liberal freedom many people take living in freedom for granted and they hardly dwell on it. The unrest in different countries and the confrontation with large refugee groups streaming into Europe show that there are still many people who obviously don’t have that freedom. The Liberation Route Europe connects the importance of freedom in the past with the future and hands it down to the current and future generations.

Liberation Route Europe is an ever expanding international commemoration route that combines important milestones of modern European history. The route follows the path of the Allied Forces during the liberation of Western Europe in 1944 and 1945. From the South of England to the beaches of Normandy, the Belgian Ardennes, Brabant, Arnhem, Nijmegen, the Hßrtgenwald, Berlin and the Polish town Gdańsk. Italy and Luxembourg too were part of the international route. In areas in the Netherlands, this route is marked by loudspeakers in the shape of large rocks, info poles and boulders. One or more war veterans describing their remarkable experiences in 1944 and 1945 can be heard on each of the speakers. On the route are different historical locations and museums, including Het Nationaal Bevrijdingsmuseum 1940-1945 (The National Liberation Museum 1940-1945) in Groesbeek near Nijmegen.

The National Freedom Research in 2011 showed that the basis for commemorating and celebrating still continuous to be big after 66 years of the end of WWII. 86% of the Dutch find the commemorations on 4 May very important and 78% want to celebrate 5 May. Of the world problems people worry about, wars are still in the top three. For young people between 13 and 17 years old it is even the most important subject. Youngsters especially feel the need to know what the victims felt and the horrible situation they were in. Reading those stories youngsters can make the connection with abstract themes, like peace, freedom and human rights. (source: national vrijheidsonderzoek 2011, NJR Panel)

Operation Market Garden The museum is situated on a unique location, namely the spot where, in September 1944, one of the largest allied airborne operations took place: Operation Market Garden. Thousands of parachutists have been dropped on that spot and the extensive surroundings of what is now a museum. In remembrance of this historic event the museum has been built in the shape of a parachute. The aim of Operation Market Garden was to obtain certain crucial bridges over the large rivers in the Netherlands and guaranty a quick advance towards Germany. A few months later, in February 1945, from the -by thenliberated area started the immense Rijnland offensive, resulting in the liberation of large parts of Germany and the Netherlands by the allied forces and laying the foundation for the overall liberation of Western Europe. 66

Valuable The attention to the ordinary life is the strength of the museum. Because the basic needs do not differ much from today’s life, young and old can relate to it. And it is also much easier to understand what it would mean if that will be taken away from you. Marieke is 19 and visits the Bevrijdingsmuseum for the first time. She is suitably impressed. “Through the personal stories I get a much better image of what it means not to be able to live in freedom. It also reminds me of the people that are fleeing from the war in their country at present. In many aspects it doesn’t differ much from what people experienced in the Second World War. You start thinking about what freedom means and how valuable it really is.”

Normal life takes centre stage Although the museum was built around the operations of the allied forces in WWII this museum distinguishes itself from other museums which pay special attention to these historic events. Where other museums are dedicated to acts of war and the material used, the Nationaal Bevrijdingsmuseum 1944-1945 emphasises the influence of the war and German occupation on the life of ordinary people. The living conditions, the shortage of materials and food and the improvisation abilities that people seem to have in those circumstances. The ingenious hiding spaces to help people stay safe. The ignoring of restrictions, like listening to broadcasts of Radio Oranje. Through materials, objects, photos, eyewitness accounts, films and audios an impressive scenario of normal life in (lack of) freedom is shown. Dome of honour The military operations are shown ‘through the mode of thoughts of a civilian’: uncomplicated and clear to everyone. For instance, the crossing of the allied soldiers over the Waal is visualised in a large maquette with a diorama. Light and sound support the image. Next to the museum a memorial dome, the so-called Erekoepel (dome of honour), has been placed. Here hang wall plaques and, for each army troop, a Roll of Honour (ereboek), with the names of the fallen soldiers, is also on display. That the museum also appeals to children is obvious in the many letters that children hang on the ‘freedom trees’ on the Ereplein (Square of Honours) which has been placed in the museum to suit this purpose. 8


Travelling exhibition European liberation and Second World War ‘Routes of Liberation: European Legacies of the Second World War’ is a unique travelling exhibition about the deadliest armed conflict in human history. The exhibition has a striking modern design and offers different perspectives on the recent European history. The exhibition explores how we lost our freedom in the previous century, how we regained our personal freedom and wonders what to do to keep this freedom in the future. The exhibition is an initiative of Liberation Route Europe Foundation in collaboration with a consortium of prestigious European museums about WWII and other partner organisations. Liberation Route Europe reaches over borders and wants to understand different historical perspectives. They aim to deepen the knowledge of the public about the intensive fighting for freedom within the Europe of today, by stimulating a shared remembering of the consequences of the Second World War. Liberation Route Europe Foundation The Liberation Route Europe Foundation is originally a Dutch organisation and has placed the Netherlands as such in front of the unveiling of the Liberation Route Europe (www.liberationroute.com). Apart from their responsibilities concerning the development of the route, the foundation is responsible for the coordination and organisation of a series of activities concerning the themes of liberation and freedom. The Liberation Route Europe Foundation works together with government organisations, universities, museums, veteran groups, organisations of commemoration events, travel agents, tour operators and other tourist organisations in Western Europe, Poland and Italy to collect the national perspectives of the liberation of Europe and to share experience and knowhow. The aim is to create a common awareness of the importance of freedom. The foundation commemorates the events from WWII and stimulates the peoples of Europe to celebrate freedom and treasure it for the future. Thanks to Liberation Route Europe everyone can now discover and experience the route the allied forces took during the last phase of the Second World War. The route focusses on the liberation of the European continent from the national socialistic occupier and especially the long-lasting consequences of the Second World War. The Liberation Route Europe app offers an immediate access to story lines, sights of historical interest, historical events, biographies and much more, inclusive historical photos, spoken stories and movies. 10

SLACK BAY Few contemporary filmmakers have done as much to bring Flanders to the screen as Bruno Dumont, and his latest film Slack Bay finds the director again operating in the landscape he knows best. Not for the first time, Slack Bay sees Dumont using the murder mystery format as a starting point for a much more sprawling, adventurous work that places the emphasis far away from the traditional whodunnit; as with L’il Quinquin and Humanity, who’s behind the crime(s) is a somewhat throwaway matter, and this time around the reveal occurs surprisingly early on. Like its immediate predecessor L’il Quinquin, Slack Bay is also a comedy, and a fairly broad one at that. And just as with Quinquin, Dumont’s latest features two bumbling, inept cops trying to solve a series of murders, this time in the titular bay which is inhabited by, among others, the Brufort family. The Bruforts make a meagre living by picking mussels in the bay and transporting tourists from side to side at high tide. Among their children is 18 year old Ma Loute, impressively played by Brandon Lavieville (as a side note, Ma Loute - a near-untranslatable piece of old Picard - is the title the film goes by in France). Ma Loute forms a close relationship with Billie (magnetically played by a performer known only as Raph), who is part of the wealthy, upper class Van Peteghem family who quite literally tower over the bay’s inhabitants in their extravagant Egyptian-style mansion set high up among the dunes. This flamboyant structure is as excessive as the performances by the actors playing the adult Van Peteghems - Dumont has cast two big European names in the forms of Fabrice Luchini and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, as well as reuniting with his Camille Claudel 1915 stars Juliette Binoche and Jean-

Luc Vincent (interestingly, Slack Bay takes place in 1910 and against the backdrop of the Belle Époque, an era that came to a close just before the year in which Dumont’s austere Claudel film is set). All four actors are let off the leash by Dumont, but it’s Binoche who chews the most scenery in a performance that will no doubt repel as many as it delights; her expression as Luchini haplessly attempts the carving of a joint of roasted meat is worth the ticket price alone. With the missing persons/police enquiry aspect of the film almost entirely inconsequential, Dumont is far more interested in examining the dynamic that exists between the haves and the have-nots, and although all the characters - particularly the haves - are painted using the broadest of strokes, the film is always effective, often funny, and occasionally unsettling. Slack Bay is strong stuff from a filmmaker who has yet to disappoint, and it comes highly recommended.

Het is een vreemd soort taal, gedichten. Normaal gebruiken wij onze taal alsof het geld is: je geeft het uit en je ontvangt het. Maar je kijkt er eigenlijk nooit naar. Je werkt ermee, maar je ziet het niet. In gedichten gaat dat anders: Dan kijk je in het hart van de taal. In het hart van de mens.

Ridders van de straat ‘Heer, bewaar de kattemepper…’ Luidt een meesterlijk citaat Uit het werk van S.J. Knepper. ‘Heer, bewaar de kattemepper…’ Staat in ‘Ridders van de straat’ - kent u dit gedicht van Knepper? ‘Heer, bewaar de kattemepper…’ Luidt een meesterlijk citaat.

