With another great weekend in the past, it’s time to savor every last breath of spring and prepare for summertime. Don’t spend all your time stalking yourself on Facebook. Get out there and live!
Greetings Knight fans! I hope everyone is enjoying April. This semester has been nothing but an absolute blur. I was stalking myself on Facebook a few days ago and couldn’t believe all the exciting events that spring has given me. I feel as if I just woke up from an insane dream that was actually my reality. With only two weeks left in the semester, it’s important to look back on spring and make sure you had the T of your L (time of your life) because college certainly flies by. Two weekends ago, I was given the amazing opportunity to work as press for Ultra Music Festival in sunny Miami. Although only Friday and Sunday were technically sunny, the festival still left me in awe. Electronic Dance Music is a culture that has risen far above the underground. EDM is now a strong part of our generation and, in my opinion, will only get bigger and bigger as time goes on. Ultra Music Festival is one of the biggest EDM festivals held in the U.S., after Electric Daisy Carnival held every summer in Las Vegas. Ultra is a stunning production of lights and sounds. With massive stages, fireworks and dancers all around, it can be overwhelmingly stimulating but ,nonetheless, breathtaking. This year was Ultra’s 16th year in Miami and they did not disappoint. Although they had a few hiccups, such as performers Tiesto, Afrojack and Avicii all needing hospitalization and Canada DJ Deadmau5 playing what some would call a “sarcastic” set, Ultra still had a successful year. Friday was spectacular with legend Tiesto closing out and playing a flawless set comprised of some new big sound dutch and his classic oldies such as “Escape Me” and “Feel It In My Bones.” Then there was Saturday, a day filled with anticipation of rain. Thankfully, the rain held until about 8:30PM, but then it stormed for a a good few hours. I ran for cover to one of the only covered stages, the Carl Cox and Friends Arena. There, I got to witness a cocoon of lights and steam collaborate with the deeb tech house sounds of British legend, Carl Cox. The rain was a blessing in disguise. The final day, Sunday, was a beautiful day filled with sun and amazing performances by DJ Afrojack, Sander Van Doorn and Swedish House Mafia member, Steve Angello. Of course,

4 THE SEARCH FOR SUMMER JOBS Scene on campus

the tips definitely don’t hurt and you’ll have cash right away, after each shift.
Mixed emotions come along with this time of year.
Country club. Many country clubs hire students to work on their golf courses as caddies or beverage cart drivers. You could spend your day driving around a golf cart offering golfers drinks and make good tips, especially if they’ve had one too many.
Spring break has come and gone, the stress of midterms is threatening our sanity and every morning starts out with opening your weather app, desperately hoping for the temperature to magically show signs of spring. On the plus side, the school year is wrapping up and the promise of carefree, warm, sunny days lies ahead. But the end of the semester can only mean one thing, time to look for a summer job. The search for a summer job is one of the most critical moments of your life. A bad job could completely ruin what’s supposed to be the happiest season of the year, while a good job can make for memorable time spent with friends and leave you rolling in cash. For those of you stuck without any ideas of where to work this summer, here are some possibilities to look into. Lifeguard. Yes, the classic summer job, definitely underrated. If you’re a good swimmer, why not take a lifeguarding class and get paid to spend your days at the beach or pool, sitting in the sun? Even better, you’d most likely only be working during the day so your nights will be free to do what you want. Fingers crossed for a cliché summer love with your cute lifeguard co-worker. Server. Serving at a restaurant or bar can be hit or a miss, but if you can find a fun place – even better with outdoor seating so you get to be outside – it could turn out to be a great job. Plus,
Camp counselor. For those of you who love kids, being a camp counselor is the job for you! If you don’t want to be away for weeks at a time, you could work at a day camp. Doing crafts, playing different sports and enjoying nature aren’t bad ways to make money. Similarly, you could try to find a nanny job. You’re often able to make way more money from babysitting than many other jobs. Landscaper. If you don’t mind manual labor in the hot weather, you can work for a landscaping company. It’s probably a good idea to be a morning person, as work often starts early, before it gets too hot. You could also get jobs by starting your own lawn mowing business. Internship. This is a good job choice if you can find one that matches your career interest, as it could help you score a job in the long run. Some of them don’t pay, but at least you’re making connections that might help you in the future. It’s a good way to gain experience and add something to your resume. When it comes to a summer job, the possibilities are endless. There are plenty of jobs out there that can be fun and make for a memorable summer, so don’t settle for a job that makes you dread the day.

