Your guides will paint a vivid picture of the city’s colourful past and people - see the secrets and tell the tales - the culture, crime and politics of Scotland’s capital. This is an experience shared by Mercat historians. Your experience of the medieval city is completed with an optional visit to Edinburgh Castle, which dominates Scotland’s capital city from its great rock. Its story has helped shape the nation’s story. Battles and sieges were fought over it, royalty lived and died within its walls. Secrets of the Royal Mile Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes

The infamous ‘Edinburgh Mob’ loved the ‘entertainment’ of blood, guts and gore. And there was plenty provided! Especially at the Mercat Cross. Let your guide fire your imagination with true tales of gruesome punishment and restless spirits whilst venturing down the closes of Edinburgh’s medieval Old Town. You will have a memorable glimpse into life, death and grisly entertainment before descending into the famously haunted Blair Street Underground Vaults, exclusively with Mercat. As you savour a welcome drink, you’ll weave tales by candle-light in the atmospheric, exclusive, underground cellar. The Ghosts and Ghouls tour is an original, flagship ghost tour. Ghosts & Ghouls

Edinburgh Castle Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of Edinburgh city, from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD). There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crowns in 1603. From the 15th century the castle’s residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison. As one of the most-important strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in many historical conflicts from the Wars of Scottish Independence in the 14th century to the Jacobite Rising of 1745. It has been besieged, both successfully and unsuccessfully, on several occasions.

Scottish Kilt The Kilt is a knee-length garment with pleats at the rear, originating in the traditional dress of men and boys in the Scottish Highlands of the 16th century. Since the 19th century it has become associated with the wider culture of Scotland in general, or with Celtic (and more specifically Gaelic) heritage even more broadly. It is most often made of woollen cloth in a tartan pattern.Although the kilt is most often worn on formal occasions and at Highland games and sports events, it has also been adapted as an item of fashionable informal male clothing in recent years, returning to its roots as an everyday garment. ©Visit Britain
