CHAPTER: JIGGING
by hogylureco
There is something magical about jigging. Perhaps it’s the simplicity of it? Maybe it’s the “jack in the box” factor One minute you are jigging, the next the rod jigs back!! Stopping and dropping on fish you see on the finder and immediately hooking up never gets old but in all seriousness, there are days when jigging is “the only way” for bass and blues, particularly during the dog days of summer Sure, you can get specific jigging outfits, but if you’re like me, your striper casting outfits are suitable in most cases unless fishing with very heavy jigs. I also want to mention groundfish here. I have gone almost fully bait-less when I pop a jig-biki rig in front of my favorite striper jigs
Jigging Factors to Crack the Code:
Fast or Slow: A simple rule of thumb is fast jig when fish are all over the water column. Slow jigging when targets are holding at consistent depths
Matching The Hatch: Like casting, this is an easy enough concept for example if they are eating sand eels, small and skinny does the job. With stripers it will be sand eels at least 65% of the time Be sure to have a hi-vis option as an attractor
Depth: You’ll want some water under you to fully capitalize on jigging, at least 40’. Jigging becomes increasingly difficult in more shallow waters as you quickly jig lure out of the zone
