HOFS TRA ATHLE TICS 2013-14 ANNUAL REPORT

Gree tings From The Dire c tor Of Athle tics Dear Friends of Hofstra Athletics, Thank you for your support of the Hofstra Pride Athletic Program during this past year. Please know that our student-athletes, coaches and staff deeply appreciate your continued support of our academic and athletic endeavors. While there were many outstanding performances from the past year that you will read about in this annual report, I would like to take this opportunity to highlight a few of the key moments, the first of these being the retirement of long-time Head Softball Coach Bill Edwards. Coach Edwards’ Hall of Fame career speaks for itself, and I thank him on behalf of the entire University community for all of his hard work and efforts during his tenure that transformed the Pride into a nationally-prominent program. I am confident that Larissa Anderson will carry on this tradition of excellence as she takes over as the program’s head coach. I also would like to congratulate the softball, wrestling and men’s lacrosse teams on outstanding seasons. The Pride Softball team won 34 games and earned an NCAA Tournament at-large bid, the 15th NCAA Tournament selection in program history. The wrestling program participated in a new conference this year, the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA), and sent four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, while the men’s lacrosse team won the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season championship. Many Hofstra student-athletes excelled in their respective competitive venues this past year, earning All-America, all-region, and all-conference accolades for their performance, and you will read about them throughout the annual report. Our primary mission is the education of our student-athletes and we are particularly proud of their work in the classroom and in the community. In February nearly 275 student-athletes were honored as Hofstra Scholar-Athletes during an academic recognition ceremony and 18 of those student-athletes compiled a perfect 4.0 grade point average. In addition, the softball team was the recipient of a public recognition award from the NCAA based on their most recent multi-year academic progress rate (APR) which signifies being in top 10% in the nation in their respective sport. During the academic year, student-athletes and coaches from all 17 teams took part in more than 40 community service projects and totaled nearly 3,000 hours of service. Their volunteer efforts were recognized by the Hofstra University Office of Student Leadership and Activities, which awarded Hofstra’s studentathletes two awards at its annual end of the year banquet. Our student-athletes received the Good Neighbor Award for their work during this year’s Shake-A-Rake initiative, as well as the Community Service Event of the Year for their annual Reading With Pride project. The NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinal at James M. Shuart Stadium was a tremendous success. I am sure that many of you were part of the sold-out crowd that witnessed two exciting games in front of the largest crowd ever in Shuart Stadium. Hosting NCAA postseason events is a tremendous opportunity and provides outstanding visibility for the Department of Athletics and Hofstra University. We will continue to pursue NCAA Championship events in the coming years. Hofstra was selected by the NCAA to the host the 2016 NCAA Wrestling Championships along with Madison

Square Garden. We are currently in the planning and preparation stages of this great event. Last October it was announced that a dedicated basketball practice facility would be constructed in the north end of the David S. Mack Physical Education Center, and I am happy to say that the project has been completed. The venue will be a valuable asset for our basketball programs both in our recruiting efforts and in player development. I am very pleased with the new court design for the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. We had many outstanding suggestions from our fan base and we incorporated aspects from a variety of entries into the new design. I would like to congratulate Emily Mansur, who was promoted to head volleyball coach after serving as an assistant last season and our new Head Wrestling Coach Dennis Papadatos. In addition, the department welcomed a variety of new staff members including Associate Director of Athletics for NCAA Education and Compliance Services Ariel “AP” Pesante, Associate Director of Athletics for Development Dino Megaloudis and Joe Staub who was appointed the Pride’s head strength and conditioning coach. Hofstra University Athletics was well represented at a pair of hall of fame inductions this past year as Bill Edwards, James C. Metzger ’83 and Doug Shanahan ’02 were inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame, while Noel Thompson ’04 was inducted into the Downstate New York chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Noel was also honored by the University, along with Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Craig “Speedy” Claxton ’00 at the annual alumni awards dinner. Noel was the Young Alumnus of the Year, while Speedy received an Alumni Achievement Award. Another all-time Hofstra great, men’s basketball alumnus Steve Nisenson ’66, received the Alumnus Award from Hofstra Hillel in June. The Hofstra Pride Club completed another highly successful year and I thank all those who continue to support our student-athletes, coaches and staff. The generosity of the members of The Hofstra Pride Club continues to allow the university to support the various academic and athletic initiatives in place for our Hofstra studentathletes. Special thanks to Pride Club President Colonel E. David Woycik, The Hofstra Pride Club Board of Directors and every Pride Club member who all share in our successes. I also wish to thank Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz for his continued support of the Department of Athletics, as well as his leadership of our outstanding University. Due to the efforts of President Rabinowitz and so many dedicated members of the University community, this was another memorable year for our students and the entire Hofstra community. Thank you again for your continued support of Hofstra Athletics as we all look forward to continued success in the classroom and in the competitive venues.