Dit schijnbaar onzinnige gedicht lijkt wel een reclametekst. Meneer S.J. Knepper vindt een versregel uit een gedicht van een zekere Knepper meesterlijk en hoopt dat de lezer dat gedicht wel kent. Hoewel, gedicht? Drie van de acht versregels zijn precies hetzelfde: ‘Heer, bewaar de kattemepper…’. Ook de eerste twee regels zijn gelijk aan de laatste twee. Twee keer wordt zijn eigen naam vermeld, twee keer krijgen we de titel van het gedicht. En dan drie keer het onzinnige gebed voor een uitgestorven vak waarvan de naam niet toevallig zo naadloos rijmt op de naam van de dichter. Wat moeten we ermee? Je kunt zeggen dat het vers prachtig gemaakt is en loopt als een geolied rad van avontuur. Dat klopt. Dat het maar twee rijmklanken kent en dat één daarvan zijn eigen naam is die bijna op niets anders rijmt. Dat hele regels rijmen op zichzelf. Dat je het na één keer lezen eigenlijk al van buiten kent. Maar vergis je niet. Het gedicht bevat bijna uitsluitend reclametrucjes: herhalingen, rijm, naamsbekendheid, beroep op de gebruiker. Genoeg om zulke reclame genadeloos in het zonnetje te zetten. Dit reclamegedicht is zó schaamteloos overdreven, dat je ervan moet glimlachen. Denk niet dat Knepper zó’n hekel heeft aan katten dat hij de kattemeppers tot de ridders wil rekenen. Dan zoek je er echt te veel achter. En och, wat zit er een magnifieke python onder het straatgras van de Knepperlogica. Het gedicht verwijst steeds naar zichzelf. Zelfs als Knepper zich tot zijn lezers richt, gaat het over ditzelfde gedicht. De vraag is het antwoord. De slang vreet zichzelf op. En er blijft niets over. Zulke gedichten moet je niet naar binnen schrokken, maar zuinig opzuigen. Ik zou zeggen: “Kopen, die Knepper!”

Dirk Hartog Tulip

To mark the Dirk Hartog 2016 anniversary year, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Canberra is proud to present the official Dirk Hartog tulip. The Dirk Hartog tulip was presented to His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and Her Excellency Lady Cosgrove by Her Excellency the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Australia Erica Schouten to show gratitude for the warmrelationship with the people of Australia. Dirk Hartog anniversary year This year is significant because it marks the 400th anniversary of the first European contact with Western Australia. On 25 October 1616, Dutch Sailor Dirk Hartog made landfall at Dirk Hartog Island in the Shark Bay area, where he left an inscribed pewter plate. To mark this anniversary, many celebrations and commemorations are taking place throughout the year across Australia and the Netherlands.

Dutch traditions Floriade was the brainchild of Christiaan Slotemaker de Bruine, a Dutch Landscape Architect in Canberra. He commenced the design of Floriade in 1986 and based it on the world famous ‘Keukenhof’ garden in The Netherlands. For the celebratory event, the tulip was baptised by the Governor-General, Lady Cosgrove and the Ambassador with special Dirk Hartog wine per Dutch tradition.

Dirk Hartog tulip The Dirk Hartog tulip was cultivated in the Netherlands by Frank Timmerman, owner of plant nursery ‘Goede Tulpen’, which translates as Good Tulips. The tulip, especially selected for its dual shade of orange, has travelled over 16,500 kilometres to be at Floriade in Canberra, which is roughly the same route as Dirk Hartog took to Australia.

Tulips from the Netherlands Tulips came to the Netherlands in the beginning of the 17th century. A few years after Dirk Hartog died, there was a real ‘tulip mania’ in the Netherlands. Tulips and tulip bulbs were very rare and expensive – some had the same value as a house. Nowadays, the Netherlands is famous for its horticulture, including leading the export of tulips and tulip bulbs. Horticulture will be one of the topics of conversation during the parallel trade mission later this year, coinciding with the Royal Visit of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima.

Though the Netherlands is a small country, its landscape, dialects and of course food, show plenty of variations from one province to the next. Zeeland, for example, is known for its extraordinary seafood such as the fleshy, delicate prawns from Stellendam, the briny Creuse oysters, juicy mussels or the king of lobsters from the Oosterschelde. Go to the Betuwe region in Gelderland and you’re suddenly in a colourful land of plenty where apple, pear and cherry trees thrive on fertile sand and clay grounds. Notably, the province is home to renowned wineries that produce award-winning wines which haven’t gone unnoticed by some of the world’s leading wine connoisseurs. A perfect example is Wijnhoeve De Colonjes in Groesbeek, praised extensively by critic Jancis Robinson. And how about the province of North Holland where you can delight in smoked eel from the IJsselmeer or enjoy some of the creamiest Dutch cheeses? Love a good roast lamb? Head to Texel where there are as many sheep as there are people, and where you can sample the best lamb, a product of unsurpassed quality with a unique, slightly salty taste that is said to even be a favourite of Princess Beatrix. For the next few issues of Holland Focus, I would like to take you on a culinary trip through the bountiful Dutch provinces so that you too can experience and get a taste of all the diverse flavours our country has to offer. From north to south and east to west – let’s take a trip through the Netherlands at its culinary best! 15


The Northern Province of Groningen Our culinary trip starts in the northern Dutch province of Groningen, home to approximately 585,000 citizens and one of the most sparsely populated provinces in the country (after Drenthe, Friesland and Zeeland). The capital city, which has the same name, boasts a history that can be traced back to the third century AD when it was founded on a ridge of sand known as the Hondsrug. In the Middle Ages, Groningen became a member of the powerful alliance known as the Hanseatic League (1229 – 1669) and thus, one of the most important trading centres in Northern Europe. By the end of the 15th century, the city had entered its Golden Age, even managing to get control over a large part of Friesland. It was during that time that some of Groningen’s major landmarks were erected. The building of the Gothic-style Martini Tower, which looms at a height of 318 feet, started in 1469, for example, and the famous Der Aa Church underwent some of its most significant renovations. Tourists who visit the city are in luck because its historic centre is mostly pedestrianised, and therefore, discovering its monumental buildings and attractive streets is delightfully easy. The Grote Markt (Main Square) has many cafés and restaurants and is the ultimate place to start exploring the city after

enjoying a nice lunch or a cup of coffee with a slice of the local Groninger koek (dark, dense spice cake), one of the many regional specialties. Culinary Treasures Groninger koek is only the beginning. A small selection of some of the products the province is best known for include regional beers and jenever (Dutch gin), eel from Lauwersoog, wild oysters, Oldehoofster goat’s cheese, spekdikken (rye pancakes with sausage or bacon prepared in a special waffle iron), and boerenjongens or boerenmeisjes (translated as ‘farmer boys’ and ‘farmer girls’, it is a treat that consists of dried fruit soaked in brandy). But if we were to narrow the selection down to three products, we would definitely have to include poffert, metworst and Groningse mosterd. Poffert Not to be confused with the miniature pancake-like poffertjes that are usually served with butter and powdered sugar! Poffert is a bundt-shaped, breadlike cake filled with currants, raisins and sometimes chopped, candied fruit. The cake is rather heavy and therefore makes for a comforting cold weather treat. In the past it was one of the most popular

farmer’s breakfasts, next to rice pudding (rijstepap). The batter for poffert is similar to that of Dutch pancakes and is baked au bain-marie in a special mould. Though there is no sugar called for in the recipe, poffert is usually served with a thick layer of pure butter and a generous amount of brown sugar. You can find poffert at many of the province’s fine bakeries. Metworst Though the provinces of Friesland and Drenthe produce a similar variety of dried sausage, the Groninger metworst is unique in its own right. Metworst is made of pork and often enjoyed as a hearty snack by the ‘borrel’ (with a drink) or with Dutch classics such as stamppot (vegetable and potato mash). It gets its characteristic, warm flavour from cloves, one of the province’s most loved and used spices. Every butcher has their own special recipe. Some prefer to grind the meat more finely, while others give preference to a chunkier type of sausage.

Groningse mosterd With its whole grains still intact, mustard from Groningen is sharp and robust. It is served as a condiment with meat and sometimes as a dip for cheeses or sausage. In the past, the mustard was also used to make mosterdstip, a simple sauce consisting of bacon fat, flour and a little cream. It was a clever way to flavour the sometimes sober meals consisting of potatoes. One of the most popular mustard companies from Groningen is Marne, known the world over and dating to 1926. Much like many ‘Dijon’ mustard manufacturers, Marne does not use Dutch mustard seeds but rather imported seeds from Canada and Eastern Europe. Those looking for a one hundred per cent ‘Groninger’ product, can purchase their mustard from Abraham’s Mosterdmakerij in Eenrum. The company produces organic mustard made according to traditional method and is the only one in the Netherlands to use homegrown mustard seeds. Though in the past, there were many small mustard companies in Groningen and in the north of the country, this is not the case today and even more of a reason why Abraham’s Mosterdmakerij is one-of-akind! 17

A Taste of Groningen… from Your Own Kitchen! If you won’t be travelling to Groningen any time soon, here is a recipe that will transport your taste buds to one of the country’s twelve delicious provinces. Groninger mosterdsoep, prepared with sweet leeks and topped with crisp lardons, is not only a true classic, it is also the ultimate lunchtime indulgence or starter to a dinner party. Eet smakelijk! Groninger Mosterdsoep Serves 4-6 Ingredients: 40g butter 60g flour 1L hot chicken stock 4 tbsps Groningse mosterd 1 leek, cleaned and sliced 100ml full-fat milk 125g lardons finely chopped chives, as garnish

Instructions: Melt the butter in a heavy-bottomed soup pan, and stir in the flour until you obtain a paste-like consistency. Add the hot chicken stock little by little while stirring continuously. The soup should take on a smooth, creamy consistency. Stir in the mustard, and leave the soup to simmer covered for approximately 5 minutes. Add the leeks, and allow to cook for a further five minutes. In the meantime, fry your lardons in a frying pan. You will not need any extra fat. Drain the lardons on kitchen paper. Serve the soup in shallow bowls, and garnish with the lardons and a sprinkling of chives.

