Even if all you are interviewing for is a summer job these little tips could help you win over your employer and land a fantastic job.
First impressions can mean the difference between getting a job offer and being told the company is going in a different direction. Brand name clothes and office chic clothes don’t necessarily need to be worn to rock a first impression. If you wear a big smile and have bright eyes then interviews will be drawn to those first. Don’t overload on the makeup ladies, let your natural beauty and happiness shine through. With nail polish try to stay with neutrals unless you want to make a powerful impact. In that case wear a classy red. It’ll catch your employers eye and it will let them know you mean business. As Greeks we are all classy people, but sometimes a couple of other accessories should be added to add a bit of seriousness to your demeanor. Wristwatches is an important accessory for professionals so it should be an important accessory for when you’re job searching. Avoid loading your arms up with extra bracelets though. What colors you’re flaunting could help you portray a strong trait to your future employer. According to Business Insider, Wearing black is supposed to emulate leadership qualities. Make sure to keep your outfit from turning into a scary goth look, being subtle with some solid black clothing options could get you a promotion before your even start. Blue tells the interviewer that you’re a team player and do well working in groups. Gray is a classic choice and shows that you are a logical person in the work place. It also tells your employer that you are able to work independently and don’t need a lot of extra attention to get a job done. White might seem boring to some people but it also shows that you’re an organized individual and dependable. You’re the calm in the midst of a stormy work place. The color brown can also help you pull off those dependable vibes. It highlights your warm, reliable and dependable qualities. Just like wearing red on your nails wearing red clothing conveys power as well as courage and excitement. Employers believe it is the best way to persuade or impress an interviewer. The “loud” colors also called green, yellow, orange and purple all help express your creative side. Most employers said they wouldn’t recommend wearing these colors to an interview because they don’t produce feelings of commitment or trust. They can make you seem fun but they also make you look attention seeking.
After first impressions are made don’t forget about the conversation part of interviews. Practice makes perfect so practice selling yourself and your abilities to your employer. A crucial thing is making sure you know where you want to go. If you don’t know where you want to go nobody else can help you get there. Interviews are centered around you but don’t forget that you are also conversing with another human who likes to talk about themselves just as much as you like to talk about yourself. Ask common courtesy questions and care about their answers. Asking followup questions which could end up setting you apart from the rest of the applicants. Interviews don’t have to be as daunting as you believe. Remember that the person you are talking to is a person. The best advice I’ve ever received is that if an employer doesn’t want you then that’s their loss. Don’t sell yourself short because in the end you will find the job that’s right for you.

The contestants included: Peter Vankat of Delt, Creighton Let of FIGI, Matthew Weidner of Theta Chi, Dewayne Taylor of TKE, Logan Goldhorn of AGN, Trevor Poppen of Pike, Tyler Brattain of Theta Xi, Chris Elbe of Phi Kapp, Conor Tomac of DU, Brian Sawyer of Phi Delt, Matthu Beck of Acacia, Jacob Patten of Sigma Chi, Nico Russel of Kappa Sig, David Palmtag of Beta, Jack Rodenburg of Sig EP, and Davis Behle of Farmhouse. The show started by introducing all of the men, and then moved onto a talent section. Although dancing was the most popular talent, one funny talent was Phi Delta Theta’s Brian Sawyer demonstrating how many different things he could break. He proved he could break a girl’s heart and an HP printer in less than two minutes. Pete Vankat, of Delt roller bladed on the small stage to Hella Good by No Doubt. Next, the formalwear portion ensued. The remaining men dressed to impress and answered questions that varied from: What is your idea of a perfect date? to Why should you be Phi Mu’s 2014 Greek Man of the Year? All of the remaining men answered hilariously and entertained the large crowd. Then, the show came to a close and the winners were announced. In third place was Conor Tomac of DU, second place was Dewayne Taylor of TKE, and in first place, Phi Mu’s 2014 Greek Man of the Year was named Matthu Beck of Acacia. During the show, the audience was able to donate money to a specific contestant, and whoever raised the most money won the Fan Favorite. Matthew Weidner of Theta Chi was the Fan Favorite and was able to raise
Fun props and pizza were also provided to the audience, which presented a fun atmosphere on top of an amazing male beauty pageant. Altogether, the event was extremely successful, a night full of laughs, and helped raise money for a great cause.

