RECOGNIZE YOU ARE A CREATIVE

Hi, we're Holiday Matinee. We've been promoting creativity since 1999 when our founder Dave did PR for bands like Jimmy Eat World and Death Cab for Cutie out of his bedroom in San Diego. While we know there's no magic bullet to creativity and it's most definitely about putting in the time, we want to share a few tips to put yourself in the best position possible. Creativity is totally within your reach, but like anything, sometimes you need a little nudge. Inertia’s a bitch like that. Enjoy the read. There's something in here for everyone — even if it's just a solid reminder.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GOOD COMPANY Being creative is about listening, observing,

If you do cowork, be careful not to fall into the trap of getting so caught up in your own day-today. Don’t treat it like shared office space with strangers. If you do, you’ll miss out on the magic that is having other entrepreneurs, marketers, designers, engineers, and writers to collaborate with. Make at least a small part of your week about connecting with others through lunches, happy hours, or a creative activity.

IF YOU MAKE AN EFFORT TO FIND ART IN THE SEEMINGLY MUNDANE, YOU’RE GOING TO FEEL AMAZING. If you make an effort to find art in the seemingly mundane, you’re going to feel amazing. This I promise. When we get lost in art, it makes us feel special. It’s as if we parceled up the most complex strands of our DNA to share with the world. And if you can bring purpose and meaning to the most ordinary moments, guess what? You are most definitely creative.

Some rarely leave their comfort zone (for the outside world is scary, dangerous and unpredictable) and see none of the benefits. Others walk a middle ground, recognizing travel’s value, but letting excuses and obstacles get in their way. I know that all too well. But if the obstacle is money or time off, the best advice I can give is the same I like for savings in general.

level. We don’t have to forge ahead 24/7 and risk burnout. Playtime can be that break in our routine that helps us create bold, new ideas.

PLAY ISN’T GOING TO GUARANTEE GREATNESS, BUT TOILING AWAY ALL DAY AT A DESK DOESN’T EITHER. So break out the sketchbook and canvas, but don’t forget there are lots of ways to have fun. Grab a six-pack and race friends on big wheels you can hardly pedal. Re-create scenes from your alltime favorite tv shows with photos and videos. And for extra credit, pick an age from your past and spend half a day doing exactly what you would have wanted to do at that age. When I did this for the six-year-old me, it meant pinball and going to the beach to draw in the sand. But it was incredibly freeing and honored a past version of myself that still lives within me. Play isn’t going to guarantee greatness, but toiling away all day at a desk doesn’t either. And guess what — this is going to be way more fucking fun.

YOU’LL ONLY BE CREATIVE IF YOU KEEP EXPOSING YOURSELF TO NEW IDEAS AND EXPERIENCES. It doesn’t really matter how you do it. It could be a traditional classroom or online course, but it could also be learning off YouTube vids and finding fellow hobbyists or an online meetup group. Find someone that

promotion or raise — if something excites you, just go for it because you’ll never know where it can lead. It could mean a career change, meeting interesting new people that challenge your thinking, or an odyssey around the world. Remember that investing in you is never a waste of time or money. But if you are one of those people that needs to justify how you spend every minute of your day, learning is probably the only thing you can do to make sure you stay relevant and have the latest skills in this changing world.

The next time you find yourself not knowing what to do, embrace it. Take in your surroundings. Think your thoughts instead of reading someone else’s. I think you’ll find it wasn’t so much ennui, but an opportunity. Give your brain some quality time to process all the input you’ve given it and it will reward you by showing that it’s a lot cooler than you ever gave it credit for.
