A S A F E A N D W E L C OM I NG E N V I RON M E N T Located off the east coast of mainland Canada in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, P.E.I. has a population of over 150,000. It is 224 km (140 miles) long and from 6 to 64 km (4 to 40 miles) wide. The Island is accessible by air, ferry and via the ninemile long Confederation Bridge. The vivid colours of the Island’s landscape, the pristine beaches, the music festivals, and the excellent culinary experiences have made P.E.I. famous. Students from over 45 countries study here.
Charlottetown, P.E.I.’s capital city, has a population of more than 36,000. You are never far from the sea in Prince Edward Island, and Charlottetown is no exception. A boardwalk wraps around the waterfront, and Holland College’s Tourism and Culinary Centre has fantastic views of the mouth of the harbour. Growing up, I never could have imagined that I’d end up in P.E.I. attending Holland College, but I couldn’t have had a better outcome. Since starting at the college I have not only expanded my knowledge in my field, but I have had the opportunity to grow as a person, make lifelong friendships and make connections out in the world of work. I am a Culinary Arts graduate and am currently in my first year of International Hospitality Management. I couldn’t be more excited to have the opportunity to be a part of Holland College for another two years.

There’s always a storm brewing at Holland College! The Hurricanes have earned national recognition for their success, sportsmanship and the highest number of CCAA Academic All Canadian Athletes for the past four years! Our athletics program provides students with the opportunity to participate in high-level competition as part of the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Our athletics and recreation department also offers club-level sports and a variety of recreational and intramural activities. The Centre for Community Engagement (CCE) on the Prince of Wales Campus is the home of the ’Canes. The CCE features a state-of-the-art fitness centre, a cardio room, a walking and running track, a fitness/dance studio, meeting rooms, classrooms, and a physiotherapy centre. P R I N C E O F WA L E S C A M P U S Residence rooms on the Prince of Wales Campus are always in high demand. If you are planning to live in one of our residences, you should apply early for both the program you want to take and for a room in residence. We cannot assign you a room in a residence until after we have accepted you for a program. Living in residence is a great way to get the most out of college life. Our apartment-style residences have one, two, and three bedroom furnished units, each with its own kitchenette and bathroom. It’s a good idea to try to find your own roommates, but if you cannot, we try to find a match for you based on the profile (age, gender, program of study, hobbies, etc.) you submit. § § §

S L E M O N PA R K Students enrolled in programs at the Atlantic Police Academy (APA) live in the APA’s residence except during their on the job training. The residence rooms are single occupancy with private bathroom, cable TV, mini-fridge, Internet and air conditioning. OFF CAMPUS Holland College has lists of off-campus accommodations for Charlottetown, Summerside, Georgetown, O’Leary, Tignish, and Alberton. A DIVERSE COMMUNITY
Our students come from a variety of educational backgrounds, some are high school graduates, some have GEDs, and others have already earned university degrees. They all come here for the same reason: to acquire the skills and knowledge they will need in the workplace.
After college, many of our students choose to continue to university through our various degree pathways, which include articulation agreements and credit transfers. CREDIT COURSES We offer part-time credit courses that transfer into some Holland College programs. You can take credit courses during the day, in the evenings, or on weekends throughout the school year. O P E N AC A D E M I C S T U D I E S If you would like to attend college on either a full-time or part-time basis but don’t know what program you would like to take, Open Academic Studies may be right for you.
C O U N S E L L I N G S E RV I C E S Counselling is available to all Holland College students free of charge in a safe, professional, and confidential environment. The counselling services team helps students identify issues, overcome barriers, and find effective ways to deal with personal concerns. For more information, contact 902-566-9633. Open Academic Studies is not a program. Students may choose from five courses that are transferable to full-time programs at Holland College: Computer Essentials, Psychology I, Psychology II, Leadership & Group Dynamics, and Writing for College; or they can take courses that are part of programs if there are seats available and they meet the admission requirements. A DU LT E DUC AT ION Our Adult Education classrooms are supportive and friendly places where you can complete or upgrade high school credits or prepare to write your GED exam. We hold FREE classes during the day or evening in centres across the province. We can help you get closer to your goal! GED PROGR AM If you did not graduate from high school, you can earn your high school equivalency certificate. First, you must complete a practice test. We use the test to find out if you are ready for the GED exam and to help us create an educational plan that suits you. The practice test covers five subject areas: math, reading, writing, science and social studies, and takes about four hours to complete; but we can break it into smaller sections to fit your schedule. If you score 500 or above in any of the subjects, you are qualified to take the official GED test for that subject, bypassing classes! Degree pathways such as articulation agreements and transfer credits give you the opportunity to begin your studies at one institution and finish at another. Holland College has more than 150 agreements with universities and post-secondary institutions across Canada, in the U.S. and overseas. These articulation agreements give you the opportunity to earn a university degree in as little as two years after you have your Holland College diploma.
Collège de l’Île and Holland College have partnered to offer students of both post-secondary institutions some innovative learning opportunities! As a Holland College student, you can now take some of your courses in French in the Early Childhood Care and Education program and Human Services program. This is a great way to strengthen your French language abilities and to hone an invaluable workplace skill. You also benefit from convenient and flexible French language training options at a discounted price. French language training is offered in the fall, winter and spring. The Holland College Admissions Office can direct you on how to take advantage of these unique opportunities. Collège de l’Île’s Charlottetown campus is located at 295 Kent Street. Students who graduate from any two-year program at Holland College with an average of 70 per cent or higher are granted two years of credit toward a Bachelor of Applied Management at UNB Saint John. Individual programs have additional degree pathways, such as the Bioscience Technology program’s agreement with the University of Prince Edward Island, which gives graduates two years of credit toward the Bachelor of Science in Bioscience Technology degree. This program is the only one of its kind in the region. As a student, you will develop and hone your laboratory and scientific research skills. Throughout the program, you will learn natural product extraction, fermentation, bacterial and animal cell culture skills and techniques. You will take part in six weeks of on the job training so that you can apply your skills in a real work environment. You’ll also focus on project-based learning and will complete an independent research project on a topic of your choice.
The Environmental Applied Science Technology program teaches you scientific theory in classes such as environmental microbiology, soil science, air quality, and environmental chemistry. You will apply these theories working in rivers, streams and water treatment facilities. You will collect and analyze water and soil samples and compare results from previous years to monitor environmental health. By the time you graduate, you will be qualified to work as an environmental technician, or you may continue your education to earn a B.Sc. through one of the program’s degree pathways.