Vroeger sprak je je ouders altijd aan met u. Daarmee drukte je uit dat je ze respecteerde. Sommige ouders stellen er nog steeds prijs op om met u aangesproken te worden. Maar tegenwoordig vinden de meeste ouders dat ge-u vreselijk. Die staan er weer op dat ze worden aangesproken met jij. Die vorm wordt steeds meer gebruikt, in allerlei omstandigheden. Dat wordt nog versterkt door het feit dat je de vorm je ook kunt gebruiken als vervanging voor men of zelfs ik. Voetballers spreken graag in de je-vorm: “Je komt met de bal aangelopen, je schiet en dan hoop je maar dat ie erin gaat”. Die mededeling gaat niet over u of jou, maar over de voetballer zelf. Het is een soort vervanging voor ik. Daarom zou ik ook gerust tegen de minister kunnen zeggen: “je wordt er gek van!” Want dat je wordt gebruikt in plaats van ik! Kunt u / kun je het nog volgen? Knap ingewikkeld, niet? Je kunt je zo langzamerhand wel voorstellen, dat Engelstaligen zich achter het oor krabben. Om die overgang aan te geven van u naar jij gebruiken we het Franse woord tutoyeren, ook wel vertaald als jijenen-jouwen. In het Nederlands klinkt dat een beetje raar. Jouwen lijkt net iets teveel op het werkwoord uitjouwen. Je kunt er niet onder uit. In het kielzog van het Engels zijn jij en je hard op weg de enige aanspreekvorm in het Nederlands te worden. Worden we daardoor wat minder beleefd? Dat lijkt teveel gezegd. Het Engels maakt zich daar geen zorgen over. Maar dat is voor zover ik weet dan ook de enige taal ter wereld, waar je ‘ik’ altijd met een hoofdletter schrijft. En hoe beleefd is dat?

Pop rock with emotional and often personal valence – that’s how the music of singer-songwriter Sanne Hans, frontwoman of the Dutch band Miss Montreal, can perhaps best be described. Over the past eight years, she has scored plenty of hits, released six albums, called at many festivals and theatres, judged at two talent contests and launched both her own pop festival and TV programme. Yes, she’s a jack of many trades, this disarmingly spontaneous, cheerful and humorous, but also extraordinarily soulful and empathetic artist!

Occupied with music from early age Roos-Anne – general name Sanne – Hans was born on 22 September 1984 in Dedemsvaart, a village in the municipality of Hardenberg (formerly Avereest), located in the north of the province of Overijssel. Dedemsvaart is, by the way, named after Baron Willem Jan van Dedem (1776-1851), who as peat-moor proprietor ordered the digging, from 9 July 1809, of an eponymous, eventually 40 km long channel for the transport of peat. Until the advent of coal in the 19th century, peat in the Netherlands, Flanders and some other parts of Europe was the most important fuel. Sanne grew up in a musical family and already as a child wrote and sang songs. Although she stutters when speaking, it doesn’t inconvenience her while singing. From her teenage years she played in a number of bands, especially in and around Zwolle. One of these was Ysis, which besides Sanne (vocals, guitar) consisted of Inge Calkar (guitar, vocals) and Ilse Gerritsen (cello), whose place was later taken by Ilsje Merk. This trio slowly made furore in the circuit with a blend of acoustic pop and folk music in which influences resonated of soloists and bands like Heather Nova, Tori Amos, The Cranberries, K’s Choice and Radiohead. By winning the 2002/2003 edition of the student competition Stimorol Stagemasters, the band was given the opportunity to record an EP at the New Road Studios in February 2004. This ‘mini CD’ of four songs, including Rose and Ricardo, was well received, resulting in Pink Records releasing Rose as a single in 2005. Additionally, Ysis was booked to open for such bands as Racoon and Intwine, and the three ladies also played at the Bevrijdingsfestival (Liberation Festival), Oerol, Huntenpop and Peacedog, among others. Lack of motivation, Sanne’s move to Enschede, and a study (psychology) Inge had taken up in Groningen, led to the curtain falling for Ysis in early 2008.

With Ysis, Inge wanted to make more Celtic music and Sanne, on the other hand, more pop music. “While I do consider Celtic music to be very cool, I don’t think it really fits with me,” says Sanne. “When Inge and I were part of Ysis, we made pop with a touch of Irish folk. The great thing is that after this period, we both started our own pop band with which we each could convey our personal music preference, I with Miss Montreal and she with ZaZa.”

Breakthrough among wide audience with Just a Flirt Sanne, who studied Songwriting at the ArtEZ Conservatorium in Enschede, became known and was embraced by a wide audience when she emerged as Miss Montreal with her songs in 2008. That same year she was seen and heard in a commercial of Slankie, a cheese spread brand from Frico. Backdropped by images of various

embarrassing situations, she sang: “Fortunately, I still have a good body.” Regarding this, she recalls: “They were looking for a blond, tough woman to play the role ánd someone who could sing and play the accompanying song. I had heard this from my singing teacher at school. She said: ‘You have to take part in it.’ And then I said: ‘Okay, I’ll do that.’ Of all the candidates only I, it turned out, managed to play the song properly. When they saw my audition, they said, ‘Hey, that’s great! That’s what we’re going to do.’ Initially, my work on the commercial was supposed to be limited to playing the music and singing the song, but when I also turned out to be able to play the roll nicely, I was allowed to do that as well. But I had no idea it would unfold like this!” It is often thought that her songs to a large extent arose from her love for the music of the Flemish singer Sarah Bettens, Bettens’ band K’s Choice and American Melissa Etheridge, to name a few, but this is an image that needs some adjusting in Sanne’s opinion. “Sure, I have grown up with it, so it has crept in, but, and that’s actually quite stupid, I do not really like female rock singers. Who I do consider to be among my musical heroes then? Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Fogerty solo, Bruce Springsteen... And a lot of blues musicians.” It’s a question she undoubtedly has been asked oftentimes, but how did she come up with the name Miss Montreal? Does she perhaps feel connected to the Canadian city of Montreal or with Canada? “No, that’s the joke, because I don’t feel connected to either of it at all,” she smiles. “It’s a name that’s easy on everyone’s ears. And I also was like: if you make a logo of it, you have MM. I kind of liked that. But that’s also all there is to it, haha. So there’s not anything special behind it.” In October 2008, her first single appeared: Just a Flirt. Shortly afterwards, she sang this song in the much-watched TV talk show De Wereld Draait Door (The World Keeps Turning). Her performance and dry wit left a big impression on the viewers. Soon, Giel Beelen, disc jockey at radio station 3FM, had the radio first with Sanne’s debut single in his morning show GIEL. During the week of 13 October 2008, he played the song every morning as meGielhit,

With singer-songwriter Nielson, Sanne scored a big hit in 2013 with Hoe (How), which, on top of that, went platinum. The Home Recordings, a collection of 18 recordings and demos that Miss Montreal was home. The hit single Say Heaven Say Hell also became known by the reality TV series Utopia.

his own version of the 3FM Megahit, which the song two weeks later, incidentally, álso became. On 13 October, the song also was played in another 3FM programme, the Coen en Sander Show, presented by Coen Swijnenberg and Sander Lantinga. And if that weren’t enough, Miss Montreal that day also signed a record deal with 8Ball Music on GIEL. On 1 November, Just A Flirt rocketed into the Dutch charts and remained there for 33 consecutive weeks! In that period, she also was repeatedly a guest on programmes by TMF (The Music Factory), the Dutch counterpart of MTV, and she sang Dansen aan zee (Dancing at the seaside) by BLØF in a duet with this popular Zeeland band. Five days on the radio Sanne continued to develop herself, not only as a songwriter, but also as a performer. With her live band, also named Miss Montreal, she started doing gigs in the country. From the small hall of Paradiso to a successful performance at the large Groningen festival Noorderslag in January 2009. After the release of the second single, This Is My Life, Miss Montreal played at several major liberation festivals in the Netherlands. From 11 to 15 May 2009, every morning between 6 and 10 am Sanne could be heard on the radio as the sidekick of Giel Beelen. How did she like that? “It was delightful! I enjoyed it só much, because I completely felt at home there and also because I already had a very special bond with Giel. And if you share joys and sorrows with each other for five days in a row and everyone can hear it, that’s pretty intense. But at the same time it was super fun!” Were there preceding evenings during those five days at which she had a gig? “There was one evening where I had a gig and on another evening I went out 26


