The Health & Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 The above regulation adopted European Safety Signs Directive (92/58/EEC), which outlines the correct layout for safety signs across the EU. The salient points are that employers are required to:

• Identify all fire exits, fire alarms and fire fighting equipment with pictogram signs. • Utilise safety signs to limit risk to hazards (not avoided or controlled by other measures) identified with the risk assessment.

• Maintain safety signs ensuring they are legible, up to date and remain relevant to the hazard. • Explain unfamiliar signs to their employees and tell them what they need to do when they see a safety sign.

• The Regulations apply to all places and activities where people are employed.

Legally Required

Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 Regulatory Reform replaces most fire legislation with one simple order. This means that any person with some control within the premises must take reasonable steps to help reduce the risk of fire, and ensure a safe means of escape. Main Rules –

A tube fabrication company has been fined after a worker had a finger severed in machinery. Magistrates’ Court heard an employee was operating a metal cutting saw when his right hand came into contact with the machinery, severing part of his index finger. A Magistrates’ Court heard how an employee in Northampton, was injured when he was hit in the eye by a shard of metal when a work colleague was operating a nail gun to fasten a piece of timber to a steel lintel. The court also heard that the eye-protection being worn by the nail gun operator, being lightweight ‘spectacle’ types rather than impact absorbing ‘goggles’, were not adequate for use with nail guns.

Machinery Signs Machinery Guard Signs A company has been fined £170,000 after a worker’s arm was injured in machinery. Crown Court heard how an installation engineer suffered a broken arm when it was pulled into machinery, where he was commissioning a new conveyor belt system. Overhead Signs Hazards in the Workplace A company has been fined after a worker was killed when he was struck by a load on a moving crane. Crown Court heard how an employee was assisting in the moving of a crucible from a re-melt furnace. The crucible had been lifted using an overhead crane and moved approximately ten yards to where an employee loosened the bolts around the crucible. The crane operator waited for the acknowledgment to proceed and lifted the crucible a couple of feet higher before pressing the southbound button. The crane operator saw an employee in the path of the crucible and shouted a warning while stopping the movement of the crane. The crane stopped but the load swung forward hitting the employee on the right side of the head.

Crown Court heard how an employee was undertaking work involving the use of isopropanol and a paint-like solution. The bucket containing the solution caught fire which then set light to his clothes, causing serious burns.
