2012-13 HOFS T RA uni versi ty depart men t of ATHLE TICS annual repor t
Dear Friends of Hofstra Athletics,
A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
Welcome to the 2012-13 Hofstra University Department of Athletics Annual Report. Thank you for your support of the Pride during this past year, which has made 2012-13 one of the most successful in the recent history of our outstanding athletic program. Hofstra athletic teams represented the University in fine fashion both in the classroom as well as on their respective fields of play. Baseball student-athlete Joe Burg was a finalist for a Rhodes Scholarship in 2012, just the second Hofstra student to earn that distinction. Joe’s commitment and dedication to his studies is to be admired and serves as an example of how one can achieve success in both academics and athletics during their careers at Hofstra. As you will see in the annual report, there were many outstanding performances by members of the Pride. Four student-athletes – Olivia Galati (softball), Shante Evans (women’s basketball), Shaun Foster and Tyler Botte (men’s soccer) garnered All-America honors in their sports, while 29 student-athletes were named to All-Colonial Athletic Association teams. Kelsie Wills (volleyball) and Olivia both earned National Player of the Week accolades in their sports. One of the finest examples of a true student-athlete, Olivia shined both on the softball field and in the classroom. She closed her playing career as one of the best to ever wear the Hofstra uniform and her outstanding classroom work garnered her a multitude of academic accomplishments, including first team Academic All-America honors. Shante truly left her mark at Hofstra as in addition to being a three-time All-America selection, she departs as the program’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, along with holding the CAA mark for career rebounds.

Joe was also one of five student-athletes, joining Melissa McCarthy (field hockey), Steve Bonanno (wrestling), Jill Maier (women’s lacrosse) and Olivia, who were named Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports. Joe would also be named the overall CAA Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, marking the second time that a Pride student-athlete was an overall CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Joe, Olivia and Steve also were selected as first team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, marking the second time three Hofstra student-athletes earned first team Academic All-America honors in the same year. In addition, 13 student-athletes earned 4.0 grade point averages in 2012-13 and 174 were recipients of the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Award. Four Pride teams – women’s soccer, volleyball, wrestling and softball – captured Colonial Athletic Championships in 2012-13 to advance to the NCAA Championships. The men’s soccer and women’s lacrosse teams advanced to the championship game of their respective CAA tournaments as well. Hofstra Athletics welcomed several new staff members in 2012-13 including Men’s Basketball Coach Joe Mihalich and Director of Tennis Lauren Leo. Among other important hires throughout the year, the return of one of our finest basketball student-athletes – Craig “Speedy” Claxton – as our Special Assistant to the Head Men’s Basketball Coach stands out as a highlight. Several capital improvements took place during 2012-13 as new FieldTurf was installed in James M. Shuart Stadium, Hofstra Soccer Stadium and baseball’s University Field. The new turf provides our student-athletes with state-of-the-art playing surfaces and adds value to facilities that are used year-round for many different purposes.

The Hofstra Pride Club completed another highly successful year and I thank all those who continue to support our student-athletes and staff. The generosity of the members of the Hofstra Pride Club continues to allow the University to support our various academic and athletic initiatives for the Hofstra student-athletes. Special thanks to Pride Club President Colonel E. David Woycik, the Pride Club board of directors and each and every Pride Club member. I wish to thank Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz for his continued support of the Department of Athletics, as well as his leadership of our outstanding University. The 2012-13 year once again saw Hofstra thrust into the media spotlight with the hosting of the presidential debate. Due to the efforts of President Rabinowitz and so many dedicated members of the University community, this was another memorable event for our students, student-athletes and the entire Hofstra community. Thank you again for your continued support of Hofstra Athletics as we all look forward to continued success in the classroom and in the competitive venues. Sincerely,

