HOLLAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION DONOR REPORT 2022

MESSAGE FROM HOLLAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION CHAIR & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

We are pleased to share with you our 2022 Donor Report and celebrate the successes that we have achieved this past year, together with you, our donors. With your unwavering support, our teaching, learning and campus environments continue to be renewed and enhanced, providing welcoming and inclusive spaces for students to thrive.

Our scholarships, bursaries and awards program continues to grow, and we helped many students through unforeseen crises by reducing the financial barriers that threatened the continuation of their educational journeys. Your role in these achievements has been vital.

Within the pages of this report, you will find stories that convey the impact your generosity has had on the lives of our students. You will learn about some of our donors and what inspires them to support Holland College students. From planned gifts to annual giving, to special gifts made in honour or memory of a loved one, everyone’s motivation is unique.

We will also feature some of our many staff and faculty, a growing number of whom not only support our students every day on our campuses, but also through their own personal giving. Like you, they are invested in the current and future success of our students.

On behalf of the Holland College Foundation Board of Directors and staff, we thank you for helping to shape the future for our next generation.

MESSAGE FROM HOLLAND COLLEGE PRESIDENT

At Holland College we believe that what we do today, inspires what we do tomorrow. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to you, the many donors of the Holland College Foundation, for inspiring our faculty, staff, and students this past year. Despite the many challenges we are facing locally, regionally, and globally, we came together as a community to support our students, allowing them to fulfill their post-secondary goals.

Holland College students come from diverse cultures, experiences, and backgrounds. Every year we welcome students from within our province and across Canada, and our international student population has grown to now reach 22 per cent of our student body. We strive to celebrate our differences so that we can strengthen who we are as a community. We are committed to providing safe and welcoming learning environments, integrating inclusive teaching techniques, and enhancing services and processes for students with diverse backgrounds.

With your help, upwards of 400 students received a scholarship, bursary, or award, providing fewer financial worries for them so that they can focus on their education. Many students comment that this not only helps them financially, but that it means the world to them knowing that someone believes in them and is invested in their future. These gifts transform students, families, and communities in remarkable ways.

The past year has not been without financial challenges for most of us, and with your generosity, 83 students received emergency financial assistance when they needed it the most.

To some that meant that they had a safe place to live, and for others, it enabled them to purchase necessities such as food and transportation.

Businesses and industries continue to pivot and adapt, and with your support, we are working hard to meet their evolving needs. Our students have access to learning environments and resources that arm them with the latest techniques, trends, and exposure to technologies that are required in today’s workforce. We continue to be innovative in adapting our programs where necessary, and we expanded our offerings this past year to include reskilling and upskilling opportunities. Ensuring that our students continue to graduate with confidence and are ready to successfully enter, re-enter, and progress in the workforce is a critical priority.

As we look forward, we endeavour to broaden our support for students even further. We are committed to ensuring they have every opportunity to achieve their full potential. Thank you for being an important part of the Holland College family.

Sincerely,

EMPLOYEE GIVING

As integral members of the Holland College community, our faculty and staff guide and support students through their educational experience. They seek to bring out the potential in every student, helping them to hone their talents and skills, and providing opportunities for professional and personal development.

“It’s an easy way to contribute to the college, to enrich the student experience, and to celebrate the fact that we have a tremendous place to work.”

- Employee Donor

As they engage daily with students, they know when students are flourishing, and when they are struggling as they juggle the pressures of finances, work, family life, and school commitments. They also witness firsthand how gifts to the Holland College Foundation impact and inspire students.

“This institution affects the lives of so many people individually, and it makes a difference in the businesses and industries of our Island and beyond.”

- Employee Donor

Through employee giving, a growing number of faculty and staff are opening more doors for students, creating opportunities for success, and enriching the overall student experience.

We are pleased to welcome 29 new faculty and staff members who began donating to the Holland College Foundation in this past year.

“Giving people a chance, or a second chance, to pursue their education is an investment in all of our futures.”

We are also grateful to the many others who have been active donors for years.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

John McKibbin and Rose Marie Comeau have been long-time donors to the Holland College Foundation, beginning when they established an endowment through the estate of John’s father, Kenneth. This endowment funds The McKibbin Family New Beginnings Bursary, which has benefitted many deserving students over the years.

Although Kenneth lived most of his life in Ontario, there is a generational connection that ties the McKibbin family both to the Island and to Holland College. Kenneth’s aunt and her husband lived in the historical Beaconsfield home in Charlottetown in the early 1900s. His father-in-law was from Pownal and graduated from Prince of Wales in the early 1900s. Kenneth was a very humble man, who never expected or wanted recognition for the good things he did. He was hardworking, enjoyed wonderful success in the military as a mechanical engineer, and helped many organizations and people over the years.

John and Rose Marie lived in Summerside for over 10 years and enjoyed the summers at their cottage in Augustine Cove.

Following his father’s passing, John learned from a longtime friend about the many programs offered at Holland College. He decided that investing in the education and training of Holland College students would be a fitting way to honour his father’s wish of directing his estate in a way that would be of great value to others.

