PANHELLENIC PROUD

PanHellenic held a Pride Week full of fun festivities for the PHC sorority community during the week of March 24th-29th. This week is planned and designed to bring our community together and celebrate the privileges we have as being Greek women. PanHellenic is currently made up of 11 ladies, one woman representing each chapter on our campus. This year Ashley Peterson of Kappa Kappa Gamma is the PH President. We [Kappa’s] are so proud of her and wanted to support all the hard work her and the team put into this. Part of the PanHellenic creed is, “We, as fraternity women, stand for service through the development of character.” On Monday, sorority women were given the option to serve at various locations. There was a neighborhood and Greek Circle clean up to give back to the surrounding neighborhoods. You could also participate in assisting the Lubbock Arboretum in preparing for spring and planting or help the Salvation Army prepare and clean their kitchens!

Tuesday evening the ladies of Kappa Delta, Zeta Tau Alpha and PanHellenic Council hosted speaker Dr. Lori Hart for a “Making Greek Great” presentation. Dr. Hart provided tons of great information regarding addressing and fixing problems and supporting members, while keeping the audience constantly laughing. A Block Party was held on Greek Circle Wednesday night. Each house hosted a mini-event sharing food, entertainment and sisterhood. My chapter hosted a “Kappa Kake Walk” where we jammed to music and our amazing Pickers sang a couple songs! We also had a table full of books that girls could write sweet notes in before we handed the books off to our philanthropy. Zeta hosted a “Bra Pong” event to raise awareness to their philanthropy benefiting Breast Cancer, Theta cooked pancakes

for “Cakes for CASA”, and other sororities handed out treats such as pizza, root beer floats, and popcorn! This event was fun and a fresh idea. I would love to see how it builds in our future!

If you were at the SUB on Wednesday, you could participate in “Take a Seat, Make a Friend”. This event allowed two people to step into a ball pit, choose a bouncy ball that had a conversational idea written on it and talk to a stranger! These topics ranged from “Talk about an event that changed your life” to “Make a secret handshake”. This event was a really awkward, but hilarious way to meet a new person on our campus! Thursday evening, Kappa hosted a documentary, “Miss Representation” that explored women’s under-representation in positions of power and influence. The school week came to an end with a Spirit Day, encouraging ladies to wear their letters. PanHellenic Pride Week wrapped up with the Lubbock Color Run on Saturday! I believe I can speak on behalf of the entire PH community when I say this week was so much fun! We really want to thank our PanHellenic Council for putting all their time and effort into creating this entertaining and bonding experience.

On March 1st, Alpha Delta Pi held its annual Kickball Tournament on the flag football fields to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House. Eleven teams participated ranging from fraternity members to door guys and bartenders from Broadway and other Lubbock bars. Through a single elimination bracket play, Men of God ultimately took home the first place trophy with Theta Xi coming in second. The ladies of ADPi acted as coaches, umpires, and cheerleaders to create a successful event. A week later, the Lubbock Ronald McDonald House held its 26th annual Red Shoe Shindig at the Mckenzie-Merket Alumni Center with a dinner, dance, silent auction, and live Ronald McDonald appearance. The Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Southwest raised thousands of dollars to continue to provide the house and services to the nearly 2,400 guests that are expected

at the Lubbock location in 2014 alone. The Lubbock location is a seventeen room house that is currently at about 85% capacity. This location was the only branch to be built debt-free and to continuously remain so. Each month the median fifty volunteers, ranging from toddlers to seniors, help prepare meals, clean the house, and play with the children to save the house around $356,000 annually. The families typically stay for two or three nights and are conveniently located near University and Covenant Medical Center. The house allows families that may not live nearby to have a place to stay to spend less time commuting and more time together in a safe haven while their children are getting the treatment they need. More than three hundred RMH charities serve over sixty-nine counties in the Texas which includes the Lubbock house, mobile care unit, Family Rooms in UMC, and Covenant and Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. They also provide additional funding to programs in other non-profit organizations that directly improve the health and well-being of children. Alpha Delta Pi began a partnership with RMHC in 1979, and since then has contributed more than $6 million to the organization. ADPi chapters all over the country hold multiple campus events over the year to raise money, with some of the larger chapters raising around $30,000 in one year. In addition to donating money, ADPi chapters and alumnae associations donate their time and energy volunteering at the RMH houses by providing sisterly support to the families. More information about RMH and ADPi’s partnership can be found at www. rmhc.org or www.alphadeltapi.org. Mark your calendars for Alpha Delta Pi’s next philanthropy event, $5 all you can eat Pancake Night on Wednesday, April 30th and the glow in the dark 5K next semester.

THE ETHICS OF ADDERALL Most people know someone who uses Adderall, or have used it themselves. Adderall is a prevalent drug on many college campuses.

The drug is used as a performance enhancer, mostly by students during studying and test taking.

to pay. During midterms and finals season, Adderall can be bought up to $20 a pop.

CAROLINE CAMPBELL

Kappa Kappa Gamma Carolin e is a s ophomore studying public relations. You may contact her at caroline.campbell@ttu.edu.