SURVIVING FINALS WEEK Learn to manage your stress in a healthy and productive way. Managing your stress during finals week is essential to your overall performance on exams and, more importantly, to your health.

The end of the semester is quickly approaching and you’re getting a little antsy as the prospect of summer nears. But, alas, before you get to ditch your textbooks and start working on your summer tan, you have to get over the final hump of the semester: finals exams. One percent of the semester single-handedly holds 99 percent of the stress. Finals are often the most difficult time of the year and students crack under the stress that coincides with exams. Knowing how to prepare and handle your stress is a crucial part of your success. 1. Get organized. Look at everything you have to do prior to taking your test. Buy an agenda if you don’t already own one, create a study schedule, and stick to it! Making outlines for each of your courses is also extremely recommended. Avoid distractions and focus; turn the television off and take a breather, because you’re going to be in your room for a while.
5
2. Snack. That’s right, you heard me: SNACK. Indulge in the best brain foods you can find. Before an exam, you want to eat foods that are healthy and rich in vitamins. Eating poorly and being a couch potato will make you feel sluggish, which definitely doesn’t help when trying to get motivated for final exams! Exercising releases endorphins which help diminish stress and anxiety. So, the next time you’re feeling out of sorts, grab an apple and go for a jog. Your brain and body will thank you. 3. Relax. Studying is essential to the whole “education” process, but if you’re stressing out, you’re not going to remember what you need to know, come test day. After spending some quality TLC with your books, relax. Go for a walk, hang out with your buddies or just watch the tube. Just breath! 4. Sleep. While you will be tempted to cram everything in when studying: don’t. Your brain keeps working even while you’re asleep and one of its key tasks is taking information you studied prior and cementing it into your memory. Depriving yourself from sleep is depriving yourself of an important part of the studying process – seriously. 5. Reward yourself. After you finish your exam, remember to take a breather and give yourself a break. Go see a movie or buy yourself some new shoes before hitting the books again. When it’s all over, it’s over; let it go. You’ll want to talk about the exam with your classmates, but you need to avoid doing this. This will only stress you out more and keeping your sanity is enough of a reward. Keep these tips in mind before studying for finals and you’re bound to ace every exam. Good luck and happy finals! May the curve be ever in your favor.

