, has developed a rapport with the pitching staff and could be primed for a big season after battling through an injury in 2011. The senior will be expected to shoulder much of the responsibility behind the plate early on but could be spelled by freshman Erin Trippi. The Lyndhurst, N.J. native is getting acclimated to the Division I level and could receive key game experience with Hofstra slated to play 15 games in a 17-day stretch to start the campaign.
First Base
Jess Hirschbuhl
Senior Jess Hirschbuhl is coming off a standout season as the team’s second baseman, where she earned first-team All-CAA honors in starting all 53 games. Hirschbuhl batted .311 and posted a .451 on-base percentage. The Pride hopes her offensive production will translate to a new position as Hirschbuhl will move to the right of the infield and take over the first base spot from Michalowski. As a senior, Michalowski provided the bulk of the Pride’s power as the only Hofstra player with doubledigit home runs. Hirschbuhl still accumulated 49 total bases and scored 31 runs while helping to turn four double plays. Osovski
Hofstra University
has all been practicing at first and could provide depth as a position player in addition to her talents as a pitcher. Freshman walk-on Danielle Bitts could also compete for time at first.
Second Base With Hirschbuhl moving over, sophomore Tori Rocha will look to establish herself at second base. As a freshman, Rocha appeared in 13 games, including seven off the bench. Edwards said the left-handed hitting Rocha has been working hard and could provide the Pride with a strong arm and good range defensively. At the plate, Rocha will look to use her quickness to generate runs and contribute to a Hofstra offense that out-scored opponents, 272-90, last season.
Rachael Senatore
Shortstop
Krista Thorn
Hofstra lost one of its most aggressive and tough athletes when Dreslinski graduated last year. To replace the shortstop who started all 53 games, the Pride will move senior Krista Thorn from third base to short. Thorn also started every game last season, batting .273 with 19 RBIs.
Third Base Junior Becca Bigler batted .293 with four RBIs last year before a medical red-shirt cut short her season. But in her limited playing time, Bigler showed her prowess at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a RBI in a win over Purdue and 1-for-3 in both games of a doubleheader Tessa Ziemba against Florida State and All-America pitcher Sara Hamilton. Bigler will now be entrusted to be the everyday third baseman.
Outfield On a team where the infield defensive alignment has fluctuated, the outfield should provide the Pride with continuity. Hofstra returns all three of its starters in senior

Michelle Lavagnino and juniors Tessa Ziemba and Rachael Senatore. Ziemba, another All-CAA first-team pick, became the first Hofstra player to have 40 RBI in each of her first two seasons after her game-winning RBI double in the regular season finale against Georgia State (she finished with 44). Lavagnino added depth to the lineup with a .313 on-base percentage and Senatore scored 30 runs and stole six bases. Sophomore Ashley Ainbinder could also work her way into the outfield mix with continued strong efforts during practices. Designated player D.J. Slugh could also see time in the outfield.
Designated Player Junior D.J. Slugh was an offensive catalyst last season, posting a teamleading .479 on-base percentage. In just 74 at-bats, the right-handed hitting Slugh generated 37 runs (17 runs scored and 20 RBIs). The Pride also will look to employ a slew of utility players that can either push established players in practice, fill-in as injury replacements or provide a jolt off the bench while affording the coaching staff the luxury of gaining favorable matchups. Lindsey Reid is coming off a strong fall season but has been setback with a broken hand. She could be valuable utility player who can be slotted into multiple infield positions. Sophomore Colleen Smith has also showed flashes in practice after appearing in 17 games in her first season.
Schedule In addition to a challenging CAA schedule, Hofstra has loaded the non-conference portion with a bevy of contests against well-respected power-conference schools. The Pride will play four team that enter the season ranked in the he USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Preseason Poll. Hofstra will open the season against No. 24 Louisville and will also play Tennessee (14), Michigan (15), UCLA (19) and will also oppose three teams receiving votes in East Carolina, DePaul and Fordham. In CAA play, Hofstra will open league play with a three-game series at defending-conference champion Georgia State. The Pride will also play James Madison, Towson and Delaware on the road and host George Mason, UNC Wilmington and Drexel. “We’re not taking the non-conference game as a preparation for conference play,” Edwards said. “We’re playing all these great teams early to win. We want to come out strong early and win some big games in order to put ourselves in a position to get an at-large bid to the tournament.” “Playing all these top teams early will expose what we have to work on to get better. I think the potential is there for us to be very strong defensively. That’s where we start: pitching and defense.”