Sincerely, Jeffrey A. Hathaway Vice President and Director of Athletics Hofstra University

Those are just some of the adjectives that can be used to describe the Hall of Fame coaching career of Bill Edwards, who retired in May from his position as head coach of the Hofstra Softball program after 25 years and 928 victories. But Edwards broke his career down to three stages and had a different view. “When I first took the job, I would say challenging, demanding and interesting were the adjectives I would use to describe it. There were many challenges to deal with at the start in terms of getting things in place. I was still teaching full-time and the demands from both jobs were high, but as a first time college coach it was truly an interesting time period. After settling in, you move on to exciting, exhilarating and inspiring. The program started winning and you get caught up in all the emotion that comes with success. Now at the tail end of my career, I would say that gratifying and satisfying is what describes it. I can look back at what we have accomplished and it is very fulfilling to me.” Taking over a program that was below .500 and playing on a makeshift softball field before he arrived, it is difficult to believe how far Hofstra Softball has come in the last quarter century. But Edwards had a clear vision for the program. “I knew I wanted to coach at the college level for the last 15 years of my high school coaching career,” he explained. “I wanted to coach against the best coaches, coach the best athletes and teach players to be the

best they could be. I knew what I wanted to achieve and I just hoped that Hofstra could help me with the resources to make it possible. After a year or two, then-President James M. Shuart and former Director of Athletics Jim Garvey came to me with a five-year plan and once I saw the commitment they were making to me, I knew that all the things I envisioned for this program could come to fruition.” It did not take long for Edwards’ plan to fall into place as in just his fourth season, Hofstra made its first NCAA Championship appearance by earning an at-large bid in 1993. That was the first of 15 NCAA Tournaments, which also includes a Super Regional berth in 2012 and four other regional final appearances. He led Hofstra to 18 postseason conference championships during his tenure and transformed the Pride into a nationally respected power. Edwards’ extraordinary run of success led to his 2009 enshrinement in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Hall of Fame. Having posted a winning season in all 25 campaigns and coming off three consecutive NCAA Championship appearances, it appeared that Edwards was showing no signs of slowing down and he said he probably could have coached for at least four more years. But he says that the timing was right to hand the reigns of the program to longtime Associate Head Coach Larissa Anderson. “The timing was perfect to turn it over to Larissa, who I respect and admire so much,” said Edwards. “She is a great ambassador of the game and is one of the top coaches and teachers in Division I. More importantly, she has carved out her own identity as a coach and is not just Bill Edwards’ assistant. The program is solid and it is just her turn. I am thankful that Director of Athletics Jeff Hathaway, who I respect a great deal and wish I had worked with longer, was agreeable to a seamless transition to Larissa.” Over the course of 25 seasons and more than 1,300 games, Edwards has had more than his fair share of memorable moments. Yet he will not single out any specific ones as career highlights. “Every memory means a great deal to me,” he said. “It would be very easy to say that this NCAA game or this certain player stands out, but that wouldn’t be fair. Every player that has worn a Hofstra uniform has made a contribution to the success we have experienced over the years and every game has meant something as well.”

