What could possibly make Taco Bell better? Probably happy hour! Yes, that’s right from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. you get delicious American food that is styled after classic Mexican food. As college students, budgets for food are usually pretty small, but Taco Bell is here to help. The only downfall is the, sometimes, high calorie intake.

The best thing about Taco Bell’s social media has been the use of the famous hashtag #FourthMeal. Taco Bell has created a type of social media that feeds off of, not only their own posts, but the posts of their customers who want to participate in TB’s fun. If you want to learn the ways of marketing and branding, take notes from this company that knows what they are doing. It’s easy to get caught up in Taco Bell’s marketing, but let’s not forget the real beauty of Taco Bell. That beauty of tacos for $1 and unlimited amounts of Baja Blast that can fill you up when school has you down. Taco Bell doesn’t have to be an obsession, like it is for me, but tacos are food for the soul – so, fill up.

THE ART OF AN APPAREL CHAIRMAN Windows were down, Ray Bans were on, Katy Perry was blasting, and my four best friends and I were dressed to the tens in our pajamas we’d worn for the past 24 hours on our excursion to Florida. We had finally hit Panama City Beach Parkway and were nearly on our last stretch to reaching our hotel. Suddenly, a black Mercedes SUV pulled up next to us, rolled the windows down, and six crazy girls screamed out the window, throwing up their hands in none other than the Tri Delta “delta”. We shrieked for joy, laughing as the letters on the back of my SUV had attracted attention the entire trip. Having our letters “on” us at all times was an instant way to meet not only other sisters, but also any other Greeks. As current Apparel (Licensing) Chairman, it is my job to let members of my chapter find these connections through similar encounters. I am not just a liaison between shirt companies, but a liaison between all sisters in the U.S. Without me, no one would realize what organization you stand for. The Art of the Apparel Chairman is more than just designing t-shirts. Do you realize how many girls you have to please with one simple design? It’s impossible. However, it’s fun to try. I have a position that allows me to connect with everyone in the chapter, and that is a blessing. I am able to make any girl smile, just by allowing her to “go shopping” for sorority clothing. I am a creative genius. I’m not stating that, I’m saying as an Apparel Chairman you have to be. No matter how hard you Pinterest, you have to have a clear idea of how to communicate what you want with a shirt company. Coming up with new designs, ideas, and articles of clothing to put your letters on isn’t an easy task. It’s helpful to not only know how to communicate with others, but how to use graphic design programs. Lastly, I am attentive. On that Spring Break trip, I

It’s a position you can’t just take and think sending a picture of a design to a company will work. Ultimately, though, it’s not as big as I’m making it sound, but what it creates is. Seeing girls wearing their letters on a beach, in the airport, or while studying abroad is a rewarding feeling. Knowing you are a part of something greater comes from seeing small things, like shirts. Next time you’re wearing your letters think of the process behind them. Think of why you wear them. Think of thanking your Apparel Chairman, as she does more for you than you think!

It may seem like such a simple idea to buy clothing that did not cause any harm to animals because it seems like everything made lately is cotton or linen but if you start thinking about what you wear everyday you actually probably wear more “animal” then you would think. It is not just fur coats but most shoes are made from some sort of cow, goat or even lamb and deer. that you’re doing, whether that be homework or hanging out with friends. Some of my favorite memories have come from late night study sessions where there’s little studying going on. Granted I felt and looked like death in the morning, but I would never trade a few more hours of sleep for the laughter and friendships I’ve formed. You can sleep when you’re dead, right? 4. Going Greek was the best decision I made. I was told before rush that going Greek would be live changing and I’d meet some of the most amazing people ever. I doubted the importance until I was standing in the front yard of Chi Omega bid day. I looked around at all the girls I didn’t know and wondered who my friends would be. Looking back I realize I never would have met some of my best friends if I wouldn’t have gone Greek. Also I wouldn’t be apart of an amazing community of people that not only strive to more than they can be, but to improve the world around them.

I’ve been reflecting on exactly what has happened these past months as the end of the semester rolls around. It’s true they say you will change and learn so much about yourself in a short amount of time, but it’s the lessons that people didn’t tell me about that have met the most. 1.
It’s ok to not know what you’re doing.
Every break, every time you see family or friends, the question is always the same, “So have you got everything figured all out?” I used to get so freaked out because obviously no, I didn’t have it figured out yet. I have my major and my dreams, but I have no clue if that’s all going to work out. Freshman year taught that just because I’m in college doesn’t mean I have to know what I’m doing for the rest of my life. It’s time to experiment and try new things with minimal risk. Once I realized that I worried a lot less. 2.
Sometimes homework isn’t the most important thing.
Yes, getting homework done and doing well in classes is very important because in the end we’re here to go to school, but sometimes lessons don’t always come from a class room. Getting involved, volunteering, or being there when someone needs you can teach you just as much, if not more than problems in a book. 3.
Staying up till 4am isn’t always smart, but brings the best memories.
I know, mom always said the key to staying healthy is getting plenty of sleep, but in college that all goes out the window. At night, time and sleep seem irrelevant to anything

