EXPEDITIONS

Supporting Audubon in advancing sustainable development in the Americas Holbrook Travel is a supporting partner in Audubon’s new strategy for conservation in Latin America and in the Caribbean. The Neotropical Realm alone has 41% of all bird species on Earth and the region’s biodiversity is at risk due to habitat loss and environmental degradation. Flyway Expeditions, the travel programs branded under this initiative, are designed to help protect key target areas for migratory and local species. Participants on designated Flyway Expeditions support guide training and have a direct economic impact on local communities, help preserve IBAs, and nurture an emerging ecotourism industry. 9

Our field staff & expert guides At Holbrook, we understand that the caliber of your local guide can make a great trip truly extraordinary. Our birding guides are not only experts in bird identification and behavior, they are also resourceful, passionate, and attentive. Here are just a few of these dedicated professionals. mario córdoba

COSTA RICA

Erick Guzman

Mario has been a nature guide in Costa Rica for more than two decades. During this time, he has expanded his knowledge and appreciation for the country’s unique features and introduced many visitors to its beauty and biodiversity. He spent his early years exploring nature with his local Boy Scout troop. This was the onset of his lifelong passion for the natural world. He received professional training in ecotourism from the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica.

I call Mario ‘the bird whisperer’ because there were so many instances when we heard and saw nothing, but Mario showed us a certain wren, sparrow, hummingbird and so many others.

NATHAN FORBES

BELIZE

Erick grew up in the Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica, in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí. He has served as a guide on rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, and hiking tours and has worked at the Organization for Tropical Studies’ La Selva Biological Field Station. During his time there, he got to refine his leadership skills, observe and learn about tropical research being done at the station, and interact with international scientists and students. Erick is a passionate birder who loves discovering new species all over the world.

14

Erick was phenomenal. Very knowledgeable, top notch at finding birds, great sense of humor, can’t praise him enough. I’d take another Holbrook trip with Erick in a heartbeat.

Pablo Najarro

Nathan was born in the tranquil village of Sittee River in southern Belize, and moved to Belize City at age 13 to attend high school. He started as a driver in Belize’s fledgling tourism industry, and followed this path to complete guide certification training, as well as professional development courses on the country’s natural history and ecotourism. He now considers himself a naturalist and avid birder, and loves being able not only to learn every day, but also share his home country with visitors.

Nathan Forbes was excellent. Very knowledgeable and experienced on surrounding land and organisms.

COSTA RICA

GUATEMALA Pablo grew up on his family’s farm in Guatemala, where he gained an appreciation for the nature and wildlife around him. He has worked as a tour guide since his graduation in 1999, and continues to expand his career by attending Audubon trainings, teaching seminars on Maya culture, and conducting research on bird species in Guatemala. Inspired by sharing his passion for birds with the Guatemalan people, Pablo founded the country’s first bird club, the Petén Birders Club.

Pablo was exceptional in his knowledge of birds, their features, calls, and flight patterns. He was funny, focused, and ready to assist everyone at all times.

David Bacab

Mexico

Venicio “Beny” Wilson

David is a native of Celestún, Mexico. He has a degree in Tourism Administration and has studied natural sciences, including attending a variety of specialized courses in both Mexico and the United States. His studies have included programs at Cornell University and at the Institute for Bird Populations in Yosemite National Park. He is actively involved in avian studies throughout the Yucatán Peninsula, such as banding and monitoring bird populations, distribution studies, and training local people for work at the various reserves.

David was absolutely amazing! He was so knowledgeable about not just birds, but also Mayan culture and cuisine and history.

Cristian Daza

Colombia

Beny is a certified Panamanian interpretive guide with a specialty in birding. Growing up in the Caribbean province of Bocas del Toro exposed him to nature early on, but he credits his father and grandfather for teaching him to really observe, appreciate and respect nature. He studied biology at the University of Panama, and his mentor began teaching him about group dynamics, birding and leading groups in the field. Although Beny enjoys educating visitors on all things Panama, birding groups hold a special place in his heart.

Beny was a multi-tasker extraordinaire: seeing, hearing, feeling and calling the birds and attending to his tour group flock.

Edwin Pérez

Cristian is a Colombian naturalist and expert birder. His in-the-field experience includes many years spent working as a birding guide in the Otún Basin where he grew up. He also worked as a birding and naturalist guide in Los Nevados National Park and Otún-Quimbaya Fauna & Flora Sanctuary, where he assisted and participated in ongoing wildlife studies. As a member of the Yarumo Blanco Communitarian Association, he continues to devote himself to community initiatives geared at growing ecotourism and birding in his country.