While Edwards is retiring from his head coaching duties, don’t expect to find him relaxing on a beach somewhere. While he expects to get in a few more rounds of golf than normal, he makes it clear that he is not retiring from softball entirely. “I still plan on being active on a national and regional level,” said Edwards. “I enjoy the teaching aspect of the game and still think I have a lot to offer. I recently coached a college all-star team against Team USA and I look forward to other opportunities like that to arise. Plus I will be around Hofstra as much as Larissa wants me to be.”

faces of the Pride CHRIS GRIEBS CH Chris Griebsch became one of the most accomplished players in the history of the Hofstra Men’s Soccer program with the forward ending his career as Hofstra’s alltime assist leader en route to capturing the Colonial Athletic Association’s Player of the Year honors in 2013. Chris, who was a three-time All-CAA selection and Hofstra’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2013-14, became the first player in school history to crack the 30-assist mark in a career that spanned 2010 to 2013 and finished with 32. The native of Dessau-Rosslau, Germany, led the league in assists in his last three seasons. Q: What has life after Hofstra been like so far? CG: It has been a big change so far. I already miss Hofstra and can’t believe it is over. Now the real world starts and it is exciting to see what comes next. It is a big challenge but Hofstra provided me with the necessary tools. So hopefully I can use them in the right way. Q: In your senior year you were named the CAA Player of the Year and a nominee for the Soccer News Net College Boot Award as the Player of the Year. How would you characterize your improvement as a player from your first day on campus to the time you completed your eligibility at Hofstra? CG: Of course I improved in certain elements of the game such as technique, pace and set pieces. But the most crucial element I improved at is the consistency during a game and an entire season. That had been a weakness of mine but the coaches helped me a lot to improve, for which I’m very thankful.

Q: You earned recognition for your onfield accomplishments, but you also were named to the NSCAA’s Scholar All-America team and won the CAA’s Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete Award. What were the steps you used to successfully divide your time between athletics and academics? CG: Hofstra provides you with many opportunities to become a successful athlete as well as student. The practice schedule is known before you select your classes, which helps not to overlap classes and practice. On top of that, student-athletes have study hall. You have the chance to get your course work done in a good environment. During away trips with the team there is always the opportunity of studying on the bus or at the hotel. So there is always time for both soccer and school. Furthermore the advisement office, in my case led by Michelle Spaterella and Rachel Peel, was an enormous help. They assisted me in selecting the right classes and keep you on track in order to graduate on time. They also stayed in contact with my professors to make sure I was fulfilling all the requirements. If there were any problems, they always tried to help correct them. But obviously you have to do your work and study what the professor asks for in order to receive good grades. Q: You’ve been able to play soccer in Germany and the United States. After living extensively on multiple continents, how were you able to adapt to different cultures? CG: The people at Hofstra made it very easy. It is a big family, just as Coach (Richard) Nuttall always told me. Coaches and teammates always gave me the feeling of not being alone. Whenever I was homesick or had a problem, I had many people to talk to. All of that makes it very easy to adapt to a new culture. Q: As someone who has a business background, how valuable was it to study and play so close to New York City? CG: It was very valuable. New York City showed me what is possible in the business world. The city offers everything you could ever ask for. It shows that you need to keep working hard in order to reach your goals. No matter how successful you are there is always something you can improve in. There is always someone who is better than you. It has always been a big motivation. Furthermore it offers you opportunities of incredibly important contacts. The network you can build up in that area can help you enormously. Q: Is their anything else you would like to say about your time at Hofstra? CG: I would like to use this opportunity to thank my coaches, the academic advisement staff, the entire athletics department staff and my teammates for the past four years! Thank you very much, Hofstra!

RACHAEL SENATORE Rachael Senatore wrapped up a stellar career as a member of the Pride softball team this past May. After missing the 2013 season, her senior year, due to injury, Rachael returned to Hofstra in 2014 as a graduate student and turned in another solid season in helping the Pride earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship.

staff and teammates that kept me focused and grounded. I owe them all of my success as I always have even before the injury. The year off the field allowed me to appreciate that even more. Q: You hit better than .300 in three of your seasons and scored at least 30 runs in every year in which you were a regular starter. How much pride do you take in having such a consistent career?

