Holden Street Theatres’ Edinburgh Fringe Award ‘17 and Unpolished Theatre in assoc. with The Pleasance Theatre Trust present In an East London Tower block, five characters - Granddad, Jamal, Kel, Terry, and Reiss - open the doors into their lives, connected by blood, love, illicit substances, anger, and a whole lot of heart. In this gritty, darkly funny, in-your-face production, language is king - Londoner street talk, cockney slang and Shakespearean poetry are brought together to explore London’s working-class population. Strap yourself in, because with Flesh & Bone you’re in for a wild ride. Unpolished Theatre’s new production, written by Elliot Warren was a smash hit at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe, winning multiple awards including a Scotsman Fringe First, receiving over ten four- and five-star reviews, and enjoying a completely sold out run.

Gilded Balloon & Redbeard Theatre in assoc. with Holden Street Theatres present The Mediterranean, 2017, rough seas. An ageing fishing boat is sinking fast, under the weight of refugees. As it dips lower in the water, one young Syrian is panicking. She can’t swim, and she’s six months pregnant... Boasting ‘perfectly-pitched performances’ (Scotsman) Borders is the fourth in Naylor’s ‘brilliant’ (The Guardian) Arabian Nightmares series. A massive Edinburgh hit, it won both the Best of Edinburgh and Fringe First Awards, and received 21 five and four star reviews. Moving and amusing, Borders attacks our response to the refugee crisis by contrasting the life of a Western paparazzo with a Syrian street artist. Naylor’s ‘Echoes’ won Adelaide Fringe Best Theatre Award ‘16, and ‘Angel’ won Best Theatre and Critics’ Circle Awards ’17.

House of Sand and Holden Street Theatres present How do we pedal through life and peddle our wares? Where do we build our personal castles, are they built of bricks or bodies? Questions of transience and belonging, home and away thread through a hive of strangely interconnected questions and musings, from the silly to the sublime. Award-winning Eliza Sanders uses a patchwork of spoken word, dance, song and a plethora of sounds, woven with a thread of inspired genius to create a profound experience. Pedal: With only a jumper and her body Eliza fashions shapes that rattle your cerebellum. Castles: All at once intimate, quintessentially Australian, randomised and unbelievably funny, replete with humour, intelligence, contemporary themes, sex appeal and genuine human talent.

TWO FESTIVALS AND A FRINGE In response to the call for “more great shows from Holden Street” and the heavy impact the Adelaide Fringe going annual has had on the attendance of shows throughout the year, Holden Street Theatres will bring the same calibre of theatre as it presents in the Adelaide Fringe to the Adelaide Festival of Ideas and the Feast Festival in 2018. The Adelaide Fringe will see another incredible line up of local, international and national work headlined by the HST EdFringe Award winning show; ‘Flesh & Bone’ written by Elliot Warren which garnered more stars than the Milky Way. Holden Street Theatres and the Traverse Theatre in Assoc. with the Adelaide Festival of Ideas will present ‘Locker Room Talk’ written by the incomparable Gary McNair (‘A Gambler’s Guide to Dying’) as the headlining performance piece of the festival and in support of the production there will be visual and digital arts presentations at the venue. Directed by Orla O’Loughlin (Artistic Director of the Traverse Theatre) ‘Locker Room Talk is one of the most powerful and beautifully crafted pieces of theatre to come out of Edinburgh in the past 10 years. It fits perfectly with the AFoI Art=Ideas Program and will launch the new Rapid Response Theatre initiative at Holden Street. House Of Sand and Holden Street will partner once again to bring you ‘Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again.’ written by Alice Birch as part of the Feast Festival. LOCKER ROOM TALK BY GARY MCNAIR
11 – 18 Jul The Studio
UK/AUS VERBATIM/POLITICAL
M 75 mins
Holden Street Theatres in assoc. with the Traverse Theatre and the Adelaide Festival of Ideas present During his controversial presidential campaign, Donald Trump regularly made statements considered by many to be misogynistic and offensive. Can such sexually abusive rhetoric really be accepted as mere locker room talk? Is he simply an individual, or one who speaks to a silent majority? Might it be that our world isn’t as progressive as we’d like to think? Gary McNair wants to think we’re better than this and is having honest conversations with men about women to see if he is right or wrong. The words of these men are performed by a cast of women.
The AFoI’s Art=Ideas program has been created as a platform for artistic presentation of topics presented in the festival and Locker Room Talk will be the headlining presentation of the ‘Arts=Ideas’ program. “From 12-15 July 2018 great achievers and audiences new and old will be warming up in the West End of Adelaide with a 3-day ideas festival celebrating the life of the mind, thought leadership, the role of the public intellectual, and debating the most vexing issues of our times” says festival founder and chairman, former head of Arts SA, Greg Mackie OAM.

