At the bottom the helicopter awaits to lift you effortlessly to the top of another peak. Your guide will lead you to the day’s best snow conditions.

At lunchtime, indulge in a gourmet picnic with an unbeatable view then it’s time to do it all again. This is Harris Mountains Heli-Skiing, the perfect escape from the everyday and the perfect way to recharge your senses.

SIMPLE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS

How well do I have to ski to go heli-skiing?

Ideally, you are a strong intermediate skier/ boarder or better, with a sense of adventure. ‘Strong intermediate’ means you can easily ski all the blue runs at your home ski field, and can generally ski the black runs, even if you find them challenging. Harris Mountains Heli-Ski has exclusive access to a wide range of terrain, from easy rolling slopes to challenging chutes and steep valleys for the more experienced.

How does the heli-ski day work?

After an early morning weather check, we collect you from your accommodation and take you to the staging area. Start with a safety briefing covering avalanche transceivers, helicopter and mountain safety, before flying off to the first heli-ski run. All groups meet for an alpine buffet lunch with time to relax. The afternoon is back to the ultimate - more heliski runs.

Do I need powder skis?

Wide-body powder skis or all-mountain skis are the preferred choice for heli-skiing. This style of ski allows you to handle a wide range of snow conditions, faster, easier and with more stability. All of our guides use these and they’re wonderful for those wanting to go longer and harder in more advanced terrain. How long are the runs?

Run length varies depending on the terrain and snow conditions, from 600 vertical metres to as much as 1300 vertical metres of skiing. On average, the run length ranges from 800-1000 vertical metres.

What do I need to bring?

You will need to bring your own ski/board or your hire equipment. You must have warm clothing and safety equipment – a windproof jacket and pants, warm gloves, snow-quality sunglasses/goggles, a helmet and sunscreen.

For everyone who thought heli-skiing was beyond them. Your guide will lead you to terrain suited to your ability for an unforgettable experience.

For all abilities the Experience 4 is the perfect day out for those wanting to take a relaxed approach to the heli-ski day to really enjoy the experience of being out in the mountain environment.

How does the weather affect heli-skiing?

Mountain weather can be harsh and unpredictable. Early in the morning, our Head Guide will evaluate the snow and weather information and decide if conditions are suitable for heli-skiing to operate.

Date change or a full refund will be provided in the event of adverse weather conditions prevent flying on the day.

DAY 1: Arrive Christchurch

Upon arrival at Christchurch Airport, collect your hire car and make your way to the comfortable Ramada Suites Christchurch.

DAY 2: Christchurch to Methven

Depart Christchurch and begin the 90min journey to Methven. Upon arrival, discover the charm of this alpine village nestled amongst the majestic Southern Alps.

DAY 3: Mt Hutt

Today will be the first day of skiing, and what better place to start than Mt Hutt. Winner of the ‘best NZ ski resort’ award for 8 years running, Mt Hutt has the most complete terrain mix of any ski area in the South Island. You may wish to enjoy the afternoon at leisure or purchase entry to the brand new Opuke Thermal Pools & Spa, sourced from the mountains and powered by the sun.

DAY 4: Methven to Lake Tekapo

Hit the Mt Hutt slopes again this morning thanks to your Early Bird Lift Pass. After a morning of skiing, travel towards the picturesque township of Lake Tekapo, where you will check into your hotel for two nights.

DAY 5: Lake Tekapo

Welcome to Lake Tekapo, picturesque by day and dazzling by night. This area is part of a UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve, making it the perfect spot for stargazing. Visit the award-winning Tekapo Springs, consisting of hot purifying plunge pools. For those seeking adventure, Ski the Tasman Glacier offers the perfect optional sightseeing experience from Mt Cook where you explore New Zealand’s largest glacier, blue ice caves and ice formations, all while skiing the longest ski runs.

DAY 6: Lake Tekapo to Queenstown

Depart Lake Tekapo as you continue your journey south to Queenstown. Regarded as the home of adventure, there is no shortage of things to do in Queenstown as you will stay in centrally located accommodation with restaurants and bars all within a short walking distance.

DAY 7-8: Queenstown

Experience the next 2 days skiing or snowboarding Queenstown’s incredible ski runs. Coronet Peak & The Remarkables offer a dream line up for skiers & boarders of all abilities.

DAY 9: Depart Queenstown

Your ski adventure has come to an end as you return your hire car to Queenstown Airport. Time permitting, why not extend your stay in Queenstown to experience some of the thrilling off-mountain adventures such as Shotover Jet.

DAY 1: Arrive Christchurch

Today you will make your own way to the stunning 5 star Fable Christchurch for an overnight stay. The rest of the afternoon & evening is at your leisure.

DAY 2: TranzAlpine to Greymouth

Embark on the world-famous TranzAlpine Train as you traverse the Southern Alps and wind along the walls of the Waimakariri River Valley. Upon arrival in Greymouth, collect your hire car and make your way to Franz Josef, the gateway to the incredible Franz Josef Glacier.

DAY 3: Franz Josef

Enjoy today at leisure. For the best glacier experience, Franz Josef Glacier Heli Hike offers the ultimate experience (weather permitting).

DAY 4: Franz Josef to Queenstown

Depart Glacier Country and head south towards Queenstown. Along the way, you will be spoiled with scenery as you travel through Haast, Makarora, Lake Hawea and into Queenstown.

DAY 5: Queenstown

Experience skiing in Queenstown thanks to your NZ Superpass. Redeem it for a Full Day Mountain Lift Pass at either Coronet Peak or The Remarkables. You may wish to redeem your NZ Superpass for an afternoon activity or credit towards a dining experience.

DAY 6: Queenstown to Mt Cook

Depart Queenstown and take a detour to Wanaka for a lakeside stroll past the famous Wanaka Tree. This afternoon you will arrive into Mt Cook for a special two night stay.

DAY 7: Mt Cook

Enjoy today to explore New Zealand’s tallest mountain with an array of optional activities.

Continue your journey north as you arrive in Methven, home to Mt Hutt Ski Area.

DAY 9: Methven (Mt Hutt)

DAY 10: Methven to Christchurch

Enjoy the morning at leisure before commencing your drive to Christchurch.

DAY 11: Christchurch

Climb aboard the Christchurch Tram for a unique experience combining history and sightseeing before unwinding on the Avon River for an informative punt ride as you glide by the picturesque Botanic Gardens.

DAY 12: Depart Christchurch

Your winter holiday has come to an end as you return your hire car to Christchurch Airport.

SNOW SEASON

Snow & ski conditions are entirely subject to weather conditions. ANZCRO does not take responsibility for snow & ski quality. Generally in New Zealand the ski season operates from late-June to the end of September. ANZCRO takes no responsibility for the start and finish dates for skiing at any New Zealand ski fields.

SKI PRODUCT

All ski products are non-refundable and require full payment at time of booking. Ski conditions are an act of nature and totally beyond our control. ANZCRO urges clients to check weather conditions before departing on any ski or snow dependent holiday as conditions can change at very short notice.

CAR HIRE

Where car hire is included in mentioned packages, this includes collection from airports with basic insurance and excess. During winter, snow chains are mandatory and a local snow chain fee must be paid direct to the car hire supplier at the time of vehicle collection. This fee is not included or covered by ANZCRO and is subject to car hire supplier conditions and policies.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

ANZCRO strongly recommends that you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy at the time of booking. Your Travel Agent will be able to advise and assist you with this. Cancellation fees charged by ANZCRO will not be waived under any circumstances, where travel insurance may have covered you.
