Hazardous Substances

Globally Harmonized System These criteria are used to evaluate the hazards of both substances and mixtures. The GHS is intended to cover all hazardous chemical substances, dilute solutions and mixtures and address how labels and safety data sheets should be used to convey information about their hazards, and how to protect people from these effects. Compared to the current EU system the most noticeable change are the pictograms (formerly: hazard symbols). While the most of the GHS pictograms have an equivalent in the old system, the pictograms GHS 804, GHS 807 and GHS 808 are completely new.

GHS – Globally Harmonized System The GHS is a single internationally agreed system of classification and labelling of chemicals.

CLP – Classification, Labelling und Packaging The CLP regulation sets the rules for classification and labelling of chemicals. It aims to determine whether a substance or mixture displays properties that lead to a classification as hazardous.

According to the amended version especially the safety signs of the international norm DIN EN ISO 7010, which was published in the last year, where taken over, whereby considerably modiﬁcations for many signs resulted from this. DIN EN ISO 7010 regulates the international safety standards. The design basics for these signs are deﬁned in ISO 3864. Only a few exceptions from DIN 4844-2, which was also revised in the last year, are enclosed in the new ASR A1.3.

Basically it is essential that: To be up to date, it is advisable to convert. Only companies, which are labeling according to the actual ASR A1.3, can enforce the presumption of conformity. Especially for new buildings and modiﬁcations you should use this opportunity. But it is advised against a mixture!

Successional some additional remarks: Although the BGV A8 was replaced by the new ASR A1.3, it does not mean, that the existing safety sign is losing its validity.

On publication of the amended version of Workplaces Ordinance (ASR) A1.3 “Safety and health sign”, many things changed for companies and organizations in the field of labeling. According to the amended version especially the safety signs of the international norm DIN EN ISO 7010, which was published in the last year, where taken over, whereby considerably modifications for many signs resulted from this. DIN EN ISO 7010 regulates the international safety standards. The design basics for these signs are defined in ISO 3864. Only a few exceptions from DIN 4844-2, which was also revised in the last year, are enclosed in the new ASR A1.3.
