HOLLAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION DONOR REPORT 2021

MESSAGE FROM HOLLAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION CHAIR & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR We are delighted to share with you this report, celebrating and honouring the

extraordinary generosity of our donors. Holland College’s motto is “You’ll Make It Here”, and the stories highlighted in these pages feature just that – the determination, resiliency, and accomplishments of our students, made possible in part through your support. When you invest in Holland College students, you invest in the future. In January of 2021, the Holland College Foundation launched a new strategic plan to guide us for the next three years. We are focused on excellence and stewardship, and our hope is to continue to build the support of our donor community so that we can grow our investment in students and their educational journeys. Your role continues to be critical, and it has tremendous impact on the success of our students. On behalf of the Holland College Foundation Board of Directors and staff, we thank you for uplifting the next generation of graduates, and for doing what you do to help us sustain a tradition of quality and student support. With sincere gratitude,

Kent Scales Chair, Board of Directors Holland College Foundation

Jo-Ann Campbell-Boutilier Executive Director Holland College Foundation

MESSAGE FROM HOLLAND COLLEGE PRESIDENT As we settle into a new academic year,

I want to extend a heartfelt note of appreciation to all members of our donor community. Your commitment to supporting the success of our students, and our college as a whole, has been a guiding light in a sea of challenges over the past year and a half. Our students, faculty and staff have demonstrated resounding determination, flexibility, and strength in the face of adversity, which has been essential to maintaining our commitment to our mission during the pandemic. With your support of the Holland College Foundation, we have continued to enrich our teaching and learning environments, and we have helped countless students achieve their post-secondary dreams through scholarships, bursaries, and awards. We are also grateful to have been able to help many students through unforeseen crises by removing financial barriers that threatened their academic success. Through collaboration with government, industry, and community, we have implemented new programs and innovative technologies to meet the evolving needs of industry and tomorrow’s workforce. We have established new degree pathways and postgraduate opportunities with our education partners across North America, providing new opportunities for students in pursuit of furthering their education.

As we look ahead, we know that the needs of our students are broader than the development of career skills and goals. We want to provide encompassing supports so our students can grow in our community and lead healthy, empowered, and productive lives. Holland College plans to establish a centre for student success, which will provide supports related to academic discovery, physical health and wellness, mental health, international services, and high student engagement. This will be a safe space for students to learn, to grow, and ultimately to achieve personal and professional success. Together, we are working toward a future with vision and purpose – a future built by, and for, our students. I thank you for the part you play in the success of our students, our graduates, and our community. Sincerely,

Dr. Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald President Holland College

YOUR IMPACT ON STUDENT SUCCESS Ricardo Salvini Tourism and Hospitality Management, Class of 2021

In 2019 Ricardo Salvini completely

changed his path in life. He and his wife Debora made the decision to move from Brazil to Canada with their two daughters, Victoria and Mariana. The beauty and safety of the Island was what drew them to P.E.I. After working in the business sector for many years, Ricardo decided he wanted a change. He was drawn to the International Hospitality and Management program at Holland College, and he enrolled that Fall.

“It was a difficult decision to return to school as a mature student, but I felt so well-supported at Holland College. The environments, equipment, and technology that we learned and trained on were leading edge, and my instructors were both knowledgeable and supportive. When I graduated, I felt fully prepared to enter the workforce.” - Ricardo Salvini While attending school, Ricardo began working as a night auditor at the Great George Hotel in Charlottetown. He eventually became the front desk manager and, upon graduating, has now moved into the role of General Manager. Ricardo feels he has found his true calling in the hospitality sector, and he and Debora plan to make P.E.I. their forever home.

YOUR IMPACT ON STUDENT SUCCESS Laura Perry Heritage Retrofit Carpentry Current Student

After 18 years working in

financial services, Laura Perry, from Tignish, P.E.I., knew that her true passion would be found in a career where she could be active, creative, and hands on. After exploring opportunities in the trades, Laura thought “it’s now or never” and enrolled in the Heritage Retrofit Carpentry program at Holland College in 2021.

“I am so happy to be pursuing my education, here in my home province, in P.E.I. I love the fast pace and hands-on learning and the instructors are awesome.” – Laura Perry Laura recognizes the investments made by donors in the classrooms, labs, and halls that she travels at Holland College every day.

“It is so important that we have the opportunity to learn in environments that inspire us and that we work with up-to-date equipment. That real-world experience and exposure is what will prepare us for when we graduate. I know that donors play a major role in enhancing our experience as students, and I am grateful every day.” – Laura Perry Laura believes she has found her calling and is learning more each day. She hopes to use her specialized skills to some day run her own business.

YOUR IMPACT ON STUDENT SUCCESS Jonathan Charlton Advanced Care Paramedicine, Class of 2021

Jonathan Charlton, born and

raised in British Columbia, became interested in paramedicine after taking a one-day, basic first aid course in high school. He had an affinity for the beauty of PEI, and his decision to further his education through Holland College’s Advanced Care Paramedicine program was a natural one.

“It was a financial challenge to move from coast to coast for the 10-month program, but thanks to the financial support I received from donors, it lessened the strain and allowed me to focus fully on my studies.” - Jon Charlton By furthering his education, Jon has been able to expand his role as a first responder, specializing in cardiac and respiratory emergencies, as well as pediatric and neonatal conditions. He hopes to work in more rural areas of B.C. that haven’t yet had this level of care available in their communities.

INSPIRING PHILANTHROPY Lou MacEachern, a native Islander and Calgary businessman, knows

first-hand the value of an education. Growing up in Hazel Grove, P.E.I., he started on the same path many of his generation did on the Island in the 1940s, and left school at a young age to help run the family farm. Pursuing an education was always on his mind though, and in 1956 he returned to Queen Charlotte School in Charlottetown as what is now known as a ‘mature student’.

“My classmates called me ‘the old man with the briefcase’ – I was 23 years old and in grade eight.” - Lou MacEachern Throughout his life Lou has never forgotten the important role that his education played in creating a fulfilling and successful career, and that, along with his strong sense of community, led Lou to become involved with many charitable organizations and educational institutions across the country.

EARN A CAR In 2015, Lou created a unique opportunity for hard-working Holland College students called Earn a Car. Each year Lou donates a brandnew car and four cash awards of $1,000 each to the Holland College Foundation, to be awarded to five deserving students who are nominated by faculty and staff based on merit, character, and academic achievement.

“Ultimately, I hope to motivate students to keep striving to reach their goals, to roll up their sleeves and put the work in, and to give back to their communities.” - Lou MacEachern Lou also supports Holland College students through the Louis W. MacEachern Bursaries for Aspiring Business Leaders, for which he has donated $70,000 over the last seven years. The Holland College Foundation and Holland College are grateful for his long-time support.