In its relatively short 76-year history, Hofstra has established itself as a world-class institution of higher education and cultural enterprise. Each academic year, the Hofstra campus and the programs offered grow and change to meet the demands of our students and our community. Hofstra opened in 1935 as a commuter school with all classes and offices housed in one building. Since those early days, Hofstra has evolved into an international institution with a student body hailing from 50 states and territories, and 72 countries around the world. The beautiful campus is an accredited arboretum with 115 buildings on 240 acres. There are approximately 4,000 students living on campus, and Hofstra offers them and all students an extensive array of academic and social activities. Additionally, Hofstra’s close proximity to Manhattan means that students have easy access to the wondrous cultural, social and career offerings of the city. While the campus and its offerings have changed, what has remained consistent throughout the years is the sense of community on campus, the eagerness of our students to learn and the commitment of the Hofstra faculty and administration to provide a challenging education that encourages the pursuit of lifelong learning. Hofstra joined with North Shore-LIJ Health System in announcing plans to establish a medical school on the University campus in October 2007. The new school, which welcomed its first class in July 2011, is the first allopathic (MD) medical school in Nassau County and the first in New York State since 1963. In October 2011 the Commission on Presidential Debates announced that it had chosen Hofstra University for the site of its October 16, 2012 Presidential Debate, which will be in the “town meeting” format. The Commission on Presidential Debates, a nonprofit, nonpartisan corporation, has sponsored and produced every presidential and vicepresidential debate since 1988. Hofstra University hosted the third and final presidential debate of the 2008 election cycle, between then Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain, on October 15, 2008. In 2011 Hofstra announced that it would launch a School of Engineering and Applied Science with a co-op education program that will partner with a network of industry leaders to offer students substantial work experience before they graduate. The new school, set to open in September 2012, will combine and expand the University’s existing Engineering and Computer Science departments to develop a curriculum that emphasizes high-tech research, practical work experience and inter-disciplinary study, integrating resources and faculty from other parts of the institution, including the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and the Frank G. Zarb School of Business. Hofstra’s School of Communication is one of the largest, most advanced non-commercial television facilities in the East. Students take classes and work in Dempster Hall, a sophisticated television production/post-production facility with two broadcast-quality studios and control rooms; two advanced online video edit suites; two Avid non-linear digital editing systems and several cuts-only video work stations. Two satellite dishes are available with one dish providing special news feeds for the broadcast journalism room, which also has access to Associated Press, Lexis-Nexis and Dow Jones services. In addition, the facility is capable of broadcasting
Hofstra University
student-produced programming to the entire campus on our own cable channels. Also located here is the University’s radio station (WRHU/88.7-FM), audio production studios, a film/video screening room, film editing rooms, a computer laboratory, a speech performance studio and a large dance studio. Hofstra’s C.V. Starr Hall offers academic facilities that are among the most technologically advanced in the nation. Every seat in every classroom allows students direct access to the Internet and Hofstra network, including the resources of Hofstra’s Axinn Library. Hofstra’s growing computer facilities offer extensive high-tech training opportunities. There are computer terminals throughout the campus for student and faculty use, with more than 750 PC, Macintosh and UNIX workstations available in labs and classrooms. Hofstra hosts more than 500 cultural events annually, bringing thousands of scholars, dignitaries and other participants to campus. More than 200 musical and dramatic performances take place on campus each year. The University recently completed a year-long celebration of its 75th anniversary, complete with a concert, academic convocation and cake, several conferences and signature events which brought together students, faculty, alumni and community. In October 2008 the eyes of the world were on Hofstra for the final presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. The debate was a transformational moment for the University, highlighting the achievements of our students and faculty and their engagement in the political process. Leading up to the debate, students and the entire community were engaged by the year-long Educate ’08 program, almost 150 lectures, conferences, and events focused on the issues, history and politics of the presidency, followed by Define ’09, which looked at the first year of his presidency. The University continues to host important political events, such as the New York State Gubernatorial Debate in 2010. The Hofstra Museum, which houses one of the largest art collections in the metropolitan area, coordinates approximately eight exhibitions annually and offers exhibition areas and an extensive outdoor sculpture collection, with 75 pieces. The Hofstra Museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums – one of only 94 universities in the nation and one of six in New York to hold that distinction. Hofstra also has six theaters, a student newspaper, a lively student center, a recently renovated recreation center and numerous athletic facilities, including the 13,000-seat James M. Shuart Stadium and the 5,046-seat David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Hofstra University Director of Athletics The Hofstra Athletic program has flourished under Hayes’ leadership, winning 20 CAA Championships and making 33 postseason appearances, including 25 NCAA Tournaments, since the 2004-05 academic year. In 2010-11 four Pride teams advanced to postseason play with women’s soccer and men’s lacrosse reaching the NCAA Tournament as at-large selections. In addition, Hofstra hosted the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals in 2009 and 2011, setting a James M. Shuart Stadium attendance record in 2011.
JACK HAYES Hofstra University Director of Athletics
J
ack Hayes is in his eighth year as director of athletics at Hofstra University in 201112. Hayes was appointed by Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz as the University’s director of athletics on October 4, 2004. Hayes came to Hofstra after serving as an associate director of athletics at the University of Connecticut for three years. Hayes, the eighth director of athletics at Hofstra, leads a department that includes 17 Division I teams, 90 coaches and administrative staff members and 350 student-athletes. Hayes’ proven expertise in enhancing academic and athletic success of studentathletes, strategic planning, fund-raising, marketing, university relations, facility enhancement, budgetary management, and NCAA compliance complements Hofstra University’s athletic department in its quest to further enhance its athletic program, and assist Hofstra’s student-athletes both on and off the field.
32
Hayes has placed a significant emphasis on fund-raising during his tenure. Pride Club membership reached all-time highs, both in terms of the number of contributors and funds raised as the organization topped the $1 million mark for the three consecutive years. In addition, Hofstra Athletics signed its largest corporate sponsorship deal in department history when it partnered with W.B. Mason in 2010. In 2011 Hofstra announced a 1.5 million dollar commitment from lacrosse alumnus James C. Metzger ’83, the largest gift in Hofstra Athletics history. Resources generated through fundraising efforts have been used to enhance programs and facilities available to student-athletes. Recent initiatives include the construction of the W.B. Mason Pride Lounge on the lower level of the Mack Sports Complex, baseball’s Quinn Family Grandstand and the Fried Family StudentAthlete Development Center on the second floor of the James M. Shuart Stadium Building. Other recent renovations include locker rooms, the wrestling room, athletic training rooms in Margiotta Hall and the Physical Education Center, the basketball media room in the Mack Sports Complex, a press box at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium, replacement of the turf at James M. Shuart Stadium and the construction of the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. In 2006 Hayes reintroduced the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame after more than a 50year absence, inducting five classes since that time. He also led an effort to retire the uniform numbers of prominent Hofstra student-athletes with 20 jersey retirement ceremonies held during the 2008-09 academic year.
Active on a national level, Hayes served on the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Committee from September 2006 to September 2008. In September 2010 he was appointed to the NCAA Leadership Council, which is an advisory body to the Division I Board of Directors. Hayes came to Hofstra with more than 14 years of athletic administration experience, including management positions at four Division I institutions – Connecticut, Fordham, St. John’s and Fairfield. Hayes received a master’s degree in education in 1992 with a concentration in sport management from the University of Connecticut. He holds a bachelor’s degree (1989) from Providence College, where he was a member of Providence’s lacrosse team. He was also awarded a certificate of completion in 2001 from the Sports Management Institute, Consortium of the Universities of Michigan and Texas. A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Hayes graduated from the Providence Country Day School where he lettered in football, basketball and lacrosse. He was inducted, as a member of his high school basketball team, into the Providence Country Day Athletic Hall of Fame in October 2004. In October 2010 Hayes became a two-time member of Providence Country Day’s Athletic Hall of Fame when he was inducted along with the rest of his high school lacrosse team. Hayes resides in East Northport, New York, with his wife Bridget, daughter Katie (9), and sons Matt (6), Tommy (3) and Michael (1).