ALLAMERICANS Tyler Botte
Association and All-Met selection, Evans led Hofstra in scoring with 16.1 points and rebounding with 11.5 boards per game. She is the CAA’s all-time leading rebounder with 1,348 and had the most double-doubles (69) of any active Division I player before capping her prominent college career, leading to the retirement of her No. 30 jersey at the Mack Sports Complex. Named to both the John R. Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy watch lists, Evans set numerous program records this season, including the Pride’s all-time scoring record with 2,116 points. She became the first 2,000-point scorer in program history at Georgia State on Feb. 10.
Ty le r B o t t e Men’s Soccer
Shaun Foster
Botte was named to the men’s soccer AllAmerican second team by the College Sports Madness website. Botte helped Hofstra advance to the championship game of the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. He guided Hofstra to an 11-6-4 record, marking the first double-digit win total for the Pride since 2006. Botte was a key part of a defensive unit that helped Hofstra register seven shutouts and out-scored opponents, 32-23. He also emerged as one of the league’s best twoway players, becoming a major offensive weapon on set pieces. He scored five goals and tallied four assists for 14 points, tying him for third on the Pride in total points. His five goals ranked third on the team and his four assists placed him in a tie for second on the squad.
S ha u n F o s t e r Men’s Soccer
Foster became the third Hofstra Men’s Soccer player to earn NSCAA All-America honors and the first since Michael Todd garnered second team honors in 2006. Ed Gaffney, an honorable mention pick, was the program’s first selection in 1969. A junior who has exhausted his NCAA eligibility, Foster was the CAA’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year recipient, making him the league’s first three-time winner of the defensive award. He was also named to the league’s all first-team in 2012. Foster was a key part of a Hofstra defensive unit that allowed only 21 goals in 19 contests and posted seven shutouts, including four in CAA play. Offensively, Foster contributed two goals (both game-winners) and an assist as the Pride reached the CAA Championship game.
Shante Evans
Olivia Galati
O li v ia Ga la t i Softball
Galati was named Second Team All-America by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association to become the Pride’s second two-time All-America selection. She was the program’s first-ever first team selection in 2012 and joins Crystal Boyd, who was a second team pick in 1993 and a third team selection in 1994, as the Pride’s only twotime All-Americans. A four-time Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year and All-CAA first team selection, Galati finished her senior campaign 40-12 with a 1.42 ERA and a .769 winning percentage. She was the only pitcher in the country to post a 40-win campaign in 2013 and led the nation in shutouts (22), while ranking second in strikeouts (395). Galati led Hofstra to a 46-13 record and a berth in the NCAA regional championship game against No. 6 Missouri. She finished her career with a 129-34 record and 1,410 strikeouts, holding program records for wins and strikeouts. Three Hofstra University athletic facilities –James M. Shuart Stadium, Hofstra Soccer Stadium and University Field – were the beneficiaries of turf replacements during 2012-13. Shuart Stadium, the home of Hofstra’s lacrosse teams, received a new FieldTurf Revolution surface.
The existing turf surfaces at Hofstra Soccer Stadium and University Field were replaced with new state-of-the-art FieldTurf products. The infield at University Field is now fully turfed as the base cutouts and home plate area were outfitted with FieldTurf as well. The LandTek Group, Inc. of Amityville, New York, oversaw the installation of all three turf replacement projects.

FA CI LI TY U S AGE The replacement of the artificial surfaces at James M. Shuart Stadium, Hofstra Soccer Stadium and University Field not only benefit Pride studentathletes and coaches, but many other constituents as well. Hofstra facilities, including the Mack Sports Complex, Mack Physical Education Center and Hofstra Softball Stadium, are in high demand by professional organizations, high schools and sports camps.
In September 2012 the New York Cosmos announced its return to professional soccer as a member of the North American Soccer League (NASL) and are playing its home games at Shuart Stadium. The team first played at Hofstra in the original NASL in its second and third years of existence -- 1972 and 1973. The New York Lizards of Major League Lacrosse have played at Shuart Stadium for several years, including five home games during the 2013 season. Several local high schools hold their home football and lacrosse games at the stadium, as well as Nassau County
and Long Island Championship contests. One of the biggest events at Shuart Stadium each year is the Empire Challenge football game to benefit the Boomer Esiason Foundation and youth football in the New York metro area. The game features the Long Island AllStar team against New York City All-Stars. High school softball, baseball, volleyball and soccer also conduct events at Hofstra facilities. The Hofstra University Summer Camp, one of the largest camps in the nation, also has use of athletic facilities during the summer months.

SANDY RELIEF EFFORTS During a fall semester that saw Long Island Hofstra student-athletes sent a message to all Long Islanders affected by one of the worst storms in history, following Super Storm Sandy Pride athletes answered the call to serve their neighbors. Students made trips to towns all over Long Island, willing to assist with anything they could do. From cleaning out and repairing homes, to organizing clothing and food drives, students worked tirelessly to help those in need. Student-athletes organized more than 10 events to aid Long Island families suffering in the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy. The men’s lacrosse team made four trips to towns on the south shore of Long Island to assist community members in getting their homes back in order. Pride softball team members made special trips to Long Beach and helped one of their own, whose home was severely impacted by the storm. They also helped neighbors in clean-up efforts, and combined with the U.S. Armed Forces in organizing and distributing donated goods to families in need. The women’s lacrosse program, led by senior Taylor Albright, ran a clothing and supply drive. All collected items were donated to Long Island families who had lost so much during the storm. Student-athletes from men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, women’s cross country and field hockey volunteered with a Hofstra University clothing drive, as well as with the Island Harvest Food Bank. The women’s basketball team made special trips to the Interfaith Nutrition Network and assisted in serving meals, as well as organizing clothing and supply items. On November 18, 2012, more than 100 student-athletes met at James M. Shuart Stadium, with a message to all Long Islanders to remain strong during the difficult times so many were experiencing. The students brought down canned food items, which were all donated to Island Harvest. They gathered at mid-field and held up large letters, spelling out, “Stay Strong Long Island”. All students not holding a letter were flexing their muscles in support of the message. Photographs were taken and through the help of Island Harvest, shared with Long Island families along with the donated food items.
