wallcoverings | FALL 2016
“Hands are not machines. I think it’s important, the irregularity. The individuality.” These words define the viewpoint of Countess Nicholas (Tania) Bobrinskoy, the remarkable owner of Zina Studios, with whom Holland & Sherry has collaborated to release a new wallcovering collection. Born in Europe, Tania was introduced to the interiors industry through her late husband, Count Nicholas Bobrinksoy, a direct descendant of Russian Empress Catherine the Great. Nicholas was a fine art painter who turned to textiles to make a living after emigrating to the United States following World War II. Led by Nicholas’s meticulous historical reproductions, the silk-screening studio that the Bobrinskoys developed grew to become a trusted resource for legendary designers such as Sister Parish, Albert Hadley, Dorothy Draper and Elsie de Wolfe, who valued both the traditional patterns the firm was known for, as well as Nicholas’s more contemporary designs. It is those designs—modern, yet timeless—that caught our attention, and demanded introduction to the global audience of Holland & Sherry. The elegant yet playful spirit of Nicholas’s patterns Gamma, Textura, Trigols, Verseau II, Volutes and Tip Top Swirl is celebrated in a selection of beautiful colorways which were curated by the discerning eye of Tania herself. In addition to the standard colors, customization is easy and almost limitless.
gamma Named for a Gamma ray, this pattern mimics the vibration of energ y as it travels through the air.
volutes From shells to ferns to storms, Volutes celebrates the many spiral forms in our surroundings. This pattern can be printed with the two silkscreens aligned or offset 50 percent.
tip top swirl This abstract stipple resembles a painter’s brushwork, but don’t miss the way the pattern folds in on itself over a larger field.
trigols The steady climb of Trigols’ shapes recalls the upward march of mountains, but the pattern has a crisp geometry all its own.
verseau ii “Verseau,” the French name for the Aquarius sign, is represented by an unbroken chain of triangles that evokes the never-ending back and forth of the ocean’s waves. This pattern can be printed with the two silkscreens aligned or offset 50 percent.
textura A richly textured chevron pattern, full of cross-hatching and linework that add unexpected depth and detail to the design.