A dedicated student, Rachael holds a degree in English from Hofstra and is on track to graduate in May 2015 with an MBA degree. Rachael was a member of the Dean’s List and a five-time recipient of the Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner’s Academic Award. This season she was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District I Team and to the CAA All-Academic team.

RS: I take great pride in what my teammates and I have accomplished since I have been part of the Hofstra Softball program. Being considered a consistent player is very gratifying as that has always been a goal of mine. But being part of the program at all and having such meaningful and deep relationships that flourished from my successes as well as my failures is something I hold with greatest pride. Successes that are measured in numbers, although something to be very proud of, only scratch the surface of what every player accomplishes while being part of this program.

On the field Rachael was a member of four NCAA Regional squads and one NCAA Super Regional team. She was a first team All-CAA selection and a first team National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Northeast Region pick in 2012. Q: This will be the first year in a half-decade that you will not be a studentathlete on the Hofstra Softball team. Has it been a strange adjustment not getting ready for a new season?

Q: Your last season was also the last season for Bill Edwards, who announced his retirement at the end of the 2014 season. How much did Bill’s coaching influence you on and off the field and what are your feelings on both of you ending your Hofstra careers at the same time?

RS: It is an understatement to say that the summer thus far has been an adjustment period for me. By July of previous summers, I was taking classes on campus and in full swing getting refocused for the fall season. Although I would be remiss to say that I don’t miss the thrill and camaraderie that accompanies the training, I am enjoying my summer home with my family. Q: Besides spending five seasons with the softball program, you earned your degree from Hofstra and you’re pursuing your MBA in finance. What has Hofstra meant to you as both a student and an athlete? RS: The past five years of my life have been amazing on all levels. There really are no adequate words to fully describe what the experience has meant to me. I will be forever grateful to the Hofstra Softball program for the opportunities it has given me athletically and academically as well as for giving me the tools necessary to be successful in both.

RS: Coach’s influence reaches far beyond the acquired skills and accomplishments we attained between the lines. His goal as a teacher is to prepare the studentathletes that come through the program for life after softball. The structure he provided me athletically and the lessons he taught me just by talking to me about his experiences set me up for success. I feel lucky to have gotten to know him so well over the five years I spent at Hofstra, and I wish him nothing but the very best and all the happiness life has to offer. Although he will be retiring in an official capacity, if I know him as well as I think I do, he will forever be teaching and forever be learning.

Q: You came back from missing a full season to hit .301 in 2014 and led the team in runs. Were you always confident that you would be able to return so strong as you were going through the rehab process? RS: Rehab after the injury was a long and intense process. I would be lying if I said I never had doubts. It was very easy to dwell on how far I still had to go to get back to the form I was in before the injury. But I was blessed to have such an amazing support system in my coaching

faces of the Pride MELANIE (MOORE) CARPEN TER Melanie Moore Carpenter ’95, MBA ’98 is a founder and partner of i-advize Corporate Communications, Inc., an investor relations agency based in Manhattan’s financial district. Founded in 2000, i-advize’s clients include some of the largest publicly traded companies in Latin America.

bond over the years was strong. I made some amazing friends and met my husband of 15 years in what was love at first sight in the Student Center.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in international business, Melanie then earned an M.B.A. with a concentration in finance from Hofstra’s Frank G. Zarb School of Business. She began her career as a market analyst at IFR-Latin America before becoming a consultant at Thomson Financial IR, an investor relations products and services company. Melanie directed the division’s largest account, Brazilian oil concern Petrobras, and helped create its international investor relations program in preparation for the company’s global IPO and NYSE listing.

MC: My degree in international business gave me a well-rounded education, but it was my MBA in finance that really launched my career. Investor relations draws mainly from finance and accounting principles, but also requires strong marketing and writing skills. What I learned in both degrees from Hofstra, combined with my Spanish fluency was the ideal match for what I’m doing today.