This program combines the great outdoors with classroom learning. You will spend many hours in field camps, where you will conduct habitat and night animal surveys, tour parks and wildlife rehabilitation centres, learn about wildlife and human interaction, and much more. Since the Atlantic Police Academy (APA) opened its doors in 1971, thousands of public safety officers have received the training they needed to enter and remain in the field. In addition to the Police Science (Cadet) program, the APA offers Basic Firefighting, Conservation Enforcement, Corrections, and Sheriff and Public Safety programs. All of the programs at the APA have mandatory residential requirements. As a student, you must live in the APA’s Slemon Park residence for the duration of the program, except when you are away for on the job training. The residential environment provides students with experiential learning that would not be possible if they only interacted with one another in an instructional setting. Residence life allows students to develop skills in teamwork, problem solving, time management and communications, and allows for the development of gender and cross-cultural sensitivity, which are essential to a successful career in public safety. The rooms are single occupancy with private bathrooms, cable TV, minifridge, Wi-Fi and air conditioning. A meal plan for 14 meals a week includes breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday through Thursday, and breakfast and lunch on Friday.

In the Marketing and Advertising Management program you will look at real life marketing situations, learn to conduct market research through focus groups and surveys, and use that information to build marketing, business, and public relations plans. The distributed learning model offers the practicing Primary Care Paramedic the opportunity to complete most of their Advanced Care Paramedic studies in a distance delivery format. In the first year and a half of the program, students complete three semesters of online learning modules via the Holland College Learning Management System, SAM. Students are required to attend three twoweek lab and testing sessions on site in Charlottetown, and prescribed hospital clinical and ambulance practicum shifts.

Learn how to plan, install, test, inspect, troubleshoot, and service all types of industrial electrical equipment. You’ll take courses in the essentials of electricity, wiring and circuits, as well as advanced courses in automation and motion control, programmable logic controls, industrial communication systems, and computer aided design.
You will learn how to install and service both hot and cold water distribution piping, plumbing fixtures and appliances, waste and vent piping, wastewater disposal and hot water heating in systems in residential, commercial, and institutional buildings. Steamfitters/pipefitters lay out, assemble, fabricate, maintain and repair piping systems that carry water, steam, chemicals or fuel used in heating, cooling, lubricating and other processes. The skills you will acquire include installing, altering, maintaining and repairing piping systems that convey hot water, air, fuel and fine solids.
The program also prepares you for a variety of roles by teaching you construction and residential wiring methods. What you learn in class, you’ll demonstrate and test in a variety of on-site electrical lab areas, giving you handson training and exposure to real life working conditions to prepare you for a career as an industrial electrician. In the Precision Machinist program, you will learn how to take a mechanical blueprint and physically produce the part it describes. Learn to operate lathes, drill presses, vices, micrometers, and milling machines to create the precise component required by technical drawings. You could create something that could become an integral part of an airplane or car, a piece of surgical equipment, or a major industrial machine. If you like to pay attention to detail and have mechanical aptitude, this program may be just what you’re looking for.
Your knowledge of math and physics will be paired with the mechanical and technical knowledge needed to begin a career as a 4th Level power engineer. Learn essential welding processes and refine your skills by crafting and fabricating a variety of metal structures. The advanced wood processing industry in Canada demands high quality, innovative, and technically sophisticated workers. In this program, you will learn everything you need to enter one of the fastest growing manufacturing sectors in Canada. Once you are adept at using manual tools, you’ll move on to sophisticated electrical tools, including computer numerical control (CNC) equipment. By the time you graduate, you will be comfortable making cabinets and architectural millwork, laminating, veneering, machining, sanding, assembling and finishing. In addition to course requirements, you will also complete a personal project of your own design. You’ll earn apprenticeship hours for each week of the program, and will qualify to write Level 1 of your cabinetmaking Red Seal certification. DID YOU KNOW?