Cristian has an excellent knowledge of the local bird life, and other wildlife, including an amazing ear for recognizing bird sounds.

panama

COLOMBIA Edwin is a naturalist guide and an experienced birder. He has honed his excursion-leading skills over many years while serving as the resident naturalist for several different eco-lodges in Ecuador. Edwin credits his big brother with teaching him to appreciate nature and helping him to develop his birding skills. In addition to leading groups throughout Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands, Edwin also teaches environmental education classes at a school foundation in Quito called Pan y Miel.

Edwin did a great job of keeping the group tight, and created a great atmosphere of everyone helping each other to see every bird, as much as possible. 15

DG Giovanna Holbrook came across a large forested property in the Sarapiquí region that was E & in danger of being timbered. Standing before a fallen Almendro tree, she knew she must place a deposit on the property immediately. Thanks to her unwavering vision and devotion, today this once-endangered forest is a private 500-acre rainforest reserve and one of the country’s first ecolodges.

RE

GATEWAY TO THE RAINFOREST Located just two hours from San José, Selva Verde provides easy access to the magic of the rainforest. More than 450 avian species have been recorded here, earning the lodge recognition as one of the country’s top birding hotspots. Of particular note are the reserve’s towering almond trees, which provide important habitat for the endangered Great Green Macaw. Selva Verde’s beautiful, simple, and comfortable rooms are incorporated into the rainforest on elevated wooden platforms and covered walkways that blend in with the natural surroundings. The lodge is also fully equipped for presentations and lectures, and its proximity to the world-renowned La Selva Biological Station makes it convenient to arrange special visits.

Fiery-billed Aracari

North America & the Caribbean For those living in the United States and Canada, the avian treasures in our own backyard may easily be overlooked when we dream about visiting the far-reaching corners of the world. But thanks to the vast and varied landscapes of North America and the Caribbean islands, many surprising and spectacular species can be found, even close to home. Search for puffins along the craggy coast of Maine, wander among the Maya ruins of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico, or step back in time on a visit to Cuba, where you may spot the smallest bird in the world, the Bee Hummingbird.

Central America As the bridge between two continents, Central America forms a critical flyway for migrating birds while also showcasing its own native avian gems. The region holds great ecological diversity despite its relatively small size, with habitats ranging from lowland tropical rainforests, marshes, and coastal mangroves to premontane cloud forests, volcanic mountains, and high-elevation páramo. Hike the renowned Pipeline Road in Panama, visit one of the Organization for Tropical Studies’ research stations in Costa Rica, meet with local community conservationists, or go birding among the Maya archaeological sites of Belize and Guatemala.

South America

Africa & Beyond

South America is bursting with iconic locations, each distinct from the next and all with their own unique avifauna. Birders can explore the expansive Amazon rainforest, sky-scraping Andean peaks, glacier-studded Patagonia, and the otherworldly Galápagos archipelago, not to mention tropical wetlands and desert plateaus.

For many people, Africa calls to mind safaris and game drives. The continent is famous for its “Big Five” mammals, but the bird life is equally enticing. Bird the Highveld grasslands, canyons, and bush plains of South Africa, witness dazzling flocks of flamingos numbering in the millions in Tanzania, or venture to Madagascar, where more than a third of species are endemic to the island.

Seek out some of the 130-plus hummingbird species in Ecuador (more than any other country), examine the endemic finches and mockingbirds that inspired Charles Darwin, view immense penguin colonies along the coast, or watch majestic Andean Condors soaring over Machu Picchu in Peru.

Further afield, head to Iceland to look for North Atlantic and Arctic species as well as North American and European migrants amid the picturesque scenery, or choose from among our various other destinations to craft your own perfect birding experience.

What our leaders and planners are saying We’ve worked with myriad organizations, Audubon chapters, clubs, and individuals leaders to plan memorable birding expeditions for their groups. Here’s what some of those travel planners and leaders have said about their experience with Holbrook.

This trip was spectacular! It was so nice to be in our bubble and feel relaxed and enjoy nature. We had a fabulous time. This was the first neotropical birding experience for most of my group and they already want to make plans to return! Jill Hays Costa Rica, 2022

I think Holbrook does a great job of organizing and assisting with these trips. The logistical details are taken care of so I don’t have to worry about them.

My personal goals were for participants to enjoy the birds, history and culture of the Yucatan. All goals were met.

The trip was outstanding in every way! I was looking for a diverse birding experience, visiting a variety of habitats, and this objective was generally met quite well. I also appreciate the opportunity to see up-close birds at feeders, at breeding leks, and at bird blinds!

Jody Enck Cayuga Bird Club Colombia, 2021

Brian Rapoza Tropical Audubon Society Mexico, 2022

Stephen Hoffman Merlin Birding & Nature Tours Ecuador, 2022

Overall, the trip was excellent. As trip leader, I am impressed with the level of professionalism and support provided by Holbrook through the entire planning process and on the trip. Chris Eberly Chile, 2022
