Luxury Cashmere & Vicuña
IMPERIAL GOLD The vicuña has a lean body and long slim legs, capable of great speed. With a small delicate head and large dark eyes the vicuña has earned the nickname ‘Princess of the Andes’. Inca legend tells of the vicuña as the reincarnation of a beautiful young maiden who was wooed by an old and ugly king. She would only consent to his advances if he promised her a coat of pure gold. This is how the vicuña came to have its golden fleece. Considered sacred by the Incas, only royalty were allowed to wear the vicuña’s precious fleece, also known as the ‘fibre of the gods’. The fleece of the vicuña is the rarest, most costly natural fibre in the world. The smallest of the camelid family, the nimble, graceful vicuña is cousin to the alpaca, llama and the wild guanaco. An adult vicuña will weigh in the region of 45kg/100 pounds and is approximately 91cm/3ft high at the shoulder. These reserved mammals are to be found in the extreme heights of the Altiplano regions of the Andes, most commonly in Peru.
Vicuña produce the finest fibre in the world. The fibre averages 12-14 microns in diameter, compared to the 25 microns diameter of alpaca fibre and is substantially finer, softer and lighter than the very best cashmere or angora. Cashmere is characterised by its luxurious soft fibres which allow for natural light-weight insulation without being overly bulky. It can be worn in all climates as it has a high moisture content. This allows insulation properties to change with the relative humidity in the air. So, when the air is warm, cashmere fabrics allow the body to keep cool and when the air is cold, cashmere fabrics allow the body to keep warm.
