HOK 2010

Carbon Footprint Report In 2007, HOK set a three-year goal to reduce emissions from projects and practice by 50 percent. In 2009, the firm signed the AIA 2030 Commitment, which requires project emissions reductions, sustainable business practices and annual reporting.

Significant Findings

1. Office energy use is going down. As HOK offices move to LEED certified spaces, our offices are becoming increasingly energy efficient.

2. Air travel is up. ACR use matters.

Business air travel soared in 2010, despite increased use of HOK’s Advanced Collaboration Rooms.

3. HOK needs better data collection. As the industry and our clients rely more on hard numbers, our lack of consistent data collection methods is becoming a problem.

Where Is Commuting? Data for employee commuting habits has remained largely unchanged over the past three years. We still recommend locating HOK offices near public transportation, increasing transport option awareness and continuing to offer alternative transportation subsidies.

▪▪The primary factor influencing our energy performance is proving to be a move to a new office, often cutting energy use in half as the new space is designed to meet LEED standards, such as in Chicago, Hong Kong, London and Toronto.

▪▪HOK’s average energy usage is trending down.

Suggestions for Improv ement ▪▪Sub-metering an office would provide a more accurate picture of localized energy usage. ▪▪Live metering with web-based dashboards would clearly show effects of temperature set points, longer hours, lights-out or extreme temperatures, and point to opportunities for improvement.

Summ ary of Findings The AIA 2030 Commitment calls for a 60 percent energy use reduction – from typical building energy usage – in 2010, leading to a 100 percent reduction, net zero, by 2030. Several HOK offices are not on track to meet this target.

▪▪ Each office should analyze how energy is used locally and determine ways to improve performance. In St. Louis, for example, this report and further research have revealed envelope performance problems and potential corrective measures.

▪▪ We should explore ways to improve occupant behavior, including reinforcing workstation shutdown and night/ weekend power-downs.
