Take Good Care of your Apple Trees Edwards Orchards Springville, CA. Since Mack Edwards began growing apples and peaches in the Springville area, four generations of Edwards have been caring for our grove. Taking care of the grove is a year-round process depending on the season. We often get questions from people at the Springville Farmers Market on how to take care of their trees as most people have just several. Many are intimidated by the care of trees and have complaints that the fruit is small, or they don’t get any fruit at all. So here are some helpful hints for you to have fruit trees that produce good fruit that you can eat.
wet. Don’t be scared of how much, use the coffee can method. Fill up the coffee can with the fertilizer and spread it around the base of the three, put some water on it and let it sink in. If you want to get fancy get a fertilizer which has nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus in a bag and do the same coffee can method, around a pound of fertilizer per tree. Do this in the spring before the tree starts budding and let it go. Second, the tree with bloom and you will notice the apples or peaches starting to grow. If they are in clusters thin them out to one or two per cluster. This makes the fruit larger and be sure to water throughout the summer. If you feel ambitious fertilize again every couple months, they will love it.
First, feed the trees; a simple process that I can make easy for you. There are many fertilizers on Finally, if you want to keep the market but, trees need nitrogen! bugs away there are many organic Get one which can either be dry or sprays or insecticides which you

can put on the threes that will keep some pests away. You will have to check the internet to find the one for you. Depending on the age of the trees you will need to prune them back during the winter months. Again, check the internet on how to do this, the trees are pretty forgiving so don’t be afraid. Now that we have gone through a year for you, sit down enjoy the fruit or make a pie. It’s the reward for all your hard work.

A Main Street Gem - Elster Building A little Elster History and Bob Tucker By Frances Hammond-Hovey
The Elster Building sits on the corner of Hwy 190 and Tule River Drive and has a very rich history here in Springville. According to Jeff Edwards, local historian and photographer, it is one of the oldest buildings in this little burg. Charles Alonzo Elster, erected the brick building in 1912. He was a significant businessman in this area and owned a sawmill at Balch Park, a sawmill in Hot Springs and 47 acres in town. Upon completion, the building housed several of Springville’s main businesses, including the post office, a bank, a drugstore, the Odd Fellows hall, and the town’s first telephone. The second floor of the building was used for residences and the basement contained Springville’s first ice plant. According to the sign on the side of the building, surveyor, newspaper, engineer and construction offices were part of the building’s past, also. Not too long ago Bob Tucker purchased the Elster Building from Cooper Walden. Bob has been coming to Springville almost all his life. His father was the power engineer for the Edison Power Plant and as a young fellow he would, accompany his dad when he was required to
check the plant. Tucker always admired the look of the Elster Building and loved Springville so much he bought a ranch here 15 years ago. Tucker is a Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) graduate and has had a very eclectic career. He was an educator for 30+ years, instructing Middle School and High Schoolers in “Industrial Decoration Arts” a subject he was very fond of as he was able to write his own curriculum. In fact, he is the only one qualified to teach the subject! He is an avid classic car collector and enjoys restoring cars. He also does Historical Restorations and is very fond of the Victorian era, hence his love future to make the building more of the Elster Building. handicap accessible and easier for In the early 1980s Springville us older folk. experienced a major fire that sent Gifford’s Market up in smoke Tucker believes that the Elster and the whole roof of the Elster Building is a focal point of Building caught fire. “This building has good bones,” says Tucker. He has some upgrades he wants to do. “As soon as I find the right colors, I am going to paint, and I want to replace the awnings and add more outside lighting. Derrick purchased the Derby House, did a little upgrading, remodeling and added the picket fence. He is not new to the restoration business as he is related Bob Tucker, the Elster Building owner, and they both have been restoring old structures to their original (or very close to) glory for many years now. Derrick has a BA in Communications from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, but prefers to get his hands dirty working in the restoration business. “I enjoy restoring old buildings and bringing back that quaint small-town atmosphere.” The endearing little bungalow has seen over 22

A New Place to Stay – Derby House -Springville - USA By Frances Hammond-Hovey

bookings since it became available in February of this year. “Bookings have come from all over the US,” said Derrick. “Minnesota, Texas, Nevada and of course Northern and Southern California.” He went on to say that three of the bookings were from referrals from friends that have stayed in the delightful gingerbread dwelling. He is very confident that past renters will return, and they will refer their friends. What does Derrick see for his future here in Springville? Well, he has purchased the house next-door to the Hamburger Stand and the first floor will soon be an artist’s studio. He is going to renovate the second floor for more vacation rentals. It is his hope that people wanting to move into the area will stay and want to bring their businesses to Springville. He wants space for them to rent so they too can experience small-town living. We locals know how great it is to raise a family here and live here so close to the our beloved giant redwoods. Are you planning a trip to the Giant Sequoia Monument and don’t want to camp the Derby house just might be up your alley? If you are local and lack space for visiting family or friends, you might want to try the Derby House. Or maybe you want to come visit for a while to experience that wholesome small-town ambiance, the Derby House might be just what you are looking for. For rental information see AirBnB online.

