Dear friends and travel leaders,

I’m excited to share this 2023-2024 Group Travel Planner with you now, at a time when travel is making a solid rebound. I’ve been grateful and amazed at the growth and recovery we’ve experienced so far, and I feel optimistic as we look ahead to the future.

In particular, we’re already looking ahead to 2024, which marks an exciting milestone for Holbrook Travel — we’ll be celebrating our 50th anniversary! This landmark occasion commemorates five decades and two generations of pursuing our mission of creating a true connection between our travelers and the communities and environments where we operate. These long-standing connections are without a doubt what make this anniversary truly “golden” for us.

We invite you to peruse this catalog to find inspiration for your organization’s travel programming and join us in making 2024 a year to remember. In these pages, you’ll find exciting new program offerings — such as the Primate Quest & Classic Safari in Rwanda and Uganda (page 41) and A Taste of Panama: Canal, Rainforest, and Culture (page 28) — as well as perennial favorites like Preserving Paradise: National Parks & Private Reserves in Costa Rica (page 27) and the Mystical Migration of the Monarch in Mexico (page 23). At the core of all we do is a deep commitment to sustainable travel and a love of learning. Each of these programs is carefully designed with these values at their core.

Keep in mind this is just a selection of the types of programming we offer; you can view more sample trips and our full range of destinations on our website. These itineraries can also be tailored to support your organization’s mission statement and special projects. Together, we’ll create the ideal experience for your travelers. Travel with a purpose

Since our founding, Holbrook has been at the forefront of ecotourism and sustainability. We are dedicated to fostering best practices of ethical travel: conserving the environment and local natural resources, and improving the well-being of local communities in all our destinations. Every journey offers the chance to build bridges, in support of a better world.

OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

We make every effort to work with locally owned lodges, tour providers, organizations, and guides that uphold these standards.

We actively seek out information that affects the communities and environments we visit, and we aim to educate travelers about local and global conservation efforts in order to cultivate richer, more meaningful connections for both travelers and locals alike.

Since 2007, we’ve partnered with ClimateSafe to easily allow our travelers to offset the carbon emissions produced during their journey. The ClimateSafe program supports renewable energy, energy efficiency, and forestry projects, both in the United States and abroad.

FOUR PILLARS OF SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL

Practicing sustainable initiatives in the field comprises four categories: local community, cultural heritage, environment, and biodiversity and wildlife. The goal is to minimize negative impact and maximize positive return for local people and environments in the region.

HOLBROOK SUSTAINABILITY POLICY

We know sustainability is as important to our travelers as it is to us. Whether visiting a city, a rural village, ancient ruins, or a rainforest, it is possible to do so responsibly by designing travel programs that are mindful of the potential social and environmental impacts.

Our programs follow the principles defined by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). In partnership with our suppliers and field partners, we are committed to:

• Maximizing social and economic benefits to local communities and minimizing negative impacts

• Providing education and training externally and internally

• Integrating sustainability where possible throughout our programs

• Conserving biodiversity, ecosystems, and landscapes

• Reducing our carbon footprint and raising awareness about climate change

For many years, we have participated in sustainable global travel by collaborating with and supporting local conservation projects, nongovernmental organizations, and community-based programs that advance conservation and sustainable development.

During his time there, he served as a field assistant and in doing so gained an immense knowledge on the flora and fauna of the cloud forest. He transitioned to guide work, and has been leading programs throughout Costa Rica since 1998.

He was absolutely excellent. Professional, caring, and an allaround asset to the experience.

JimmY trEJos COSTA RICA

Jimmy Trejos first fell in love with nature at a young age, when he followed his dad, an agriculture professor, through a “fairy tale” forest on a local farm. From that moment on, he was involved with environmental education, from elementary school to college. He started his career as a research assistant at La Selva Biological Station, and has worked both as a guide as well as a field assistant. He loves all subjects of wildlife, and sharing Costa Rica’s natural paradise with travelers.

Over the years, he has volunteered in research and conservation projects involving rare bird species with organizations such as the Peregrine Fund, the Belize Bird Conservancy, and the Belize Raptor Research Institute. Later, Roni began teaching classes as well, taking his love for tourism to train others around the country.

Roni was absolutely wonderful in birding, leading, organizing, and personability..

Pablo grew up on his family’s farm in Guatemala, where he gained an appreciation of the nature and wildlife around him. He has worked as a tour guide since his graduation in 1999, and continues to expand his career by attending Audubon trainings, teaching seminars on Maya culture, and conducting research on bird species in Guatemala. Inspired by sharing his passion for birds with the Guatemalan people, Pablo founded the country’s first bird club, the Petén Birders Club.

Pablo was an outstanding leader, and a pleasure to be with. “

Selva Verde Lodge & Reserve

In 1984, during the course of running an expedition in Costa Rica, Giovanna Holbrook came across a large forested property in the Sarapiquí region that was in danger of being timbered. Standing before a fallen Almendro tree, she knew she must place a deposit on the property immediately. Thanks to her unwavering vision and devotion, today this once-endangered forest is a private 500-acre rainforest reserve and one of the country’s first ecolodges.

GATEWAY TO THE RAINFOREST

Located just two hours from San José in the heart of Costa Rica’s Sarapiquí canton, Selva Verde provides easy access to a magical world of towering Almendro trees, mantled howler monkeys, and Keel-billed Toucans.

The lodge’s beautiful, simple, and comfortable rooms are incorporated into the rainforest on elevated wooden platforms and covered walkways that blend in with the natural surroundings.

Selva Verde is also fully equipped for presentations and lectures. The air conditioned conference room seats up to 200 people and contains presentation equipment and wireless internet. Additional classrooms and meeting space are also available.

SUSTAINABLE SELVA VERDE

The Certification for Sustainable Tourism Program (CST) was created by the Costa Rican government to promote sustainability in the tourism sector. As one of Costa Rica’s pioneering eco-lodges, Selva Verde Lodge is proud to carry the CST certification for continued commitment to the local environment, wildlife, and community.

S ARAPIQU í C ONSERVATION L EARNING C ENTER

The Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center (SCLC) is a nonprofit organization established in 1993 with the aim to bring visitors together with local people for mutual exchange through cultural activities and service projects. The SCLC’s programs benefit local residents and include a semi-public library that is part of the National Library System, technology classes (as part of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Telecommunications), English classes, and many ad hoc programs.

Hundreds of millions of Monarchs fly along the Gulf Coast, or across the Gulf of Mexico, to eventually reach the belt of high volcanic mountains which stretches across the southern end of the central Mexican plateau. TRIP A CTIVITY LEVELS

To ensure that travelers are able to select a program best suited to their capabilities, we label each itinerary with an activity level according to standards of physical difficulty, on a scale of 1 to 5 (level 5 being the most difficult). The main criteria for a rating level includes the amount of walking or hiking, the degree of difficulty (conditions), the duration, and expected weather conditions. These are general guidelines, so participants should read the itinerary descriptions carefully and consult with our representatives if they have any concerns.