and programs and find your perfect match. Go abroad, fall in love – you know, the whole ordeal.
Summertime is quickly approaching and will be here in full force in the blink of an eye. It’s the one time of the year where you can do whatever you want – no rules, no obligations. The only thing you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy your time off from whatever it is that consumes your days during the fall and spring semesters. A lot of college students use their summer months to invest in things that will benefit their future whether it’s backpacking in Europe and aimlessly wandering in foreign countries or a mission trip to Haiti to help those less fortunate. Whatever it is you desire to do this summer, make it count. Here are a few ideas of how to keep busy this summer. Pack your things and venture off to a place you’ve never been. We are still young and have no serious commitments, so take advantage of this! Think of a place you’ve always wanted to go, and go. Spin a globe, put your finger on it and wait for it to stop, where ever your finger lands can be your place of destination. Be spontaneous and take a chance. This is the perfect time in your life to find someplace amazing and indulge in the true pleasure of exploring. If you want to take a trip, but go for more of a learning experience then, hello, study abroad! If you’ve always imagined learning about a different culture then this is perfect for you. Not to mention that you get to move to a foreign country of your choice for months at a time. The best part about studying abroad is the classes you get to take. They aren’t your typical macro, bio chem or business class. You get to learn language, culture, wine, etc. The options are endless and all fun and interactive. So start brainstorming countries
Plan on staying in America? That doesn’t have to stop you from another great travel opportunity. Get an out of state internship! This will not only give you the experience of living in a different city but you will also get to work for a company that could very well be your post-grad employer. If you’ve ever dreamed of working in a big city, this is your chance. It’s the perfect time to research your favorite companies and find out where they are, what positions they offer and, most importantly, when you can start! Although you could do this in the fall or spring, that’s your busiest time of the year. Summer is laid back and filled with nothing but free time. There isn’t a better time for you to take this on. If you enjoy volunteer opportunities, then summer presents another option. Many young adults in their 20s travel to multiple countries to donate their time and volunteer to help those less fortunate then themselves. I can’t think of a more rewarding way to spend your summer. These kinds of experiences aren’t just beneficial to you, but to the people you work with. This is a chance for you to touch someone’s life and make their day that much better. We’ve all needed a helping hand, at some point or another, and this is the perfect way to extend yours. Better yourself, your life and your mind and give back to those in need. If you aren’t into traveling, already secured a local internship or are just plain Zeta Tau Alpha broke, you can use the summer months to find a Kailee is a senior studying full or part time job and interpersonal organizational start saving. It might be the beginning of April, but time flies when you’re having fun, so don’t put off whatever it is you plan on doing this summer. Start brainstorming ideas and planning out different options so you aren’t left in the dust while your roommates are climbing mountains in Europe. IS SUMMER AWKWARD FOR STUDENTS? Summertime is right around the corner, but don’t stress – there are plenty of options!

Many of us don’t really know how to make the best of our summers, so here are a few options for how to make your summer super beneficial!
So here we are, approaching summer at lightning speed. You’re either graduating, well ahead in your major and forced to stay in Orlando or confused. Have no fear, fellow Knights, summertime is a great opportunity for many beneficial things! There are a variety of things you can do during your first summer after college. Taking summer classes is an excellent choice because you can obtain more credits without taking a full course load. Colleges typically allow you to take two courses during the summer, which is only half of what you would normally take during the school year. Students often enjoy being at college during the summer because the environment is much more relaxed and only taking two courses is very manageable. Another option for summer is to get a job. There are many more jobs available during the summer because children are out of school. Mothers often need help with their kids being home, so babysitting is an excellent way to earn some extra cash in the summer. Many children also attend camp during the
www.theodysseyonline.com
summer so being a camp counselor or a lifeguard at a local neighborhood pool are other great options. Typically these jobs pay well and who doesn’t love taking care of cute kids? Being in Florida also gives you other great options for work. You can work at a theme park like Disney World or Universal Studios. There are also perks that come with working at an amusement parking – like discounted tickets! If you don’t feel like working this summer, there’s also the option of studying abroad. Many college students jump at the chance to travel to another country where they receive college credits. This is an excellent opportunity to not only complete your college credits, but to also gain some culture and knowledge on what it is like to live in another country. We often become so sheltered and do not realize how people go about their daily lives in other parts of the world. Studying abroad can give you the opportunity to see amazing new things and experience life in a new way. Volunteering is also a wonderful choice for the summer. I have volunteered at a hospital for many summers and I cannot explain how rewarding it feels to be able to help those in need. There are so many sick people in this world who may never get better, but knowing you can put a smile on their face is one of the greatest feelings. Volunteering over summer break is truly a selfless act. Older individuals are especially grateful when they see young adults doing their part and taking their time to help out. Volunteering may not be your top pick of things to do this summer, but just know that you could really make a difference in someone else’s life just by showing sympathy and giving a simple smile.

THE DOS AND DON’TS OF SOCIAL SEASON
Social season is in full effect, so make sure you’re dressed to impress!