The drug is a pharmaceutical drug used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy. It is prescribed by doctors to people to help keep their attention span. Comprised of different quantities of several different dextroamphetamines, the drug is usually taken in a tab or pill form. There are many side effects, including a heightening of awareness, energy and attention. Adderall also gives the user a compulsion to complete a task and be very efficient. There are many effects of Adderall that can be helpful when taken the right way, by people who have ADHD. However, the drug is now so popular with students on college campuses everywhere, that the ethical use of the drug has become very skewed. In a recent study on Texas Tech students, research showed that out of 150 study participants admit to have used Adderall at some point. Of this 50%, only 12% have a prescription from a doctor. This statistic has since grown, as the drug popularity has increased with college students. The drug is used mostly by students to enhance performance in the classroom. Students take Adderall to help them stay more focused while studying and to stay up later. Students who have a prescription sell their medication to students who are willing

While Adderall is taken by many students to enhance performance in school, the drug can also be mixed with alcohol, energy drinks and other substances to increase its effects. Adderall is a form of speed, which increases brain activity and boosts energy. Adderall can be crushed and snorted by the user to enhance their buzz. However, the substance can be dangerous if mixed with depressants, such as alcohol. Those who mix alcohol and Adderall to stay awake longer, generally also experience an array of mixed emotions. It is a common conception that the mixing of these substances can cause the user to say things that they would not normally say, and become very emotional and vulnerable. Also, people with fatal heart conditions and bi-polar disease who take Adderall un-prescribed can undergo dangerous health side effects. Many students are unaware of the fact that if they sell Adderall to a student and that student has a stroke or heart attack and dies while on the drug, then the dealer could face between 3-10 years in jail. While this drug may seem harmless, it is important to remember that it should not be taken lightly. If the drug is abused, like any other substance, there could be serious consequences. So the question remains: Is the use of Adderall ethical? For people who have ADHD, I would say that most people would agree that it is completely ethical for them to use the medication that is necessary to help with their deficiency. However, many students say that the use of Adderall by people who do not have a prescription can be defined as cheating. The drug is known as a performance enhancer, which many students deem unfair to be used by those who do not have ADHD. So, is Adderall considered cheating? Is it really ethical for students with Adderall prescriptions to make a profit off of the drug by selling it to other students? Is it ethical for students to mix the drug with other substances to enhance their buzz? These are the questions to consider the next time you think about popping an Addy.

TEN TIPS TO START YOUR SUCCESSFUL FUTURE they will come in handy.

7. Know where to get the cheapest meal possible. Being in college, we all know money can be hard to come by. Knowing of places that offer cheap meals can save a lot of money especially if you live in the dorms and don’t have a kitchen. 8. Know how to balance your checking account because your parent will get mad if you account is overdrawn. I know for myself that I have gotten a phone call about my account. Check how much you have before you start spending money that’s not there. 9. Know how to do laundry and ironing. This is something that you should know how to do before you get to college, but it seems that that’s not the case for a lot of college students. Learn how to do your laundry because it is something you will have to do for the rest of your life. 10. Know how to manage your time. Managing your time is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. It will help you keep everything else in line. You are in good shape if you know how to do these, but for those of us who are lacking a few its better to start sooner than later.

Ten things you should know how to do before you graduate. Most college students think they are prepared until they find out they cannot accomplish basic things like: writing a resume, changing a tire and knowing how to write an email properly.

Before you graduate college there are at least a hundred things that you should know how to do, but here are ten that will give you a good start to a successful future. 1. Have a good handshake. You never know whom you might meet or have to introduce yourself to. Make sure your handshake is firm while maintaining eye contact. 2. Know how to write a resume. Having a well-written resume has a huge impact on whether you will get the job or not. 3. Know how to address and write a letter. After an interview for a job position, it is always a responsible choice to write a letter thanking them for their time. 4. Know how to write an email. The way a person writes an email says a lot about who they are. Always make sure to address the person first, then start writing your email with a nice statement like, “I hope you are having a good day”. 5. Know how to change a tire. I learned this one the hard way during my spring break. If you don’t already know how to change a tire, learn because it will save you two hours of waiting on someone else to come and change it for you. 6. Know how to jump-start a car. You never know when you may need to jump your car or help someone else jump his or her car. Always have jumper cables because

6 TIPS FOR PAINTING THE PERFECT COOLER 500 words on

www.theodysseyonline.com

Cooler-painting season is coming up ladies! Whether you are painting a masterpiece for yourself for spring break or your frat daddy’s spring formal, you’re going to want to hang onto these tips to help get you through the frustration that comes with painting the perfect cooler.

cooler. Go ahead and print all your stencils and practice drawing what you want to paint. Get creative and personalize the cooler as much as you can! You want it to stand out on the beach with all the other. Pinterest or “The Cooler Connection” Facebook page are great places to start for ideas.

The most important piece of advice I can give you is to make sure you preplan. Don’t just jump right in one day with some paint and a few ideas in your head! Make sure you know exactly what you are doing before you even pick out your cooler.