CALLING ALL PERFECTIONISTS Maybe it’s time you took a break.
It’s all too easy to get caught up in the daily grind of college life, but make sure you’re taking the time to enjoy these four years.
BAILEY WILLIAMS Chi Omega
Let me ask you a question. As Bailey is a freshman studying fashion design with communications. you sit here reading this, try and Yo u m a y c o n t a c t h e r a t think back a year ago today. Or baileyjowilliams@gmail.com. maybe not even the same day, I want you to think back to this same general time frame last year. Do you remember what project you were obsessing over? Or maybe what test you crammed all night for? I’m going to guess probably not. Sure, maybe you still remember that anatomy exam that tanked your grade in the class, but chances are you don’t remember what deadlines were stressing you out a year ago at this time. Why? Because those are not the memories we are going to cherish when our college years are over. If you’re anything like me, you have a hard time letting yourself have fun unless every single thing on your checklist is finished - and not only completed, but completed perfectly. I’m a perfectionist
www.theodysseyonline.com
and an over-achiever, one of those people that like to have everything done perfectly at least 24 hours before it is due. Yes, I’m one of those - I apologize. However, as I’ve gone through my freshman year of college, I’m slowly learning to be spontaneous – thanks to some of the wonderful women I have met over the last few months. One of my close friends said to me one night as I was debating studying or hanging out with the girls, “Bailey, college is not about studying, it’s about the memories you make.” Now, while your college education is highly important, and yes studying has its time and place, she had a point. I needed to learn to let myself relax every once in a while; I didn’t need to always have everything perfectly done days – weeks – before they were due. So, to all you perfectionists and over-achievers, let yourself have some wiggle room. If your friends want to make a trip to Yogurtini, and whatever you’re working on can wait till tomorrow, go. So what if it’s one in the morning – make that Taco Bell run. Explore thrift shops for an entire afternoon. Go for a walk. Grab some coffee with that friend you’ve been meaning to catch up with but haven’t made time. I guarantee that in a few years those will be the nights you remember. You won’t remember the nights you stayed in studying for hours, or the afternoon that passed by as you wrote an essay alone in a study room. I’m not suggesting you quit studying altogether, just that you manage your time. Allow time for yourself, for relationships and for enjoying your college years. These are the year’s to be a little silly. Besides, you’re going to want some better stories to tell your grandkids than that you studied all day, every day and had a perfect 4.0. No one wants to hear that kind of story. So let yourself take a break today, you’ve earned it.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR SUMMER? Brushing up on your resume doesn’t sound like the most fun thing to do during the school year.
With tests and homework, it’s easy to forget about working on your resume during the school year. But, then summer hits, and you’re without an internship and a lousy resume that you vow to redesign after you finish watching just one more episode on Netflix. Without an outstanding resume, you’ll never land an outstanding internship. Internships are important because they look great to future employers. They prove that you have been chosen to work for a company out of all whom applied, and that you were able (hopefully!) to complete the tasks given to you. Internships show dedication. Which is great, because—let’s face it—dedication is a very important trait our future employers are looking for. So, with summer looming only weeks away, how can you be sure your resume is competitive and you can score that internship? Career Services is a great place to start. I know this sounds like every other speech you’ve heard about Career Services, but they really are amazing. They were able to help me build my resume and get as many eyes on it as I could before I submitted it to internship opportunities. They also have a PDF file of exactly how to format your resume and a cover letter. Which is great for someone who has no idea what a cover
letter is—believe me! They also provide interview tips. Which is amazing because interviews are scary, and Phi Mu with Career Services, Kara is a sophomore studying they’re able to help ease English and communications. the stress an interview You may contact her at karacosentino@gmail.com. may bring. In order to make an appointment with Career Services, you can call the reception desk at 402-472-3145, or use MyPlan (through Blackboard) to set up an appointment with someone to look over your resume. Now that you have a kickin’ resume, though, where do you go? The answer to that is: Husker Hire Link. When you sign up for Husker Hire Link, you take a survey about where you’re from and your interests. Then, the website does everything else for you. It tells you based on your survey how a certain job will match with you, and also shows you many possible internships. You can also use an “advanced search” and search for internships specifically in one area or specific to one major. Husker Hire Link then will let you electronically upload a resume, cover letters, and writing samples, which makes it extremely easy to apply to an internship of your dreams. (You literally just hit the “apply” button.) To log into Husker Hire link, the URL is: http://www.unl. edu/careers/husker-hire-link I found both the Career Services and Husker Hire link extremely helpful when I was looking to gain experience as an intern so future job employers could see that I was not only hard-working, but also dedicated.