until half past three at night. Every night in my hotel room, I was unable to fall asleep quickly, because in a different place than home I always sleep very poorly. Every night I often didn’t doze off before half past three. And at half past four I had to get up again... Well, then you really are exhausted afterwards! At the end of that week, when my first CD came out, I was so incredibly tired that I burst into tears.” Her debut album, simply entitled Miss Montreal, appeared on 15 May 2009. The music was played by her permanent companions, Kobus Groen (bass guitar, backing vocals), Michi ‘Mitch’ Schwiemann (guitar) and Thijs Rensink (drums). One of the tracks from the album, Won’t You Let Me Have My Way With You, is a duet with singer-songwriter Bertolf (Bertolf Lentink), who previously had played in the band of Ilse DeLange and then had gone solo. Also on the record are new versions of the Ysis songs Rose and Ricardo. In the summer of 2009, the band played on dozens of festivals, including Lowlands in Biddinghuizen (Flevoland), Parkpop in The Hague (with 275,000 visitors!), Beatstad in The Hague and Zwarte Cross in Lichtenvoorde (Gelderland). In the autumn of 2009, Sanne and her fellow musicians performed in 30 Dutch concert halls; and in the Goffertpark in Nijmegen, for 70,000 visitors, they opened for the British top group Coldplay. Sanne: “When I perform for a huge audience, I often think: ‘Wow, what’s happening to me now?’ But I never have the time to take it all in.” Just like the first two singles, the two successors, Seven Friends and Addicted to Crying, got plenty of airplay. Addicted to Crying is about a friend of the singer, Bart, who had gone on a holiday a few years earlier and did not return from it. Was writing this number a way to handle this loss? “I wrote it not so much for myself, but rather for his family members. They were all devastated by it. Because I felt só terrible for them, I wrote and recorded this song. I just wanted to do that for them.” Did this give the family a bit of comfort? “Yes, very much so. That was nice to hear.”

Just before 2009 came to an end, Miss Montreal scored her biggest hit thus far: Being alone at Christmas. This upbeat Christmas song was the most played song on the Dutch radio in the last two weeks of the year. The single reached the number 1 position in the Dutch Airplay Charts and climbed to number 5 in the Top-40. On 16 July 2010, the next album of Miss Montreal came out: So... Anything Else? It contained more mature work, but still with that authentic, typical ‘Sanne sound’. In the meantime, the band had received reinforcement in the person of keyboardist Peter Hendriks. Swing the Night Away, the first single from the second album, immediately hit the bull’s eye and in the week of 18 June 2010 gained the status of 3FM Megahit. Success with theatre shows, judge on talent shows In Paradiso, Amsterdam, Miss Montreal on 11 April 2012 presented album number three: I Am Hunter. For this record Sanne had joined forces with songwriters and producers Joshua Crosby and Nate Campany from Nashville, USA. In the winter of

2011/2012, Miss Montreal had a hit on her hands with the first single from it, Wish I Could. Because it was the most played song on 3FM in 2011, Sanne on 3 April 2012 was awarded the Schaal van Rigter (Rigter Scale) in the Coen en Sander Show. From October 2012 until March 2013, Sanne and her band members in a multitude of places staged their first theatre show, S-SS-SSSSanne, in which the singer manifested herself both musically and personally. This successful tour was accompanied by a special Miss Montreal magazine with news, photos and facts by and about Miss Montreal, as well as a CD released for this show. In 2012, Sanne became judge of the TV talent show De Beste Singer-Songwriter van Nederland (The Best Singer-Songwriter of the Netherlands). On that occasion she met candidate Niels Littooij, better known by his artist name Nielson. Together they recorded the song Hoe (How), and they both did well out of it, because in 2013 this song propelled to number 4 in the Top-40 and number 5 in the Single Top 100. On top of that, the single earned the platinum status (back then 20,000 copies sold, since 1 July 2016 twice that number). Speaking of singer-songwriters: although there seem to be relatively few of them in the Netherlands, and certainly among women, yet that is not the case, Sanne knows. “There are actually a lot of singersongwriters in the Netherlands, but there are only a few that really stand out.” On 5 May 2013, in her capacity as Ambassador of Freedom, she visited several liberation festivals in the Netherlands by helicopter. In Assen, Groningen, Leeuwarden, Almere and Zwolle she sang the song Helden (Heroes), which she and Simon Keizer of the musical duo Nick & Simon had written for this occasion. “We must whisper the message of freedom to the younger generation, so that history is not forgotten,” she emphasised on that day. A notable release in 2013 was that of The Home Recordings, a collection of 18 recordings and demos that Miss Montreal had made at home. The fourth (regular) album, Irrational, on 28

February 2014 hit the physical and digital shelves. Turning out to be the biggest winner was the single Say Heaven Say Hell, which went gold (at the time 10,000 copies sold, nowadays 20,000 pieces). It also became the theme song of the Dutch reality TV series Utopia and the German and Turkish versions of it, called Newtopia and Ütopya, respectively. In February 2015, she kicked off her second theatre show, Onmeunig Sanne. ‘Onmeunig’ is a dialect word from the eastern Overijssel region Twente and means as much as ‘incredibly’ or ‘extremely’ (in Dutch: ‘ontzettend’). As in her previous show, she remained close to herself, as was reflected, for instance, in the number Los bij elkaar (Loose together), which is about the divorce of her parents. To promote this tour, she had recorded the song Ik zoek alleen mezelf (I only look for myself) with BLØF singer Paskal Jakobsen. Both songs were put on a five-track EP linked to the theatre show. Furthermore, the online theatre magazine Onmeunig Sanne appeared, as well as the compilation album The Singles Collection, which entered the Album Top 100 at number two! Fond of playing live Sanne has never doubted her career choice. “I never wanted to do anything else than what I do right now,” she says full of conviction.” 29


But not everyone who has a preconceived career plan also manages to turn that into reality. But she did. How did she achieve that? Through an iron will? “Among other things, but also thanks to a network I had built up in the music business, as a result of which I gradually got more and more work. Ánd by adhering to the principle that whatever people say about you, it’s more important what yóu think.” When you perform live as often as she does, you’re in fact practicing top sport, I point out to her. “Yes, I found that out real quickly. In the early days of our band’s existence, we once had three gigs in one week, after which I was bróken! I had muscle pain in my buttocks, my legs, my back – everything hurt. But I find it só much fun to play live!” Aren’t there any songs she has played live so often that she gradually got tired of them? “No, I don’t have that yet,” she replies without any hesitation. “The most important thing is that you have fun with each other. If I look at one of my band members during a gig and he’s smiling broadly, then I start doing that, too. And I find it só cool when I see that the audience en masse is enjoying our music. When everybody from beginning to end goes ballistic and jumps along, I go: ‘Wow, that’s what I’m doing it for!’ Even if I would experience that a thousand, million or trillion times, I cannot get enough of it!” Every now and then Miss Montreal gives her own interpretation to the work of others. A wonderful example of that is the 1931 jazz classic All of Me, written by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons. About this song, she says: “I think this is an stunningly beautiful number. With this kind of songs I want to show that I master multiple music styles.” Own festival and TV show From September 2015 to January 2016, Sanne was one of the four judges/coaches of the TV show The Voice of Holland. Sitting in the red chairs beside her were her peers and compatriots Anouk, Ali B and Marco Borsato. With the latter, she sang the duet Neem me mee (Take me along), released in November 2015. In the Evenementenhal in her hometown Hardenberg, Sanne on 7 November 2015 held her first own pop festival: Bierpop. Why this name? Very simple, as is explained on the festival website: because good music and beer have in common that 30

it is onmeunig tasty. Last year the festival, on which, among others, Handsome Poets, Nielson, Paskal Jakobsen and Guus Meewis performed, attracted 6,000 spectators and was thus completely sold out. With this year’s Bierpop, taking place on 19 November, Sanne goes one step further by not only establishing the musical programme, but also an indoor camping, so that festival goers can stay there overnight (in tents). The line-up of Bierpop 2016 at this moment (late September 2016) comprises De Dijk, Memphis Maniacs, Bökkers and of course Miss Montreal herself. On 22 April 2016, Sanne presented her latest long player, Don’t Wake Me Up. This happened at the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, where she gave a concert to a packed audience that night. On this new album, she combines real festival bangers like One Last Drink and Love You Now with intimite songs like House Upon The Hill and Thank You, which she wrote with British singer-songwriter Will Knox. Meanwhile, she also has her own TV programme, Lieve S-S-Sanne (Dear S-S-Sanne), which was first broadcast on 7 September 2016. For this series, Sanne writes songs based on – sometimes heartbreaking – stories of fans who want to surprise someone with a personal music number. In this way, Sanne wants to give something back to her fans, who have supported her so faithfully for years. Sanne: “I don’t know the stories in advance, so that it is as pure and beautiful as possible. I write every


music number in the moment for the person in question.” For her work Sanne has been awarded several times. In 2014 and 2016, she won the 3FM Award for Best Female Singer and in February 2016, she was lauded with the 100% NL Award in 2015 for Best Female Singer of the Year. On 22 March 2017, the third theatre tour by Miss Montreal starts, entitled Ssss-s… Ach, laat ook maar (Ssss-s... Ah, never mind). The tour ends on 8 June 2017. Once again Sanne will expose a great deal of her soul by bringing personal stories from her daily life into the limelight. UTOPIA utopia

‘That is no country for old men. The young in one another’s arms…’ chanted the old Irish poet W.B. Yeats who was yearning for his long lost youth a century ago. Utopias are for the young and the unwary ones. Now when I was young and easy, I began my teaching career at a comprehensive school in wild western The Hague called ‘Het Thomas More College’. This happened in the seventies of the previous century and I was still in my fifth year at university. I thought a teaching job a good idea to earn some money and get some teaching experience at the same time. It turned out to be a bad idea. Most of my pupils were a few years younger than I was, and I looked sixteen. So you can imagine how difficult it was to maintain order and to keep my distance. Each morning when I cycled across The Hague along the Zuiderpark to the school at the Beresteinlaan, my head filled itself with ideas and ideals. Cycling back to the Bezuidenhout where I lived, I was struggling with feelings of despair and frustration.

