HOLEDECK is the natural evolution of the concrete structure It is an ECO-friendly system for concrete structures that proposes a responsible approach to resources consumption, both
ECO
nomical logical
(oikos, “house” and nemein “management”) (oikos, “house” and logos “science”)
Due to its groundbreaking design, it can achieve huge spans between supports with a high level of services. The building conductions and services can expand all through the thickness of the slab while becoming integrated in it. This means that services in cross-sections occupy the same space as the structure itself and thus no additional suspended ceilings are required to hide them.
Holedeck can be assimilated to a bidirectional concrete Boyden beam in which the mass of the section is placed in its most efficient position by removing the useless concrete of it.
HOLEDECK is especially suitable for buildings requiring multiple services as well as big or medium spans, such as office buildings, hospitals, schools or any public, commercial or industrial building.
Why HOLEDECK...? Because it is BETTER: ECONOMICALLY, ENVIRONMENTALLY, TECHNICALLY AND AESTHETICALLY

ECONOMICALLY
WHY would you pay more for something that gives you less?
•
Reduction of built height
A total of 30-50 cm are saved per floor thus reducing all the corresponding vertical building elements. This implies a 10-20 % saving in façades and indoor enclosures as well as a 10-20 % reduction in pillars and load bearing walls.
•
Concrete Consumption
Holedeck system reduces consumption of concrete by placing it in its most efficient position.
•
Weight Reduction
The weight of the waffle slab itself is reduced, improving structure behavior, and minimizing dead loads for earthquakes and wind.
4
ECONOMICALLY
•
Reduction of Building Elements
Some elements can be fully eliminated, such as suspended ceilings and technical floors. Some services can be directly supported by the concrete slab ribs thus allowing for the removal of auxiliary bearers.
•
Reduction of Implementation Cost
The simplicity of the system allows the service elements to be replaced and repositioned like in a mecano, minimizing the costs of implementation for the new tenants in both commercial and office buildings. Therefore maintenance or reconfiguration costs are cut and no hindrance is caused to any other activity.

TECHNICALLY
WHY would you add dead loads to your structure in the space where services could be placed through?
•
Building services
Due to its modulated character the system is adapted to accept installations and elements specifically designed for standard modulated ceilings of 60-cm modules. Apart from that, it can also be adapted to conventional geometries and other modulations.
•
Acoustic perfomance
Thanks to the geometry of the waffle slab, HOLEDECK has an excellent reverberance time perfomance. It reduces reverberance time by 1/5 compared to a flat concrete slab. No additional acoustic absorption is needed to fulfill with office and commercial Noise Regulations. The spongy configuration of Holedeck makes sound absorbing function avoiding the installation of acoustic ceilings.
•
Fire resistance
The system meets the requirements of the fire regulations ACI and Eurocode for 120 min only due to the dimensions of its ribs. Therefore, no additional fire protection is required as for the steel-structure frameworks.

TECHNIC TECHNICALLY CALLY
•
Structural perfomance
With HOLEDECK it is possible to cover big spans with a reasonable edge: it is suitable for big spans ranging from SOLID CONCRETE SLAB A 1.075cm2 Ix 13.926cm4 relative inertia 1’0
7 to 15 meter high with a 50-60cm slab edge. Compared to post-tensed systems, Holedeck does not need thick beams, and the services can spread all over the floor.
•
Seismic perfomance
Transmission of horizontal loads: the waffle slabs, like the RIB FROM WAFFLE SLAB A 1.075cm2 Ix 62.330cm4 relative inertia 4’5
rest of bidirectional slabs, are more effective for horizontal requests than a unidirectional one. Bending stiffness: the relative mass inertia of the section compared to the same area of a concrete slab is 18 times bigger. Horizontal forces by earthquake: compared to a conventional waffle slab Holedeck reduces its weight by around 15%. Therefore earthquake strengths are reduced by aproximately 8 to 10%.