REMEMBER WHEN... Remember when summer used to hold an air of magic? A sense that time became irrelevant and anything was possible? Back when summer was a time when you could escape the classroom for a short three months and spend all day in your swimming suit. When you were five it may have meant your mom hooking up a sprinkler in your back lawn and afternoon naps. Ten through twelve was a time for the public pool and hoping those cute lifeguards would notice you. Our early teens were spent laying out in the summer heat and tanning like rotisserie chicken, while sipping on our perspiring Sonic lemonades. Maybe in high school you spent your weekday’s working and your weekends lounging at a lake. But then college rolled around…
For some, summer might still mean the same thing. A break from the daily grind and making sure your tan stays perfectly even. But I think many of us have let our fast-paced culture interrupt the magic of summer. We are so focused on landing an internship, making money, and making the most of our free time that we never actually get a break. Sure, internships and making money are important, but does that mean we have to give up the last of the “free” summers we have? Unless you’re going into the education field, these may be the last carefree summers you have.

Even with a busy schedule summer always gives us a little extra time to do something. It must be all the extra daylight hours. So, for anyone and everyone with a little free time in the next few months, here are some ideas for making the most of your summer. Go to a music festival. I went to Bonnaroo in Tennessee last year and made countless lifelong memories in a matter of days. Tickets can be a little pricey, but the experience is invaluable. I met so many great people, saw legendary musicians, found new favorite bands, ate incredible food and camped in a tent beneath the stars for four nights. There’s a vibe of togetherness that you get from all the people who surround you and you’ll make some awesome new friends. Music festivals tend to be over long weekends, which is nice for those who have to work or go to school. There’s a huge variety as well. From Lollapalooza in Chicago to Electric Forest in Michigan, there are festivals to fit everyone’s taste and schedule. If you’re looking to spend a little money, but get a ton in return, I highly recommend a music festival. Don’t forget sunscreen and baby wipes! Learn a new skill. Who has time to learn something new when classes take up the majority of the time? I never get the chance to practice anything I’m trying to learn while school’s in session. That’s why I’m taking this summer to do yoga more seriously and really improve myself. There’s so much you could learn. Maybe you really want to learn how to juggle, or hoop dance or long board. Take complete advantage of the sunshine, go to a park and do it. Then go impress your friends. Read. I don’t want to sound like your fourth grade teacher, but why don’t you read this summer. You might find something you love. Doesn’t it seem

like you find the best new things when you’re not searching? Maybe that book you picked up on a whim is as amazing as the cover makes it look. You’re also going to look really smart. Being able to discuss what you’ve been reading with someone else will make you look educated and well rounded and, just maybe, reading at your favorite coffee shop could catch the attention of that cutie in the corner booth. Try new places to eat. Don’t just stop in at your old standby diner once a week. Try a new place. Sit out on the patio on a nice day. Then brag to your friends about how good it was. In short, don’t waste these precious summer months lying on the couch with a bag of Doritos. No matter what you do, this summer it’s going to be an amazing and incredible time. #Summer2k14 No ragrets.

MOVIES UNABLE TO DELIVER It seems like every movie season, whether it be summer or Christmas is filled with at least a couple of features based on novels. With this comes high expectations that are usually never met.

I don’t understand why there are so many inconsistencies between the book and movie version. I understand that it’s incredibly hard to fit a 400-page book into a 120 minute feature, but when the characters are morphed into shells of their original personalities, something is seriously wrong.
Why won’t I understand? Isn’t it the director and screenwriters job to make me understand? This is literally a movie that is supposed to be portraying a book, why aren’t they the same? This made me think of every book that I loved that was transformed onto the screen and how it always left me a little empty and always wanting more, but I never felt that when my nose was snuck in the binding of a book. Why is it so hard for Hollywood to come through on such a simple task? After all the half the work is already done for them, all they need to do is bring it to life.