The pupils and I were clearly not of the same mind. It was their ambition to send me off to a madhouse as quickly as possible, while it was my fervent dream to expose them to my idea of utopia: a place full of inquisitive young learners discussing exciting literature and profound philosophy. All in vain of course. In the end the pupils did not succeed in driving me crazy and to my knowledge not one pupil allowed himself or herself to be converted to my belief in the benefits of High Culture. So why did I continue to vent these utopian ideals? Simple. My pupils and I were spending most of our young lives in a school building which was named after the great Thomas More. Thomas More was the famous scholar and later saint who wrote the impressive essay called Utopia. The book was published in Leuven under the editorship of my other spiritual hero Erasmus of Rotterdam in 1516 (this year exactly five hundred years ago).

Utopia is set in the New World (which had been discovered only a few years before) and depicts a fictional society with its religious, social and political customs. ‘Utopia’ is derived from the Greek words ‘eu’ (good) and ‘ou’ (not) and ‘topos’ (place). Thomas More coined a word that could mean both ‘no place land’ as well as ‘good place land’. So Utopia is the best of all republics and it is nowhere to be found. Clever eh? In ‘Utopia’ Thomas More was not trying to depict his idea of an ideal civilization where all people can live happily in harmony, no, the book was an acerbic attack on European society in all its wickedness. He wrote: ‘When I consider any social system that prevails in the modern world, I can’t see it as anything but a conspiracy of the rich to advance their own interests under the pretext of organizing society. They think up all sorts of tricks and dodges, first for keeping safe their ill-gotten gains, and then for exploiting the poor by buying their labour as cheaply as possible. Once the rich have decided that these tricks and dodges shall be officially recognized by society, they acquire the force of law. Thus an unscrupulous minority is led by its insatiable greed to monopolize what would have been enough to supply the needs of the whole population.’ (translated by Paul Turner, Penguin 1965) 33

Will this reality series provide an answer to a true utopia? Or is it just another trick of the rich to become even richer? Another dodge to exploit the poor and dimwits by buying their labour as cheaply as possible, as Thomas More prophesied five hundred years ago.

The name UTOPIA is buzzing around the Dutch media, as you may have noticed. Dutch television station SBS6 has a daily reality show which started 31 December 2013 at 7.30 pm. It is being produced by the same people who invented ‘Big Brother’ in 1999. This time the formula is even more spectacular: fifteen men and women have to live and work together in an enclosed area. The slogan of the series is: ‘Wordt het ultiem geluk of complete chaos?’ (will it be all-out happiness or complete chaos?). The fifteen participants are extremely divergent. In the beginning there was one barefooted vagrant called Rienk. This dogmatic old-school idealist wanted to create a new society. He did not want his socks to wear out, nor did he want others to drink alcohol. He was not afraid to impose his will on the others and apparently he was the only who had read Thomas More’s ‘Utopia’. ‘Het ware Utopia zit in de geest’, Rienk said. True Utopia is in the mind! True. Too true, perhaps. But what is true Utopia? Half a year later he left the barracks. In the meantime, Dutch CEO John de Mol sold the format to the 34

100 years Schiphol “One hundred years Schiphol is the story of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly”, says King WillemAlexander in his speech during the celebrations of 100 hundred years of Schiphol on the 19th of September. The King reminisces on the situation as it was when he first started flying thirty years ago. Topman Jos Nijhuis mentioned that the airport has almost reached its capacity with 63 million travellers each year. “We cannot be the largest airport on the world, but we can be the best on sustainability, innovation, quality and perception. It is the only airport still on its original location. Cute and historically interesting, but it is in a densely populated and intensely used area.

The Last Judgement

by Lucas van Leyden in Rijksmuseum For the coming two years the Rijksmuseum’s Gallery of Honour is hosting ‘The Last Judgement’ (1526-27), the sixteenth-century work of genius by Lucas van Leyden. Over the last 450 years the altarpiece has left Leiden for brief periods only twice, which makes its temporary relocation to Amsterdam a historic event. The triptych is without doubt the jewel in the crown of Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden, which is scheduled to close its doors this autumn for a large-scale renovation and extension project. The Last Judgement is on show in the Rijksmuseum’s Gallery of Honour from 23 August. ‘The Last Judgement by Lucas van Leyden is the most important surviving altarpiece in the Netherlands,’ says Taco Dibbits, Rijksmuseum General Director. We are therefore very honoured to be able to show this masterpiece from Museum De Lakenhal in the Gallery of Honour for the next two years.’ ‘This is a splendid way to give The Last Judgement the international fame it deserves in the Gallery of Honour,’ adds Meta Knol, Museum De Lakenhal Director. ‘When our museum reopens, the painting will be back in its usual place in the permanent collection of the rejuvenated Museum De Lakenhal.’ Rembrandt and Lucas van Leyden Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533) was recognized as a prodigy throughout Europe at an early stage because of his sublime etchings and drawings. This draughtsman, printmaker and painter was an important source of inspiration for many generations of painters, Rembrandt van Rijn among them. Rembrandt was brought up in Leiden and it was there that he embarked on his career as a painter. The Last Judgement was on show in Leiden Town Hall continuously from the end of the sixteenth century until it was moved to Museum De Lakenhal in 1874. Rembrandt is certain to have seen it there. The painting’s presentation in the Rijksmuseum is a unique opportunity to show the triptych in the Gallery of Honour in the context of Rembrandt masterpieces. Lucas van Leyden, Printmaker and Painter Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533) is known as the pioneer of the Renaissance in the Northern Netherlands. His prints depicting biblical and secular subjects stood out because of their unprecedentedly refined engraving technique and narrative quality. After 1520 Lucas started to concentrate on painting and he made three altarpieces, including The Last Judgement and The Dance around the Golden Calf (c. 1530, Rijksmuseum collection). A striking aspect of his work is the suggestion of immeasurable space, as exemplified in The Last Judgement. The huge triptych, which dates from 1526-27, is the pinnacle of his oeuvre. The painting shows how the dead arise from their graves on the Day of Judgement in order to meet their destiny. They are carried by gentle angels or by diabolical figures. The painting was commissioned for the Church of St Peter in Leiden. Shortly thereafter, during the iconoclasm, it and other art treasures were taken to safety by the Leiden city authorities. Since 1874 the altarpiece, together with Leiden’s municipal collections, has been permanently accessible to the public in Museum De Lakenhal. Virtuoso Underdrawing In 2015 The Last Judgement was the subject of a joint investigation by the Rijksmuseum, Museum De Lakenhal and the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD). During which a virtuoso underdrawing was discovered. 100 jaar Vierdaagse in Nijmegen

Dit jaar vond in Nijmegen de 100ste Vierdaagse plaats. Wat in 1909 begon als een meerdaagse wandelmars waaraan 306 wandelaars (296 militairen en 10 burgers), is uitgegroeid tot het grootste meerdaagse wandelevenement ter wereld waaraan ruim 42.000 militairen en burgers uit 70 landen deelnemen.

Vierdaagse feest (eropuit)

oftewel het Vierdaagsekruis. Koningin Wilhelmina heeft in 1909 in een Koninklijk Besluit infanteristen beneden de rang van officier, toestemming verleend om het kruis op hun uniform te dragen. De marsvaardigheid van cavalerie en marine leek minder belangrijk. Pas in het Koninklijk Besluit van 21 november 1928 werd aan àlle militairen van de Landmacht toestemming gegeven het Vierdaagsekruis op het uniform te dragen. In de jaren daarna werd ook aan militairen van de zee- en luchtstrijdkrachten dezelfde toestemming verleend. Deelname aan de Vierdaagsemarsen was lang voorbehouden aan mannen. De eerste vrouw krijgt pas in 1919 het bondskruis opgespeld, zij volbracht de 50 kilometer tocht. Het jaar daarop zijn de afstandsmogelijkheden opnieuw opgesteld; burgers kunnen dan kiezen tussen 45 of 55 kilometer, militairen met bepakking 40, zonder bepakking 50 terwijl vrouwen 40 kilometer moeten afleggen. Start en finish vinden plaats in Nijmegen, de deelnemers overnachten op de Infanteriekazerne. In 1925 wordt Nijmegen definitief uitgeroepen tot Vierdaagsestad. In 1928 mogen voor het eerst buitenlanders deelnemen aan de vierdaagse. Er zijn deelnemers uit Duitsland, Groot Brittannië, Frankrijk en Noorwegen. Ook wordt dan de eerste vlaggenparade gehouden.