Now you can finally start painting! Acrylic paints will be your best bet. Make sure to also pick up some paint pens because they will be your best friend in the fine detailed areas.

First things first is you need to pick the perfect cooler. Make sure it has a fairly smooth surface all around. Pay attention to handles and wheels because those will get in the way when painting. Once you’ve got your cooler it is most important that you sand and prime it. If you just go straight into painting, your cooler won’t last past the first day on the beach without chipping. Get two different types of sand paper: one that is very rough to get the finish off and one that is fine to smooth after. After sanding you will want to prime the cooler with an outdoor, water-proof primer. For a normal sized cooler it usually takes 2 cans. Next while your primer is drying, map out exactly what you want on each side of the

Once your masterpiece is painted and COMPLETELY dry, you will need to prime it with one to two coats of mod podge. When that is nice and dry, spray on a sealer. Gloss sealant will be extra shiny so pay attention to that when buying if you would rather have a matte finish. Let the cooler sit for at least 2 days before you touch it again or start using it so it drys completely. After the cooler is done and dry, fill it with yours or your date’s favorite goodies! Just FYI, bandaids, Pepto and Advil are also great cooler fillers. Have fun with the process! It can be a bit tedious, but it will all be worth it when you enjoy your cooler on the beach or see the look on your date’s face when you finally give it to them.

FORMAL FRILLS Now that spring break has come and gone, I don’t have to be a psychic to know what’s on every Greek girl’s mind. That’s right, it’s formal season! It’s time to jump online and select the perfect dress and accessories. When attending a formal party with your other gorgeous sisters, the pressure of achieving the right look can be nerveracking. Don’t let the jitters set in quite yet; I’m here to help guide you to the ideal formal look. When beginning your quest to the perfect formal ensemble, you must start with the dress and go from there. I suggest a fit and flare frock that will define your waist while allowing you to be comfortable. Formal is a long evening and you won’t regret reaching for the pretty yet comfy dress over the skintight garment. This Topshop dress works great for our purpose and creates a nice amount of oomph with that flouncy skirt. In addition to its adorable shape, the color allows us to go crazy with hues as accents, such as jewelry and makeup. Choosing black may seem safe, but the subtle pattern and sheen gives it a special touch. I don’t know about you, but I have severe difficulty gallivanting around in stilettos all night long or ever, for that matter. I normally like to go for a strappy shoes that secures and keeps my feet in place. I must admit they may be straying a bit on the skyscraper side, but with all the strap security, you should still be able to strut like a pro. Reach for a metallic clutch, like this to-die-for DVF one, and you’ll be ready to add the finishing touches.

7

Your accessories are what should really shine while attending formal. Any girl can acquire a pretty dress, but you will achieve much more than that. You will accessorize Pi Beta Phi your frock with personal style Leah is a senior studying public and flare. First, you must add relations. You may contact her at leah. some color to your ensemble. What better way to do so than hoffman@ttu.edu. the new Kendra Scott Harlow Necklace in Teal? Not only will the necklace spring your look into this hot season, but your “sawrawrity” sisters will be green with envy because you already got your hands on this brand-new bauble. Too much jewelry can look busy, so simply add a large cuff and a dainty pair of matching studs to accompany your statement piece.

LEAH HOFFMAN

Now the time has come for the finishing touches. With a primarily black and gold palette, have a little fun with your lip color. If you are anything like me, you accumulate lots of lip glosses at the bottom of your bag. Reach for either a bright red or vibrant pink gloss to seal the look. Seeing it is gloss, the color will be lively yet sheer. This means your kisser won’t be too overbearing, but just a sweet accent to your overall vibe. Throw a travel-sized hairspray into your clutch for hair touchups throughout the evening. I’ll be the first to say, no one likes fallen curls. You now have acquired the tips you need to attain that flawless formal attire look. This is the time to grab your girls and hit the streets of Lubbock to find the knockout pieces perfect for you. Now all that’s left to do is find yourself a hot date and I admittedly can’t help you with that. May the force be with you, my friend.

You have to pack light and you have to do so for more reasons than you may think! Besides the fact that you will want to buy a boatload of souvenirs and new clothing when you get to your travel destination, everyone studying abroad with you will know that you are on a limited wardrobe. With that in mind, I decided to search for the best way to bring as many clothes as I could in the most organized and compact way possible. The answer is a hiking backpack. Forget rolling luggage and save yourself the struggling by buying a 60-70 Liter backpack. If possible, a bag with numerous compartments and one that molds to your body. I bought a Kelty Red Cloud Women’s 80 for my trip abroad, and it was the best decision I have ever made. This backpack in particular is made specifically for women and straps comfortably around the waist. Don’t worry, guys, Kelty makes bags for you, too! Now, if you’re studying abroad and are completely opposed to bringing a backpack, I have the second best option for you - Compression Sack. The sacks do exactly what the name suggests! Just load up your bulky clothes, pull the straps down the side to push out the air, and voila! Neat little cubes that allow more space and organization in your backpack and/or suitcase. And space is exactly what a student studying abroad needs when living out of a bag for months on end. Besides being a great space saver, they’re great for separating dirty laundry on weekend trips.