Athletic Academic Support
H
ofstra University is committed to the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. The University views participation in intercollegiate athletics as benefiting the student-athlete in an educationally enhancing experience beyond any other opportunity available. Hofstra also realizes the time commitment made by student-athletes and has committed the facilities and resources to support all students.
The University Tutorial Program (UTP) provides free tutoring in every subject area to any Hofstra student. Students are able to obtain up to 1 1/2 hours of individual tutorial assistance per week for up to three courses. They are also able to utilize the various help labs on campus, which specialize in providing assistance in writing, business and QM, and biology and chemistry. In addition to this service, student-athletes are assigned an academic advisor, through the Center for University Advisement, who helps address the various needs of student‑athletes. The academic advisor emphasizes four areas in their efforts to ensure the academic success of Hofstra’s student-athletes. Area one is academic counseling. Services are provided in the areas of academic planning, career planning, personal counseling, and campus and community referrals. The advisor also meets with prospective student‑athletes, at the coach’s request, to share the many benefits of a Hofstra University education. Area two is academic advising. The academic advisor serves as the primary advisor for first-year and undecided student-athletes, and also assists upperclassmen who have declared a major. Area three is academic monitoring. The advisor monitors the academic progress of student‑athletes to ensure compliance with Hofstra University, NCAA and conference regulations. The advisor’s regular communication with the faculty and coaches provide opportunities for early intervention should academic difficulties arise. Area four is study halls. The University Tutorial Program supports athletic study halls by providing tutors in various subjects as necessary. The academic advisors also assess the needs of individual student‑athletes to provide the most effective study environment. The assessment tool administered by the Center for University Advisement is also used to provide various enrichment seminars for the student‑athletes such as time management, writing skills, campus resources, and surviving the college transition. In 2010 The Fried Center for Student-Athlete Development was opened on the second level of the James M. Shuart Stadium Building. The center houses the offices of the Student-Athlete Services Staff, as well as a large computer lab with printer access for use by Hofstra student-athletes, a quiet study area with wireless internet access and two group study/tutor rooms with power point access and white boards.