Melanie was a member of the Hofstra Women’s Basketball team from 1991-95 and served as a team captain. After missing her freshman season due to a knee injury, she played in 70 games and averaged four points and 3.5 rebounds per game. A Somerville, New Jersey, native, Melanie now lives in Monmouth Beach, New Jersey, with her husband of 15 years, former Pride men’s basketball player Matt Carpenter ’96, and their two children, Vincent (11) and Madeleine (8). Q: What types of services does i-advize provide? MC: We are the only investor relations agency in the world that focuses exclusively on the Latin American market. We’ve helped more than 100 of the largest companies in Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Chile, Argentina and Panama communicate their financial story with investors all over the globe. Q: What is your current position and what does it entail? MC: As co-owners of a small business, my partner and I help each other run the operation, work on client accounts, try winning new business and develop our team of consultants. Our offices are adjacent to the New York Stock Exchange but we travel all over Latin America to visit our clients.

Q: How do you feel your Hofstra education prepared you for life after college?

Q: As a member of the basketball team, were you able to take any lessons learned on the court with you into the business world? MC: I definitely learned the meaning and importance of staying relevant. As a student-athlete you not only have to earn your degree, but you have to stay in the best shape possible, figure out your role on the team and motivate your teammates. Otherwise, you’re just going through the motions. I try to stay vital to my clients, and manage my time to enjoy my family and activities that keep me healthy. Q: With you and your husband Hofstra alumni, do you ever make it back to campus to visit? If so, what do you think of all of the changes that have happened at the University since you graduated? MC: We’ve been able to attend a few alumni events and basketball games since we left. We were absolutely floored when we saw the Mack Sports Complex. Having played our entire careers in the PFC, we had only dreamed of having facilities like Hofstra has today. The success of both basketball programs today is something we’re both really proud of. No matter what, I’ll forever be a Flying Dutchwoman.

Q: What is your most satisfying career moment and what career goals do you still want to achieve? MC: We had the honor of organizing this year’s Mexico Day at the New York Stock Exchange and I got to ring the Opening Bell with some of my favorite clients. We have clients that have been with us since before their IPOs and continue to rely on us to communicate with investors for many years. I hope we can continue the consistent growth we’ve enjoyed alongside the capital market growth of the region. Q: What are some of your fondest memories of Hofstra? MC: I am most proud of playing Division I basketball, which was one of the happiest times of my life. We had a very diverse team but our

Jon Cooper Hofstra University alumnus and former Pride lacrosse player Jon Cooper ’89 completed his first full season as head coach of the National Hockey League’s Tampa Bay Lightning in 2013-14, leading the team to 46 wins and second place in the Atlantic Division. He was named head coach in March 2013 and led the team for the final 16 games of the 2012-13 season. Cooper played four years of lacrosse for the Pride and also played one season on the Hofstra Hockey club team. He tallied 74 goals and added 25 assists for 99 points during his Pride lacrosse career from 1986 through 1989 and was part of East Coast Conference (ECC) championship teams as a junior and a senior. At the time of his graduation, his 74 career goals ranked fifth all-time at Hofstra while his 99 points was ninth. Cooper became the eighth head coach in Lightning history and had been in the Tampa Bay system since 2010. He was the head coach of the Norfolk Admirals, Tampa’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, from 2010-12 and the Syracuse Crunch in 2012-13. In two seasons with Norfolk, he led the Admirals to a 94-44-18 regular season record and a 17-7 mark in the playoffs. He was the AHL Coach of the Year in 2012 after leading the Admirals to the Calder Cup championship. After a franchise affiliation shift to Syracuse, Cooper led the Syracuse Crunch to a 3918-8 record, the best in the AHL, before leaving for Tampa Bay. He began his professional coaching career with the St. Louis Bandits of the North American Hockey League and then led the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) for two seasons. In Cooper’s first season in 2008-09, Green Bay saw a 50-point improvement from the previous year and set a USHL record for largest single-season improvement. He was rewarded with the 2009 and 2010 USHL General Manager of the Year Awards, as well as being named the 2010 USHL Coach of the Year after winning the Clark Cup. Cooper, a native of Prince George, British Columbia, earned a law degree from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan after graduating from Hofstra with a degree in management. He and his wife Jessie are the parents of three children, twin daughters, Julia and Josephine, and a son, Jonathan. Q: What are some of your memories of attending Hofstra? JC: The most prominent thing that stands out to me is the friendships I made. I think when you go so far away from home to college as I did you look for people to lean on and those friendships were never more evident than when I came back to Long Island as coach of the Lightning for the first time. The amount of people from my college years that came to the game and sat right behind our bench was amazing. They were just cheering deliriously for our team and were there in support of myself. They were a bit older, but still the same charismatic people I went to school with and it meant a great deal to me have them there and showed what great friends I made through Hofstra. Q: How did Hofstra prepare you for your future? JC: The one thing about going to Hofstra was that is was my transition from going from a boy to a man. When you go to college you are no longer under your parent’s supervision and being 3,000 miles away from home forced me to grow up. Hofstra treated you as an adult and you had to do adult things. You had go to class and do the work and it was your responsibility to do so. It was not only academically, but athletically as well. I learned to balance the many