De geschiedenis van de Vierdaagse begint in 1909. De Nederlandse Bond voor Lichamelijke Opvoeding (NBvLO) organiseren dan de eerste ‘Vierdaagsche Afstandsmarschen’. Deelnemers konden vanuit 13 verschillende plaatsen in Nederland starten en moesten 140 km afleggen in vier dagen, 35 km per dag. Er gingen 306 mannelijke deelnemers, waaronder 10 burgers van start. Bij de start vanuit Arnhem in 1910, kon worden gekozen uit meerdere afstanden: 35, 45 of 55 kilometer. Slechts 41 wandelaars namen dat jaar deel. In 1912 werd gestart vanuit Utrecht maar de derde dag verbleven de wandelaars in Nijmegen waar zij ook de vierde dag over de finish kwamen. Hiermee was een ‘Nijmeegse traditie’ geboren. Vierdaagsekruis Vanwege de Eerste Wereldoorlog werden er in 1914 en 1915 geen vierdaagsemarsen georganiseerd. In 1916 is Kamp Nieuw Milligen dagelijks start en finishplaats van zowel de 152 deelnemende militairen als ook voor de voor het eerst meelopende burgers, zes in getal. In 1917 werd voor het eerst de gevechtsvaardigheidseis aan militairen gesteld. Deze hield in dat zij binnen een uur na de mars een 800 meter lang parcours met hindernissen moesten afleggen, met daaropvolgend 200 meter snelloop. Pas als men hiertoe nog in staat was, had men recht op het Kruis voor betoonde marsvaardigheid,

al getwijfeld of het parcours niet te vol wordt. Wanneer de Duitsers op 10 mei 1940 Nederland binnenvallen, zijn de voorbereidingen voor de 30ste Vierdaagse in volle gang. Op 16 juni wordt echter besloten de Vierdaagse af te gelasten. Zes jaar lang zal Nijmegen het zonder het wandelevenement moeten stellen, op een noodvierdaagse na die in 1940 wordt georganiseerd. Pas in 1946 gaat de 30-ste vierdaagse van start met ruim 4000 deelnemers. Via Gladiola In 1970 wordt het wandelevenement uitgebreid met allerlei festiviteiten die verspreid over Nijmegen plaatsvinden. Deze Zomerfeesten worden georganiseerd door het speciaal daarvoor opgerichte Nijmeegse Actief Comité Binnenstad. In de loop der jaren zijn ook de Zomerfeesten uitgegroeid tot een enorm festijn. Ruim 1,5 miljoen mensen genieten tijdens de wandelweek van muziek, theater, terrassen en kraampjes met eten. Bij de 60-ste vierdaagse in 1976 is het wandellegioen gegroeid tot ruim 17.000 deelnemers en wordt de eerste vierdaagse-postzegel door de PTT uitgegeven. In 1983 krijgt de vierdaagse zijn eigen gladiool “Vierdaagse”. De Sint Annastraat die de wandelaars leidt naar de finish wordt omgedoopt tot Via Gladiola. In 1991, de 75-ste vierdaagse, schrijven meer dan 40.000 mensen zich in. Een dusdanig aantal waardoor de organisatie een jaar later verder test op een elektronisch aan- en afmeldsysteem dat in 1993 definitief wordt ingevoerd voor alle wandelaars.

In 1995 mogen ook rolstoelers officieel meedoen aan de Vierdaagse. Zij krijgen echter geen Vierdaagsekruis maar de Penning van de Stad Nijmegen. In 2004 limiteert de organisatie het deelnemersaantal op 45.000 en een jaar later wordt dat opgerekt naar 47.500. De 90-ste editie van de vierdaagse in 2006 duurt slecht één dag. Door de weersomstandigheden wordt de organisatie overspoeld met hulpaanvragen en overlijden uiteindelijk 2 mensen. Sinds die dramatisch verlopen Vierdaagse maakt een weerkundige deel uit van de organisatie en zijn extra veiligheidsmaatregelen ingevoerd op het parcours.

Roze Woensdag In 2002 wordt de tweede dag van de Vierdaagse omgedoopt tot Roze Woensdag. Het is onderdeel van de Vierdaagsefeesten en wordt met het oog op buitenlandse deelnemers ook wel Pink Wednesday genoemd. Deze dag staat in het teken van steun aan lesbiennes, homo’s, biseksuelen en transgenders (lhbt). Tijdens de Roze Woensdag zijn veel wandelaars in het roze gekleed en hebben de podia en de feesten in de stad een speciaal op lhbt’ers gerichte programmering. Het evenement is daarmee vergelijkbaar met de Roze Maandag, die jaarlijks wordt gevierd tijdens de Tilburgse Kermis. De oorsprong van het ontstaan van Roze Woensdag voert terug naar de Vierdaagse van 1983. Tijdens de Nijmeegse Vierdaagse lopen van oudsher veel militairen mee, maar dat ging regelmatig gepaard met het zingen van agressieve en seksistische liederen en met vechtpartijen tussen de militairen en groepen Molukkers uit Nijmegen. Ook homoseksuele mannen en lesbische en feministische vrouwen en hun ontmoetingsplaatsen moesten het geregeld ontgelden. Tijdens de Zomerfeesten van 1983 probeerden relschoppende jongeren met geweld een homocafé binnen te dringen en werd er zelfs een molotovcocktail naar binnen gegooid. Veel homo’s en vrouwen gingen tijdens de Vierdaagseweek dan ook liever de stad uit. Naar aanleiding van deze rellen stelde COC Nijmegen het “Zwartboek Zomerfeesten 1983” op. Dit was voor het Roze Front en de organisator van de Roze Zaterdagen reden om de Roze Zaterdag van 1984 in Nijmegen te laten plaatsvinden om daarmee de lokale homobeweging te steunen. Een ander gevolg was dat de gemeente in 1987 met een eerste nota voor homo- en lesbisch beleid kwam en in 1988, als eerste in Nederland, een klankbordgroep instelde om over homo- en lesbische kwesties te adviseren. Ondertussen was vanuit het COC-tijdschrift PINK en horecazaken in de Van Welderenstraat het initiatief genomen voor een eigen roze straatfeest tijdens de Vierdaagse. Vanaf 2002 werd dit door de homobars De Verjaardag en The Great Pretender in de Van Welderenstraat onder de naam Roze Woensdag georganiseerd, naar het voorbeeld van de Roze Maandag in Tilburg en de landelijke Roze Zaterdagen. Het centrum van de Roze Woensdag is aan de

Hertogstraat met veel roze versiering. Ook hebben de homozaken elders in de stad een speciale feestelijke programmering. In 2016 voer tijdens Roze Woensdag een versierd bootje met drag queens over de Waal, in wat de “kleinste gay pride ter wereld” genoemd werd. 100ste Vierdaagse Om de 100ste Vierdaagse in 2016 extra luister bij te zetten, en vooral om het sportieve karakter ervan te benadrukken, zijn aan deze editie wat extra elementen toegevoegd. Onder de noemer ‘Ereronde’ is door een groep van totaal 100 wandelaars, verdeeld over 4 groepen van 25, in die editie 100 kilometer gewandeld. Op elke marsdag volbracht een groep deze bijzondere prestatie. Een extra ronde van 50 kilometer om de deelnemers, de wandelsport én de Vierdaagse gedenkwaardig te eren. Voor deelname aan de ‘Ereronde’ is er geen vrije inschrijving. Personen uit de verschillende groepen werden speciaal door de Vierdaagseorganisatie uitgenodigd. De deelnemers aan deze zogenoemde ‘Ereronde’ liepen telkens op de avond voorafgaand aan de vier reguliere wandeldagen het 50 kilometerparcours voor de eerste maal. Daarna volgde een korte rust in de nacht, waarna de 25 ‘Ereronde-lopers’ samen met de overige 50 kilometer-wandelaars opnieuw de route liepen. De deelnemers aan de Ereronde bestond uit een mix van de gekende lange Afstandswandelaars,

geüniformeerde wandelaars afkomstig uit Defensie, Politie en Douane, buitenlandse deelnemers, prominente wandelaars en de ‘doorsnee Vierdaagsewandelaar’. De jongste deelnemer was 25 jaar oud, de oudste 71. De inschrijving voor de 100ste Vierdaagse stond eenmalig open voor 50.000 deelnemers. Niettemin was het aantal inschrijvingen zo groot dat er toch geloot moest worden voor deelname. De loting vond plaats op 8 april 2016, exact 100 dagen voor de start van de Vierdaagseweek. Ook werd eenmalig de klassieke afstand van 55 km toegevoegd aan de wandelmogelijkheden. De 55 km-afstand was tot en met 1966 de verplichte Vierdaagse-afstand voor mannen tussen de 19 en 50 jaar oud, nu mag iedereen zich inschrijven voor deze afstand. Koning Willem Alexander was tijdens de speciale jubileumeditie van de Vierdaagse aanwezig. Niet alleen zat hij op de eretribune aan de Via Gladiola om de wandelaars te verwelkomen maar tot ieders verrassing liep hij in Cuijk een stukje van het parcours mee. Sinds de eerste Vierdaagse in 1909 is in alle 100 edities de insteek hetzelfde gebleven. Vier dagen achter elkaar zijn de deelnemers urenlang aan het wandelen en iedereen krijgt na afloop een onderscheiding. De Vierdaagse is een feest van verbroedering tussen mensen van verschillende leeftijden, nationaliteiten, komaf, religies, geaardheid en hun maatschappelijke rollen. En dat zal, wat de Vierdaagsestad Nijmegen betreft, nog heel lang in stand worden gehouden. Inmiddels zijn de voorbereidingen voor de Vierdaagse van 2017 alweer in volle gang. Great start for darts players Van Gerwen and Van Barneveld in Sydney

On Tuesday 16 August, four of the greatest darts players in the world gathered in Sydney to play a friendly darts competition, to celebrate the historical ties between Australia and the Netherlands. In the company of hundreds of visitors of both Dutch and Australian descent, the Dutch stars Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld defeated their Australian rivals Simon “the Wizard” Whitlock and Kyle Anderson.