Sports Medicine/Athletic Training
T
hrough a comprehensive athletic training program, Hofstra University student-athletes are provided excellent health care during their time at the University. A coordinated effort between the University Health and Wellness Center, the Athletic Department and outside health care providers ensures every studentathlete the best medical attention possible. University student-athletes have direct access to a myriad of health care services. Managing the coverage of every practice and competition event is Hofstra University’s athletic training staff, which is led by ninth-year Head Athletic Trainer Evan Malings and features six full-time athletic trainers and numerous student athletic trainers. The athletic trainers provide injury management, rehabilitation and treatment to the entire Athletic program. Utilizing three state-of-theart athletic training rooms, these professionals work tirelessly to ensure the safe participation of Hofstra’s student-athletes and to return injured athletes to play quickly and safely. Supporting the athletic trainers is team physician Dr. Michael Yorio. Dr. Yorio, a physician with Pro Health Care, Inc. in Lake Success, New York, is in his third year on Hofstra’s medical team. Yorio is an internist with specialized training in sports medicine. He earned his undergraduate degree at Villanova University, and received his medical degree from the SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse. Yorio previously served as a sports medicine fellow with the University of Maryland Orthopedics. Prior to that, he was a resident physician in internal medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Yorio was named the Director of Player Medical Services for the 2008 U.S. Open Tennis Tournament in Flushing, New York, and is on the medical staff for the New York Islanders. He also worked as a team physician for the University of Maryland from 2003 to 2005. Hofstra University sponsors a fully accredited, highly competitive undergraduate degree program for athletic training majors, in which Hofstra student athletic trainers participate in all aspects of the health care system.

