This one-year exchange program at Hokkaido University became the most intense and precious period of my life filled with professional and personal growth, new experiences and adventures. Immersed in Japanese culture and surrounded by beautiful landscapes of Hokkaido, I was able to study and travel, learning about Japan, other cultures, and myself. I didnโt hesitate when choosing Hokkaido which is known for its unique culture and nature. Here you can experience all the seasons from enjoying skiing and snowboarding in winter to visiting firework festivals and lavender fields in summer. Also Hokkaido stands out for its delicious cuisine, and I can say that miso ramen and soup curry took a special place in my heart! This exchange program offers a wide range (from intermediater to advanced level) of Japanese language courses, as well as special JLCSP courses that cover various topics from Japanese literature and history to language acquisition and economics. I appreciated the expertise and creative approach of the professors who made their classes both highly informative and enjoyable. You can learn complicated phonetics concepts while analyzing Pokemonsโ names or explore the nuances of Japanese mindset through Japanese poetry and Ghibliโs anime. Additionally, Hokkaido University conducts multicultural communication courses where international and Japanese students meet, communicate, and work on group projects together. It offers you valuable experience of team work, enriches understanding of Japanese mindset and communication style, and helps to find Japanese friends! Moreover, Hokkaido University connects people from diverse backgrounds and gives an invaluable opportunity to make friends from all over the world. Before coming to Japan I could not imagine how many wonderful, open-minded, and enthusiastic people I would meet here. We spent plenty of time studying and travelling together, exploring Japanese culture, and at the same time exchanging our own cultural experiences. I am thankful to all of my friends and cherish memories we made together, they took place in my heart for evermore. Being an exchange student is a dream in my life. Because of my love for Japan and the longing for the life In Hokkaido, from the first, I set Hokkaido university as my target, and I canโt translate into a word to express how glad I am to come here eventually. Although it did have some hard times and difficulties, such as even though I have already learnt Japanese for more than three years, I still couldnโt understand what Japanese say at first. But I realized everything was just worth going through. Through so many times of practice in the classes and talking with friends from Japan and other countries, I can truly say my Japanese has greatly improved, which is the final goal I set before I came here. So itโs hard to perfectly express my appreciation to the JLCSP to give me the wonderful chance only by words. But I can guarantee that I wonโt forget the full-love and full-memories year. My experience in Sapporo has been, to say the least, unforgettable. Iโve had the chance to connect with people that shared the same interests as me, I got to know myself better, and, most of all, Iโve fallen in love with Japanese culture. My stay in Japan was not always easy though and I had to learn to accept that sometimes, things take time. For example, when I first came here, I felt like I had to speak perfect Japanese right away. Obviously, this is not how things work. I have come to understand the importance of patience. And, now, I donโt have this complex towards my language ability anymore. Of course, there are still a lot of difficulties ahead in my quest to improve my Japanese. Yet, I feel like overcoming these difficulties is part of the journey, and I donโt have a choice except to enjoy them. This experience also gave me a glimpse at the depth in Japanese people's hearts. I was lucky enough to hear someone here be completely honest with me, and I can say with confidence that it was one of the most beautiful moments in my life. It might sometimes be hard for me to understand how Japanese people truly feel and to see whatโs behind their smiles (they smile a lot!), but I know now that they actually hide a lot of treasures inside of them. The classes I took were also wonderful. I got to learn about Japanese history, politics and so on. I am deeply grateful for what my teachers taught me. It will forever be in my heart. ใใฃใฝใ

Hokkaido University is a very special place, and I would recommend it to anyone thinking of studying abroad in Japan. I initially chose to apply to Hokkaido University because I wanted to live in the north of Japan. I did not have strong opinions on the JLCSP programme on paper, however now I feel that it was perfectly suited to me. There is a fair amount of freedom in the subjects you can choose so you can, to a certain extent, build your timetable to suit your interests. There are lecture courses in both Japanese and English, lessons in Japanese alongside Japanese students which aim to foster multicultural exchange and understanding, as well as lessons in Japanese that focus on language skills. For those who are placed in advanced level classes, the lessons were geared towards real world applications of language skills, and while some may find it disorientating to learn without vocabulary and kanji lists to learn, to me it felt refreshing and motivating to apply my skills rather than language existing in the realm of theory. There is also the option to join courses for the Japanese students, dependent on language ability and permission of the teacher running the course, however this is usually only recommended in the second term for those on a full year exchange. The freedom and practicality of the course is to me its biggest asset.

Studying abroad at Hokkaido University for a year was one of the most fantastic adventures of my life. Not only did my Japanese language skills improve, but I also made friends from various countries and created countless precious memories. I have always been fond of Japanese culture, and studying in Japan was a dream come true for me. When I got the opportunity, I chose the Japanese Language and Culture Program and embarked on a one-year study journey at Hokkaido University. The university's vast campus, surrounded by beautiful nature, was truly breathtaking. The ever-changing scenery of the four seasons was awe-inspiring, especially the winter snowscape with its overwhelming beauty. Studying amidst such natural surroundings provided me with a peaceful and creative environment to nurture my mind. Moreover, Hokkaido University's education system was of excellent quality, and the professors were kind and supportive. The classes emphasized practical learning and discussions, giving me the opportunity to develop my ideas and skills. During my study abroad, my friends and I engaged in various activities together that were too numerous to recount. We enjoyed drinking parties, karaoke, sports, traveling, hanami (cherry blossom viewing), and going on road trips. In the dormitory, we stayed up late watching movies, anime, playing games, and just casually chatting and laughing, creating unforgettable moments. Traveling to different places with my friends and capturing memories in photographs was something I loved. The time spent with my friends during this study abroad experience is something I will cherish forever. Japanese became our common language throughout this journey. Speaking Japanese every day, it now feels like a second mother tongue to me. Throughout this one year, I had the opportunity to study in a wonderful place, meet amazing people, and create beautiful memories. There were a few surprises I had about Hokkaido after I arrived. One was that I had been told that food, especially vegetables, in Hokkaido are relatively cheap. Unfortunately, while I donโt know how expensive food is in the rest of Japan, buying ingredients is, in my opinion, expensive. Eating at restaurants, however, is reasonably affordable, and I recommend that anyone who comes to Hokkaido try lots of different places and enjoy the food culture while you are here. Another surprise I had was that Hokkaido is not very accessible in many areas if you donโt have a car. While public transport is pretty good, there are several areas which can be tricky to get to if you donโt have a car. If you want to explore these parts of Hokkaido, getting an international driverโs licence so that you can hire a car, or joining a club that will go on group trips may be a good way to plan for it. Currently, the shinkansen line from Hakodate to Sapporo is being built, and once it is finished, Iโm sure Sapporo will feel more connected.

Winter in Sapporo is something I will never forget, as day-to-day life revolves around the snow. Although there were times I wished I could go out to get groceries without snow boots and five layers of clothes, the snowy weather was also magical and peaceful, and I am glad I got to experience it at least once in my life. Sapporo is a friendly city with a lot of greenery, which makes it easy to live in and feel at home in, as well as having a thriving cafรฉ culture perfectly suited to anyone who loves coffee or hot chocolate. The Hokkaido University campus is also very green, and astonishingly big and central. Even though Sapporo is a large city, it has some of the atmosphere of the countryside, both in the sense of community you can gain, as well as the focus on farming and local produce. There are also many festivals in Sapporo itself and Hokkaido as a whole, not just the snow festival, and so long as you are proactive, lots of local clubs and events to get involved in.