WHAT TO WEAR: GUY’S FORMAL EDITION In many issues of The Odyssey, there are articles about “formal season” and tips about what girls should wear to formal. I know this because I’ve written quite a few of the articles myself. After reading all of these articles, I figured it was time to give the guys some advice on what to wear during formal season. Partly because their attire is pretty generic HANNAH and they really are SCHINKEL Gamma Phi Beta the ones that need the fashion help in most Hannah is a junior studying textile and apparel design. You may contact cases. However, there her at hschinkel@windstream.net. are quite a few little tips and tricks to make you guys out there look amazing for formal and they will knock your date right off her five-inch heels! Bow ties—I know many guys object to these, but if you can pull off a bow tie, you will definitely be a step above the rest of the guys just wearing plain old ties. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to tie a bow tie. You’re in a fraternity…someone knows how to tie a bow tie. If you can’t find anyone, there’s always YouTube. And if all else fails, many stores have alreadytied bow ties. In that case, I would expect to get made fun of. Gray Suits—Over my super eventful spring break of binge-watching Netflix, I started to see a lot of guys in movies and different TV shows wearing gray suits. I’ve seen them on guys before but it really intrigued me how good these guys looked. (Okay, I’m done gawking.) My advice here is to branch out from just wearing the plain black suit jacket and dress pants and try going with a different color. Charcoal, light gray, dark gray, pin stripe, there are so many options! Match your date—Even though she may
never explicitly tell you she wants you to match her, she always does. It’s nice walking into the dance with some arm candy that is somewhat matching your dress. Your date worked really hard picking out her dress and she spent a lot of time getting ready, so the least you can do is match her! A couple days before (or hours for most guys), send her a text asking if she has any specific color she wants you to wear. Speaking from experience, she will greatly appreciate it. Tell her she looks beautiful—I know, this isn’t fashion advice, but it’s more like life advice. Whether you have been dating for a year or you got set up on a blind date, she still took a lot of time getting ready and telling her she looks beautiful will raise her spirits tremendously. Just because you tell her she looks good doesn’t mean you have to marry her, it just means you are a gentleman. I hope all you guys out there take some of this advice and have a very happy formal season!

SERENA WILLIAMS: 20 YEARS OF DOMINANCE CHRISTIAN FOLSOM Delta Tau Delta
Christian is a sophomore studying broadcasting. You may contact him at christianfolsom@gmail.com.
This year marks the 20th year of Serena Williams career since going pro when she was merely 14 years old. Serena lost in the first round of qualifying to Anne Miller, winning just two games in her first match ever as a pro. Those days are now long behind her. Serena has since gone on to go 647–114 or win about 85.01% of her matches in her career. She has quickly become the highest paid woman athlete in the world with over $54,634,898 in prize money alone over her 20 year career. Serena has also been sponsored by Nike since 2003, as well as made many appearances in Nike commercials—all great ways to pull in some major cash as an athlete. Serena has, as of late, been one of the best tennis players among women in the world, but only extremely recently has she put together seasons of absolute dominance. In 2013, Serena posted a jaw-dropping record of 78-4 and won over $12,385,572 in prize money alone. She managed to win the French Open and the US Open as well as a number of other tournaments. All four times she was beaten, her losses were front page news on Sportscenter
due to the absolute shock that she would actually lose— that is just how dominant she has become. Two out of her four losses came as a result of a back injury last year. In her most famous match of 2013, Serena lost to the young American Sloane Stephens. Serena had been nursing her back injury for quite a while at that point and it all came to a head as she was narrowly beaten 6-3, 5-7, 4-6 in the 2013 Australian Open. Serena and Sloane met again in the US Open only a few months later and Serena beat her easily. Now considered one of the best female players of all time, Williams extended her winning streak to 22 matches by successfully defending her title at the 2014 Brisbane International. In the semifinals, Williams defeated world no. 4 Maria Sharapova for the fourteenth consecutive time and, for the title, world no. 2 Victoria Azarenka in straight sets. Serena’s 2014 Australian Open campaign was, once again, hampered by an injury. Williams ended up losing to Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round, later revealing that she had considered withdrawing from the tournament even before the start of her third round match versus Daniela Hantuchová due to a back injury. Williams next competed at the 2014 Dubai Tennis Championships, where she lost her semifinal match against Alizé Cornet in straight sets. This loss marked the first time since the 2012 Western & Southern Open that Williams had failed making at least the final at a non-Slam event, as well as being the first time that she had lost a match in straight sets since then. Will her injuries continue to slow her down? Or can Serena etch her name in stone as the GOAT in women’s tennis? 2014 awaits, and so does a lot more of the super Serena all of us Americans love to watch on the court.