ONE LAST FIRESIDE As April comes to a close, most of UNL MEG is anxious to finish RONSPIES finals, enjoy warmer Delta Delta Delta weather and ignore Meg is a junior studying the prospect of the business administration. However, for the seniors of the Greek community, life drastically changes. Currently, seniors are enjoying their last few weeks tucked into their bunk beds on 16th Street. Many are partaking in ending rituals, enjoying favorite meals by their chefs or sadly hearing their last house announcements on Monday. Tri Delta senior traditions are close to my heart, as I will be losing some of my best friends. Our senior week officially begins the Monday before Dead Week. Each night, the seniors are paired with a different pledge class to enjoy bonding activities. This way, we can all share our goodbyes on a happy, ending note. Our freshmen enjoyed watching 21 Jump Street in our big TV room with Eileen’s Cookies and popcorn; our sophomores attempted to bowl at Family Fun Center; and our juniors took on Paint Yourself Silly and had a round at Pies and Pints after! Spending their week with the sisters they will no longer have is extremely special to these upperclassmen and the week centers on tradition. Back to Monday, though. My favorite day of the week is the seniors last Monday Night Dinner. A hallowed tradition, they stroll downtown for the afternoon and do not arrive back until chapter, overly eager to shout out comments about “PC 10”. We gather in our Piano Room at our house to hear each relive their college days by getting two minutes to share wild stories, most of which are either too funny or too inappropriate to mention! Our senior Fireside is anxiously awaited all year. Along with stories at Fireside came prophecies, this year. Each senior selects either a friend or sorority family member to write her prophecy, which is usually completely made up and non-realistic. After a night of sharing memories, it’s a way to make the seniors laugh and realize whatever is coming next isn’t as serious as they think.

Once the week has gone by, our seniors officially undergo their last ritual at Pansy Brunch on Sunday. They will us anything and everything, cry over our last breakfast together and actually realize they are seniors. (It usually hits people in the last hour.) Overall, senior week is one of the saddest, yet most memorable, weeks of the year for every chapter at UNL. Hats off to our graduates. You all made it through the best four (or more!) years of your life!

I was in shock. Most kids had portable CD players. I had a Walkman and felt vaguely superior to most kids. But here, in the pudgy, pink palm of Cody’s right hand, lay the future of music. Well, for like eight years anyways. The iPod and iTunes came. They saw. They conquered. Digital music sales soared, physical music sales dropped precipitously, the death of the music industry was foreseen; now it is 2014 and iTunes is an afterthought to me. And my, oh my, how things do change. I never would have guessed that, of all things, my iTunes library would be near last on the list of what I still pay attention to. But then again, I never really expected to have a supercomputer the size of a deck of cards to double as my phone, either, and yet here I am typing some of this in the cloud on my fancy Galaxy S4. Things change quick in this new high-tech world of ours. Which, I suppose, doesn’t really make Spotify’s rise to importance all that surprising. And yes, we’ve finally made it to the point, readers, so breathe a sigh of relief. This article is indeed about Spotify, and how it has succinctly replaced iTunes for me, and also Pandora, and Google Music, and all of the other half-baked music apps that have attempted to sway my patronage. Spotify is by far the best of all of these worlds. It’s because Spotify, as forward-thinking as they are, understand better than most that the landscape of music consumption shifts at a ridiculously fast rate. They compensate for this better than any other service I’ve seen. At the outset of their attempts to become relevant, Spotify offered a somewhat cool idea - free music streaming - and made it desirable. Only certain people, with invites, could use it. Once its popularity began to skyrocket, Spotify removed listening limits; they added more features, like making playlists and syncing with iTunes libraries and integration with social media; then they allowed the smartphone apps to be used by non-paying users. All of these have helped to create a service that is exceedingly easy to use. I can find basically any song
I want to listen to and listen to it for free and as much as I want, courtesy of Spotify and some thirty-second advertisements. In a world that was once dominated by the idea of owning your own music - the iTunes idea - Spotify has now re-invented the radio for a modern audience. I never once imagined I would be able to let go of my connection to my iTunes library, but being able to listen to any song, anywhere, and make custom radios and playlists based off of my tastes (for free) has got me hooked. Welcome to the future of music.