ENVIRONMENTALLY
WHY generating unnecessary CO2? Reducing built volume is the most sustainable strategy
•
Carbon footprint reduction
Construction: The most sustainable building volume is the unbuilt one. Reducing height of the building helps reduce the volume of the building built for the same floor space by 20%, with consequent savings in construction and operating costs of the asset. Asset operation: By reducing the height of facade surface, the energy losses are minimized and therefore the consumption of energy, cutting down its impact on the carbon footprint by 20% too.
•
Sick Building Syndrome
Services registrability is improved as no building works are required to clean ducts in the case of need. The usual activity of the building does not need to be stopped either, which allows to enhance the effective occupancy rate of the renters. •
Underfloor heating / cooling systems
By increasing the interchange surface of the slab, the temperature differential can be narrowed and then sustainable heating techniques (like solar panels) can get an optimum performance.

WHY using old fashioned technologies when you can use a new one? •
DESIGN
The lean structure.
Its spongy design reminds of the internal morphology for bones, eliminating waste and achieving the most efficient spatial structures. Holedeck is a Smart Design based on the Systematic Innovative Principles of TRIZ
•
Keep it simple.
Thanks to the geometry of the waffle slab, services are not visible but easily accessible though. This makes the suspended ceiling unnecessary while allowing for a complete registrability of services; fig. 01 bone nano-structure
so it is perfect for installing the whole electric power distribution throughout the ceiling. It is possible to keep an aesthetic and expressive structure with fairfaced concrete by adding dyes to the concrete mass or just painting it afterwards.
•
Plan layout
HOLEDECK is set up in a similar way to other voided flat plate slabs. It provides greater freedom of design for the plant geometry and pillar placing. It is modulated according to a 80cm interaxis so it is dimensionally interchangeable with any voided two-way flat plate slab system with similar features. fig. 02 coffered ceiling

SYSTEMS / SERVICES As abovementioned, the system may use specific service systems (custom-made systems) or just standard systems as the ones designed for 60-cm-modulated ceilings.
In addition to the gaps in the two directions of the horizontal plane which enable an isotropic layout along the whole plane of the slab, the system can be not only easily accessed from below but also from above with a system of raised floors or small passing-pieces for cables (as long as the acoustic and fire regulations allow for). Where required, air is distributed through diffusers likewise embedded in the hollow edge of the slab. The system admits conventional air conditioning indoor units of 60x60 modules. The lower part of the waffle slab may be left uncovered or a removable suspended ceiling may be used.
Garage HOLEDECK allows high-volume air extraction by plenum. Therefore it is suitable for garages and other industrial buildings with high ventilation needs.
Electrical services/ telecommunications Therefore, mechanical services, cables, wiring and electrical supply can be embedded in conduits through the floor or inside a system of removable flat plates. It is likewise possible to place them into a suspended ceiling and thus they would be completely accessible by removing it.
Installation of radiating systems Radiating systems or even cold ceiling systems may be installed underneath the floor included in the compression layer of the slab. 12
HVAC Air may be distributed through conventional semi-flexible conduits or through a plenum system, which requires a sealed suspended ceiling and removable locks in lateral windows. A

BUILDING TYPOLOGIES •
HIGH RISE BUILDINGS
Holedeck implies a reduction of weight and execution costs when compared to solid or post-tensioned slabs, in adition to generating a 20% extra usable surface for the same built volume improving the profitability of the asset. In high seismicity areas, the system can provide a much more stable structural and earthquake resistant solution, with the consequent reduction of costs in case of accident (repair, periods of non-occupation of works, etc)
•
HOSPITALS
Due to the resistance of the structure, any floor distribution change can be proposed to get adapted to the new technological advances in machinery. When talking about earthquakes, in low-rise buildings, the rigidity of the system is even more important than in tall buildings. Besides structural vulnerability, the non-structural vulnerability must also be taken into account, that is to say, alll the deaths occurring by the detachments of false ceilings and other suspended elements. Finally, it is the best solution in the market for Sick Building Syndrome due to its registrability.
•
CAR PARKING
Because of the integration of installations in the thickness of the structure, the reduction of the depth of excavation, the increased distance between pillars and the design qualities of the system Holedeck is the most efficient solution for this typology.
•
RETAIL
Apart from its natural aesthetic characteristics, the Holedeck structure can save up to 50% of the implementation costs for a new renter in your shopping center, due to the simplicity of the services design, becoming an important competitive advantage for your asset.
•
INDUSTRIAL
Change happens, and industrial spaces are probably one of the fastest changing spaces to get adapted to new markets and circumstances. The flexibility of a Holedeck building can let you think of how to adapt your building to your business and not your business to your building.