Since the Stadium opened, the Pride has a 248-47 record at home, including 98-10 against CAA opponents. The Stadium, constructed in 2000, provides a fine setting for collegiate softball action. Construction included new sunken dugouts, new outfield sod, a press box on top of the bleachers behind home plate, batting cages next to the dugouts and a bullpen area. Bleacher seating behind home plate, from dugout to dugout, accommodates nearly 1,000 spectators. Field dimensions are 190 feet down the lines and 220 feet to centerfield. Banners commemorating Hofstra’s team achievements are displayed on the outfield fences, while plaques mounted to the facade of the Stadium showcase individual awards won by Hofstra Softball players. In 2011 lights were installed in the Stadium, which will allow for NCAA Regionals to return to campus and provide greater flexibility in scheduling during the regular season. Hofstra Softball Stadium has hosted nine Colonial Athletic Association Championships, as well as NCAA Regionals in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and is also the site of the Catholic League High School Softball Championship. The Colonial Athletic Association
T
he Colonial Athletic Association continues to build on its reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences both athletically and academically.
The CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 22 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2010-11, more than 1,900 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference had 21 teams in 12 different sports receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the latest Academic Progress Report released in 2011. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Atlanta (8), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA conducts championships in 23 sports. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 2010-11, 25 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 50 studentathletes received All-America honors in 13 different sports. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with two teams – George Mason (2006) and VCU (2011) – advancing to the NCAA Final Four over the past five years. Three CAA teams earned NCAA Tournament berths for the first time in 2011 as conference champion Old Dominion was joined by VCU and George Mason. VCU knocked off USC, Georgetown, Purdue, Florida State and top-seeded Kansas, while Mason defeated Villanova. The Rams were ranked No. 6 in the final ESPN/USA Today Top 25 poll, which was the highest ranking ever for a CAA team. In 2006, George Mason captured the nation’s imagination by becoming the first mid-major program since 1979 to reach the Final Four, posting victories over Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut along the way. Six CAA women’s basketball teams advanced to postseason play in 2011. James Madison represented the conference in the NCAA Tournament after capturing its second straight conference championship. Delaware, Drexel, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion and VCU participated in the WNIT, with the Seahawks advancing to the second round. ODU, which won an NCAA-record 17 straight CAA titles from 1992-2008, boasts three national championships (1979, 1980, 1985) and was national runner-up in 1997.
46
The conference also excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981. At least two women’s soccer teams have advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in three of the past four seasons and William & Mary gave the CAA a team in the final 16 of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship for the sixth time in the last nine years. In men’s cross country, William & Mary advanced to the NCAA Championship for the 12th straight year and finished 19th overall. In the pool, Towson’s Meredith Budner finished as the runner-up in the 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle at the 2011 NCAA Championship and received All-America honors along with George Mason’s Ashley Danner. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship in the past decade. The CAA has sent multiple teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship in nine of the last 14 years and has had at least 12 players selected in the eight of the last nine Major League Baseball drafts. The conference also boasts numerous All-Americans in lacrosse, tennis, golf, track and field, women’s lacrosse and wrestling. CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs that have been established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, academic resource centers and computer labs. In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions were awarded academia’s most coveted distinction – the Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University, received the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of economics and law at George Mason University, shared the Nobel Prize in economic sciences. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005.

Hofstra’s Pro and Olympic Players
T
he Pride has produces several players that went on to pursue careers in professional softball or with their national team. Former All-American Crystal Boyd was the first Hofstra player to play pro ball in the United States as a member of the WPSL’s Georgia Pride from 1997 to 1999. Standout pitchers Stacy Jackson and Erin Phillips fulfilled their professional aspirations overseas, as Jackson played in Italy and Phillips in Holland. All-American Alicia Smith and all-star Jen Smith were draft selections in the National Pro Fastpitch league and played for the New York/New Jersey Juggernaut franchise. Danielle Stewart returned to her native Australia following graduation and was a member of the Australian National Team that won the bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

Media Following
H
ofstra’s success on the softball diamond has generated a great deal of media coverage for the Pride. Local newspapers, television and radio stations are frequent guests at the Hofstra Softball Stadium. Hofstra Softball has also been featured in several national publications including Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News, and on the web at ESPN.com. Each season, Hofstra’s student-radio station (WRHU) broadcasts nearly all home games, as well as all CAA and NCAA Championship events.

Hofstra in the Community
T
he Hofstra Softball program is extremely active in the Long Island community, lending itself to a variety of charitable and educational causes. The team has raised money for and participated in the American Cancer Society’s Walk for a Cure at Jones Beach. Hofstra also hosts a Think Pink Day and wore pink jerseys in support of breast cancer research. The team also supports the HEADstrong Foundation, which was founded by former Pride lacrosse player Nick Colleluori. Nick was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and created the foundation to help raise awareness before he passed away.

During the Holiday season the team participates in Operation Christmas Child, a program that provides gifts to needy children and families. The team is also involved with the Big Brother/Big Sister program and the Long Island Special Olympics. The team holds clinics to teach the game and to spend time with each group. The Hofstra Softball program also works with the Women’s Sports Foundation and participates in WSF-sponsored clinics throughout the year. Several times each year, Pride players and coaches speak at schools and softball clinics. The team also participates in a reading program with the Glen Cove Head Start day care program, as well as local elementary schools.
Through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, the team “adopted” Hannah Prokops, a 9-year old girl who was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The team welcomes Hannah and her family to Hofstra games and spends time with her off the field as well. This past fall, the Pride took part in Shake-ARake, going out into the local community to rake leaves for elderly and disabled people. Working with various youth softball leagues on Long Island, the team hosts many groups throughout the season. Teams are invited onto the field during introductions and join the team for the National Anthem.