STEPHANIE GOENAGA Zeta Tau Alpha
Stephanie is a senior studying human communication. You may contact her at smgoenaga@knights. ucf.edu.
The semester may be ending in just a month but, thankfully, social season is still in full swing. As we all know, there is one crucial thing that separates socials from any other normal night downtown and that’s a theme. Whether it’s the cliché theme of Cowboys & Indians, Careers, Barbie & Ken or something more along the lines of Things That Start With the Letter P, there are definitely some ground rules that should be taken into consideration when getting ready for the night that everyone will be talking about the next morning. Because, let’s be honest, getting ready is half the fun. 1. It’s okay to be a walking cliché. Socials aren’t exactly Halloween. You don’t have an entire year to think about your outfit. Yes, you can wear a bandana, black leather vest and a $.25 I Heart Mom tattoo on your arm for that biker themed social. Yes, you can tie a plaid shirt around your waist and wear glasses for a hipster theme. Don’t over think it. Embrace the obvious attire.
If you’re given a theme with a broader range of options than biker or hipster, try and stand out. One of the socials I went on where I was most impressed with outfits was a Barbie & Ken social. I saw everything from Bride Barbie, Prison Barbie, Ukrainian Barbie and Mermaid Teresa (the brunette Barbie) to Pilot Ken, Butler Ken and Surfer Ken. Have fun with these themes. They usually make for the most memorable costumes. 3. Don’t empty your wallet. Consider visiting Joann’s Fabrics & Crafts or adding small details from Target or Walmart to clothes you already own. Do not go shopping. Do not buy a costume at Party City. There is an 80 percent chance your outfit won’t look the same once the night is over. You’ve been warned. 4. If you can get out of wearing heels, get out of wearing heels. Why anyone would argue over this is beyond me. Ladies, we suffer enough wearing heels downtown every Thursday and Saturday night. Yes, they look hot, but no one likes being around that girl who’s grumpy because she can barely walk anymore. If you’re lucky enough to have a theme where you can get away with wearing Converse or combat boots, wear them! 5. Stay off your phone. Enjoy your night. Not to get all deep here, but one of the worst things about our generation is how much we live through social media rather than taking the time to look around and really live. Stop stalking everyone’s Instagram photos. You’re all at the same place. Stop checking yourself in downtown. Everyone knows you’re there. And finally, stop tweeting about what a crazy night you’re having, because if you have the time to tweet, it can’t be all that crazy. Just look around you and enjoy the fact that you’re young and free and ridiculously dressed.