Apple Fest Proceeds Brings you Concerts in the Park ! All those who Love & Enjoy Concerts in the Park, Thank the Apple Festival The Springville Concerts in the Park was the brainchild of Dottie Hammond, a member of the Springville Apple Festival Committee. During one of the Apple Festival Committee meetings, in the beginning of 2000, Dottie convinced the Committee to put together a series of concerts for the community to enjoy. Dottie was willing to arrange for several groups of musical entertainers to come to the park and play for the enjoyment of the community, the Committee agreed and SPRINGVILLE CONCERTS IN THE PARK was born. During the first year of Concerts in the Park, Dottie and her family moved to the Coast due to Dottie’s health. There was a need for a spokesperson to cover the remaining concerts, Phyllis Taylor stepped up to the challenge and has been the Concerts organizer and hostess ever since. In the spirit of true community involve-
ment the Springville Apple Festival Committee was willing to fund the expense of the bands with the Springville Community Club sponsoring the Concerts by covering the insurance needs of the venture. It was felt that these two groups would be showing their appreciation to the community for all it has done to support them. This was a trial venture that has continued for 19 years!!!!

Smokey Bear was born on Aug. 9, 1944, when the U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council agreed that a fictional bear would be the symbol for their joint effort to promote forest fire prevention. Artist Albert Staehle was asked to paint the first poster of Smokey Bear. It depicted a bear pouring a bucket of water on a campfire and saying “Care will prevent 9 out of 10 fires.” Smokey Bear soon became very popular as his image appeared on a variety of forest fire prevention materials. In 1947, his slogan became the familiar “Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires!” Then in the spring of 1950, in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico, a young bear cub found himself caught in a burning forest. He took refuge in a tree, and while managing to stay alive was left badly burned. The firefighters who retrieved him were so moved by his bravery, they named him Smokey. News about this real bear named Smokey spread across the Nation, and he was soon given a new home at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. The living symbol of Smokey Bear, he played an important role in spreading messages of wildfire prevention and forest conservation. Smokey died in 1976 and was returned to Capitan, New
Smokey Bear Comes to the Apple Festival Every Year Mexico, where he is buried in the State Historical Park. Each year at Apple Festival time, Smokey Bear visits the Springville Volunteer Fire Company at the Tulare County Fire Station #22 - Springville where he greets the young and the old and is eager to have his picture taken and gives out red fire hats. In addition, the volunteers and staff are ready, willing and able to attend to any medical emergencies that arise during the Festival and perform their normal duties when duty calls. The Springville Volunteer Fire Company (SVFC) originated in 1944 with a few local residents who saw a need for fire protection in and around our community. Today the “Company” has grown to approximately 14 active members that respond to alarms. SVFC is not only a fire service, they also provide medical services as well. They have a very skilled team of qualified EMT’s that help assist ambulance crews on medical incidents. On an average, Springville Volunteer Fire Company, Station #22, responds to 500-600 calls a year, both fire and EMS. (Emergency Medical Service) If you are interested in joining the Spring-

The Springville Women’s Club continues their tradition of fundraising for the youth of our small town. Their two major fundraisers being apple pie sales at the Apple Festival and their food booth at the Springville Sierra Rodeo, in the Spring. Members gather before the Apple Festival and build the tastiest apple pies one can imagine. They have been known to make up to 650 pies (and many tarts as well) for this big fundraiser. Pies are available for pre-bake purchase as they are actually making them. They are all baked the day before the festival, to assure freshness and flavor. This year the pre-baked pies can be

Springville Welcomes our Newest Business By Frances Hammond-Hovey
Springville’s newest institution is Sierra Healing Hands. Owner and proprietor Chantelle Cowan opened the doors to Sierra Healing Hands in mid July of this year to offer her ‘healing hands’ providing Therapeutic Massage to those of us who are in need of her special touch. Chantelle grew up in Soda Springs, ID and had lived there all her life before moving with her husband, Will and daughter, Mariyah to Springville to care for her husband’s grandparents. Right out of high school Chantelle went to work in a rest home giving her a great affinity for the elderly and a desire to help them to stay healthy and keep them strong. She thought she would like to become a nurse’s assistant, but due to a hearing loss issue that would not be in the stars for Chantelle. Working two jobs and studying very diligently

Pet adoption is quickly becoming the preferred way to find a new dog, puppy, cat or kitten. Best of all, there are so many benefits when you adopt a dog or adopt a cat over buying. For instance, pet adoption will almost always be more affordable than buying a puppy for sale from a breeder or finding a kitten for sale from a litter. There are more benefits as well. Since pets in rescues and shelters usually come from a home where the owners ran out of money, got divorced, or had to move, it’s common to find that the dogs and cats on our website are already housetrained, good with kids, or do well with other pets. People are finding out that buying a puppy for sale from a breeder isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and the dogs and cats don’t leave the organization without having their shots and being taken to the vet. That means less stress, and more savings! So what are you waiting for? Go find that perfect pet!

