Trade Management for Asia
Trade Management for Asia (TMA) aims to produce future managers who are well versed in all aspects of international business, with a special focus on Asia.
education model. Characteristic of the Rotterdam Education Model (REM) are three learning tracks: knowledge-driven, practice-driven and student-driven education. More information can be found at hogeschoolrotterdam.nl/rom
First Year Doing business with Asia in the international market is an interesting but tough challenge. Many countries in Asia are becoming increasingly important trading partners. Therefore specialists are needed who are well equipped to take on this challenge. You will learn about the enormous diversity of other cultures and learn to deal with social and cultural differences in order to enter into trade relations with business partners worldwide. You enjoy making new contacts. You are enterprising and can quickly and easily adapt to changing circumstances. Besides English you also want to learn an Asian language. If you recognise yourself in this profile, TMA could be for you. Besides concepts such as business strategy, marketing, economics, cross-cultural management and marketing trends, you will also receive training in selling techniques and negotiation skills. A TMA graduate is flexible and ready to travel extensively in positions entailing frequent international contact. In many cases your home base will be outside the Netherlands. The TMA programme perfectly caters for this aspect by offering students the opportunity to participate in exchange programmes and placements in Asia.
Programme Structure Rotterdam Education Model To translate the practical, hands-on mentality associated with the city of Rotterdam and the talent development of our students into education Rotterdam University, University of Applied Sciences has developed a tightly implemented
The first year is intended as an introduction to the study programme and profession. In the first semester you will work on projects that focus on the “Doing Business in Asia and finding a Dutch market for Asian products. In the third quarter you will set up a virtual Trade Company in which you compete with other groups of students. You finish the first year with a practical assignment whereby you analyse an existing company with regard to management and organisational aspects.
Main Phase In the second year you start and run your own international company, together with your fellow students. In the third quarter you liquidate this company; if all goes well, with a profit. You will also complete a preliminary placement in the fourth quarter. The third year is devoted to your minor and a half year studying abroad after which you will stay abroad to complete a placement. The last half year of your training will be spent on your graduation project at a company doing business with Asia.
Subjects Basic Subjects There are modules for an Asian language, International Marketing & Management, Sales, Management Skills, Cross Cultural Management, Logistics, Economics and projects such as Doing Business in Asia, making an analysis for a company, a business game, etc.
Profession specific subjects Students do not just master the contents of the subjects, skills and attitude as such. They learn how to apply these elements in an integrated manner when performing real professional tasks and solving problems arising in realistic, professional situations. TMA trains competent professionals.
The core competencies are in the fields of management, export, import, entrepreneurship, consultancy, self-guidance and culture.
Elective Modules It is possible to fill in part of your study programme with elective modules. Being able to make your own choices gives you space to add to your personal development. In this way students can achieve independence, and gradually progress from guided to supervised, and subsequently to independent and self-reliant learning.
Minors In the first half of the third year, you will take a (deepening) minor: Exporting to Asia. You will complete this project for an existing company. The study programme will help you on your way with subjects such as law, strategic marketing and industry analysis. This minor is compulsory for all TMA students.
The main problem areas in which the trade manager focusing on Asia will deal with may vary from country to country but often include: dealing with language and cultural differences, decision-making in negotiations (culture, values / norms), dealing with local business partners (expectations, type of management, investments and risks), logistical bottlenecks in trade over long distances or problems with the quality of processes and products due to different cultural concepts.
Language of instruction The programme Trade Management for Asia can be followed in either Dutch or English.
In practice The trade manager focusing on Asia is a management professional who works mostly with commercial responsibilities. The activities take place within companies, institutions and institutes or governments in Asia, or in fact anywhere where they will be responsible for dealing with Asia or with certain Asian countries or regions. Upon successful completion of this study programme the trade manager focused on Asia may be self-employed or may hold one of the following positions in the business world: ¬ Regional Manager ¬ Export or Import Manager ¬ Sales Manager / Commercial Manager ¬ Account Manager ¬ Government Function (embassy, consulate, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Economic Affairs) ¬ Consultant / Advisor
“My first job was in a Japanese trade organisation which exported fish to Europe. Japanese was my main language and during my place ment I could get by quite well. In my second job I had lots of contacts with Chinese people. Fortunately I had also taken Mandarin during my studies! The nice thing about TMA is that you have the opportunity to ex perience the international business world yourself. The time I spent in Hong Kong was one of the highlights of my study.” Today Yoan is working as a consultant. She supports com panies that export to Asia or intend to do so. “My work involves all kinds of things and I feel really at home here!” Yoan KaYu Chung, TMA graduate
TMA is a study programme for people who like to work on projects with a focus on practice, rather than passively swallow what the lecturer tells them. At TMA you will have a great time, with good support and a very personal atmosphere. Danny den Hartog, TMA graduate