The four darts players voluntarily participated in the event in the centre of Sydney. “It is incredibly special that such world class players want to contribute to the 400th Dutch-Australian anniversary”, said Consul-General Willem Cosijn. This year, Australia and the Netherlands celebrate the arrival of the VOC skipper Dirk Hartog as the first European to the West Coast of Australia 400 years ago. In the light of the anniversary, the King and Queen of the Netherlands will visit Australia in November. Van Gerwen, Van Barneveld, Whitlock and Anderson are currently participating in the official Sydney Darts Masters tournament. The Consulate-General in Sydney made use of the opportunity by organising the Dutch-Australian gathering. The Netherlands won by 5-3.

DONKERVOORT The Record Breaking Dutch Sports Cars

Some of the fastest sports cars in the world, whether on road or track, are made by Donkervoort in the Netherlands. Joop Donkervoort began building cars in a shed in Tienhoven in 1978. Established as Donkervoort Automobielen BV, the company shifted its premises to Loosdrecht several years later, before its last move to Lelystad, where it has a modern plant beside the A6. Further expansion occurred in 2014, with the opening of a facility at the Bilster Berg Drive Resort in Germany.

Donkervoort cars are built by hand, ultra lightweight, and contain high-tech carbon fiber parts. The cars are noted for their tremendous sleekness, long hood, and low profile. Donkervoort used European Ford engines to power its autos up until 1999, when a switch to Audi power-plants was made. Donkervoort’s slogan, “No Compromise,” is a reference to the back-to-basics philosophy of driving without assistance systems such as power steering and anti-lock brakes. When you drive a Donkervoort, rather than being somewhat detached from the vehicle by corrective computer systems, you are connected to and feel the car, and how it responds to the road. Donkervoort buyers even go through driving courses to learn how to handle their new cars in various conditions, such as on wet roads.

The Donkervoort Cup was a racing event held in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and elsewhere from 1993 to 2001. This competition allowed private owners of Donkervoot cars to compete, while receiving professional mechanical and technical support. Participants also enjoyed the catering and hospitality which were provided. THE S SERIES Joop Donkervoort’s first car was the S7 (Super Seven). It was fitted with a 1.6-litre Ford Crossflow 90 horsepower engine, a four-speed transmission, and could go to 106 mph. The rear axle came from a Ford, while the front suspension was comprised of Triumph parts. However, the S7 didn’t meet type approval for operation on Dutch roads, so Donkervoort set about making modifications which led to the next model, the S8 (Super Eight).

Produced in limited numbers, Donkervoort cars are intended for true motoring enthusiasts. You can order a Donkervoort in almost any body color and interior finish. The S8, introduced in 1983, had a 2-litre engine with up to 110 hp, and a five-speed gearbox. Both the S7 and S8 had dual aluminum fuel tanks, and a double braking system. Donkervoort produced about 140 S7 and S8 cars from its premises in Tienhoven.

After Donkervoort moved to Loosdrecht in 1983, the company began development of the S8A, which appeared in 1985. This model had a widened chassis, fuel injection, and independent rear wheel suspension. The fenders and nose were also redesigned, and its 2-litre Ford engine produced 117 hp. The S8 and S8A had the same overall dimensions as did the S7, but were Dutch-street-legal.

The D8 Zetec Classic succeeded the S8AT in 1993. It was fitted with the then-new 1.8-litre Ford Zetec 140 hp engine. Donkervoort added the D8 Zetec Sport model in 1994. Construction of this car made extensive use of carbon fiber materials. The sport model was given a modernized nose and grille, a curved windshield, and a 2-litre engine producing 160 hp.

Donkervoort later offered a turbocharged variation, the S8AT. Using the S8A 2-litre engine, the turbocharger brought the engine output to 170 hp. The chassis was widened again, and stiffened. There was also a 2.2-litre variant, which gave 190 hp.

The D20 was the first Donkervoort design made in cooperation with Audi. With a 6-cylinder 280 hp engine, the D20 had its gearbox shifted to the rear axle. However, the D20’s Audi motor wasn’t able to meet emission standards, so the car didn’t get type approval. The D20 remained at prototype stage, and Donkervoort instead focused on developing the D8 with the Audi 1.8-litre motor (the engine which was used in the Audi TT.)

THE D SERIES For the company’s tenth anniversary in 1988, Donkervoort brought out the D10. Introduced at the Paris Auto Show, its minimalist design, which evokes that of racing cars of the 1930s, was without windshield or spare wheel. Its turbocharged 2160 cc engine produced 190 hp, and some very late models circa 1994 had a 280 hp Cosworth engine. Due to its open cockpit configuration, Donkervoort included a matching driving helmet with the purchase of the car! Only 10 D10 examples were made. In 1989, on a temporarily closed section of motorway, a D10 went from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.85 seconds, breaking the world acceleration record for a production car.

The D8 Cosworth, presented in 1994, had a 2-litre Ford Cosworth turbo engine of 220 to 280 hp. It could go to 146 mph, and do 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 to 4.1 seconds. The D8 Cosworth Classic had standard fenders, while the Sport version had bicycle type fenders which fit closely over the tires. The 1999 D8 Audi (AGU) had a turbocharged 1.8-litre Audi motor which produced from 150 to 245 hp. The Audi engine was lighter and more compact than was the Ford power-plant, and easily met the emission standards of the time. 50


Donkervoort began using the Audi 1.8-litre 20V E-Gas (electronic throttle) engine in 2003 for the D8, which produced from 150 to 270 hp. At a weight of only 630 kg, the D8 could go from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 to 3.8 seconds, depending on engine type.

1.8-litre 270 hp Audi engine. With much of the car made of carbon fiber, this model at 650 kg was the world’s lightest GT car. The GT has a wider track and larger brakes (designed by Tarox of Italy) than does the standard D8, and it rides on custom 17inch aluminum wheels (made by Rays Engineering of Japan). A D8 GT took second place in the FIA GT4 European Cup. A D8 GT also raced in the 2011 24H Dubai, and won first place in the SP3-GT4 class.

The Donkervoort J25 was a prototype car meant to mark the company’s 25th anniversary. Taking some design cues from the D20, the code-named J25 was given small doors and a new nose, and it was the first Donkervoort car to sport 270 hp.

Presented in 2008 was the D8 270, which succeeded the D8 270 RS. Again powered by the Audi 1.8-litre engine, it had a newly shaped grille and nose, and could go 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. As of 2011, the D8 270 was one of the fastest cars on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with a time of 7 minutes, 14.9 seconds.

The limited edition D8 270 RS was introduced in 2005. It was based on the D8 RS, which broke lap records in 2004 and 2005 at Nürburgring. Twentyfive examples of this model were made. The D8 270 RS, with the turbocharged 1.8-litre 270 hp Audi motor, could go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, and from 100 km/h to 0 in 2.4 seconds.

The D8 GTO, the prototype of which was unveiled at the end of 2011, had a 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbocharged Audi engine with up to 340 hp. With its entire body made of carbon fiber, the GTO weighs less than 700 kg. It can go 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8

The D8 GT, which premiered in 2007 at the Geneva Motor Show, was the first Donkervoort with an enclosed cabin. It was fitted with a turbocharged

seconds. The D8 Premium GTO was produced in a limited edition of 25 in 2013. The standard D8 GTO, offered in both Performance and Touring models, began production in 2014.

use on the track only, and is not street-legal. The prices of the current models are about $130,000, $170,000, and $282,000, respectively.

A Donkervoort D8 GTO broke a speed record in September 2014 at the Bilster Berg Drive Resort, completing a lap in 1 minute 46.12 seconds. This was a record for a street-legal production car. Donkervoort offered its Bilster Berg Edition, based on the record-breaking 2014 test car, in a limited edition of 14 examples. With refined chassis and handling, the Bilster Berg Edition has a dark nose section made of carbon fiber.