Charles Baldwin CPA Tax Season Just Might Get a Little Easier for us Springvillians ! Coming new to Springville in early December is Charles Baldwin CPA, just in time for the 2019 tax season. The office of Charles Baldwin CPA is located at 35559-B Hwy 190, right next door to the SPUD office and will be available by appointment for tax preparation and bookkeeping. Charles, who likes to be called Chuck, moved to the area with his lovely wife Alice about three years ago to manage an accounting firm in Porterville. Before moving to Springville, the Baldwins called El Segundo their home and Chuck was self-employed with his own CPA firm. Chuck and Alice were not new to the area as they are avid campers and spent numerous vacations in our lovely part of the Sierra. Chuck also plays a mean trombone
and the couple travels every year to the Jazz Festival in Three Rivers to enjoy the ‘Big Jazz Band’ sounds. That was their allure to move to Tulare County aside from the new job, but now it is time for him to begin again his own business. The Baldwins have not waisted their time getting to know their neighbors and the area as Alice is involved with organizing “Christmas in the Park” and Chuck is involved with the Springville Lions.
make appearances in Tax Court. Working Pro Bono is not a new concept to Chuck as he spends a lot of time working in the ‘Not for Profit Sector’.
Chuck will be hanging around his new office this weekend, why not drop by and welcome him and his new business to downtown Springville. Remember tax season will soon be upon us, you can make an appointment for pre-year end planning or for any of your accounting needs by calling 559-481-4CPA Chuck brings 30+ years of accounting (481-4272). experience with him and many years managing his own accounting business. With all this experience he is bound to be very successful. He continues his education working towards a master’s degree in taxation at CSUN (Northridge). He travels there every Thursday working at the LowIncome Tax Clinic helping those who need advice representing themselves in tax related issue with IRS and at times must

Don’t miss the 3rd Annual Foothills Festival at River Ridge Ranch Saturday, November 2nd, 10 AM – 4 PM The Foothills Festival combines music, arts, food, activities, and outdoor education. And this year, it’s free! The Bluegrass Element will be playing on the Main Stage and an eclectic mix of musicians and music will hold forth on the River Barn Stage. Route 65 Grill will offer up food for sale. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company has donated the beer for sale and wines will also be poured. Last year, Rob Hodges of Naturescapes designed and installed a fabulous labyrinth. This year, the public can walk that labyrinth and also visit with Rob as he demonstrates how to Lose Your Lawn. Why not reduce water consumption and stop mowing at the same time? Dean Diaz de Leon will be wrangling artists around the River Barn and Erik Gonzalez will bring an entire team of paint artists from the Visalia area to continue the Art Wall mural. Also expect some interesting and unusual approaches to a youth art contest. The Foothills Festival is co-sponsored by the Alta Peak Chapter of the California Native Plant Society and River Ridge Institute.

Patton House Gift & Thrift The Patton House Gift & Thrift Shop is the little jewel of Springville. The house was built in the late 19th century for Alonso and Annette Belle Patton whose pictures are found over the archway when you enter the door. It was later acquired by others who first rented it and eventually sold it to the Springville Community Club in the late 1970’s. Under the Club’s ownership, the Patton House has served the community for more than three decades as a gift and thrift shop with proceeds returning to the community in the form of scholarships, sponsorships, and other monetary donations. The Patton House Gift & Thrift Shop receives donated items of clothing, small appliances, kitchen items, bedding, linens, and home décor which are sold at amazingly low prices. “We are our own best customers” is a sentiment nearly every volunteer cashier has shared over the years. The shop is staffed
entirely by volunteers from the Community Club. In the gift shop, visitors can buy unique homemade knitted items like baby cowboy boots, afghans, aprons, little girls’ dresses and sweaters, handmade purses and other items. The store is a wonderful way for local crafters to market their creations. The Patton House also features locally produced foods like Armstrong Olives, Eagle Olive Oil, honey, apple jams, jellies, syrups and granola and assorted nuts. It also boasts a wide selection of greeting cards and you will find soaps, lotions, knick knacks, yard art, and the list goes on. Stop by anytime. The Patton House is open 363 days a year, closing only on Christmas and Thanksgiving. Hours are from 10 AM to 4PM and the phone number is 559-5393993.
Springville’s Patton House serves as headquarters for the Springville Community Club, sponsors of the Springville Apple Festival.
