ST U DE N T L I F E G E T I N VO LV E D ! From performing arts to promoting sustainability to mental health awareness, the Holland College community has a lot to offer.

It’s not hard to tell that the staff here at Holland College are all rooting for our success, whether it’s in the form of extra help when falling behind or cheering you on when you have accomplished something. I am proud to be a student at this college and I look forward to representing the students this year through Student Union. The Student Union provides fun activities and events throughout the school year, but what a lot of people don’t know is how much else we are responsible for. The health and dental plans, nurse practitioner, guidance counselling, and financial aid are all services we offer to students. We are always open to new ideas and would be very happy to hear from you! To learn more about SU or to share ideas, you can reach me at supresident@hollandcollege.com or visit HCSU.ca.

Growing up, I never could have imagined that I’d end up in P.E.I. attending Holland College, but I couldn’t have had a better outcome. Since starting at the college I have not only expanded my knowledge in my field, but I have had the opportunity to grow as a person, make lifelong friendships and make connections out in the world of work. I am a Culinary Arts graduate and am currently in my first year of International Hospitality Management. I couldn’t be more excited to have the opportunity to be a part of Holland College for another two years.

If you are planning to live in one of our residences, you should apply early for both the program you want to take and for a room in residence. We cannot assign you a room in a residence until after we have accepted you for a program. Living in residence is a great way to get the most out of college life. Our apartment-style residences have one, two, and three bedroom furnished units, each with its own kitchenette and bathroom. It’s a good idea to try to find your own roommates, but if you cannot, we try to find a match for you based on the profile (age, gender, program of study, hobbies, etc.) you submit. § § §

A DIVERSE COMMUNITY

Our students come from a variety of educational backgrounds, some are high school graduates, some have GEDs, and others have already earned university degrees. They all come here for the same reason: to acquire the skills and knowledge they will need in the workplace.

After college, many of our students choose to continue to university through our various degree pathways, which include articulation agreements and credit transfers. International students need study permits and must meet English proficiency minimums before they can begin their program. For more information about studying at Holland College as an international student, visit hollandcollege.com/international, email international@hollandcollege.com, or call 902-566-9377 or 1-800-446-5265.

S T U D E N T S U P P O R T S E RV I C E S Our Student Services team ensures students have the tools they need for success. We offer a variety of free resources including counselling, testing, tutoring, and assistive technologies. We help students become independent learners and encourage them to reach their academic potential. You can request support through the application process, or any time during the school year.

Not yet ready for full-time studies? Looking for courses that are aimed at improving your academic foundation for future career and program choices with the possibility of exploring other program areas? Credit courses or Open Academic Studies may be the perfect option to meet your goals.

If you are a student with special learning requirements, or are worried that you will have a challenge adjusting to the academic workload, please contact Student Support Services to discuss your learning needs at 902-629-4237 or email Velda: vcrane@hollandcollege.com.

CREDIT COURSES We offer part-time credit courses that transfer into some Holland College programs. You can take credit courses during the day, in the evenings, or on weekends throughout the school year. For more information, visit the Continuing Ed/Part-time Studies section of the website, or contact the Office of Academic Advising at 902-566-9334, or by email at jdentremont@hollandcollege.com. O P E N AC A D E M I C S T U D I E S If you would like to attend college on either a full-time or part-time basis but don’t know what program you would like to take, Open Academic Studies may be right for you.

C O U N S E L L I N G S E RV I C E S Counselling is available to all Holland College students free of charge in a safe, professional, and confidential environment. The counselling services team helps students identify issues, overcome barriers, and find effective ways to deal with personal concerns. For more information, contact 902-566-9633. In addition to on-site services, counsellors are available 24 hours a day through Aspiria by contacting 1-877-234-5327.

Open Academic Studies is not a program. Students may choose from five courses that are transferable to full-time programs at Holland College: Computer Essentials, Psychology I, Psychology II, Leadership & Group Dynamics, and Writing for College; or they can take courses that are part of programs if there are seats available and they meet the admission requirements. The coordinator for the Office of Academic Advising can help you choose from available courses and create a schedule. Contact Joanne at 902-566-9664, or by email at jdentremont@hollandcollege.com.

A DU LT E DUC AT ION Our Adult Education classrooms are supportive and friendly places where you can complete or upgrade high school credits or prepare to write your GED exam. We hold FREE classes during the day or evening in centres across the province. We can help you get closer to your goal! GED PROGR AM If you did not graduate from high school, you can earn your high school equivalency certificate. First, you must complete a practice test. We use the test to find out if you are ready for the GED exam and to help us create an educational plan that suits you. The practice test covers five subject areas: math, reading, writing, science and social studies, and takes about four hours to complete; but we can break it into smaller sections to fit your schedule. If you score 500 or above in any of the subjects, you are qualified to take the official GED test for that subject, bypassing classes! If you have any questions about the GED program or would like to schedule a practice test, please call Sharon at 902-566-9628, toll free 1-800-446-5265 (option 4), or email scampbell@hollandcollege.com. HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS If you need to take high school credits or upgrade your marks to meet the admission requirements of a postsecondary program, we can help you. For more information about Adult Education programs and courses, post-secondary programs, or admission requirements, email adulteducation@hollandcollege.com or call 902-566-9362.

Since the Atlantic Police Academy (APA) opened its doors in 1971, thousands of public safety officers have received the training they needed to enter and remain in the field. In addition to the Police Science (Cadet) program, the APA offers Basic Firefighting, Conservation Enforcement, Corrections, and Sheriff and Public Safety programs. All of the programs at the APA have mandatory residential requirements. As a student, you must live in the APA’s Slemon Park residence for the duration of the program, except when you are away for on the job training. The residential environment provides students with experiential learning that would not be possible if they only interacted with one another in an instructional setting. Residence life allows students to develop skills in teamwork, problem solving, time management and communications, and allows for the development of gender and cross-cultural sensitivity, which are essential to a successful career in public safety. The rooms are single occupancy with private bathrooms, cable TV, minifridge, Wi-Fi and air conditioning. A meal plan for 14 meals a week includes breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday through Thursday, and breakfast and lunch on Friday.