demands on my time during my career at Hofstra and have carried that with me throughout my life since. Q: How did you get involved in coaching hockey? JC: I had played hockey growing up and after getting my law degree, I was a defense attorney in Lansing, Michigan, in 1999. The judge I was working with at the time had a son who was a high school senior. His coach had left and knowing my background, he asked if I would be interested in coaching the high school team. I guess the rest is history! I always had a passion to get back into hockey. Part of the reason I went to law school was to become an agent, but I found I liked being on the team side better. So when the opportunity to coach came up, it was a great situation. I coached with a friend of mine, Pat Murray, and we won the championship. It started out being law practice 75 percent and coaching 25 percent and within a few years it was the opposite. That is when I decided to end my law practice and pursue coaching full time. Q: You have reached the top of your profession (coaching in the NHL) in a relatively short time. What other career goals would you like to accomplish? JC: The thing I really enjoy about coaching is how things change every year. I enjoy taking 23 players and sculpting them into one by the end of each season. The question I always ask myself is can we take this group and win a championship. I think that is what has helped me get to the NHL in a relatively short amount of time. Now that I am in the NHL the goal is to win the Stanley Cup. That 35-pound silver trophy has been around for a century and Coach Cooper (r) and Coach Seth Tierney when you get your named etched on it I don’t think there is anyone who has ever stepped onto a frozen pond that did not dream of that moment. Since I have been in professional hockey, it is something that has driven me and I wouldn’t want anything less that that to happen. Q: You recently came back to Hofstra when Tampa played at the Nassau Coliseum. How did it feel to be back on campus and what were your thoughts on how the University has evolved since you graduated? JC: It was amazing how much has changed, but it is still the same. I think that is what stuck in my head the most. I could not believe the facilities, especially at lacrosse. When I played we had one tiny locker room downstairs and we shared everything else. To see what they have currently, I was blown away with just how state-of-the-art and top-notch everything is. Then we walked around campus and the wave of emotion that hit me when we went into the dorms or Hofstra USA or the cafeteria was incredible. It brought back a flood of memories. Sure things are updated and more in tune with 2014 instead of 1989, but it felt the same to me. It was just really cool to walk around and have those great memories again.

Pride Productions also produced several nonathletic events for the University.

pride Cup The Hofstra University Men’s Tennis team won the 2013-14 Pride Cup Competition, scoring 11,300 points, which is the third-highest score recorded since the inception of the Pride Cup. It is also the highest score by a men’s athletic team. “I congratulate members of the men’s tennis team on winning the 2013-14 Pride Cup,” said Hofstra Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway. “The Pride Cup Competition is something that all of our student-athletes look forward to and strive to win, but the men’s tennis program put forth a great effort on the court, in the classroom and in the community, as well as supporting their classmates at athletic events all season long to post an impressive victory.” The Pride Cup began in 2008-09 and has studentathletes from each of Hofstra’s 17 teams compete in a variety of categories. Teams earn points not only through athletic achievements, but academic success, support of fellow student-athletes, community outreach, campus involvement and career and personal development. Previous winners of the Pride Cup are: women’s cross country (2012-13), wrestling (2011-12), women’s soccer (2010-11) and softball (2009-10 and 2008-09).
