Jenkins Named To Naismith Midseason Top 30 List: Senior guard Charles Jenkins was named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Top 30 List, it was announced on Feb. 11 by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Jenkins was one of only three players on the list from mid-major conferences. The Naismith Trophy is presented to the top player in NCAA Division I. Tops In The Nation: Senior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, N.Y.) has more career points than any other active player in the nation with 2,463 though Feb. 27. He has a 56-point lead on second-place Andrew Goudelock of College of Charleston. Jenkins Fourth In Scoring: Senior guard Charles Jenkins currently ranks fourth in the country this season with 23.2 points per game (through Feb. 27). Last year, Jenkins ranked 20th in the country with 20.6 ppg.

Top 15 NCAA Division I Scorers (through Feb. 27) Name, School Jimmer Fredette, BYU Marshon Brooks, Providence Adrian Oliver, San Jose St. Charles Jenkins, Hofstra Andrew Gonzalez, Houston Baptist Andrew Goudelock, Charleston Kemba Walker, Connecticut Xavier Silas, Northern Illinois Anatoly Bose, Nicholls St. C.J. McCollum, Lehigh Norris Cole, Cleveland State Klay Thompson, Wash. St. Nolan Smith, Duke Donald Sims, Appalachian St. Orlando Johnson, UCSB

Model Of Efficiency: As impressive as his scoring numbers have been this season, senior guard Charles Jenkins has shown remarkable efficiency in accumulating them. Jenkins is shooting 52.8 percent from the floor through games of Feb. 27, while no other player in the top 15 in scoring is even shooting 50 percent (see right). He averages 1.59 points per shot and has the highest field goal percentage of any guard in the country ranked in the top 100 in scoring (17.0 ppg and up), while he has been held to less than 18 points only twice all year (30 games). Jenkins also averages 4.8 assists per game, and is one of only three players who lead their conferences in both scoring and assists, as he helped Hofstra to its highest ever finish in the CAA (14-4, tied for second). Second Half’s The Charm: Senior guard Charles Jenkins’ numbers go up substantially in the second half of games, when he averages 13.4 points on 58.2 percent shooting (see right). He had 23 of his 32 points in the second half of a big home win over CAA regular season champion George Mason on Jan. 5 (shooting 7-8 from the floor after halftime). When he scored a career-high 40 points at Binghamton on Dec. 8, 31 of his points came in the second half alone, including Hofstra’s last 15 of regulation to force overtime. The one exception to the rule was against No. 8 North Carolina on Nov. 18, when 20 of his 24 points came in the first half (on 9-11 shooting). Jenkins Moving Up Scoring Charts...: Former guard Steve Nisenson (196265) held the Hofstra scoring record for 43 years (2,222 points) before it was finally broken by Antoine Agudio (2004-08), who finished with 2,276 points. However, Agudio didn’t get to hold the record for nearly as long as Nisenson did, as Jenkins passed him on Jan. 29 against Drexel. Jenkins now has 2,463 points, ranking second in CAA history behind only David Robinson, who scored 2,669 points during his four years at Navy. Jenkins also needs just 37 points in the postseason to reach the 2,500-point plateau, something only 60 players in NCAA history have accomplished. ...And Other Charts Too: In addition to his scoring numbers, senior guard Charles Jenkins also ranks among Hofstra’s all-time leaders in assists, steals and three-pointers as well. He currently ranks fifth in assists (474), fifth in steals (210), and fifth in three-pointers (174). He also has 543 rebounds and is one of only two players in school history (along with Speedy Claxton) to record 2000 points, 500 rebounds and 400 assists. Jenkins Wins Second Haggerty: Senior guard Charles Jenkins won his second Haggerty Award as the top player in the New York metropolitan area last April at the annual Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association banquet, becoming only the ninth player in the 77-year history of the award to win it more than once. Only two players have won three Haggerty Awards: Jim McMillian of Columbia (1968-70) and Chris Mullin of St. John’s (1983-85), and Jenkins can join that exclusive list if he wins the honor again this year.

What They’re Saying About Charles Jenkins: “Jenkins is the real deal. He could start for any team in the country. I’m so glad I don’t have to coach against him again this year. He is a special, special player.” – Florida Atlantic coach Mike Jarvis “I could not be more impressed with Hofstra’s Charles Jenkins. The 6-3 guard is an absolute man on the floor and he is clutch. Jenkins is the real thing and could play anywhere.” – Jay Bilas, ESPN.com “Jenkins is really special as a scorer. He’s such a strong kid. It’s really a team effort to defend him.” – Western Kentucky coach Ken McDonald “Hofstra’s Charles Jenkins is one of the hidden gems in the country. I think there’s a strong chance he could be a second-team All-American.” – Andy Katz, ESPN.com “Charles Jenkins is one of those players that you have to find a way to see him play.” – Jeff Goodman, FoxSports. com “Jenkins is a legitimate Player of the Year candidate. He is strong and gets into the paint. He is a tough match-up because he can score over smaller guards and overpower thin guards.” – Kansas coach Bill Self “Think New York Jets linebacker in a basketball uniform and you can visualize the 6-3, 220-pound Jenkins. He is a unique blend of basketball skills, power, strength and quickness, making him a nightmare for CAA opponents to defend.” – Fran Fraschilla, ESPN.com “Jenkins could play in the Big East. He’s such an unusual player. He’s certainly got an opportunity to play on the next level.” – Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun “Jenkins is one of the best guards we’ve seen. He is so tough to handle because he’s relentless getting into the lane. He could play anywhere in the country.” – VCU coach Shaka Smart “Charles Jenkins is an NBA-type player, and it takes the whole team to defend him.” – George Mason coach Jim Larranaga “Jenkins is built like a truck, is tremendous off the bounce, and loves contact in the lane.” – Doug Gottlieb, ESPN.com “Jenkins is nearly impossible for anyone to guard 1-on-1. If he was in the ACC or the SEC, I think he’d be doing pretty much the same thing. He’s just a hard guy for any one player in college basketball to defend.” – James Madison coach Matt Brady “You’ve got to give it that man. Anything he does, he’s just unstoppable.” - UNC Wilmington guard Chad Tomko “Why I’m dumber than I think: I did a list of the nation’s top point guards and combo guards in the preseason. The list did not include Charles Jenkins. I was wrong. I’m not sure where he belonged on that preseason list, but I know he belonged somewhere…He’s on his way to being a consensus All-American.” – Gary Parrish, CBSSports.com “Charles Jenkins is the best playmaker I’ve seen this year...He could start for any team in the country.” - Hubert Davis, ESPN “He’s like the movie Unstoppable. He gets going full speed and he can change directions real quick. He’s a heck of a player.” - Old Dominion guard Kent Bazemore. “Jenkins is one of the most efficient high-usage players in the nation. He can really play.” - Andy Glockner, SI.com “He’s good, folks.” – Andy Katz, ESPN.com