CURRENT CARS Donkervoort’s present lineup of cars, all of them new for 2016, comprises of three versions of the D8 GTO. The D8 GTO S (Sport) is a luxury tourer, providing extra comfort for driver and passenger whether on city streets or on Europe’s mountain roads. The D8 GTO RS is the latest incarnation of the RS, and is the ultimate variation of the D8 GTO. Production of this model is restricted to 40 units. The D8 GTO R (Race), which Donkervoort calls a “thoroughbred circuit monster,” is a racing car for

Jan en Kaspar Luiken: Het Menselyk Bedryf

De garentwijnder Garen wordt gemaakt door vezels te spinnen, in elkaar te draaien. Een losse gesponnen draad is kwetsbaar. Om hem dikker en sterker te maken moet hij worden getwijnd. Daarbij worden twee of meer draden in elkaar gedraaid tot het uiteindelijk dik garen of zelfs touw wordt. Door het in elkaar te rollen en er stevig op te slaan worden de draden steviger met elkaar verbonden, soepeler en zachter. De draad wordt dan overal even dik. Dat proces zien we hier op de afbeelding. Twee werklui - een met muts en voorschoot en de andere blootshoofds - slaan met zware knuppels op een streng garen. De twijnder houdt de streng op de juiste spanning. Hij is de enige die zit, stijf rechtop op een kist. Op de tekening is het een jongen nog, op de ets heeft hij een kalend hoofd en een snor. Zijn hoed staat rechtop tegen de kist. Veel hoeft hij niet te doen. Hij regelt de vastheid waarmee de garens ineengedraaid worden. Telkens als de streng goed geslagen is, draait hij de streng weer wat aan en dan begint het proces opnieuw. Op de achtergrond loopt een knappe jonge vrouw het huis in. Draagt ze bewerkt garen of heeft ze de was gedaan bij de buitenpomp? Uit een van de bovenramen steekt een stok met wat armelijk wasgoed en een paar strengen garen. In de verte zien we een vrouwenfiguur. Daarachter staat een huis of pakhuis met alleen boven enkele kleine ramen. Misschien zijn het zijramen, net als bij het huis verderop. Ze hebben allemaal ongebruikelijk lage daken. Waarschijnlijk zijn we hier buiten het centrum, waar meer ruimte is. Interessant is het om te zien hoe Luyken al in de tekening heel nauwkeurig een wolkenhemel heeft geschetst die hij daarna even nauwgezet heeft gegraveerd. Tekst en beeld zijn hier heel nauw verbonden.

Het lijkt wel haat Maar kan geen kwaad.

The Twiner Yarn is made by spinning threads, interweaving them. A single spun thread is fragile. To make it thicker and stronger, it must be twined. In this process, two or more threads are interwoven until it becomes thick yarn or even rope. By rolling it together and powerfully hammering it, the threads become more connected with each other, more flexible and softer. In this way, the yarn will have the same overall thickness. This process we see on the image below. Two workmen – one with a hat and apron, the other bareheaded – are pummeling the skein of yarn with heavy cudgels. The twiner is holding the skein in the right tension. He is the only one sitting down, straight-backed on a chest. On the drawing it is still a boy, but in the etch he has a balding head and a moustache. His hat has been placed vertically against the box. His job is easy. He regulates the firmness with which the yarns are interwoven. Every time after the skein has been thoroughly beaten, he tightens it and the process starts again. In the background, a pretty young woman enters the house. Is she carrying finished yarn or did she do the washing by the pump outside? From one of the top windows, a pole is sticking out with some shabby washing and a few skeins of yarn. In the distance, we see a female form. Behind this is a house or warehouse with just some small windows at the top. Perhaps they are side windows, like the house further down. They all have unusual low roofs. Here, we are probably away from the city centre, with more space. It is interesting to see that in the drawing Luyken already sketched a very detailed cloudy sky, which he then as carefully engraved in the etching. Text and image are closely connected here.

The name refers to the attitude of the people living in The Hague: airy fairy. They seem very up-them-selves, but it is a lot of air. A new shopping centre in The Hague (with fake old facades) has been named after this dessert (photo below).

Delft: installatie

Delft kent sinds 5 juli een eigen afdeling van de Orde van den Prince. Daarmee kreeg de droom van Alwin Toppenberg gestalte. Als lid van de Orde van den Prince koesterde hij de wens om in de Nonnerie en Prinsenhof een eigen afdeling te stichten. Op zijn vraag om daaraan mee te doen antwoordde ik met een volmondig en spontaan ja.

de moed te vatten om nieuwe initiatieven te ontwikkelen, zoals nu het vestigen van de afdeling Delft van de Orde van den Prince. Dan stap ik naar voren in de Nonnerie. In 1581 vestigde Willem van Oranje zich hier in het toenmalige Agathaklooster. Nu leest mijn peter Alwin Toppenberg mijn levensloop voor. Om te worden toegelaten als Lid van de Orde geldt de zwaarte van je curriculum vitae.

“U bent gewichtiger dan u denkt” zegt Bas Verkerk, burgemeester van Delft tijdens zijn welkomstwoord in de Nonnerie. “De talloze problemen van het huidige Europa vragen om meer besef van de eigen taal en cultuur.’’ Ook wijst Verkerk op de dringende vraag: ‘’Wie neemt het leiderschap op zich? We zouden weer zo’n man als Churchill moeten hebben. Wie toont de moed om uit de comfortzone te stappen?” Vooral deze laatste woorden raken me. Waarom zouden we altijd volgens het ons vertrouwde stramien leven? We moeten ons niet laten verstarren door angst in een steeds meer onzekerder wordende wereld. Beter is het om

Zo schrijf ik als auteur over wat me raakt in mens en maatschappij. Vanuit een historisch cultureel besef schreef ik het boek ‘’het geloof van Oranje’’(U2pi, december 2015). Met lessen uit de geschiedenis hoop ik daarmee bij te dragen aan een wereld vol oorlog, terrorisme, en religieus fanatisme. Gezien mijn vroegere functie als economisch stafmedewerkster bij de NOS vertrouwt de Orde van den Prince afdeling mij het penningmeesterschap toe. 57


Na deze woorden dwalen mijn gedachten af naar Willem van Oranje (1533-1584). In de Prinsenhof beleefde hij zijn laatste dagen. Ondanks zijn vogelvrijverklaard zijn wandelde hij over de markt van Delft. Hij hield ervan om met de marktlui een praatje te maken. Zoals ook koning Willem Alexander zich een toonde met het volk van de Schilderswijk na de aanslagen in Brussel. Na de felicitaties volgt het diner in de Prinsenhof. In de muur bevindt zich sinds 10 juli 1584 het kogelgat van het fatale schot van Balthasar Gerards op Willem van Oranje. Tijdens het diner denk ik terug aan de woorden van Bas Verkerk, burgemeester van Delft. Besef van de eigen cultuur is volgens hem het noodzakelijke tegenwicht voor de problemen binnen Europa. “De op het gedachtegoed van Willem van Oranje gebaseerde Orde van den Prince is dan ook de hoedster voor onze taal en cultuur. Ze biedt hoop en troost, ‘’ aldus Bas Verkerk.

Modewereld tekent voor gezonde carrière modellen

Het is een discussie die regelmatig terugkeert; wat te doen aan misstanden in de modewereld en ongezond dunne modellen op de catwalk en in magazines. Een ongezonde leefstijl is niet alleen onwenselijk voor de modellen zelf, maar ook voor de vele jonge meisjes en jongens die graag model willen worden. Om het goede voorbeeld te geven hebben twintig partijen uit de Nederlandse modewereld de handen ineen geslagen. Zij willen de gezondheid van hun modellen beschermen en tekenen daarom voor goed opdrachtgeverschap, een goede begeleiding van hun modellen, het betrekken van de ouders bij de modellencarrière van hun kinderen en realistische beeldvorming in de media. Staatssecretaris Martin van Rijn (VWS) is blij met dit initiatief. “Het is sterk als de branche en betrokkenen uit de mode een stap zetten om voor een gezonde leef- en werkomgeving voor de vaak hele jonge mensen te zorgen. Ik hoop dat er veel partijen volgen en deze werkwijze omarmen.” Het ministerie van Volksgezondheid en het programma Alles is gezondheid zijn mede-initiatiefnemers van deze aanpak.

Elkaar aanspreken op goed opdrachtgeverschap Door de pledge bij het programma Alles is gezondheid‌ te ondertekenen, onderkennen de partijen dat ze een belangrijke verantwoordelijkheid hebben ten aanzien van modellen. Ze zorgen voor goed opdrachtgeverschap en goede begeleiding van modellen en gaan elkaar daarop aanspreken. Ook zijn ze transparant over wat beginnende modellen mogen verwachten en betrekken de ouders bij het werk van hun kind. Fashion Council NL zal als onafhankelijke instantie met expertise en autoriteit de uitvoering van deze pledge volgen, fungeren als meldpunt en verzoeken van nieuwe ondertekenaars beoordelen.

Onder de ondertekenaars zitten bekende modellenbureau’s, ontwerpers, de confectie-industrie, een casting director, een stylist, modemedia en diverse andere partijen.

Stress, depressies en onverantwoord afvallen De partijen onderschrijven het belang hiervan. Veel jonge meisjes van 12 tot 14 jaar voelen zich aangetrokken tot het modellenwerk. Het is hun droom een topmodel te worden. In veel gevallen worden ze goed en verantwoord

Van Gogh and the Seasons

The National Gallery of Victoria in partnership with Art Exhibitions Australia presents the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition for 2017, Van Gogh and the Seasons, in an Australian exclusive. Curated by Sjraar van Heugten, art historian and former Head of Collections at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, this extraordinary exhibition will explore one of the most expressive and original artists of the late nineteenth century through the prism of the circle of life – representing birth, bloom, maturity and death through depiction of nature. Van Gogh knew well the role the seasons played in his artistic vision and how the changing landscapes acted as a constant and deeply profound source of inspiration. He wrote to his brother, Theo: ‘Now those with an eye for it see something beautiful and good in all weathers, find snow beautiful and burning sun beautiful and storm beautiful and calm beautiful, cold good and heat, are fond of all seasons and don’t want to miss a single day of the year’.