A year later, John and Rose Marie extended the McKibbin Family’s support of Holland College and its students with a significant investment in an endowment designated to help students who find themselves facing unforeseen financial challenges.

MCKIBBIN FAMILY GIVING

Elysse Roberts of Charlottetown, PEI, is in her first year of the Practical Nursing program and was the recipient of the 2021/22 McKibbin Family New Beginnings Bursary, which gave her the opportunity to fulfill a life-long dream of pursuing a nursing career.

For Elysse, receiving this support was a lifechanging experience and is demonstrating to her daughter, Scarlet, that it is never too late to change the course of your life.

“I hope to help others in the future and pay forward the kindness the McKibbin family has extended to me. I am infinitely grateful.”

THE MCKIBBIN FAMILY NEW BEGINNINGS BURSARY

The McKibbin Family New Beginnings Bursary is applicable for first-year students who have been out of the secondary school system for a minimum of four years and who are accepted into a full-time program at Holland College. The applicant must be a resident of PEI and demonstrate financial need.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

Holland College was the grateful recipient of a $2.6 million donation of a 12-acre property of environmental and historical significance this past year. The property will become the John and Christine Andrew Centre for Excellence in Watershed and Aquifer Management.

The property has been in the Andrew family for six generations. It includes the family home, a barn, and a garage on 5.2 acres of land, Andrew’s Pond, and a four-acre old-growth Acadian forest featuring public walking trails. The property was donated by Dr. Alan Andrew, a radiologist in Victoria, B.C., and Dr. Melissa Andrew, a geriatrician in Halifax and a professor at Dalhousie University. It will be named in honor of their parents, Drs. John and Christine Andrew.

It was the family’s wish to ensure that the property’s history and environmental significance are recognized and protected.

“Two years ago, our parents gave us the historic Andrew’s Mills property, where they live, and asked us to help determine its future. We soon realized that we all wanted to see the property used in a way that preserves and celebrates its historic past while being a benefit to the Island as a whole. Little did we know that Holland College had already started to develop a plan for the John and Christine Andrew Centre for Excellence in Watershed and Aquifer Management. Their plans fit perfectly with our family’s hopes for the property, and we are excited to be able to donate it to Holland College.”

- Dr. Alan Andrew and Dr. Melissa Andrew

President Dr. Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald said the generosity of the Andrew family and their desire to ensure that the property remains protected, sustainable, and accessible to the public, is a tribute to their commitment to the environment and to the community.

ANDREW FAMILY GIVING

“On behalf of the Holland College community, I thank Drs. John, Christine, Melissa, and Alan Andrew for seeing the possibilities that gifting this beautiful property to the college creates. Students from our Environmental Applied Science and Technology program and our Wildlife Conservation Technology program will be able to apply their newly-acquired skills in a unique applied learning environments. Students from other programs, such as Heritage Retrofit Carpentry, Energy Systems Engineering Technology, and Sport and Recreation Management, will also benefit as the college develops the property as a Centre of Excellence.”

The property will be used for education, research, and activities that improve environmental and watershed sustainability. The college plans to partner with the federal and provincial governments and Island watershed groups to preserve and maintain the pond and forest.

During production of this Donor Report, Dr. John Andrew passed away. We express our heartfelt condolences to the Andrew family and are honoured to share in keeping his memory alive through the John and Christine Andrew Centre of Excellence in Watershed and Aquifer Management.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

Tim Callahan and his wife

Joanne retired to P.E.I. six years ago after many years of worldwide travel and work assignments. They lived and worked in four provinces and five countries and are now happy to call Prince Edward Island home.

In 2021, the Callahans made a $50,000 gift commitment to the Holland College Foundation to establish the Marie Callahan Memorial Awards for Practical Nursing in memory of Tim’s mother, whose life’s work was in the nursing field.

The first awards were given in the fall of 2021, and two awards, valued at $5,000 each, will be available annually.

Tim’s parents, Lewis and Marie, raised four boys on a family farm near High River, Alberta. After the children all started school, Marie returned to her nursing career, and was often involved in organizing blood clinics and volunteering where she could.

“Given the challenging times we are in, investing in the education of those aspiring to work in health care is very important to Joanne and me. To be able to do that while also honouring my mother’s career in nursing and her commitment to the community is a wonderful fit for us.”

CALLAHAN FAMILY GIVING

She consistently demonstrated strength with a caring and compassionate attitude and was a wonderful example of using one’s time and talents to better the community.

In October 2021, Holland College announced that an additional Practical Nursing program would be offered in January 2022 to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in P.E.I.

Recognizing that there would not be as many financial aid opportunities available for this group of students, the Callahans again stepped up, matching their original commitment for the class of 2022 with a new, $10,000 gift to create two additional $5,000 awards for this newest class of Practical Nursing students.

“Tim and Joanne’s investment in the educational journeys of students who are committed to caring for those who need help at a vulnerable time in their lives will benefit our community in so many ways. We sincerely thank them for their generosity.”