REVOLT. SHE SAID. REVOLT AGAIN. 21 Nov – 1 Dec The Studio
AUS THEATRE
M 75 mins
House of Sand, The Old 505 and Holden St Theatres present Revolt. will be a punch in the face wrapped in a satin glove. “I am Completely Spannering you and I am Jumping you and Hiding you and Chomping down upon you. I am Blanketing and Locking you and Draining The Life of you with my Massive, Structured, Beautifully built, Almighty Vagina.” Alice Birch skewers the language and semiotics of both patriarchy and feminism in a play which is equal parts belly-laugh funny and gut-wrenchingly real. Women take their rightful place, centre stage: becoming the aggressor in seductions, demanding what they want from work, and trashing supermarkets and with them the fragile masculine ego. After premiering at Sydney’s Old 505 Theatre, ‘Revolt’ will come screaming into Adelaide just in time for Feast 2018, to revolutionise how you see feminism and theatre. FRIENDS OF
Do you enjoy meeting new people? Do you want to be involved in the community? Do you have a few hours to spare?
Holden Street Theatres is one of Adelaide’s most loved boutique venues supporting the arts industry and offering performances all year round. We are internationally recognised for our high calibre program during the Adelaide Fringe and this is due to the success of the Holden Street Theatres’ Edinburgh Fringe Award. The Award is recognised as one of the most prestigious awards in Edinburgh and is the only award of its kind in the world to offer a tour to the Adelaide Fringe. Through this pathway, we introduce new work and world theatre trends to our own industry and motivate our local artists to create and present theatre in Edinburgh. Our thanks go to our friends and colleagues; the Edinburgh Fringe Office, The Scotsman newspaper and the venues in Edinburgh and to our international producers and arts practitioners who make up the judging panel. We are very grateful to everyone involved especially The Scotsman for allowing us to be a part of their prestigious Award Ceremony every year.
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN VENUE HIRE? 32
Some stand out highlights from the past 10 years of the award are ‘A Gambler’s Guide to Dying’, ‘Bitch Boxer’ by Charlotte Josephine, ‘Bound’ by Jesse Britton, ‘Glory Dazed’ by Cat Jones, ‘Heroine for Breakfast’ by Philip Stokes and ‘Tailor of Inverness – Krawiec z Inverness’ by Matthew Zajak. The Holden Street Theatres’ Adelaide Fringe Award is given in association with the Adelaide Critics Circle to a local company or artist to support them in the development of their work or for performance through the year or the following Fringe. This is the only award of its kind in the Adelaide Fringe that gives back to our own industry in this way. We strive for cultural and artistic significance on a local, national and international scale and we are passionate about theatre. We humbly embrace the title of ‘The Home of Theatre’ and we adore and cherish our loyal audience. Thank you for choosing to see one of our shows, we look forward to seeing you again soon.

A UNIQUE BREW One of the things that gives our ales and stout that unique Coopers flavour and appearance is a process called natural conditioning. To achieve this we add a small amount of live yeast to our beer just before bottling or kegging. This causes secondary fermentation in the bottle or keg which carbonates the beer and eliminates the need for any preservatives or additives.