WHAT COLTER VICTORY MEANS FOR THE FUTURE OF COLLEGE SPORTS Written By Odyssey Writer Ben Sanders If Kain Colter’s effort to transform college athletics has proven anything, it’s that the public shouldn’t discount someone’s dream just because it seems farfetched. Two weeks ago, the Chicago district of the regional National Labor Relations Board announced that Northwestern football players qualify as employees of the university and can unionize and collectively bargain. For Colter and other members of the All Players United movement, who have worked tirelessly on this case for months, this marked a huge victory. This decision only affects football and basketball players at private Division I universities, so if athletes at public schools wish to unionize, they would have to do so on a state-bystate basis. Colter, the former ‘Cats quarterback, who’s now the leader of the newly formed College Athletes Players Association (CAPA), has previously said he’s open to allowing more sports to be included, in the future. Basketball and football just made the most sense to him as a starting point. While many analysts and vocal protestors believe that the players went through this process for financial reasons, Colter stated from the start that the unionization effort has nothing to do with “pay for play,” and he made this quite clear on Thursday, on ESPN’s Mike and Mike. Instead, Colter is hoping to address the many health and academic issues that players face. With regards to health, Colter said, “Right now the NCAA doesn’t guarantee that any of our medical bills will be paid… as in all sports, injuries are a part of it, and when we are wearing our school colors and sacrificing a lot, we should expect that our medical bills should be taken care.” This whole effort generated a lot of media attention throughout the year, but it would have gained more credibility if people thought they had a realistic chance of winning. Prominent sports journalists and pundits have shut this idea down right from the start, as nothing more than an unrealistic goal. Even Northwestern stated, “Unionization and collective bargaining are not the appropriate methods to address the concerns raised by student athletes.” Nonetheless, after months of going through this legislative process, the players have come out on top, at least for the time being. Northwestern is planning to appeal the decision and a case of this magnitude might make its way up to the Supreme Court.Let’s imagine that after months, and possibly years of appeals, the initial ruling sticks. The result would transform college athletics. All of a sudden, we’d see players at private institutions all over the country start to unionize, under CAPA, and demand better treatment from their universities.Football has received a lot of negative attention, lately, because of concussions. It wouldn’t be surprising if the number of head injuries declined at these unionized schools because players would have more of a say regarding the amount of rough contact that’s allowed in their practices. They might also gain more flexibility with their academic schedules. Colter has stated that the reason he was unable to graduate as a pre-med student was because practice times and class times were in constant conflict. Then, of course, there’s the issue of money. While I’ve already mentioned that money didn’t play a big role behind Colter’s petition, it’s too big of an elephant in the room to ignore.Since they would be considered employees, the athletes would be allowed to collectively bargain for their “fair share.” This is where things get really complicated because there are so many factors to consider. Do superstars get paid more than third stringers? If the system holds for just paying male football and basketball players,
then wouldn’t that conflict with Title IX? One thing that I will foreshadow, is that players would demand to profit from their own names. This past summer, Johnny Manziel was making headline news when there was an investigation into whether or not he was receiving money for his autographs, which is an NCAA violation. In 2013, in his blog for the Washington Post, journalist Neil Irwin pointed out the absurdity of the situation. “I was in college, and I took money for doing journalism: a little freelance gig there, a paid summer internship there, and then I went back to writing for my college newspaper like it never happened. Good thing the National Collegiate Journalism Association never caught wind of it, or I surely would have lost my eligibility to continue on competing as a student-journalist, and the college paper could have faced big time sanctions.”Of course, there is no such thing as the National Collegiate Journalism Association, but Irwin was using it to poke fun at the NCAA and show how they would handle a similar situation, given the current way things operate.I could easily envision a distant future where athletes, like Manziel, wouldn’t be punished for signing a fan’s t-shirt. Then there’s the possibility, if athletes were allowed to unionize, that they would choose to stay in college for four years, rather than leave for the pros early, Over the past decade, there have been dozens of “one-and-dones,” those who leave for the NBA after their freshman season. This has caused problems in college basketball because it means that a program has a hard time maintaining success from year to year. While speculation is fun, it’s going to be a while before we begin to see change unless the case makes it through the appeal process. If so, it will send shock waves throughout the NCAA. Some believe that it’s not a not a matter of if the case will survive, but a matter of when. On Thursday, on ESPN’s Mike and Mike, legal analyst Lester Munson said that there is no question that college sports “five or eight years from now will be very different from what we see today.”

The Undie Classic is a mile long run in your underwear to help collect clothes for Goodwill stores in the Central Florida area. As I grew up watching comedy classics, such as Animal House, American Pie, and Van Wilder, I couldn’t wait for the day to come when I could pack my bags, move out and start the next four years of my life in college. What is closer to a man’s heart than beer, blondes and football season? On top of that, who wouldn’t want to go party every night and hit the pool everyday as we get our first taste of living life completely ignorant of reality; I know I wanted to. As I continued to watch the Hollywood version of what college life entailed, one tradition that always stood out to me as a staple in almost every college flick, has been the naked mile. Of course, that tends to be frowned upon by the University higher ups, but it hasn’t stopped millions of college students from keeping it off their bucket lists. The Undie Classic looks to create an atmosphere that is fun and memorable, not one that takes students out of their comfort zone, so any dress code is acceptable (as long as you’re not in your birthday suit). The event is on April 18 at 6 p.m. It will start and finish at Lake Claire. Admission is free of charge. All Sigma Nu asks is that you bring a valid UCF I.D. and clothes to donate. Lastly, underwear is preferred, not mandatory. Get creative, bring friends, and don’t miss your chance to experience UCF’s newest tradition, The Undie Classic.
